Good post but these type of lists sometimes seems a bit myopic. Stagecoach, Gone with the Wind, the wizard of oz, and several others were all released in 1939. Its why 1939 is considered one of the best years in movies. The eighties were overall great for movies. But how many broke ground? Were significant? Only time will tell.
The Terminator, Gremlins, Dune, The Search For Spock, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Top Secret, Beverly Hills Cop, The Last Starfighter, The Karate Kid, Missing in Action, Red Dawn, Romancing the Stone. Damn fine movies in 1984.....
1985 - Back to the Future, The Re-animator, Day of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead, Police Story, Rocky 4, Silverado, Rambo First Blood Part 2, The Goonies, The Breakfast Club
1985: Brazil, Witness, Mad Max: Thunderdome, Cocoon, The Color Purple, Blood Simple, Into The Night, Vision Quest (introducing a lot of people to Madonna), Ladyhawke, Fletch, St. Elmo's Fire, Explorers, European Vacation, Fright Night, Weird Science, Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Commando, Silver Bullet, To Live And Die In L.A., White Nights, Young Sherlock Holmes, Spies Like Us, Runaway Train, Clue, Legend, Enemy Mine. And it was considered a down year for revenue.
Ahhh! Good years but shhhh, some of those just might be part of this overall series of videos that I am going to go through on our way to the overall year rankings! Stay tuned 😁

Films I saw at the theater in 1984: Amadeus, The Natural, Indy, Gremlins, Friday 13th: Final Chapter, Terminator, Ghostbusters. I am surprised Amadeus did not make your list. Amadeus is #2 on my all time favorite list. Friday 13th: Final Chapter IMO is the 2nd best of the franchise after the first film. The heroine was excellent. Final chapter also had a great promo. The film was released on Friday the 13th, the tagline in the promo was "Friday April 13th will be Jason's unlucky day". I think "Final Chapter" was supposed to be the last film but it was successful so the franchise continued. As for years I enjoy. The 90s is my favorite decade for film. I like the look of the films in the 90s, I have read a different film stock was used in the 90s. I would like to see best lists for 1995, 1997, 1999.
There are some 90s years thar are going to be a part of this top 10 years series that I go through before doing a final whole year ranking... Amadeus was a heavy award darling film but just not the type I was into then - BUT it certainly adds to the crazy depth and quality of 1984!!

1984 was a great year for movies. I submit 89 as even better. As someone who was 13 in 1984, I must admit many of these films feel like nostalgia picks more than "great", but I get it. However, Brian De Palma's BODY DOUBLE is a film that was highly controversial and received mixed reviews at the time, but has appreciated over the years and is one of my favorite films of all time.

For sure the best year was 1976- Rocky, Network, All the Presidents Men, Taxi Driver, The Outlaw Josey Wales, Marathon Man Logans Run, The Eagle Has Landed, The Enforcer for example.
OK let me stop you right there. 😄 I JUST bought Firestarter on Blu-ray like two weeks ago after many years of being occasionally curious about it. (It was buy one, get one free, so Crazy Stupid Love came home too.) I still haven’t seen it, so I’m gonna come back to this video after watching it. Don’t want to hear any opinions yet. Don’t have high expectations, but it really seems like it might be a fun, if slightly dark little flick. And if this is at 25, yeah… 1984 might take it. Though ‘85 might be close… or maybe I’m thinking music releases, heh.

Tons of great films that year...I don't know if I'd say 1984 is way better than the films on this list lol but that is what makes lists fun and shows how deep this year was for cinema! What other films do you think should have been on the list?
It is all subjective but the greatest year of all time in movies is 1939. Way better script writers, directors and actors. Not even close. Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, Stagecoach, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Gunga Din, Wuthering Heights, The Hounds of the Baskervilles, Goodbye Mr Chips, They made me a criminal, The Three Musketeers, Little Princess, Dodge City, Love Affair, Buck Rodgers, Dark Victory, Confession of a Nazi Spy, It's a Wonderful Life,Only Angels have Wings, Young Mr Lincoln, Five came back, Beau Geste, On Borrowed Time, The Man in the Iron Mask, Andy Hardy gets Spring Fever, Each Day I Die, The Women, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan at Treasure Island, Jamaica Inn, Mr. Smith goes to Washington, At the Circus, The Roaring Twenties, Drums along the Mohawk, The Flying Deuces, Allegheny Uprising, Another Thin Man, Ninotchika, Gulliver's Travel, Destry Rides Again, The Hunchback of Notre Dame They are awesome movies that need no sound tracks, special effects, just great actors and actresses. Directors that put on film what the screen writers wrote and no woke garbage, just great entertainment. These are the movies that got me interested in movies.
It is all subjective for sure but I just don't see 1939 with the same depth... outside of Gone With The Wind, Wizard of Oz, and Mr Smith Goes To Washington, maybe Wuthering Heights, and a couple of others, there are not a lot of films that have had the same kind of staying power in the popular culture conciousness...It's a Wonderful Life is 1946 I beleive, not 1939 and it obviously has staying power...Laurel and Hardy aret remebered from their movies as much as just their sort of "act" and appearence...and things like Buck Rodgers are probably remembered more for the TV show than the original movie(s) ....stuff from the 70s, 80s, and 90s just seems to have had way more staying power and impact as a whole - but 1939 may be on this series of films and yes, everything is sbjective for sure!!!
@@AVAPopCulture I've watched over half of them and they have great story lines and action that keep you in the movie. Most times they use special effects, explosions, language and nudity to keep you in some of the movies today. The ones I mentioned, I can watch over and over again.
@@timbrady3090 Yeah, it's all a taste thing! But I can also counter with sure, they use action and they use nudity or sex or stuff like that to help tell the story but those things exist in real life and they were very much artificially cut out of older stories too.... But I'm the guy who will watch. It's a wonderful life and thoroughly.Enjoy it and then follow it right up with Rambo and enjoy it too lol
Ghoulies-I wasn't a big fan of. maybe the satanic crap that just turn me off a bit. Dune is movie that is not for every. the last starfighter is a wonderful movie and was the last movie Robert Preston appeared in. Gremlins is a wild ride horror and choas. The Natural is a fine movie. Conan the destroyer. ok movie but man, that deal you got for both conan movies is a freaking steal man. Police Academy is by far the best of the whole series. ST: III search for Spock is a good trek film. Temple Of Doom and boy that movie really gave some people serious concern about pushing PG ratings limits. it also spark a change in the rating system that year with Red Dawn being the first movie to be PG-13 Dreamscape is wickedly wild. Karate Kid is a fantastic film. This Is Spinal Tap. this one goes to 11 Starman is slow but a good movie. Cannonball Run II is a fun sequel but the original is better. Runaway. what not to like about Geme Simmons from Kiss giving Tom Sellick a bad day. The Philadelphia Experiment sadly underrated Johnny Dangerously is fun and goofy. Greystoke is an interesting take on Tarzan. what not to like when you have the actor who later played an immortal as Tarzan? Teachers is a very underrated movie Ice Pirates, Cloak and Dagger, Trancers, Missing In Action, Ninja III, Tank, The Wild Life, and so on. 1984 was a crazy year for movies.

IN ONE YEAR! Seriously, Hollywood has no fucking ideas anymore.
I watch Gremlins and Beverly Hills Cop once a year. Beverly Hills Cop 1 and 2 during the summer and Gremlins for Christmas. Immortal classics 😊
Romancing the Stone, Blame It on Rio, This Is Spinal Tap, The Bounty, The Natural, Purple Rain, The Philadelphia Experiment, Amadeus, and more . . .
The Natural made my list but all of the other films you mentioned help show the depth and strength of 1984 as a legendary year for movies!
Amadeus and The Bounty are two of my faves. Endlessly rewatchable.
1985 - Back to the Future, The Re-animator, Day of the Dead, Return of the Living Dead, Police Story, Rocky 4, Silverado, Rambo First Blood Part 2, The Goonies, The Breakfast Club

Smith goes to Washington, At the Circus, The Roaring Twenties, Drums along the Mohawk, The Flying Deuces, Allegheny Uprising, Another Thin Man, Ninotchika, Gulliver's Travel, Destry Rides Again, The Hunchback of Notre Dame
They are awesome movies that need no sound tracks, special effects, just great actors and actresses.
