Back with Part 2 in the "Best Years in Film History Series" - next up -we take a look at 1985 and why it is in the running for the BEST year in movie history by ranking the top 25 movies from this great year!! Pop that tape in, I got you, let's go do this!
@@thebeatnumber lots of great movies in 1985, that one was just not on my personal top 25 for that year...but it adds to the depth that makes 85 a serious contender for the overall year winner in the final rankings video!
Well, I loved the summer of 1986...I saw some of my favorite movies that summer: BACK TO SCHOOL, FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, NOTHING IN COMMON. RUNNING SCARED, ABOUT LAST NIGHT....and that year had my favorite movie of all time--Jonathan Demme's SOMETHING WILD.
Also, also, "Cobra" with Sylvester Stallone, "Maximum Overdrive," "Big Trouble in Little China," "The Golden Child," "Critters," "Eye of the Tiger" with Gary Busey, "Iron Eagle," "Night of the Creeps," "Heartbreak Ridge," the original "The Hitcher," "Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives," "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2," "Chopping Mall," "The Karate Kid Part II," "Short Circuit," "From Beyond," "Demons II," and Michael Mann's "Manhunter." So many great films from '86!! 🎥
These are fun! I saw Silver Bullet in the theatre that year. NOTHING was going to stop me! 🤣. There were so many great ones that year . I’d add Out Of Africa , The Emerald Forest , and A View to a Kill
European Vacation doesn't get enough love. No apologies required. I have like 10 copies of Fright Night. I'll buy that every single release. I have a Fright Night 2. Barebones though. Teen Wolf owns. "Give me ... a keg ... of beer ... .... and these ..." ... Rocky IV is amazing. "They better have my comics here ..."
Never get less than 12hrs sleep, never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city and never sleep with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on their body...you stick to that, everything else is cream cheese! 🤣
I forgot to mention this in 84 the best movie I watch almost every day bachelor party. Still have the tape. Just watched again that’s when I seen the date
You mentioned doing a top 10 werewolf movie video. I think top 10s, or however many, about different genres of horror would be great. Sci-fi, comedies, war, prison, suspence, action, adventure top 10s of all time or particular decades. Any of it would make great content in my opinion.
hey, thank you so much my friend! I appreciate that- I am glad you enjoyed it and liked it enough to stick around! I am having so much fun getting to talk about something that means so much to me!
ironic that I found this video late and shortly after I watched The Goonies on Blue Ray, all those kids are like a year older than me, always had a thing for Martha Plimpton ..something you don't hear often. but awesome Video, this channel hits the spot for me, keep up the great work.
Great picks. "Explorers" has always been very resonant with me...when I saw it I was 15 and I was those kids...the nerdy outsider, the one who liked old sci fi and horror films and it just felt great to see. And it still does. And "Clue"! To this day we will randomly go into the Singing Telegram performance around here...one of the funniest things I've seen in a movie, ever. "Fright Night"...yes! "Peter Vincent, vampire killer! Her nasty face at the end scared the hell out of me, too...that open, gaping mouth full of needle teeth. "The Breakfast Club" didn't mean much to me when I saw it; now, after having been a high school teacher 27 years it does very much.
her face in Fright Night used to scare the crap out of me lol! Having taught high school myself, I fully understand that new respect that can be gained for The Breakfast Club!
New subscirber, loving your videos...1985 is definitely iconic year and one of my favorites...Cant go wrong with your list, definitely my taste...Some other great ones from 1985 not mentioned are Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, Code Of Silence, Gotcha, Real Genius, Tuff Turf, Secret Admirer, Just One Of The Guys, Better Off Dead, The Sure Thing, My Science Project, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Stick, Head Office
hey thank you so much!!! I love my science project! you'll see it pop up on another couple of my earlier videos! I had I think, 62 total films I loved from 1985 written down and it was so hard to leave any off and get it to 25! I had My Science Project, Just One of the Guys, and Code of Silence in the ones I wrote down! Just shows you how deep 1985 was!
85 was a great year for films. I saw back to the future 10 times in the theater. Maybe one of the only better years for movies would be 1994. Reality Bites, Natural Born Killers, Dumb & Dumber, The Mask, Pulp Fiction, Interview with a Vampire, ... etc.
One note I'd add about The Goonies would be its contribution to the 80s pop culture as a part of the Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection with Cyndi Lauper's music video featuring several WWF icons. A lot of young wrestling fans today credit the Attitude Era of the 90s as the reason for wrestling becoming mainstream, but it was the Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection that launched the WWF into mainstream entertainment in the 80s. Cyndi Lauper and Captain Lou Albano were the main figures in starting that. That music video is included in every release of The Goonies that I've seen.
for sure! I mentioned that I think in one of my videos - the Goonies are good enough video with the wrestlers in it and Lauper was at WrestleMania- such an awesome time!
@AVAPopCulture I'm sure I'll get to that video. I'm still working my way through your old videos. I turned 10 years old in '84, so that's all quite vivid in my memory. Plus, I grew up watching wrestling with my dad and great-grandfather in the 70s and 80s. That was a big part of my childhood.
@@JerryRoark777 sam here man... Wrestling was such a huge part of my childhood - myself and my brother who is 4yrs older than me and my dad, we watched it together all the time...
@AVAPopCulture I still enjoy watching old episodes and events from back then. I even managed to get Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n' Wrestling on Blu-ray to be part of my Saturday Morning Cartoons nostalgia.
FLETCH is one of my faves, THE BREAKFAST CLUB too....also THE GOONIES, FRIGHT NIGHT, WEIRD SCIENCE, REAL GENIUS and of course, BACK TO THE FUTURE. MISCHIEF is a great movie just for Kelly Preston.
Cameron wrote Rambo 2 and Aliens in the same year. Stallone did a rewrite of the Rambo script to trim down the POW content - they played a bigger role, like the marines in Aliens... but it was still awesome. It's the only movie to ever blow up a waterfall! I remember Rambo was the #1 movie for the first half of the summer, then BTTF came out, and it was #1 for pretty much the rest of the year (with Teen Wolf #2).
I would not go that far lol....I have just been so excited to see it in such quality and great packaging because I feel like it gets so overlooked by other Hughes films like Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles etc etc...much more "cult love"....you'd probably never see Criterion put it out for instance but they'll put out his other films...I think weird Science has more cult love
My top 10 1. The Breakfast Club is in my top 5 favorite movies in general. 2. Back to the Future would also be in my top 5 favorite movies. 3. Just One of the Guys is the most underrated teen comedy of all time. 4. Cocoon is a great mix of different genres with a lot of heart and it's cool to see these older iconic actors. 5. The Purple Rose of Cairo, Woody Allen at his best and this movie should've gotten more Oscar love. 6. The Heavenly Kid is really fun teen movie that gets overlooked and I will never understand why Jason Gedrick never became a bigger star. 7. Goonies is still fun even as an adult. 8. Fright Night nails the balance of comedy and horror. 9. To Live and Die in L.A., not Friedkin's most iconic movie but it's still awesome and young Dafoe as the villain steals every scene. 10. The Sure Thing is a fun teen comedy and a road trip movie.
great picks! This year is absolutely LOADED! I had a list of 53 that I took to 25, then remembered I had written about 9 more on the other side of my paper during research for the video!!
Observations going later into your video: - “Out On the Edge” from ‘The Heavenly Kid’ is a great 1980’s track. I think it’s on iTunes. Check It out. It’s listed as “The Heavenly Kid (Out On the Edge)” - Linnea Quigley is the sexiest zombie ever - ‘European Vacation’ is worth it for Clark dancing in Germany at the Oktoberfest - In 1985, I never laughed harder than I did in t he theater watching ‘Summer Rental’ - read Tarantino’s book and what he says about ‘Rocky III’ and ‘Rocky IV’; I love both, but I kind of agree with QT - Given my sense of your taste in film, I am not sure how ‘Real Science’ didn’t make this list.
I will have to find that Heavenly kid soundtrack!!! And do you mean "Real Genius"? Cause if so, it was on my list of around 63 films that I narrowed down to 25 LOL
@@AVAPopCulture LOL! I meant 'Real Genius,' yes. I was tying these notes while you were talking about 'Weird Science' and I got confused. 'Real Genius' came out around the same time as 'My Science Project', and man, how weirdly similar were those two films marketed.
@@AVAPopCulture the box set is pretty awesome and definitely the better collectible. Just confirmed that it’s August for the synapse release….I had preordered from Diabolik for 29.99 each. Decisions Decisions 😭🤣
24:46 I remember watching a couple of middle-aged horror youtubers when Shout put the blu out a few years back, and one of them having just watched it for the first time said that he didn't care for it because he felt like it's more of a kids horror flick!! So apparently some people mistake Silver Bullet's abundance of heart with being not for grown ups; something I couldn't disagree with more.
Well...maybe I'm just a big kid at 44 but I love the film now just as much as I did as a kid....it is pretty intense and heavy on creepy atmosphere that King is great at creating...if someone misses those elements, I'd kinda question how deeply they process what they are viewing lol
'85 is probably going to be really tough to beat. I don't usually rank stuff because I find it's really difficult to say what is better than another and my mind can change at any time but if I ever think about it, Breakfast Club is easily top ten of all time and probably top five, for sure.
Before I watch your top 25, i'll give my top ten: 10 Witness 9 Friday The 13th Part 5: A New Beginning 8 Howling 2: My Sister Is A Werewolf 7 Into The Night 6 Return Of The Living Dead 5 Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment 4 A View To A Kill 3 Re-Animator 2 Clue 1 Death Wish 3
I did 1984 right out of the gate with the first video in this series! It will be a serious contender for the overall crown at the end in the final rankings video!
I am curious how old you are. Not being critical of your choices, but I turned 22 in 1985. While I agree it was one of the great years for movies, our tastes in films are very different. And I think that is result of how old we were when we experienced these films. I like seeing Sho Kosugi on the list. I think 'Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome' was the worst film of the year. Anyway, I am early in the list. I am interested to see where it goes.
First, thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Well, I am mid 40s but I am not just going by my own tastes with the years I select for this series...I am going by film popularity, iconic status of films, staying power and how memorable the films of a year are for the masses, the pop culture impactand relevance etc.... How old we are certainly has an effect BUT walk up to the average person if they remember or have heard of the top 5 films of 1970 - which were Beneath the planet of the apes, Love Story, The Aristocrats, Soldier Blue, and Kelly's Heroes and compare that to 1984 where you have Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, The Terminator, Sixteen Candles, The Karate Kid and Nightmare on Elm Street as your top 5 or 6...or in 1985 where you have Back to the Future, Goonies, Breakfast Club, Weird Science, and Mad Max in there and people are going to remember 84 and 85 much much more because those films are much more ingrained in the collective pop culture, been more culturally relevant, and have had more staying power... that's kinda how I am judging the years as a whole. The individual rankings of the top 25 films within the year are my own subjective selections!
My local art house cinema has been doing a retrospective of 1999 since it’s been 25 years. All except for American Beauty has been shown. I just watched The Insider for the first time and that film is probably the best of 1999 that I’ve seen. But yeah Eyes Wide Shut, Being John Malkovich, Election, Office Space, Rushmore… the list goes on and on
There is no better film in 85’ that beats BTTF. Nothing. That’s a fact. It really is a battle for second place. Rocky 4 , Cocoon, Commando, Clue, Come and See, Runaway Train and Legend
there are still about a 8 or so years left in this video series where I break down the best years before the final overall yearly rankings and 1939 may be one of those years BUT I will say, I think some years have 2-3 legendary movies may skew some people's opinions of a year and make it seem better than it was but there is a huge fall off after those big 2 or 3 and they lack depth of other years...after Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and a couple others, the drop off in 1939 is steep...it will be interesting
@AVAPopCulture I get that this year was stacked. But leaving out "Police Story" as an MA fan is like leaving out "Day of the Dead" as a Zombie fan. I'm just ranting in hopes of spreading awareness so that we might get Police Story in 4k here in the USA.
1985 is an extremely important year to me. That’s the year I graduated from high school and yes, I agree there are some excellent films from that year. However, 1985 isn’t even the best year from the 80s. That would go to either 1982, 1984, or 1987
I covered 1984 in the first video in this series and it is an absolutely amazing movie year! Launched a lot of legendary franchises that year.... 1982 and 1987 will be featured in this series of videos as well! They'll be competing for the #1 spot in my final overall yearly rankings....the 80s as a decade is legendary
@@AVAPopCulture I totally agree about the 80s films being legendary. I was lucky enough to get my first job at 16 in 1983 in a theater as a usher/projectionist. I continue to work on and off in the theater or video store through the next 10 years and literally saw everything for free.
More years are coming to be reviewed to be in the running for the overall #1 spot in the final yearly rankings! I will say, while 1939 has a couple of legendary films, it falls off pretty fast in terms of depth when compared to other years... but stay tuned!
I would say that's very subjective which is why I am doing this where we can see how truly deep and iconic each year really has turned out to be... Sometimes perception and popular opinion do not turn out to be reality! A lot of people point 2 19 39, but the truth is, after gone with the win wizard of oz and Mr. Smith goes to Washington. There is a massive fall off and the average person who you speak to would not know almost any of the other movies from that year....so the staying power, continuous pop culture staying power, etc etc all play a part!
@@sophiafakevirus-ro8cc That I agree with, but the so-called movie critics who are supposed to be so smart on the subject of films are just as bad but for different reasons. 🤣
Back To The Future is a really fun movie,. overrated? yes but worth watching. House is a wild movie Legend is a pretty strange IMHO. Tim Curry is fantastic as the devil and holy crap. it must have been hell (no pun intended) for him to get in make up and costume. those giant ass horns look massive. I mean they made him look huge like. man, you don't want to ever piss off or screw with this bastard. seeing tom cruise in a fantasy movie is quite weird. explorer is a fun movie. I heard that it kind of rushed but it was a good movie. sadly, you don't seem movie them anymore. Pray for Death is a badass movie. the ending was brutal. I mean, horror movie brutal. Bruster's millions is a decent movie but interesting fact. the movie is a remake of a 1945 film. so yeah, a remake 40 years after the original. Clue is nuts heavenly kid I have on blu ray. it a fun movie. you can find it on blu ray that came out last year. return of the living dead is insane. BRAAAAINS!! Summer Rental was a cute movie Silver bullets at 79? that's bs. that movie is a underrated classic. you can't go wrong with crazy Gary Busy in a movie. Breakfast Club is a classic Teen Wolf is a good film. Commando is a treat to watch. total Arnold. like it better then Rambo Better Off Dead is a great movie. No Retreat No Surrender you may not heard of but it a fun martial art movie. it a bit of a karate kid clone. it a small appearance by JCVD. Real Genuis is a must have. weird science is a fun romp. 1985 was a massive year for movies.

Yeah I'm trying to decide if I should wait on that or get the arrow(I think it is arrow) set
85 is super loaded with tons of depth!
Before I watch your top 25, i'll give my top ten:
10 Witness
9 Friday The 13th Part 5: A New Beginning
8 Howling 2: My Sister Is A Werewolf
7 Into The Night
6 Return Of The Living Dead
5 Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment
4 A View To A Kill
3 Re-Animator
2 Clue
1 Death Wish 3
good movies, but ours will be different lol!! 85 is a deep year!
It would be boring if we all liked the same things.
@@jonbolton3376 absolutely!! though, I do love most of those movies you listed! just narrowing it down to 25 was super hard
1987 was impressive as hell too.
Oh stay tuned...1987 is coming in this video series because yea, it was a very impressive year!
For me, it's Godzilla 1985.
1984 my Man-1984! 🎥
I did 1984 right out of the gate with the first video in this series! It will be a serious contender for the overall crown at the end in the final rankings video!
Let's do it!
Today: “we still make classic movies, we had that one two years ago”
Us: oh come on, 80’s and 90’s we had a dozen timeless classics, a month.
Lol yep
How old we are certainly has an effect BUT walk up to the average person if they remember or have heard of the
top 5 films of 1970 - which were Beneath the planet of the apes, Love Story, The Aristocrats, Soldier Blue, and Kelly's Heroes and compare that to 1984 where you have Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, The Terminator, Sixteen Candles, The Karate Kid and Nightmare on Elm Street as your top 5 or 6...or in 1985 where you have Back to the Future, Goonies, Breakfast Club, Weird Science, and Mad Max in there and people are going to remember 84 and 85 much much more because those films are much more ingrained in the collective pop culture, been more culturally relevant, and have had more staying power... that's kinda how I am judging the years as a whole. The individual rankings of the top 25 films within the year are my own subjective selections!
1999 - Talented Mr Ripley, American Beauty, Fight Club, Virgin Suicides, Magnolia, The Matrix
1999 is one of the years that is coming in this series! Stay tuned lol
My local art house cinema has been doing a retrospective of 1999 since it’s been 25 years. All except for American Beauty has been shown. I just watched The Insider for the first time and that film is probably the best of 1999 that I’ve seen. But yeah Eyes Wide Shut, Being John Malkovich, Election, Office Space, Rushmore… the list goes on and on
Don't forget The Phantom Menace!
There is no better film in 85’ that beats BTTF. Nothing. That’s a fact. It really is a battle for second place. Rocky 4 , Cocoon, Commando, Clue, Come and See, Runaway Train and Legend
Summer rental goonies peewee. Writing before finishing video
Wow you snubbed Reanimator, my list would definitely include Day of the dead, possibly my favorite Romero zombie film.
@@MoviePalaceOfBlood I love Re-Animator...Barbara crampton 🔥🔥🔥🤣
Brigade Of Death is the best movie of that year.
(1939) was no slouch!
I agree that 1985 is great. I lived during this time but you can’t rule out 1939…
there are still about a 8 or so years left in this video series where I break down the best years before the final overall yearly rankings and 1939 may be one of those years BUT I will say, I think some years have 2-3 legendary movies may skew some people's opinions of a year and make it seem better than it was but there is a huge fall off after those big 2 or 3 and they lack depth of other years...after Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, and a couple others, the drop off in 1939 is steep...it will be interesting
Wow, a martial arts fan that doesn't even have Police Story as an honorable mention? 😢
LOL I mentioned like 50 films - impossible to cover them all from that year man...that's why I stressed how deep this year was!!!
So 40 years from now do you think anyone is going to be talking about the movies of 2024?
@@dennishuffstutler9820 almost zero chance lol
Oh, you made a typo; I think you meant to say the 1984 is the best year in movie history. Easy mistake to make
Lo I started this video series with 1984!! It is a great one and one that will challenge for the overall year winner
@@AVAPopCulture Sorry, I have a jerking sense of humor. I appreciate your video and commentary! 85 was pretty rad
1994 1982 and 1939
More years are coming to be reviewed to be in the running for the overall #1 spot in the final yearly rankings! I will say, while 1939 has a couple of legendary films, it falls off pretty fast in terms of depth when compared to other years... but stay tuned!
Totally off era, but you need to watch Assassins with Stallone and Banderas.
Oh I have that! Good movie!
The 1930s is the acknowledged best decade for films
I would say that's very subjective which is why I am doing this where we can see how truly deep and iconic each year really has turned out to be... Sometimes perception and popular opinion do not turn out to be reality! A lot of people point 2 19 39, but the truth is, after gone with the win wizard of oz and Mr. Smith goes to Washington. There is a massive fall off and the average person who you speak to would not know almost any of the other movies from that year....so the staying power, continuous pop culture staying power, etc etc all play a part!
@@AVAPopCulture The average person is the masses, and they wouldn't know quality if it passed them in the street.
@@sophiafakevirus-ro8cc That I agree with, but the so-called movie critics who are supposed to be so smart on the subject of films are just as bad but for different reasons. 🤣
@@AVAPopCulture One doesn't have to be a film critic, one simply needs taste and discernment.
Back To The Future is a really fun movie,. overrated? yes but worth watching.
House is a wild movie
Legend is a pretty strange IMHO.
Clue is nuts
heavenly kid I have on blu ray. it a fun movie. you can find it on blu ray that came out last year.
return of the living dead is insane. BRAAAAINS!!
Summer Rental was a cute movie
Silver bullets at 79? that's bs. that movie is a underrated classic. you can't go wrong with crazy Gary Busy in a movie.
Breakfast Club is a classic
Teen Wolf is a good film.
Commando is a treat to watch. total Arnold. like it better then Rambo
Better Off Dead is a great movie.
No Retreat No Surrender you may not heard of but it a fun martial art movie. it a bit of a karate kid clone. it a small appearance by JCVD.
Real Genuis is a must have.
weird science is a fun romp.
1985 was a massive year for movies.
you're right, it was a massive year! I had a list of 53 and then realized I written like 9 more on the other side of my notes where i was doing research for the video!!! such a deep year!
Uh...have you taken a look at 1987??
Yes! I tried to stress that after tons of research on movie years, I am taking what are considered to be the best years in movie history (probably the top 15), and reviewing my top 25 movies from each of those years in separate videos in this series, and then I will do an overall yearly rankings! - 1987 is amazing! And that video is coming soon!!!
Absolutely 100% 1985. No comparison in my opinion.
It is a loaded year for sure!
Nope. 1939 is by far numero uno.
1939 might be one of the years I cover in this series but it is top heavy and doesn't carry the same depth
1987 was better
Possibly! I'll be covering 1987 I'm am upcoming video in this series!
