I just wanted to help out for those who are hearing impaired
"Mom? Can i get $464?"
Edit: oh my god I had no idea this got so many likes! To anyone who misunderstood this I was trying to make a joke. I understand that doll customization costs a lot of money and I respect anyone who dedicates their time to it immensely. I just thought it was funny because my mom would be really confused lmaooo. Sorry for the misunderstanding :(((
It was a joke. And a relateable one. X3
@Norah Lee It was a joke. Jesus..People these days.
That’s what Christmas is for hehe you know their going to give you money if they bought you consoles I guess I’m doing a big demand from parents
@Norah Lee r/wooooooosh
It’s not a funny joke, she spends thousands of dollars to make you happy!🤫🤔
I’ve been wanting to start doll customizing since I was 12 because of your videos. I’m almost 18 now and now I want to customize more than ever! I’m really going to go through with it. I love the style of dolls you make, specifically the kawaii pinky ones and I’d love to make some! I’ve been doing art since I was little so I hope it turns out well! I know it will take some practice! You’ve really inspired me, Dollightful! 💗💗💗💗💗
Agggghhhh!!!!!! I REALLY want to do this, I love art, crafts, painting, drawing faces and more, and just EVERYTHING about this sounds amazing and super fun! However, age has got me. I'm 12, and obviously can't get a job yet, so I'm stuck on the tiny allowance I have. It makes me really frustrated! I will have to be happy with just watching your videos- which, I might add, are fantastic! I love your videos, they make me smile every time. You have amazing creativity, and have a beautiful personality. Keep on making videos!!
im 11 but im just forcing my mum to buy the stuff for me XD
MoonMonkey155 Sammmme xD
#soz 4 u! 😯😦😕😨😢 waaahhhhhhh!
hi! I realized I'm a year late, but I wanted to try and help :)I used to be frustrated like you :( but I've learned to stay on the positive side! when you are an adult who works a job, you need to spend money on necessities . However, as a kid, you don't! so you can save up any money you get towards your hobby! take the list from the desc and look around in cabinets for the more common stuff. look online for cheaper alternatives for things! for example, when your first starting, you can buy acrylic yarn instead of nylon/kanekalon/saran! there are many amazing tutorials on that! and once you get better/know that you're committed, you can save up for better products! have fun and hope you get to do it :)
You could always wish for stuff for your birthday and christmas 😄 And im shure that you could do small jobs for friends of the family for money, clipping the lawn, gardering work etc. And have a flea market and sell unwanted things, clothes and homemade food/ cakes :)
Dollightful you have created a monster! Over the course of the weekend, I have binge watched almost all of your videos and now have a hankering to create a custom doll of my own. (Which eventually brought me here) I'm not quite sure when I will start on this new project but thank you for inspiring me to try something new! 💝
Just wondering, did you make your first custom doll yet?
hey its been 6 years how are you going? i hope your doing well with the custom doll making xx
As an alternative to pure acetone (which does have toxic vapors) or nail polish remover I use Windsor and Newton brush cleaner and restorer for dried acrylic and oil colors. It's about $10 Canadian a bottle, totally safe to use and removes the faces awesome. I've been using the same bottle for a very long time. Though I don't have a lot of completed dolls I've erased (what feels like) a billion faces. And I like to change my M2M skateboarder's eyes every few days or so. Not sure why. I'm pretty new to this myself so tons of trial and error, mostly error. Plus it restores my brushes. Yay. I've never tried polish remover so don't know how this compares but I love it. Also for a couple extra bucks I use the cosmetic cotton swabs instead of qtips, one end is flat and great for scrubbing out large areas of paint and the other comes to a fairly fine point, great for lip creases and other tiny painted areas. Plus they're much firmer than regular swabs. I use Testors since MSC is too costly to ship to Canada. I only have my bedroom to work in so I try to spray out the window then put the doll next to my air purifier and put a fan behind it to blow the toxic directly into the purifier and aim the purifier fan out the window. Works pretty good, never any smell even with fresh spray paint. Had to think outside the box since they don't have respirators for cats. I also have had problems getting the pencil to stick so for those with this issue here is my solution - Warning: if saliva makes you squirm stop new - I lightly dab the tip of the pencil on my tongue and voila sharp lines, rich color. I found trying to use water made them too wet and brushing with water after drawing just smeared or washed it away. Be advised you must apply sealant after each coat, if you try to go over it again, wet or dry, it will just remove the strokes already done. I've also had a little success using air dry clay from the dollar store to mold branches, vines, a unicorn horn and blend where I've glued on other doll parts. If you're just starting and wanna practice I recommend. I'm on a fixed income so I cut as many corners as I can. So far I only work with pencils, I have pastels and paint but I splurged on Derwent pencils, a 24 asst, 10 fleshtone and 12 metallic and I'm having way too much fun with the metallic. Highly, highly recommend. And thanks Dollightful, so happy to have found your channel. Your repaints are gorgeous.
How do you talk so much 😅
Removes the face?
This is a cheaper but still toxic alternative to msc: OFF bug spray. My sister and I used it because it's what we had available, and it worked. Granted, at first all it wanted to do was swirl the factory paint around on the face, but with some elbow grease and determination, it will eventually come off. The largest downside is that the doll will be really sticky afterwards. Dish soap can help with that.
THAT IS THE LONGEST COMENT IVE EVER READ! XD
This was all really helpful to me, thank you! I know it's been 4 years since you posted this, so maybe you have some extra tips for a newbie? 😄
Gosh, I remember you being the person who got me into faceups and BJD in general. In 2017, I started doing monster high customs, and this year I'm going to buy my first real ball jointed doll. Thank you so much for introducing me to this community!!!
me: OMG FLUTTERSHYYYY!!!!
Dollightfull: * takes off doll wig *
Me: OMG BALD FLUTTERSHYYYY!!!!
XD LOL!
Just did my very first attempt at painting a doll yesterday, for those in the UK (and if available elsewhere) who don't like using paintbrushes but want to use acrylics, try Posca pens. They're acrylic paint pens available as fineliners or chunky markers and were recommended to me at an art shop. I used the white fine one for my doll's eye whites and teeth and it seems to have worked really well, especially when putting multiple layers on the eyes.
thanks for this recommendation!
N3RDYG0GGLES for people in the Netherlands this is a good alternative too I've seen em here too
Sounds like a great supply!
I hate paint brushes, thanks!
N3RDYG0GGLES personally id be careful with paint markers on a custom, if they're water based it should be fine, (hopefully) but paint markers aren't technically acrylic in a marker, (unless you know it requires fluid acrylic to be refilled) most of the time its just opaque pigment in a liquid binder, so stay safe and even do tests to be extra careful.
Lol this was so entertaining to watch for some reason! Thanks for the hair info, i needed it! Lmao
No problem! I bet you know more than I do about most of the stuff, though. Haha :P
I'm so sorry, but I honestly have no knowledge about Pullips! D:
I know search it up I'm sure there's some thing
omg ur videos are 😍😍😍
I came here from you video
Thank you, my 11 year old creative granddaughter shared your videos with me on her visit during Thanksgiving and was so excited about what you do and she wants to start.... so I have created her a tote of supplies for her Christmas gift this year. With so much garbage out there for her to watch and she loves yours... thank you for making it FUN. And for those concerned with the money... I am an avid estate sale shopper, I bought everything needed (except sealant) thru a handful of estate sales and for a starter kit spent only $88.
I've been interested in doll customising for a while now, you and a few other creators really inspire me! I've gained a bit of the supplies over the years, so I have some stuff. this helped a lot, so thanks :D
I just wanna say thank you for all these videos. I've always loved art but lost my passion for making it growing up, but I recently discovered your videos and have become so entranced with doll customizing! Thanks to your vids I've found my passion for art again.
Seal your doll in a cool dry place
But
Florida
Is only
Hot and humid lol
Also I love your videos, your so creative
Haha! You might have to go into uncharted territory and use the matte varnishes. Thank you!
mary Walter same here in Texas haha!
Dollightful
please do a tutorial on the reindeer girl 🙏🙏🙏
It's summer. In California. And I like to sleep in.
God help me.
Phantasma I know that feel.
Thanks for making this video... I've been wanting to try this for 3 years and never knew where to start. So I bought some things for a basic faceup. I decided to go with the cheap route, and instead of Mr Super Clear I went with Testors Dullcote.
Here's the thing about Testors. It doesn't go completely matte and after a few coats with have this glossy look on the vinyl head of the doll... but on the body it goes matte because it's plastic. It is also very hard to build the colored pencils on as well so it comes out looking patchy unless you wet the watercolor pencils a little. It's good if you want to practice before buying and investing the money in super expensive materials... but I don't think anything beats Mr Super Clear.
If you guys find something let me know.
Mugzie Chan Thanks for letting us know about your experience with Testors. The search for an MSC alternative continues~
Mugzie Chan I think there is a prismacolour matte sealent that I've seen hextian use it is a bit glossy but still works good if you want a nice sealant x
Mugzie Chan also another thing I have done face ups without sealant you just have to use the pencils wet so that they rub of the face but you have to use a top coat of some kid to seal everything in place I use glue but only apply it were I use the pencils and don't seal the pastels because mine are really pigmented x
Mugzie Chan hope my advice helped xx
YET AGAIN I had the same problem AND IT'S HORRIBLE!!! But I got a complaint for using MSC so I guess i'll have to use it when and if I move to a house House
What I got so far and prices, I am so close to having everything I need just waiting on MSC ;u;

Vapor mask: Dollar store $1(might replace with different one)
Toothpicks: Dollar store 1$

Elastibulb Way to go! You did a great job being thrifty. Lol practice doll of doom!
can u use glue to paint over the dolls face instead of msc cuz im a 11 year old kid and i want to try making my first custom
I've tried using matte Mod Podge as a base (kind of like glue, sold in all craft stores) watered down and sponged on carefully. It picked up the pastels, but not so much the watercolor pencils. It's not as subtle, but I'd suggest (given your age) to try acrylic paints.
mod podge works best with an airbrush but testors dullcote works really well!
Elastibulb Your profile picture is amazing.
I have no intention of doll customization art, but I love your voice. It's so uplifting to hear. It truly sounds like you're educating rather than showing off.
The good thing about being German and living in Germany is that you can buy Farber Castell pencils in almost every shop that sells school supplies XD (I have so many of them and now I know a good use for them XD)
I will definitly try to start doing custom dolls myself :D
Another good thing about having Cosplay as other hobby is that I have lots of wig hair from cut wigs I can re-use for the dolls ( I usually save anything I cut off of the wigs) :D aaaaand I have way to many scrap fabrics XD
My dad is getting me the things i need to customise dolls but didn't know what to get so this video really helped him!
Cass Walsh I asked my mom if I can do it, and she said, “You can’t do that! You don’t even know what to do.” I’ve watched a million of these videos lol
Are you guys little kids or something
My mom knows what I need but she only buying the hair.
KatieGG
obviously? why even ask that? of course these videos are going to draw in children. lmao
I'm broke so 😂😂
My life goal was inspired by you:
Giving Doll Customs,
blankets and hand made teddy bears
To children in hospital
OMG! Thats so nice of you! Great job!
Ok thats so cool
That's so cool and great! I hope this worked out, considering that this comment was made 5 years ago
Hey if your gonna see this, is it safe to give customized dolls to kids? Since like msc is so toxic that you need a mask, and kids like to lick stuff.
Just asking because if its safe i want to make some for my sisters
Thank you! This video was so helpful! I had watched other videos about materials and how to start, and none of them mentioned how to use the pastels. I didn't know if you wet them or just rubbed them, but now I do! Thanks again for the helpful information!
I'm so glad it was useful! :D Thanks for watching.
SQUEEEEE! My Mum is buying me some dolls to try out repaints! Thanks for inspiring me Dollightful! :D
Same gurllllll
@@dranimsay1963 omg i hope you have fun :)
Kudos to your mom for helping you. Have fun 😊!
oOf I am so broke, I am gonna have to skip a lot of these XD
Same.
Like how am I suppose to get enough money?
I'm only a teen that's just heading into highscool.
@@lunariiart1320 I have a bunch of nail polish
Lol wait until you see her video on budget doll remaking
Ikr
Me the person who is also broke and probably don’t even have half of these things
I've found all my supplies for only $53.49!!! I hope I can get them, I guess I'll have to work hard for some more money lol!!
Nice price! ❤
PLEASE tell me where you got your stuff! I am on a small budget and that sounds blissful.
I'm a year late, but that is absolutely amazing!
That would be 100 and something in Canada DARNIT
Where'd you get all those supplies from?
{Also I think ARMY's (including me) are now taking over the world of the comment section}
I used clear nail polish to shine the eyes and I used mod pudge to seal it all because I wasn't about to spend big on this stuff 😂😂😂😂 and it actually turned out really nice and I'm happy with it lol
Just for anyone thinking of doing this don't. Mod Pudge is only for paper crafts and nail polish isn't effective. The nail polish and Mod Pudge will get sticky and yellow with time.
MonakoSM well some of us want to custom without breaking the bank, or can’t handle the toxicity of MSC. I’m testing mod pudge and a spray sealant for paintings, both are good and dry matte. Sadly mod pudge lifts soft pastels and smudge, but I can still work with it. Besides there’s many ways to custom and no right or wrong way, just do you.
Um, in this case I disagree. I'd avoid Mod Pudge and Nail Polish entirely because it'll ruin your project and yellow over a long period of time. If you personally know this yourself and are okay with that it's fine but for any artist who works hard on a project the time they put into that project which can be hours and hours is worth more then trying to find a quick easy solution. That isn't to say that you can't find other options that are cheaper and easier but those two are just genuinely a bad idea.
MonakoSM that's your opinion.
This isn't just my opinion.. this is a fact. Modge Podge gets sticky with time on the dolls faces. I can even reference evidence to support this. You have the choice to use Modge Podge if you want to, I can't force you not to but you shouldn't. I wasn't saying this because I was trying to be rude, I was saying this because it'll ruin your projects with time. I'm not restricting your freedom to create so I don't understand what the issue is.
I've been doing customs for technically 3-4 years. (That is if you count when I first started just using nail polish as paint. NEVER do this, you will ruin your nose. I now typically have 5-6 nosebleeds per week because of this.)
Lately I've been working with Sculpey clay, putting it on dolls by burning the clay with a lighter (also bad to inhale. And don't get me started on the high that you can get with just acetone. Wear a mask when using acetone and super glue.) So when I saw your video with the stuff you use, I was so relieved to find a safer, and better alternative. So thank you for ultimately saving me from myself lol. :)
Mulders Smoulder I know this comment is old, but I really hope you've gotten better! It's sad to think one simple mistake can damage us! If you're not any better by now I hope you get healthier and thank you for the tips!
I finally got my doll today so I can make my own Seesaw Suga and I'm bingewatching all of your videos to maoe sure I've got everything I need. I'm so excited and can't wait to get going
woow that is a cool idea, what doll did you use?
Wow, atcually it's rly cool idea and his image from seesaw is like 😎😎😎 💜💙
Me and my friend used to play with our monster high dolls when we were little and made a WHOLE world with them, we are now in our freshman year of high school and found an old Google doc with all their names, we both cringed like hell but we also wanted to "remake" It as a fun little project to bring them and I closer, as our school district is very odd and placed us both in different schools despite living in the same area. We have decided we are also going to use the dolls we once used as these characters and make our own customised dolls. So thank you so much for this video!! It showed them and myself what we are gonna need for this MONSTER of a project 🤣
Just thought I'd let you know that that Alpaca and sheep wool will always have come from well looked after, kindly treated animals because the wool is terrible when the animal isn't cared for properly :) And they can't sell poor quality wool
Oh, that is very good no know! Nonetheless, I always want to be sure just in case.
Understandable.
I'm lucky enough to be friends with someone that owns 3 alpacas...and 2 cria
That is lucky! Very nice :D
Dollightful Very! I'll actually be finding out if I can get some poodle fur from her to use for wigs too
Dollightful what is the difference between regular and soft pastels?
altogether everything costs $401.
gloria vuk
I counted it as 464
You don't have to buy everything all at once, nor do you have to get the largest sets or the most expensive artist grade right away. I work in an art supply store, and people who are wanting to try a new medium always cringe at the artist grade supply costs BUT there's nothing wrong with getting small sets of student grade materials, and then replace/add to/upgrade to higher quality materials slowly over time.
gloria vuk rip
Not if you start off with stuff cheaper but are the same matierials she mentioned just not the same brand and start with some stuff that isn't all pro!
Not necessarily, I mean when I was first starting out i bought a 2 dollar pack of Crayola water color pencils and some cheap varnish and that's honestly all I needed
I love animals too and I usually get Alpaca fiber for my wigs and it is important if you care for how the seller gets the fiber and if any animals were harmed during the process so do your research! But don't immediately think it's bad to use animal furs because it isn't as long as you know who you are buying from and how the animal was treated! ❤
#lol!😊😂😂😂😂😂🐄🐓🐕🐱🐥🐖🐗🐴🐮🐘🐂🐰🐧🐼🐺🐢🐹🐐🐍🐸🐑🐭🐦👑!!hahahahahahaha!!
2 years ago, I was intrigued at the thought of repainting a doll but didn't have the time nor proper skill and understanding of the process. I always thought it was really complicated, with all the spraying and sealing on the face. Now I'm more than confident to start my first doll face-up some time soon in the summer!
People should know that most of the time, people don't just shove over a mountain of cash to start these types of hobbies. Gather all the supplies over time. Start with supplies that you can start using and practice with. That way when you have everything that you need, your hand is trained and muscle memory is created. It may be frustrating to wait so long, but nothing is worth going broke over. Gather slowly and choose things that will last over many projects.
I’m a cosplayer and looking into doing doll customs with my scrap fabric! Thanks for the tips on creating faces
I followed Dollightful for a bit of time and I just realised I have most of these things at home already (I craft A LOT and my dad is a bit of a hoarder... ) so... LOL but I still have to get the other half... I have a feeling I'm gonna have a to get a job... OH WELL!
"Mum? I need to go spend all my money on stuff to make a *doll* ."
Literally me
Im spending my life savings. To save my doll that i destroyed 3 years ago, big regret, but a nice practice
Thank you!!!! You're a lifesafer. I want to try doll customisation but I didn't knew what everything I would need and where to start.
I really appreciate your videos especially this one. So many artists do'nt want to share their tips and tricks and you have no issue with it!
IDK why but your intro "Annyeong" always make me smile like an idiot.
Aww I'm happy to hear that :D
what does it mean? i’m too lazy to look it up lmao
Alex I'm not sure but I think it means "Hi" in korean
Yep! I believe it liteally means "peace", but it is also how you say hello.
it means hello and goodbye like aloha
I have everything to customize a doll
Except a doll😂
I know right!!!! I have everything except a doll and the acetone to remove the face lol..
Gacha Nugget 10 same 😂
Gacha Nugget 10 buy one
Ouch..
I have the doll, acetone, tissues, and everything to remove the face. Then I have Doll hair but no reroot tool 😅😅...I have NO cotton gloves and NO Mr. Super Clear. I also don't have pastels so I'll have to buy them today after school. Most important thing missing: the water proof pens.
Actually Kanekalon comes in a variety of natural and unnatural colors as well as neon shades. I use to buy it often to make synthetic dreads. < also you can dread them by backcombing and with steam.
Anyway this video was very informative. I can't draw to save my life, but i sure do love to color. I own faber castell markers, I'm defiantly gonna try out their pencils.
Omg I'm so glad I've found this. I've never done this before and wanted to do a very simple look-alike doll for my younger cousin to play with, this is probably the best series I've ever found for it!! Thank you!
I need you to know how much I appreciate you. I've been watching your content for years, and I used to do faceups while I was younger and had more free time, but I never had the proper supplies. I finally have a chance to get the supplies I need and do my first "for real" face up. I came back to this video to make sure I get all the basics, and I just appreciate you so much. You're informative but also sweet and reassuring, and still funny and entertaining on top of that. You feel like a teacher who's really passionate about what their teaching, and helping their students learn. It just makes me happy. Thank you so much :)
I'm hoping to be trying customs soon, so this was very helpful! Thanks!
Thank you sooo much for making this video, ive been wanting to try re-customising a doll for ages but never new what to buy.
Im 100% Subscribing to you :) xx
I'm so glad to hear that! :D And thank you
Great video! I want to add that the official US Gunpla store carries MSC! And for far cheaper than amazon, around $11-15 depending which kind you get.
I have adhd and really needed a new hobby because my past ones already live in the ✨ Graveyard for old hobbies ✨ and I loved the idea of customizing dolls, since it kind of uses or adapts abilities I learned for something else, so thank you SO MUCH for these videos, it’s the perfect guide ❤❤❤
I'm unbelievably blessed when it comes to fabric and yarn, as Im 6th generation seamstress in our family and my grandmother has a house on her propperty for JUST fabric, yarn, lace, threads and sewing machines. 😳 Though I still try to buy my own yarn because the stuff she has is exspencive natural fiber based yarns an I can't bring my heart to tear up an 30$-80$ scane of yarn just for a doll. But I do say I'm happy to have stumbled across the doll customizeing hobby as it's brought great joy to my grandmother to see one of us interested in sewing and has brought us closer. All the stores an history has been amazing to exsperience.
Wait... your grandmother has a SECOND HOUSE full of sewing stuff?? :-o
For the rerooting tool, you can use a "pin vise" too! I found that a drill chuck was actually more expensive to buy than a "pin vise".
I loveeeeee art supplies!!!
Same!!!!!!😁😀😊☺😄😃😂😉.......😴
Hey in the list it says Varnish in the discription box. What is it, do you know?
Nevermind! Just realized what it is lol
Your Neo doll looks really cute with fake lashes on!!!
Thank you!! I was really pleased with them! It's the first time lashes have ever worked for me, haha.
+Dollightful CA you make a all of custom collection
I'm REALLY excited to customize my very first Doll!!! Gonna use your tutorials, so thank you so much for making them! WISH ME LUCK! 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you so much for this video! For the longest time I have always enjoyed watching doll repaint and customs videos, but I never tried it out for myself. I recently pulled all of my old childhood Barbie dolls, Bratz, and other dolls from storage. Since I no longer have a significant attachment to them, I am very interested in repainting and customising them! Your video here has helped me so much already! I was very lost on how to begin and what materials I need. (Now to spend the rest of my day watching more of your wonderful videos!)
For everyone in the UK, this tutorial would be harder to follow because we don't have the same shops. I live in England and here's how I've gotten my stuff:
Search ebay for "preloved" "used" or "secondhand" dolls to get them cheaper by bidding or just buying in bundles. You could also buy them in shops, but if you're on a budget I recommend the first way :) (I just realized that Dollightful says this in a your first custom video....Oh wellll I will remind you all again then lol)
I got Classics Pump It Up Nail Polish Remover from B&M, it wasnt expensive but I don't remember the price. Its only ingredients are acetone and water. You don't have to have that specific one, but that's the one I use :)
I got eyebrow tweezers to remove hair and glue from the dolls head in Wilkos (50p), cotton gloves are also sold there.
Clothes:
I get fabric by buying cheap clothes in charity shops! You can buy clothes for only £1 to cut up and use.
MSC:
I bought MSC from a website called modeldisplayproducts. It's a UK based site and delivery is very fast. It cost me about £17 for shipping + UV cut MSC. It has the flat version available too which is slightly cheaper, shipping is still £7, but thats because its a toxic aerosol so royal mail can't post it. This was the cheapest way I could get it.
Hair:
I buy hair on Etsy. There's two UK based shops, Retrodollsuk and LittleKatherineDolls. LittleKatherineDolls is cheaper and sells wefted hair. I don't know much about Retrodollsuk because I've never ordered from them but their hair is longer, I don't know if its wefted or for rerooting.
Sewing material: Any shop with a crafts part..
Acrylic paint is also sold almost anywhere, like cotton buds and cotton pads.
I was lucky enough to have a mother who loves arts and crafts, and she already had watercolour pencils, acrylics, a kneadable eraser and soft pastels. She let me have them so I was extremely lucky.
Sadly that means I can't tell you a good place to buy them :( But I recommend The Range, it has literally EVERYTHING craftslike! I am 100% sure they will all be sold there.
I hope this is helpful and I haven't forgotten anything!
rachel the sleepy person THE RANGE! Of course!!
"preloved" is such a wholesome term for used dolls 😭
2:12 that eraser looks like an elephant lmao
o hei it do
Horton hears a doll designer
In Texas, it's always 100+ degrees with very humid days. ): I don't think MSC would work...
Fandom Trash i live in west texas! I hear you and let me tell you, if you spray when the sun is going down and the air getts alittle more chill. You will have better luck. We get mostly dry nights where im at but if you have a patio or a room with a window/Windows screen. You should beable to properly seal your dolly
I think it is u that hot! so can have a bit of 👅👉👌
Oh yeah definitely I live in louisiana and visit Texas every know and then and the humidity and the heat doesn't allow it to sit right, I just use liquid varnish instead
Try spraying it on a spare room or garage that has air conditioning system
Lol I feel ya. Only time it’s not burning hot is in winter, and it’s in the 20s and raining every other day.
After all these years, I can finally start doll customizing
Thank you so much for posting this! I have always wondered how to doll artists do it and now I know. I didn't know this, but I can actually do this with my old barbies from when I was little and I have all the supplies in my sewing room! This is so cool!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS I am making a custom doll for my best friend and I wanted to do something special for her :3
can you show us how to make that raindeer character? love your work by the way. sarang he
Yeeeessssssssss! please I would love to learn how you used Apoxy sculpt to make changes to your doll customization. I'd like to repurpose some old bodies that I otherwise wouldn't need. I hate to trash something that could be useful at some point.
And I'd like apoxie tutorials in general. I want to make some small figurines out of cloth but most of them are going to have helmets and go-carts, which I can't exactly sew. But for using apoxie on a doll, check out the new-ish video on "Skelita Wendigo". It's basically a spooky version of the deer character.
+Rosie johnson yes! I did see it when it came out. She's to amazing to not follow her work and I'm glad I did. It was an awesome video. She did so much sculpting and modifying it was the like ultimate doll modification tutorial. lol now I just have to come up with an idea and sketch. Meanwhile it's nice having the resource :-D

im so freaking broke...i wish i had like $300 to spend but im hella broke xD
Valentina Lee same 😅
@@grummax6617 lol same
She made a video for doing this on a budget
The thing is you can look for less expensive supplies, and you don't need all the materials all at once
Same here
Thank you so much for inspiring me into customizing dolls. My mother even agreed to this, just because she was how cool the transformation of your demon cool was. Again tbanks SOOOO much!
Actually, although I think I have most things I am really pleased that you have made these so I can check that I do have everything while I am waiting for my dolls to arrive! I am going to watch you whole series tonight and if I need anything I've overlooked I can get it on Monday when I am in town. This is fantastic, you think of everything! Thanks xx

it will for a while, just wait until it gets all yellow and smudgy :D
@@Lillukkainen its been fine so far! its been about three months. hopefully this doesnt happen
Ahhhhh why is every thing so expensive 😫😫😫
@@emmaclouston2922 Curious on a 2 year year update tbh
@@the_bunrhi she’s still alive and well, I haven’t had her on display for about a year now, but she is not yellowed or smudged :)
Does sealing with mr super clear really make it easy to draw on the doll with colored pencils like you're drawing on a piece of paper? Some videos show it's hard to draw on rubber surface with pencils even if you seal them, but your tutorials seem like you can just draw on them just fine. Give me some tips!!^^
Yes! MSC gives the face "tooth" for materials to grab on to. I use one layer in preparation, but I've heard other artists use up to 6 before they begin.
Dollightful thank you!! I guess I will buy MSC too, then^^
I literally JUST discovered her channel, and I really want to try this for myself!! I'm just to scared to mess up any dolls, but I'll probably buy some doll off of Ebay or something!! I can't wait!!!
Thankyou, been buying over time, picked up my first set of Dolls today ...
just waiting on a few things from ebay and by next week I should be making dolls...
I am so excited. Thankyou x
The spray sealant I use is Tamiya TS-80 Flat Clear. It does the job, but it seems to come out a bit shiny/sticky on vinyl, and I don't have the patience to wait for it to not rain and to wait half an hour for it to dry, so I'm trying out alternatives.
Speaking of which, don't use Liquitex Matte Varnish, use Matte Medium. Matte Varnish has practically no tooth, so pencil won't stick to it properly.
Question: how old were you when you started customizing dolls?
I make doll wigs Instead of rerooting the whole thing, using acrylic yarn
Thank you for the huge breakdown!! My daughter who is one of your addicted 8yr old subscribers, always asks to do this, I am going to piece together a holiday gift.
I appreciate all the options you provided. I'll run ahead now to the stores to start my workshop materials. Thanks a lot 😘😘😘😘
hey I'm trying to find a matte finishing spray for my first faceup and I'm kinda on the broke side would Krylon matte finish be a good alternative to MSC???
How much protection do you wear.use while using MSC. I heard its highly toxic, I currently have it but not used it just out of uneasiness of the things it can cause and or do to your body and lungs, do you have any advice?
Chloe C if you get a gas mask, you should be safe, however those can be really expensive. I suggest looking up the side effects of breathing it in just to be safe
You need to get a mask that is rated to protect against Organic Vapors. These masks can be purchased for around $30-40, with replaceable filters costing $10-15. The filters need to be replaced when you can smell something through them. A great way to check is to put on the mask, make sure it's properly seated (when you breathe in the mask should pull a little), then spray a little perfume. You should not be able to smell it. PLEASE take these precautions. It's honestly not that expensive compared to the cost of customizing dolls, and especially less than medical bills down the line. We have had face-up artists in the BJD community develop COPD after not taking proper precautions with MSC and ZM spray. Even Andreja switched to Liquitex Matte Varnish because she was worried about her health.
@@vhdangel I seal everything with a quick dry glossy top coat
I want to do this but my mom would be like
“But you would just give up”
Which is true
Just in case future watchers share our sentiment: if you’re worry about that, start with something small, maybe a doll dress from your old uniforms. After a while, if you want to pursue it further, you can confidently invest in more supplies.
Thank you for all the hard work you put in this video, I have literally watched this video 100 times!
Thank you so much for this! Quite helpful and so informative! I'm a self-taught miniature artist and have just started repainting dolls. I've got a few from your recommended brands and materials!
*internal screaming*
im going to be new to this, though ive been watching your videos for about 6 months or a year now
but im only 14, im asking for everything i need for christmas
im so excited to try it though
idky im even typing this i mean im just so excited
it's 17 items and im scared they might not want to buy any of it at all, or that they might not buy something super important like msc or something
which will s u c k
but i mean im grateful that they even buy me anything, yknow?
im just so so so excited to be apart of the community soon
im looking to see if i could sell my customs, at some point
im a fairly good artist with paper and pencil, i dont have the means for digital, but i doubt ill suck at custom doll making bc of my already acquired skills with faces and using tiny brushes and things
it'll be so great to have a source of income bc i cant get a job, i dont get allowance, and the only money i ever get is from christmas or my birthday and my birthday passed this year and i didnt get anything anyways so it isnt reliable (apart from the fact its only once a year too!)
so oof yeah im excited tho ive been wanting to do this for a while
and itll be awesome
@DaitoArt aww thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to even write that tbh
I hope I get as good as her someday lol
Best of luck to you too ❤
I got stuff for this when I was 13, it sounded so fun! I tried it but my colored pencils weren't so good so I gave up. I decided to give it a shot again, I read about the supplies I have a turns out I just needed better water colored pencils! I'm starting my second face up and my 1st full custom today!
"I dont know why im even typing this" *types really long comment*
because of the new coronavirus and how we might go into a recession I can’t rly get any supplies LMAO
ratscentral you probably won't see this but I'm in the safe position as you. I'm 14 and I'm worried my parents won't buy everything and try to persuade me to use $1 art supplies.
Will there be a tutorial for how too make the clothing id love to learn
lenkiyoumi there is one. or wait... two I think. you should check them out. :)
i saw so great i love her videos

Dollightful Your comments crack me up too. Flee the scene!!! XD Smart too, that stuff can be toxic. Had the same thing with some primer I was using for a cosplay not too long ago. OMG that stuff was smelly.
+Dollightful can you make a
+Dollightful can you do a Melendez
I've noticed that a ton of thrift stores have acrylic yarn in tons of colors at cheap prices. Also, thrifted clothing can be an easy way to get plenty of interesting fabric for little money--and one piece of human clothing can make many doll-sized pieces!
0:14 i think thats my favorite doll repaint I've seen, its so pretty!
Would Derwent Inktense pencils work? They're not exactly watercolor, but they are water-soluble ink
I'm just asking because I want to try repainting my first doll and I don't want to invest in a new set of pencils unless I have to because watercolor isn't my favorite medium ^^;
Crystalline-Bismuth yes you can
I just replaced my Inktense with plain watercolour pencils, and the results are MUCH better.
I've got an issue.
okay, so i sprayed my doll with MSC, but the water color pencils barely make a mark. When I draw on her, only a few pencils are able to make very soft and transparent lines, but the others look like theyre scraping off a layer of msc? no matter how hard or gently i press im only able to get a small amount of pencil on and only in certain areas. her eyes are giving me the hardest time... the marks only go on very scribble like and i cant build on any color it seems. I know you have said to re-spray to be able to build up more color but in your videos it seems like i should be able to craw on more than a transparent, one layer of water color pencil, white eyebrow on my doll. Am i not spraying on enough layers initially? did i spray on too much? I just want to draw on my doll D:
Im having the same issue...did you maybe order the MSC Matt instead of flat ? I ordered the matt one thinking it would simply be the opposite of glossy but it isnt....only the FLAT type works
ArminMin okay so i found out i just had to spray more layers. im used to working with other sealants for my artwork working in one layer. msc takes a few. and remember to turn our doll and spray at different angles to cover the whole surface!
for just the base layer or all layers?
ArminMin the base. you need to build up a tooth
Savannah I think you should add quite a lot when spraying msc and make sure to wait 30 mins in between coats xx
I have a question: For how many dolls does a bottle of MSC usually lasts? Is it empty after 2 dolls or after 10? Just to get an idea of how pricy this is gonna get.
I wanna know too
Only commenting for answer
For me it lasted for about 8 dolls
I just want to thank you so much for posting this video and the others! Not many people share their tips, techniques and products used, so this is a life saver! I have three boxes of dolls I've been saving so this is going to be fun! - Bunny Voodoo (Austin, TX)
I've been saving scrap fabrics not only because of the environmental impact of making fabric, but because I know I want to at least try doll customizing at least once in the next few years and I want to try making some cool clothes. I'm at least lucky that I know someone who likes collecting Monster High dolls who is willing to share their dolls. They don't have a bunch of clothes for them for me to harvest patterns from, so I'm stoked for when you get your patterns scanned and uploaded :)
