No need to feel bad about failing to change a Marathon tyre, there's many a strong lad been reduced to blubs by their battles with those things! Continentals seem to fair well against punctures and are a bit easier to change. I'm darned impressed by your audacious spirit - heading out for a 200km ride solo takes some guts!
Ah thank you so much!! Yes I’ve been practicing with continentals this afternoon actually and it’s much easier without the inner beading! Thanks for the support :D
Amy as a fellow female cyclists don't worry about not being able to change your tyre, beaded tyres are a nightmare. I don't use them, way too hard to get off. At least your out there doing a long solo ride. Also nice to see you in my home town Pwllheli. You also picked our favourite cafe stop in Porthmadog. Go girl ❤
Great video Amy,your genuine beautiful and kind nature always shines through!!I made the switch to tubeless couple of years ago and never looked back ,had 3 or 4 punctures always self sealed ,keep a couple of darts for when I get a bigger puncture and it doesn't seal , also carry a spare tube too, have a great weekend 😎
I live away from my dad and when I go to visit him we go road cycling every morning and it is amazing. I miss those adventures I have with him but these videos make me feel like I am riding my bike with my dad. So thank you and keep having fun!
@@amy.cycling.adventures Yeah we sometimes go out with his club in Yorkshire however I am only 15 so I can have a little trouble keeping up but it is still really fun.
If not already got one I would recommend the "Tyre Glider" removal/installation tool. Sorted out my tight Schwalbe tyres, small and light and won't break the bank.
Var lever. But those tyres are difficult. Tyre glider works with certain tyres. Tubeless come with their own issues. Certain tyres with certain wheels and sealant.
Never feel bad, I know that’s easy to say…deep breath and start again. Another challenge ticked off and experience in the bag. Keep peddling and stay safe. Love the videos 👍
Well done. Some great scenery you rode through. I guess as daylight hours increase you'll need lights less and less. However iF you are riding long Audaxes then you might consider a hub dynamo for night riding and not having to worry about charging lights. Just a thought.
Chin up, Amy. Experienced a flat when I started cycling and didn't know how to change my tube (p.s. I'm a guy.) Thank God an owner of a LBS happened to strolled down the trail that day and helped me out and away I went. After a few more flats and mishaps, I'm now an "expert" at tire repairs lol. Contis and Gatorskins are good tires and pretty easy to remove. Congrats on the Century ride. Those are fun but a bit mundane depending on the routes. Remember it's not about the destination, it's the journey. Have you thought about coming over to the States for RAGBRAI??? Us Iowans would love to have you as a rider. The ride is celebrating it's 50th anniversary this July.
Great ride!! All's well that ends well...even with a flat (puncture) along the way. It's only by sheer luck that I haven't experienced the same thing, because I never carry a spare tube...or tools. I know...the day will come.🙃
Might want a rethink on those tyres before PBP. Continental's are a little easier to mount, but tubeless might be a better option. Fantastic effort on the ride, amazing how we mature isn't it. 3 days riding in a day 👌
Amazing and inspiring video Amy. I've ridden a few of those beautiful roads across North Wales, Ive not rode them for a while, but Im determined to do it now Ive seen your video. Well done you for having the resilience to carry on after that damn puncture! Mega! 🙂
Schwalbe tyres are notorious for being hard to get off rims. Best method I learnt was to get 2 levers put one and halfway lift the tyre. Use the 2nd lever approx 6 inch half way off again. Then, use your weight to lever the tyres fully off. I find the extra long tyre levers are the best. There is a TH-cam video on getting awkward tyres of. You can also join the ETA that provides a breakdown cover for cyclists in the UK. Thank you for the great videos.
I've only changed Marathons twice, my thumbs were almost bleeding, didnt stop hurting for 4 or 5 days. As for cold toes try Hot Hands Toe Warmers or similar, If its below 4C I usually pop some in, works every time
Thanks for showing the beautiful Welsh countryside. I’ll be travelling back over to Europe & UK in June. Looking forward to it! Regarding tyres & punctures I absolutely suck at changing marathon plus tyres! I switched over to Gatorskins & it was so easy to change a inner tube. For the last year I’ve been running Pirelli Cinturato Celo TLR & they are better in the wet. I did give them a go tubeless but I went back to inner tube & a tuffys tyre liner. Just because I had a sidewall cut that wouldn’t seal. It was about 6mm so it was a nasty slash. I’m running 32c size tyres.
I was going to thumbs down until you shared what you learnt from the tyre change but then you mentioned the word nurse… I could never thumbs down now. But I still look forward to the reflection on how to DIY on a solo ride… thanks 👍
Take a look at the Tyre Glider, Amy. Once you master it, it's pretty amazing at re-rimming tyres, even the toughest. It's a British inventor, and they're not expensive. Tubeless is great but you may need to use a tube if it doesn't seal correctly so you'll be still there. Fortunately, you have support with Kyle.
Great videos! I did a similar ride earlier in the year (not quite as far tho!) - Weston to Pwllheli. Let me know the cafe in Porthmadog, will have to try it out some time ☕️🧁
I have Marathons on my bike as well and yes they can be a bit tight. Best thing is to centre the tyre beads to the centre of the wheel where it is at its deepest point. Keep going around the wheel feeding it to the centre and with any luck it should give you enough of a clearance to get the last little bit on to the rim. Just keep at it and with patience it should work. Having cold fingers will not help the situation. I always carry a spare innertube as well because it's bloody miserable trying to fix a patch to an innertube at the roadside!
Lovely roads.-- think I’ve driven that road from Bala that drops into Ffestiniog … stunning ! I went tubeless last year … best decision I’ve made in and age ( Pirelli Cinturato 28’s ) tried Goodyears first- 3 of us couldn’t get them on so stay clear of those 👍👍
Try Continental GP5000 ASTR tyres. These are new tyres from Conti and they have greater puncture protection and are good all year round. They are only a bit heavier than the STR and that is down to the increased puncture protection. Run these tubeless, 28mm and you will be good to go. They are easy to install so if you do have an issue, you can fit a tube without struggling to get the tyre off the rim.
Great ride and video Amy! Wonderful scenery and it was horrible seeing you upset over the puncture. Tubeless is great (for me) , but depends on wheel/tyre combo, but has saved me several times on a ride. I’m also a big fan of Kendal Mint. Well done and stay safe on the roads. 👏
Great ride, Amy! Don't be hard on yourself for the puncture. Marathons are great for winter riding but so so hard to get on and off. I'd fully recommend Panaracer TypeD Evo tyres for winter instead. I've used them for years now, and they're brilliant for grip rolling resistance and puncture protection. They feel like summer tyer!
You just get better & better at these videos, they are so entertaining. Thank you for sharing. Congrats on a terrific long ride, well done you. And..... please don't be so hard on yourself, a puncture & those damn tyres are not the easiest thing to grappel with at the best of times, you're not alone in finding them a challenge. Well done Amy. nice one 🙂
Had a front puncture last summer on the High Peak Trail. Hottest day 35°c in the middle of bloody nowhere! Sod all nothing anywhere. One tree ½ mile up the track to sit under. That feeling you get 😖 Aaaaarrrggghhhh. And I'd built the bike myself. A steely from 1980. You're not alone there, Amy. Your 140 miler is phenomenal. 👏🛐 Well done that man Kyle.
I have had similar problems over this winter getting tyres off. Like you, I got a new bike with tubeless compatible rims and tyres, but wanted to stay with inner tubes as that is what I am familiar with. This was a big mistake as I really struggled to get the tyre off, and then couldn't get it back on again. I reckon it took me an hour to change an inner tube instead of 5 minutes. I think tubeless compatible stuff is so tight fitting it's almost impossible to fix on the roadside. I have now set the wheels up tubeless, which is what I should have done from the off.
Great video Amy. It’s really frustrating when you struggle with a mechanical. The Schwalbe Marathons can be an absolute nightmare and I’ve had bruised hands many times whacking my knuckles on the spokes trying to get the tyre levels to glide round! I’ve found that if I get all of the beading into the central section of the wheel, (and make sure the tube is fully deflated), it does generally tend to come away a bit easier. Glad you got back on the road without it completely ruining your mood though. Views were stunning 😍
Sucks about the punctures may be worth getting something half way like a folding gatorskin marathons are real tight especially with tubeless rim's nice ride 👍
I bought Marathon Plus tyres years ago as they are supposed to be virtually puncture proof but realised if I ever did puncture they would be a real pain to get on and off the wheel whilst at the side of the road. Get folding tyres rather than wire bead.. much easier to fit.
Just watched this, and the first thing I thought of is don't compare yourself with other people, just look how much you have grown. You can't compare yourself to others, so don't try, you are who you are, the whoopee girl............and bloody quick up hill......
Hey Amy - did you ever get a set of good quality TIRE LEVERS? I hope so; they really do help immensely. No point whatsoever trying to do it "by hand." Wishing you well, as always.
I'm doing the C2C in a couple of weeks. Challenges ahead for myself, this is inspiring seeing you get that many miles done before sunrise! Good effort as always. I've got the same make tyres as you getting a puncture would absolutely end my trip 😂
Schwalbe Marathons are tough. You should carry several zip ties with you if you use those. Practice the zip tie method at home in front of a TH-cam video until it's second nature. It turns an hour job into 10 minutes. a bead seating tool is also helpful but weighs more and you need to store it somewhere.
It's been a few years since I rode to Barmouth from Walsall. Disaster! With loaded panniers, I needed a gear half the ratio of the lowest I had. I ended up sacrificing a pair of socks pushing the bike uphill (better than wrecking the cleats, I reckon) and getting the worst saddle sore I've ever suffered. Bike #16 is going to have a dinner plate for a gear at the back.
Marathons are known for being super tight, I believe. I guess the concept is that they don’t puncture very often, but when they do…. You have an enviable level of fitness, Amy. I was wondering how you manage to do so many long rides. Amazing endurance. Do you think it’s from commuting everyday? Or do you do structured training? I did the Soller Loop today from Port Pollensa and I’m in bits. But then, I’m 100kg and 40 years old, so….
Ah hope you enjoyed Soller!! Thanks haha, I’ve always been active, I used to jog & gym before cycling and I cycle 5-6 times a week so I guess it’s built up! I don’t follow a structured plan but I just ride a lot so I think that’s why I can do the endurance. I always say though never compare yourself to others all our abilities are different what matters is enjoying it and setting yourself challenges that are personal to you because everyone’s version of a challenge is different but they’re all just as valid :D Have a fab weekend!
Get a Wahoo 😂 great trip Amy all credit to you. Just practice puncture repair any honest person will admit they have had failures unless of course you are a Bertie Big Bollocks! Great effort you will smash the endurance because of this leaning curve. "Failure is success in progress." ― Albert Einstein Well done Kyle for the support.
I really like this video. I think it's because you spoke naturally and let your great personality come through without hamming it up like you often do. Keep up the great work and thanks for the content!
Don't be too hard on yourself Amy, those marathon tyres are notorious for getting off and on depending on your wheel rims. If your wheels are tubeless ready you'll always struggle with that tyre. Get advice from a cycle shop, change the tyre and go tubeless. Keep up the good work and good luck. 🚴🚴🚴
Tubeless! Our whole Wahoo Le Col Ladies team are now Schwalbe Pro One Tubeless and Disc only, PS Off to Porthmadog to walk the dog in 20 mins! Cadwaladers Dog Ice Cream, treat for the boy!
Marathons are bombproof as a rule but also come with a weight penalty and poorer rolling resistance. Look at Continental grand prix 4 seasons. They are the best trade off between speed, weight and punture resistance.
Thank you! Funnily enough they’re what I have on my summer bike which I’ve taken for it’s first spin this week & will be joining me on my next Audax, been practicing tyre changing and it’s so much easier! :D
Hey Amy another vote for the tyre glider, i have marathon 700x32c on for the spring , once you get the technique getting them off & on again is a doddle.... look for "ride with roy "channel he does some good reviews/instructional videos... great ride BTW !
You're so wise for someone so young.

I always say though never compare yourself to others all our abilities are different what matters is enjoying it and setting yourself challenges that are personal to you because everyone’s version of a challenge is different but they’re all just as valid :D
Have a fab weekend!
Bloomin' lovely. Take a ride to the west coast to Aberdovey along the Dovey Estuary. Bloomin' marvellous. Thank me later!
Thank you!!
I really like this video. I think it's because you spoke naturally and let your great personality come through without hamming it up like you often do. Keep up the great work and thanks for the content!
Ah thank you, thanks so much for watching!
Scwalbe marathon almost break your thumbs taking them off the wheel honest dread repairing puncture at work
Not your fault Amy, we all go through it!
Thank you! Yes the wheels are tubeless ready so think that made it a bit harder! Thanks for watching :D
Tubeless! Our whole Wahoo Le Col Ladies team are now Schwalbe Pro One Tubeless and Disc only, PS Off to Porthmadog to walk the dog in 20 mins! Cadwaladers Dog Ice Cream, treat for the boy!
I’m thinking I’m going to make the change to tubeless! Ohh I love it there enjoy!!
My hero 👍👍🚴🏽♀️
Amy: tip. 2 pairs of socks. Take 1 pair off and put on the outside if your shoes.
Great job on your long ride 👍 , wearing the right clothes is what matters for sure, I use grandprix5000 tires, less punctures and easier to change
Thank you!! Thanks for the recommendation :D
Why not take a spare innertube? They fold up quite small and don't weight a lot.
I had a spare inner tube but I couldn’t get the tyre to come off enough to get the punctured tube out haha!
great ride
SO HAPPY !
Thanks for the video. Get the 'buy me a coffee link' sorted so we can say thanks for the context 🎉
Didn’t know this was a thing until now! Should be buy me a chai latte for me 😂 thank you!!
Hey Amy another vote for the tyre glider, i have marathon 700x32c on for the spring , once you get the technique getting them off & on again is a doddle.... look for "ride with roy "channel he does some good reviews/instructional videos... great ride BTW !
Best video yet, absolutely beautiful scenery, think you should go tubeless 🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️
Ah thanks so much for watching Mark!
Which exposure front light do you use ?.. Ive searched a few. Ridiculously expensive 😮
I have the Strada Mk11 RS AKTiv - I know :( I’m so lucky that I’m gifted it!
Anyone recommend the Tyre Glider to you to get the marathons off 👍
Yes I do have one but still couldn’t do it 😂
