UK's Hardest 100km - Cycling Sensational & Steep Snowdonia National Park, Wales - 3000m Elevation!

  • In today’s video fellow Backpedal community member, Nick Brownbill and I undertake a recce of just half of Nick’s proposed 230km +6000m route for his proposed Backpedal event, the Giro de Wales. 115km and +3000m of climbing taking in 7 big climbs, including Stwlan Damn, Cwm Eigiau, The Colwyd and Penmashno, as described by Strava (incorrectly) as The Climb from Hell - it’s not even close to 2 of the others!
    In the Snowdonia, National Park, unrelenting steep is the order of the day….where I was taught a valuable lesson, there does exist in the UK tougher climbing than even the Lake District! Plus it's every bit as beautiful.

    I’ve loved all your content over the summer and autumn Phil, thanks for sharing these epic rides with us. The scenery looks utterly breathtaking in that part of the world, your elevation gained this year must be off the charts. Good luck with your Zwift season, in a medium that’s often full of big egos and despite your very clear ability your humility really stands out. Chapeau.

I feel like through cycling I rediscovered all that is beautiful on our doorsteps - and made some great friends along the way. So for sure I hope plenty more real world content to come - because to your point, there’s only so much getting dropped on Zwift I can manage over the winter 🤣 I just looked at Strava and it shows 145,500m of elevation - albeit a lot in the first half is on Zwift, which comes a bit easier in my experience 👍. Good grief that is some climbing in a stunning part of the country..... is that part of the route Nick is planning on Backpedal?

    • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy
      @BikeRacingWithoutMercy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was climbing like I’ve never known it, Stephen - relentless steep - but sublime 🤩 And yep….. it was merely the harder Northern half ….yep half of the route ….. I’m not sure I’ll be able to do the full 230km and +6000m - its the sheer intensity of the climbs that did for me !

    Apologies if this has been asked and answered many times, but is it possible to grab the gpx files for these rides ? They look amazing would love to ride them myself. Thank you

    I’ve not been to north Wales for 30 years, but remember a climb near swallow falls on the A5. You turn right as you go over the bridge, back then it was called the ugly house climb. I’m not sure if you did this one as your second climb on the video?

    • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy
      @BikeRacingWithoutMercy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Barry - good to hear from you 💯 - it could be the same climb - right off the bridge and then starts ok followed by 1.2km of hell 🥵. It was called Cwm Eigiau- and I didn’t see an ugly house - but sensational part of the world 🤩

      Barry I know the climb you mean well! Phill we didn't do it I'm afraid, it's not far from where we went but just the other side of Betws-y-coed to the direction we went. The Ugly House is a very... Distinctive landmark and its another great climb :)

      @@nickbrownbill3413 cheers for clearing that up Nick - I’m assuming it’s flavoured disgustingly steep 🤣

      Hi Jonathan - it’s the Cafe du Cycliste Albertine - absolutely love it. And it’s on sale now - 20% off this weekend - which is irritating for me 🤣

    that looks absolutely stunning, I'm gonna add it to my to do list,
    I've recently found you're channel and subbed, a little constructive criticism, I'm not a fan of the "i went up this climb in x time putting me x in the leaderboard" no one cares more than you about you're strava times

    • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy
      @BikeRacingWithoutMercy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Cumbrian Rider - and thanks ever so much for subscribing 🙏. This is an absolute must - so great to hear you’ve added it to your list Sir 💪💯.
      I agree that I’m never much interested in other people’s Strava times etc - but I find that there is a lot of interest in the data and the segments - and a lot of questions (even though I post the link to my Strava) - so I add all of the data. Also there’s an element of the content in that I started on Zwift and always was wandering how the indoors power and speed translated outside - so I’ve done a fair bit of content to compare and contrast - and the little times up the hills are also my own momento’s . Hope this explains why you are correct 💯 - but why I’ll continue to post them 👍
