    This is one of the best "carb tuning for dummies" videos l've seen so far. I would assume this would also apply to 150cc engines as well (except the jet sizes will be larger).

    This has honestly been the best video I've ever seen on carburetor adjustment. all about the practical application, doesn't overload me with scientific mumbojumbo that I'll never use, and really makes understanding the concepts and applications of carburetor adjustment palatable for the common wrencher.

    Best presentation and explanation of the options and interactions I've seen! And I've been watching a lot of vids now as trying to get my scooter running again! And last few times I rode it--after a "professional" tune up--it ran shitty. Until seeing this video, I was just worried about cleaning the carb & making sure the jets weren't blocked! Checked my jet sizes (35/88), so all makes sense it was running too rich! (It had ran well for the first few years I got it from the dealer, so really suspect the intelligence of the guys who last worked on it) So glad I'm finally teaching myself how to take care of it and a video like yours satisfies my engineering background and the hands-on/work bench sides of me!

    I bought a new carburetor for my 1P39QMB scooter. It came with a 0.33 pilot jet & a 0.78 main jet. Obviously, I want to get more speed out of my scooter, so I'm trying to add more fuel because the new carburetor came with a high flow cone filter. So I tried changing the pilot jet to a 0.38 & the main jet to 0.85. I'm gonna try to do what you did & keep going up or down in jets to which ever gives me the best top speed.

    This is well spent 15 minutes, very well explained. I have some problems with my scooter, working my way up in main jet right now. It runs decent but I dont think it gets enough fuel on full speed. It also stalls at idle if I do a quick twist and release on the throttle. Btw, I had the same ways with tha air filter box, removed and it wanted bigger jet. But I hate the noise from the open filter so I think I will modify a stock air box to work well. Maybe an open filter inside the box and more holes to get it flow enough. My scooter is 72cc and does about 70 kmh/44mph. I just want it strong, it does not need to go faster.

    excellent video. i replaced air filter (upgrade) on a taotao GY6 49cc motor. totally changed performance. full throttle- engine boggs and almost dies. changed pilot to 33 (vs stock#30). adjusted main screw 1/4 to full turn, backseat. still has issue. maybe ill replace main jet???

  • @fishmonger1526
    @fishmonger1526 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Started with main jet 92. Swapped like 100 times. Ended up with a 90 main jet but with a new air filter. Long story short - it's waaay easier to diagnose air intake problems than main jet problems.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      True. I was surprised how much of a difference that air filter made.

    • @fermitupoupon1754

      @@LabCoatPaul thing is those foam filters are too loud, which attracts unwanted attention. Though often a 50cc is also available as a 125cc, and those airboxes flow much better and they aren't too loud. Plus they've got the OEM branding and all of the E-numbers on them.

    Riddle me this: Why is it that when I install an air filter directly to the carb, and my AFR gauge showed me that I was running extremely rich at all by the smallest jets I had. It could only hit like 28mph. I've got a 50mm bbk, ported big valve head, free exhaust, and 20mm stock carb. I get 42mph and am just a littlech when I run an 85 main jet with a modified stock intake.

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Is your AFR gauge wideband? If your ratio is out of range, it might not read correctly. Was your spark plug black? Try swapping main jets for highest top speed, then look at the AFR gauge. 49cc scoot knows way more about this stuff than I do: www.49ccscoot.com/faq/bbkneeds.html

    Thank you for your very clear and helpful video's!
    I have one issue/question I can't find an answer to:
    My scooter with QMB139 engine is running perfectly fine now after I took care of some issue's. That is with the mixture screw out 2-2,5 turns and a cleaned carburetor. At that setting my scooter reaches top speed +- 38 km/h (it's restricted with a vario ring so I don't need a helmet). I kept it at 2,5 turns now.
    But when I set the mixture screw at 1,5 turns my scooter still starts and runs ok, but it's max speed is only +-20 km/h.
    I really don't understand how that screw can have this affect on my top speed with gas handle fully open.
    As I understand from your video's the mixture screw only affects idle and not mid and high. How come it does affect it with my scooter? Could you enlighten me? Thanks in advance!

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      38 km/h is not full speed for these scooters. The restrictor prevents the scooter from going to full throttle. Also, the throttle slider is vacuum operated, so you're probably not going fast enough to get into only the main jet.

    • @freekheining
      @freekheining 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LabCoatPaul Thank you. I know it's not the max speed, but I ment max speed for how it's restricted in my country (NL). So what you're saying is, that with 1,5 turns my scooter won't make it to using the main jet, and with 2 or 2,5 turns it does?

  • @HobbyOrganist
    @HobbyOrganist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My issue is it takes off cold just great and runs fine, but after its warmed up and I start off at a stoplight, it's real slow until it hits about 12-15 and then bam- the power comes on.
    I have a 34 idle and 80 main, I dont remember why i had to go larger on the idle on the previous Taotao, but it worked great, now I have a newer TaoTao 50, and replaced the factory carb with an unsealed one and put in a 34 and 80 jets like before

      Adjust the float height so the fuel valve closes when the floats are level with the carburetor. Watch this video at 5:11 th-cam.com/video/NJ3eEBeMako/w-d-xo.html

    TY for your videos,,,,So tell me if this is correct when it comes to tuning a gy6 carb, turn the mixture screw until you are at highest idle, THEN adjust the throttle screw. When the mixture screw is turned in all the way in it should kill the engine, if it does not then you need a smaller pilot jet. Likewise, if you turn the mixture screw all the way out and you cant get highest idle the you need bigger pilot jet

      Yes, that is correct. Also just ride the scooter and test the overall drivability to determine the correct pilot jet. It will have a lot of trouble just above idle if the jet is wrong.

    I have a derbi senda 50cc, it starts at warm weather and runs, but at cold weather it starts but dies after 5-10 seconds if i dont give it gass - it also does like going at full throttle, it hesitates? But when i give it half throttle it goes like full throttle😅 i dont know if i should replace pilot or jet?

    13:52 "It just died; I couldn't ride home." I don't believe you. Jet sizes will affect the performance, but the engine won't die.

      Sure! what's going on with it?

      My scooter runs great when I get it started mainly have trouble getting it started but once it starts for a few seconds so can turn it off and start it right back up but then after I let it sit for a little while and cool down I have to crank it quiet a bit and feather the throttle for it to start but once again when it starts it will start right back up.

      Also I think it might be possibly the battery cause it's a gy6 swapped Honda ruckus and the battery has a top of 130 cranking amps I haven't tested it yet but I think it might seem to start better on a kick start which I believe will deliver more compression on start up

      @LabCoatPaul  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rosslamoreaux3787 Start by checking your idle mixture. Ride the scooter for 5 minutes, then follow the idle mixture adjustment in this video. Also check your idle enricher. That's the thing with 2 wires on the carburetor. It should have power when the engine is running (at least 10 volts)

      @@rosslamoreaux3787 Usually the electric starter turns the engine faster than the kick start. If you're starter is very slow, get a big battery, like the YTZ10S. Amazon is currently selling a cheap PowerStar AGM battery for $41.25. I have one. It's very good. It probably won't fit in the stock Ruckus battery mount.

    I know this video is old.. but just getting into the scooter scene here.. I found a free 50cc taotao 2018 pony from a local by my work. All the parts appear stock and match up to the parts online.. however per your video at 11:36.. I can't fit my seat bucket all the way down nor can I fit that cover over the carb whatsoever. The seat bucket mashes down onto the front valve cover on the engine, and pushes down on top of the carburetor near the rear of the seat bucket... I've tried to search why a million different ways but apparently I'm the only one with this issue 🤷‍♂️ do you have any ideas for me as to why my engine is so squished upwards into the frame area to contact this seat bucket?? (And yes it's def oem)

    Hi Paul - excellent video. I learnt a lot. One thing I didn't see was anything on checking & adjusting the float level. These carbs have a sloping body (gasket face)..... I'm confused; from where do you measure the float height please?
