On one hand, I think it’s really nice that she’s making sure “budget” is ACTUALLY bare minimum to make it as accessible as possible

The part where she literally MADE BRUSHES AND NEEDLES out of trash had me like: Dude, I know I'm poor, BUT NOT SO POOR DAMMIT
I think it makes sense because, you usually can't find brushes that tiny and when you do, they aren't great and usually still too big. Believe me, I've been looking around and I can't find proper tiny brushes anywhere.

If you can't find small brushes using a tooth pick or the tip of an inkless pen can make great small lines. You just have to be careful when putting paint on it that you don't put too much on.

Since you didn't show a reroot tool, i made mine out of a broken needle and a glue stick. Literally a hot glue stick, heat it up, stab a needle into it (pointy side in) and break the eye of the needle with pliers :)

I didn't have much glue so when it came time for me to gloss the eyes I used a glossy nail polish, it worked realy well.

Well, I love how budget-ey and SUPER accessible, but it sorta gives me the vibe that your in a cult that hates art but you like art so to do art you must secretly sit in your room and use your own hair for brushes and berry juice as paints.
She gives me the vibe that she would live in an orphanage for part-beast children or something and i love ittttt omg
also this made me a lot more confident that i can still customize dolls with limited materials, especially the lack of sealant, but i don't think i'll be needing to make voodoo brushes or homemade needles (lmao), although i respect the sentiment that almost anyone can make a doll like this with whatever they find around the house, as well as being more eco-friendly. i actually have a faceless doll that i want to decorate so i'll definitely be using your wonderful advice!

Ok, a couple of thing I gotta tell you. One: In the event of an apocalypse scenario, I know who to stick to. I thought I was thrifty but lady, you took frugal to a whole new level. Two: The dollar store is my best friend, and whoever goes around telling people they have to have high quality, professional grade stuff to be any kind of artist, needs to stop. Stop it. Thrifty art is the best art. But even better, is the art that makes you happy. How ever you manage it.

Thank you my dear. When I was a child this was how we did things, it was lovely to remember. Necessity may be the mother of invention, but it is that thirst and hunger for creative play that took us little poverty kids on quests for new doll and toy materials. I think this little girl captures that spirit.

Also, if you don't have the energy to make your own brushes and needles, dollar stores are usually treasure troves in that sense. They'll commonly have several cheap brushes in a pack, as well as plastic palette knives and travel sewing kits that come with several needles and different threads. Sometimes I think those packs even come with tiny scissors. My printmaking teacher made me gain a love for dollar stores. I learned that you can carve those pink rubber erasers and it's great to find art supplies that are so affordable, since it is sadly usually the opposite.
The kitchen section can also be a goldmine! They're likely to have those skewers that Dollightful used or something similar to them, as well as cheap dishes and cutting boards and other surfaces you can get specifically for crafting, if you want a dedicated space to make a mess and don't have one. (:
Thrift stores will sometimes have fabric too, or you can go to fabric stores and some of them will have scrap bags that you can get for a few bucks! These are great bc dolls aren't that large and so it's likely that the scraps will be a good size and will last you a long time^^
This is a fantastic idea, not only for being thrifty, but for always looking for ways to make horns and accessories without having to use epoxy putty or worbla! I adore the horns - they are so successful, says the Capricorn person who loves goat horns on dolls! You were my first customizer to follow two years ago and I still find your videos informative while you even show us when you fail at something and find a work-around to make it work. Truly, a master at figuring out both the structure and the details! Love you, @Dollightful!

Ok, I’m only 15 so I don’t usually have a lot of money, so here’s the supplies I use!
Needle felting wool: it’s cheap, and is like pre prepared wool! Also, you can get it from Daiso 😁
Dolls: I have a thrift store in my town with dolls for $5 a bag (two per bag). These are a selection of barbie, Bratz (which I use commonly because it’s similar enough to monster high) and of course monster high dolls.
Fabric: I get my fabric from old clothes I don’t need anymore, or from the thrift store, because where I live fabric is really expensive!
Face-up: I use super small brushes, and no pastels as they are really expensive! I just use whichever spare paints I can find, and from my experience white and black are the most important colours.
Sealant: I use top coat nail polish on just the painted parts to seal the face in, as I can’t find MSC anywhere.

colorbar.s fairly well! Although my dolls are display dolls that aren’t played with, so I’m not sure how well it would work with dolls that do get played with. For me though, it works and keeps the paint from scratching 😄
colorbar.s i actually dont reccomend clear nail polish try useing glossy modgepodge and matemodge podge for sealent and dilute the modegepodge with water and use a sponge to apply any type of nail polish will eat away at plastic of the dolls face overtime and become sticky also modgepodge can be found at your local dollar store so its still a budget item

Ok HEADCANON TIME! Because she is based off of a lot of found materials, I imagine Theia being Ty's best friend. They head out to scavenge for new material and to share what each other finds. I imagine her acting like a sister and teases him about when he acts like a goof in front of Ayako and cheers him tell Ayako how he feels.

agree that she puts a lot LOT of effort in to her videos and dolls. the first video i've seen of her, she made a beautiful doll and started over because it wasn't perfect and i was so impressed by that craftsmanship

hey!! i’m not sure you’re gonna see this comment, this video is like half a decade old but i just wanted to thank you so much for making this!! i saw this video when it released and it really changed the way i thought about doll customising as a hobby!! i thought it was something that only professionals with a lot of funds could have a go at but seeing how little money you actually needed to make a beautiful doll really encouraged me to give it a try!! i’m now 30 or so dolls in to my own ooak journey and your videos always get me super excited to work on my own projects. a lot of people like to joke about how you walk through some elements of the process step by step as if anyone was going to follow along, but i find those segments of the video to be completely invaluable to me learning how to level up my craft!! please never stop including them!!
