      14.7 is the ideal stoichiometric ratio, but it isn’t the ratio that makes the most power. Depending on the engine that ratio is in the range of 12.5 to 13.5. This is because under load and at high rpm the molecules of air may not be close enough to a molecule of fuel to burn. The increase in fuel increases the probability of fuel being in the right place at the right time for the flame front to propagate.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andrewf8486 Yes, a bit on the rich side makes more power. By trying different main jets to find the fastest one, I probably end up somewhere around that ratio.

    Absolutely the best carb tuning tutorial ever. Well done, well explained and I can appreciate the effort you put into this tutorial and the work to ensure your scooter is running the best it can. From the graphics, animations , on board video, tripod shots sped up of removal/install clearly showing the parts etc. It’s super helpful and helps me better understand each function and how to troubleshoot carb issues and how they relate to specific engine running conditions. The only thumbs down I have is Pawshina looks to have outgrown her scooter...but yet still having a really good time!

    Started with main jet 92. Swapped like 100 times. Ended up with a 90 main jet but with a new air filter. Long story short - it's waaay easier to diagnose air intake problems than main jet problems.

      @@LabCoatPaul thing is those foam filters are too loud, which attracts unwanted attention. Though often a 50cc is also available as a 125cc, and those airboxes flow much better and they aren't too loud. Plus they've got the OEM branding and all of the E-numbers on them.

Idlespeed screw was cranked too much and it skipped whole idlesystem. Symptoms was that scooter did idle like 10sec and then shutted down. Used your basic setting which you told in this video; 2 full turns idlespeed screw when contacting throttle lever and mixture screw full closed and unscrew it full 1 turn. And boom; holy shit, idle was there

    Best presentation and explanation of the options and interactions I've seen! And I've been watching a lot of vids now as trying to get my scooter running again! And last few times I rode it--after a "professional" tune up--it ran shitty. Until seeing this video, I was just worried about cleaning the carb & making sure the jets weren't blocked! Checked my jet sizes (35/88), so all makes sense it was running too rich! (It had ran well for the first few years I got it from the dealer, so really suspect the intelligence of the guys who last worked on it) So glad I'm finally teaching myself how to take care of it and a video like yours satisfies my engineering background and the hands-on/work bench sides of me!

    This is well spent 15 minutes, very well explained. I have some problems with my scooter, working my way up in main jet right now. It runs decent but I dont think it gets enough fuel on full speed. It also stalls at idle if I do a quick twist and release on the throttle. Btw, I had the same ways with tha air filter box, removed and it wanted bigger jet. But I hate the noise from the open filter so I think I will modify a stock air box to work well. Maybe an open filter inside the box and more holes to get it flow enough. My scooter is 72cc and does about 70 kmh/44mph. I just want it strong, it does not need to go faster.

    I bought a new carburetor for my 1P39QMB scooter. It came with a 0.33 pilot jet & a 0.78 main jet. Obviously, I want to get more speed out of my scooter, so I'm trying to add more fuel because the new carburetor came with a high flow cone filter. So I tried changing the pilot jet to a 0.38 & the main jet to 0.85. I'm gonna try to do what you did & keep going up or down in jets to which ever gives me the best top speed.

      @@kevinstearns4198 Can you smell gas at all? Maybe you have a leak. Or you could try a smaller main jet. Smaller jet means it will use less gas. Take it on a long stretch of road where you can hit your top speed. If the smaller jet hits the same speed, you can probably use the smaller jet.

      @@LabCoatPaul no gas is leaking the plug is the right color i think its the carb. the top end is weak that could be a reason.

    You really have alot of effects from different jets, i ride with the same jet year round, now with a foam filter but its the same jet as when i had the stock filter, and it rides perfectly, also got a performance exhaust on it now, and thinking about increasing the jet size from 86 to 88 or 90, will see.

  • @tenders
    @tenders 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very well done. Once you throw the foam filter on though you are signing up to learn a whole repertoire of additional retuning whether you like it or not. Had the original air box filter been of higher quality you might have just cleaned it and saved several hours of trial and error. I know you like your SYM, and many like me enjoy messing with carbs too up to a point, but this is yet another argument that most people are better off starting with a higher quality product than a Chinese scooter in the first place.

    This video is quite old but one of the best explanations that i have seen on TH-cam that's actually in a language that i can understand... Btw i was wondering If a bigger carburetor = more power or higher RPM

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A bigger carburetor will allow more air to flow through it, and it can add more gas, which means you can have more power.... IF your engine is able to draw more air through that bigger carburetor. You might be able to get a little bit more performance on the stock engine with a slightly bigger carburetor, but going a couple sizes up is actually worse, unless you've installed a bigger cylinder.

    This is fine for people with some knowledge of carbs so that they can follow how fast you are going. I'm a retired Class A mechanic with experience teaching beginners. This adds too much complexity with needle and jet sizes etc. There is a British guy who is much better at explaining carb functions who makes this video look as clear as mud. Search him out.

    I bet my scooter need to be tuned. It doesn't like to idle when I first start it even after its warm and sometimes it dies at stops. Sometimes it runs with no issue. It accelerates fine but revs like crazy. My tach needle goes past the numbers and so does my speedo. This scooter goes way too fast 45-55 mph. I wonder if my mixture is too lean. THIS VIDEO BY FAR IS THE BEST GY6 CARB TUTORIAL. I think this is my new favorite video. Thank you sir.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I'm glad you liked the video. If you're getting 45 - 55mph out of your scooter, that's really good. Your main jet is probably the right one, or close. Try adjusting your idle mixture, and maybe try a smaller pilot jet.
      Also, it sounds like you have a 150cc GY6. This video is about the 50cc QMB139, but the procedure is the same. The jet size numbers will be a bit bigger on the 150cc than what I have in the video. A Chinese 150cc scooter can hit 60mph if it's tuned really well. The numbers may vary a bit because the speedometers are usually not accurate.

    • @thelagmeister
      @thelagmeister 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No its 50cc. It takes a LONG time to get to that speed. The previous owner didn't tell me he upgraded anything but promised I would be VERY happy with the scooter. I won't be surprised if this has the bore kit already. I believe Nickgy6 had his bored 150cc doing 88 mph on one of his videos. It's completely flat where I live. I'm sure that helps. I know the speedos aren't accurate but I've paced this scooter with other cars and take this thing on the highway almost every time I go out. Again thanks. I won't be having any gy6 carb problems thanks to you taking to time to make this great video.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thelagmeister Ok that makes sense. You probably do have a big bore kit. The most I can get out of my 50cc is 35mph. (actual speed)

    • @thelagmeister
      @thelagmeister 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LabCoatPaul So I have to come clean. I ended up putting in a bbk and the top speed didn't increase (maybe even decreased) and when I had it radar tested the highest I got it was 45mph and 43mph all day. I changed nothing else and dropped a valve after about 1500 kilometers. I did add some extra weight to it. It was fun while it lasted but the bbk was probably the worst thing I could have done to the scooter in retrospect.
