My Scottish mother used to make these dumplings, I haven’t had them for over 50 years, I am looking forward to making some now! Thank you for this video. 😋 It’s also here birthday today Halloween, so this was a good memory for me today.
Hi Cheryl My Scottish husband said 3 words to me make it now He will get it tonight for tea Have a wonderful weekend Kindest regards for all your wonderful recipes from Australia Di
One of my favorite winter dishes. My dear old dad used to call dumplings "dough boys" always had to be nice and crispy on top from being finished off in the oven. Following you from Cumbria keep the fantastic recipes coming
My Scottish Mum used to make mince and doughballs so the mince went further! The mince was seasoned with gravy salt which left the liquid thin. For a real treat she would add in some sage and onion stuffing mix to the doughballs, delicious! By the time the doughballs were cooked the gravy had thickened as well. Those were the days, miss you Mum ❤
I made this last week: Oh. My. Goodness. It was absolutely delicious. I'm no cook, in my 60 years I've only attempted dumplings twice and I ruined them 😢 these ones of yours in this recipe were perfect. Enough for 3-4 people 😊 it was sooo nice I went back for seconds and ate half. I froze the rest but took it back out the next morning to defrost and ate it for tea the next day. I've already got all the ingredients in to make it again this week. Absolutely top recipe, thank you
This looks exactly like a dish my Scottish grandma made back in the 1960s when she used to cook for our large family. Delish...thank you so much for sharing this simple delight.
Love this recipe. I use Macdougall thickening granules in stew cos they do loads of stuff and BTW I'm not sponsored to say that 😂. This is making me hungry. X
Cheryl! Looks delicious! Just my tip, use the same ratio of 1 part suet to 2 parts self raising flour, to make the best suet pastry to cover savoury pies. For whatever reason (I have no clue) you need to use it straight away, or freeze is straightaway or else it goes icky. Never used additional baking powder, but that's on my to-do list. 🙂😋❤
Looks lovely, I always prefer my dumplings full on crispy topped so instead of simmering on hob for 15 minutes I put in oven proof dish put the dumplings on top then cover with lid in oven for 15 then remove lid and cook for twenty five minutes - very crispy top while still having a doughy underneath. Love me some mince and dumplings with a creamy mash
WOW, this looks so tasty Cheryl. I hadn't ever thought to finish this sort of thing off in the oven but after seeing this, I'm inspired to give it a go. Thanks so much for sharing. Best wishes x
My maw, sadly gone over 40 years now, used to make this, without that wee extra step of oven cooking and I always wondered how she did it. I saw the suet pack and remembered that there was always some of that in the "pantry" - I never knew why. It all adds up now and I will be making this tonight!
Baked dumplings when were kids to make it last my mam would put stewing steak with mincemeat bake in oven fluffy dumplings inside crispy on top my mouths watering just thinking about it( I wish I had a time machine )
Hi Cheryl , thats incredible , was looking through your content yesterday looking for this exact recipy .....amazing timing , having it for dinner tonight .
I add creamed horseradish to my dumplings mix ! Super.. good adds a kick to the heat...😊 way better than mash any day ! I do all this in my slow cooker it works really well and it costs less to do it that way...
You have totally got to bake dumplings in the oven. I’ve seen folk cooking them in the pan that’s been used to cook the main but you cannot have soggy dumplings, they need a lovely crust in order to even be edible.
It was just a week ago when I made mince and my husband bought the ingredients for dumplings but I didn't know how to incorporate them. So glad I've already subscribed and have seen this. Will make mince in a few weeks and will be able to surprise him with the dumplings this time!! Thank you for sharing!! (Question: are there any herbs you prefer to go in the dumplings, or is the best way to go just to buy 'mixed herbs' and use that, like you did?) 😊
Oh, this looks lovely. I'm in the US and think of dumplings as something you'd have with chicken. Yum! We'd never have the dumplings crisped up but I think that sounds lovely and will give that a try next time.
Never heard that expression mince and dough balls always been dumplings to me but looks fantastilicious set me a plate haha I'm the same too with gravy granules mmmmmmmm
I made this for the lady I cook for (Edna) and she says to tell you thank you and well done! She loves your recipes 💖
Thank you Cheryl for nudging this recipe for me. It was a childhood memory that I'm putting back on the menu.

I was just aboot to say the same thing about not having dough balls in sooooo long.
Absolutely love that!
Please post back and let us know how you got on with this recipe and if it was as good as you remember!
My grandmother , who was a pro cook , made these dumplings . It’s true you don’t miss these treats until they’re gone.
Hi Cheryl

I really rate that she always says get the best “that you can afford”. Rather than just saying “get the best meat there is”.
Ohhhh. This is soooo lovely. Gonna make it today for a warm meal out here on a cold evening on the Colorado prairie.
Your channel is like a visit to grandma's house. Thanks for the memories, Cheryl.
Aw thank you!! 🥰

Haven't had these for 40 years, I want them now.
Wow, my mother used to make this when I was a kid. She was part Scottish and she was a fabulous cook. ❤
My son’s favourite dinner. He called them Dough Boys🤣 Lovely to see. Another great recipe. Thanks x
My Mum always called them ‘Dough Boys’ too ~ delicious!
My husband keeps asking for dumplings. I've never had them or made them 😂
Thank you for showing this recipe.
My goodness, not had "doughballs" since I lost my Mum. Was 15 years ago. Thanks for rekindling special memories 😊
When I was growing up in Swansea they were known as dough boys. They are still a family favourite 60 years later.❤
Whoa! Talk about comfort food.
Top tip folks, stew some sausages in with the mince (peel the skin of the sausages halfway through cooking) you won't regret it.

This makes me homesick big time .
Looks YUMMY Cheryl!! Thank you for the recipe tutorial. 💝

A perfect mid week meal for a cool and rainy evening. Thank you so very much for sharing this recipe.
I used to put Cheddar biscuits on top of stew and/or chili and bake it till it was all bubbly and crispy on top. Really filled my boys up nicely.
LOVE this meal. Reminds me of my childhood. Thanks Cheryl
Thank you for sharing. This recipe takes me back to my childhood.
This is on the stove now :) my family has loved every recipe of yours I have made. Many thanks & much love to you & yours.

This is a massive favorite in my house! I make mince with sourdough dumplings. It’s so easy and comforting and moreish!
We called the mince and doughboys… From Dundee but in Los Angeles 60 years ago
Love this recipe.
I use Macdougall thickening granules in stew cos they do loads of stuff and BTW I'm not sponsored to say that 😂. This is making me hungry. X
Thanks for this one Cheryl.
We had your slow cooked ham/lentil soup last Sunday. The leftovers kept us on the go for 3 days.
LOVE a nice lentil soup...perfect weather for it too! 🙂

I will give these a go! I’ve not ever had dumplings with beef, usually just with chicken. Looks so good!!
Oh, dumplings with beef mince is AMAZING!!! Going to make this in a couple of weeks!!! (Didn't know the exact recipe for dumplings until now!)
Great with chicken too Jean 😀
I love a good beef stew and dumplings especially when you crisp the top of the dumpling.

Still love doughballs with mince or stew. Mam used to make them to go along with stewed beef. Love them!
I do it a wee bit different with the doughballs..not in the oven but I leave them in the pot to soak up even more gravy....MMmmmm
