2 years ago I felt defeated in life. I have a lung and heart condition that left me with a Vo2 max of 23 and lung function of 53%. I was on the back end of 2 major surgeries and lived on pain pills not being able to do anything but sit on a couch all day. In 2019 I had a final surgery to relieve pressure from the right side of my heart and decided at that point I would literally die before I stayed inside my house in my comfort zone another day. I found Lionel while looking for some motivation in the midst of withdrawing cold turkey from 2 years of opioids ever day and felt some connection to his story and would watch any content I could find. I now train tri even though I haven't raced. I went from not running .1 of mile to running 6 miles at a 9:30/mile pace from barely pushing 150 watts to a threshold of 265 watts and from feeling like I couldn't breathe in the lap pool to swimming 500 meters all on 50% lung function and a stressed out heart. I know it sucks to not win I'm also a highly competitive person and my own worst critique. But thanks for sharing this with us. The imprint you make on peoples life is huge - at least the imprint you made on mine. Stay relentless brother it will all be worth it
Keep on keeping on brother
There’s no growth in the comfort zone and no comfort in the growth zone. David Goggins. #CantHurtMe.
👊
Jesus, keep hammering man!
Wonderful. 🙏
I don't understand how anyone could not root for this man.
besides, he is so kind to the fans!!!!
People hate on others that are successful/popular. It’s like that with many athletes
Only arrogant elitists with tall poppy syndrome could hate on the guy
Lionel, you are awesome and so inspiring. Skip the ironman with Jan, focus on 70.3 worlds and the PTO championship. It is possible your physiology makes it hard for you to take in water/calories for such a long day. Figure out 140.6 in a few years.
I think part of it is he has shown he has so much talent yet time and again he keeps making the same mistakes, one of which is overtraining. And I think people / fans get tired of it. He is so talented but I also think very stubborn and set in his ways. He is making mistakes he should not be making at this point in his career. But I may be wrong.
LATE NOTE . . . Just remembered his opening words . . . ."I don't want to do this anymore"
he . . .is . . . done!
burnout catches us all in due time. Time for a new chapter Lionel
Absolutely insane conditions on course this weekend. I offered as many words of encouragement I could muster when I passed Lionel (on his last lap, on my first) but seeing him suffer made me want to push on even more. Finishing and surviving were the ultimate goals. Not my best second half on the bike and the run was abysmal but I'm still proud of my 11:31 for my first ever Ironman.
Congrats man.
Congratulations 🎉🎊🍾❗❗
Huge congratulations to you, an epic day, huge dnf rate, well done
Huge thumbs up!
You are an Ironman !!!
Dude is an absolute legend.
He finished on his feet, still inspiring.
no doubt!
As long as your aren't risking injury it's OK, but sometimes the best decision for professionals is to DNF so they can recover faster.
“I don’t know if it’s realistic, but that’s what I damn well intend to do.” His tenacity and perseverance inspires me.
You gotta love the stick-to-it-iveness of this guy!
@@jeffdesanty7928 Oh yesssss. And boy, wouldn't a like to have such a ttl time in full distance triathlon having walked from mile 10 of the marathon:)
‘Talbot think about that for a second’ 😂😂😂.
exactly
Classic reply, and give Talbot credit for asking questions that he knows will elicit a classic answer
If he is able to figure out is Nutrition/Hydration on the Ironman distance he will be unstoppable. He has the drive and the heart hopefully in the near future we will see him on the podium.
Mad respect. “Talbot just think about that for a second” - one of the greatest lines.
New series coming up… “ stop sucking at nutrition “
That’s a good one 😂
I bet he would love this!
Love it!!
Come to Germany. Race Jan and have fun. Germans will come watch, not because they care who win, but because they want to celebrate the sport with you and have a nice day. Jan might have some pointers for you.
Agreed. I'll be there.
@frits germs because it will be the Total destroying of Sanders and Jan just Nerd a victim. Frodo will celebrate that race with a nee best time and Sanders is just there to push him
Do not go to that race...re-focus, re-group and meet Jan in Kona...no distractions...the money is not worth it in the end.
@@DublinDapper do you think the race is about money? From where? There are no entry fees, there is no mainstream media, so where will the money come from? This race has never been about who is the best, that is Kona. You think Lionel, Jan or the other pros don’t know that? This is an exhibition for people who love the sport, between two guys that actually like each other. There are no PTO points, no money and no real bragging rights because none of the other pros are there. German club triathlon is huge, and if the clubs make an effort to participate as spectators, it has the potential to be a huge party. of which all the athletes and their families are a little part of. If you ask me, that is a much better option than sitting at home to re-group (whatever that means).
I agree with your statement word by word. Grüß aus Unterfranken
"Talbot think about it for a second" lol love it.
love following you Lionel!
No limits! Keep going until you loose consciousness ;)
Lionel your a bad ass man. I was standing at the finish as you made your way through shouting for you. Don't listen to any of these knucklehead haters who have no respect. Your a hero dude keep kicking ass and posting videos! GO LS!!
I love this dude’s attitude sooooo freakin much. When he gets asked “do you deserve a Kona spot?” he doesn’t miss a beat, “no”. Thanks for making the video even though you don’t feel like it.
This content speaks to me so much more than the other channels out there. Its honest and open. This video motivates me more than all of the overcoming the odds to win content, because I feel it. I've walked the end of a run when I just couldn't get me body to go any further and it felt AWFUL. Watching Lionel do it live was extremely difficult because I was rooting hard for him to win big. But seeing him come out the other side, not hiding from it, doing a video when I know he absolutely doesn't want to, that really speaks to me. We all have completely shit days, but the next time I screw up a race, or it's just so hot my body can't perform, this is what I'll draw on for the energy to finish, get up the next day, and start planning for the race after.
This race only reminded me why you’re my favorite in this sport. You’re on the same level as David Goggins for me. You show us what is possible from a human. I LOVE the fact that you finished this race, especially because you had to walk. When Lionel walks, I know it’s because he just can’t run anymore. Mad respect from me for finishing. It drives me crazy when pros DNF because they have another race around the corner. I get the idea of strategy, but I think for sponsored athletes it should be more important to have a solid fan base rather than winning some races that no one really cares about the next day. You get fans by inspiring people. DNF’s don’t inspire unless of course the DNF was absolutely necessary and not because you wanted to save your legs so you can do better next time. You definitely inspired me and there is no question that you’re my favorite after this race. I’m sure many people feel the same way.
“No Limits, even when you are in last place” love it 🔥
Glad you aren't announcing retirement. I'm sorry you had such a rough race. Your 9th mile split was insane fast 4:59...that's world class for 26.2 alone and after 112 bike!
A ship in the harbor is safe but that’s not what ships are built for. - John Shedd
Way to go, Lionel. Your attitude and behavior here is much more inspiring than an easy win could ever be.
What a great quote. Haven't heard it before.
Massive improvement in your swim Lionel. Hang tough.
Fair play for sticking to it. Sometimes I reckon Talbot is inches away from getting a kick in the stones from Lionel when he asks challenging/probing questions. Good work, both of ye.
Yeah... Some of these questions are too brutal.
I dont know man ... I am a very honest person and still would not hammer a friend like this when he is suffering.
But we dont know whats going on when the camera is off. If Lionel would not be OK with this he would kick Talbots ass i guess.
This was my first triathlon, and getting passed by Lionel and Sam on the bike (they were on 2nd lap, I was on 1st) was the greatest honor of my life. You said the course was miserable and I agree 100%. I basically walked the entire marathon to finish in 14:52. But Lionel, regardless of whether or not you finished 1st or 11th, you crossed that finish line and finished what you started!! The determination is more inspiring than the result! That race was hell but like you said, the very next day I'm ready to sign up for another Ironman. Also I can't wait to hear what you discover about nutrition because I need those tips for myself haha.
Well done!
Jan, Sebi, Patrick, ...all had to go through races where things didn't work out - and conditions in this one were absolutely brutal making this an exploration of new territory for everyone - please give yourself a bit of time - abs no need for excuse/explanation - your day will come, I'm sure !!
we love you, Lionel !!
So happy to hear you're not giving up Lionel. I was worried for the last couple days because of what you said about your career before the race. You're an inspiration. Don't worry about sounding like a broken record, we love hearing your thoughts. Also, thank you so much for allowing the tough questions. Again, so glad you're continuing. We love you.
Seeing this after that race is even more inspiring than if you finished 1st. Excited to watch the inevitable bounce back
Talbot - what an epic edit. That first part was damn near emotional. Lionel - keep working. Your the reason I got into Ironman. I watch your videos for motivation. You’ll win Kona one day, just keep working and keep getting better
Unbelievable class! Can’t imagine anyone having anything but respect for this athlete and so stoked to watch him demolish the demons he carries from this race on the next course!
Dude you’re the real deal and in a lot of ways already the GOAT. Just don’t quit, you’ll get there.
Yes! We don’t need in depth videos baby, anything from you is gold and interesting. That’s why so many people cheer for you ❤️ Let’s get it!!!
You’re a badass Lionel! You inspire many of us not only with your training and athlete capabilities but also as a person who feels and wants more, to be better! Allow yourself to disconnect from all the media and keep up!
Much love! Such an inspiration!!
Another great video. Love the initial race footage music.
The first few minutes of this video, with the perfect music selection in the background, is chilling. SO. WELL. DONE!
Keep fighting Lionel ! You inspire us all
keep your head up! proud of you buddy!
You're awesome! You inspire me to keep pushing.
Legend anyway! You inspire all of us time after time!
I driving back home from doing this one , for people who do not know I was hitting 115 temps on garmin on bike . This proballly hardest one most participants have done had 27pefcent dnf
That’s why he’s been in Tucson training for 2 months.
Head up! You are an inspiration.
Keep it up Lionel! You’re an inspiration!!!
You are a legend Lionel keep it up, I’m 100% sure that you’ll figure it out super soon
Heart of a champ !!! Cant wait to watch you in the next IM again !!!
You are really inspire champ. Keep fight for next race.
Thank you for this video. Honest.
forever my inspiration not just in this sport but in life
We're still here behind you Lionel!🤙🏽
Legendary! Keep it going, you're inspiring a lot of people!
Always inspiring!! Thanks for keeping it real!!
You finished this race and you had respect for the other guys. Nice attitude
The knee jerk reaction when walking "I want to retire" but still finished. Deep inside his heart keeping his honour to the sport and other competitors drives him to finish. The perfect race is in there. " NO LIMITS LIONEL" still inspirational.
Totally inspiring, Lionel!
yes!!!!! you are amazing. love witnessing your journey and getting inspired x
You’re just the best💙💙💙so soo many people want you to stay in triathlon
Lionel, I raced CDA this weekend and had the same exact experience. I am an easy sub 3hr marathoner and can run an easy 1.5hr off the bike in a 70.3. The two full distance IM ended with more than four hour marathon and significant walking. I know it’s nutritional. I hope you figure it out for all of us. I appreciate you sharing in the good and bad times. Keep being an inspiration!!
Big fan. Love the honesty ! Wish you the best in figuring this issue and getting the results you deserve man !
Your a legend man! Sometimes things go wrong but you can only improve from there!
You got this Lionel!!! Small incremental improvements each race you are a true champion brother!!! Do it for yourself not for anyone else 🙌🙌🙌💰💰💰
I LOVE YOU LIONEL!! The intro almost made me cry. YOU WILL GET IT RIGHT AGAIN. YOU WILL GET IT RIGHT AGAIN.
Thanks for being so open about your race
Your so real and relatable! Never change!
I was there watching that day. It was too hot to spectate let alone compete.
Actually I think this is one of the videos I love the most!!!... I mean, is easy talk when you are in great shape, hard is to expose yourself on your worst.... Us as mortals, are in our worst most of the time, that's why is important to see others overcome challenges... Very Inspirational
Looking forward to this! I Love Lionel's outlook on his training and racing and look forward to hearing his honest reflection. Head up Lionel!
Thanks for sharing and being so open on your journey!!!!!! Cheers!!!!
You’re the best Lionel! Love the open and honest dialogue with your fans!! True Lionel fans will stay during the downs. The ups are coming! Chin up 😎👍😀🚴🏻♂️
Respect you when you win and have more respect for when you face adversity.
All my respect for this man. Keep grinding LS.
Great portrayal of how you were feeling. Thoroughly enjoying the process. Good luck for your duel w/ Jan!
First off, the swim was awesome - huge improvement! All the work is paying off. Definitely worth celebrating. Second, huge respect. Don’t ever retire!
I just want to say how much Lionel inspires and motivates me in all aspects of my life. This past weekend I drove all the way up from Southern Idaho to CDA to watch only Lionel race and I would never even think about doing that for anyone else. Watching Lionel struggle in the second half of the marathon (after being neck and neck with Sam Long at the 9 mile marker!) was truly heart breaking to see. Lionel I think we all see how much freaking hard work you put into this sport and we all just want to see you succeed. Seeing all the troll comments on the livestream made me so angry that a man like you can also be part of someone’s joke. Ridiculous. I know you will be on top of that podium for an Ironman, it’s just a matter of when. Never lose the sight and even though that was a miserable experience just know I was left touch, moved, and inspired by you. I love you Lionel ❤️
Thanks Jai!
Thank's you for the honnesty !
Huge Respect. Thank You
For a conselation though. I believe that was one of the BEST swim and bike you have done for an IM.
Actually this is where your grow. We want to see the ups and downs. Can’t always be GREAT! But can always be great in Spirit
Great swim, great ride, tough with the fuling. Great that you finished despite! Im a huge fan and you are enourmously inspirational to me!
We love to see you on your good days, but your hard days and your determination show so much more. Thank you for the inspiration everyday!
Need to dial back the HR on the marathon Lionel 😎 Plus he's so lean there nothing to fall back on if the hydration goes off just a bit 🤠 Lots of cooling on the bike and swim, you only face reality on the run 😜 Your hr will tell you precisely when you're blowing up. You should run with just hr on ur watch. If its high its due to core temp or hydration and ya just gotta slow down! You can't tolerate a single minute in the red on a marathon 👍
People are going to hate, but objectively speaking, you CAN give Jan a run for his money. I can't help but think it's a heat and nutrition combo. You could nail something in a cooler climate all day on your practiced nutrition, your body seems to go AWOL when it's hot. When I watched Sarah True fail time and time again in the heat as one of the best athletes in the women's triathlon circuit, it's clear it's not about talent or fitness it's a variant in her biology that she needs to find the right formula for. I know you'll find it for you!! 💪 #stubbornass
It’s definitely related to core body temperature and nutrition. The fact is his biggest fault is eating highly inflammatory foods.
I love this video, Lionel!
Well done! You still rock! So impressed
You're still a champ in the 70.3s
“Never confuse a single defeat with a final defeat.”
― F. Scott Fitzgerald
You are an inspiration! You will sort that out!
Most inspiring video you have ever posted. Thank you
As long you healthy, and ok, you still out champ!!!
Lionel work on that nutrition, consider consulting Patrick Lange and Frodeno. Also make sure to get your lifts in and nutrition (outside of the race) as well!
Let’s face it. The Germans do things properly. They take such a wholistic and scientific approach to these problems and not a trial and error or just work harder approach. All of the German triathletes know their numbers and blood work, burn rates etc. They never go into a race guessing. P
I can remember being at a gym in Cologne and went to work on my back. There was a back area of the gym and it was set out as a series of machines and each one worked a different area of the back from top to bottom both sides (some I had never even seen before). It was about 7-8 machines that went around in circle circuit and I went through the whole circuit and at the end was just astounded. It had literally worked ever fiber of all my different back muscles. I just sat there and thought why have we been going to gyms since 1940s and not one gym I’ve been to in Canada, USA, Australia or across Asia been set out like this.
Jan has SAP’s sports science division tracking all his data. Lionel should listen to Greg Bennett’s interview with Dan Plews, a doctor of exercise physiology, and coach and founder of endure IQ has two companies doing all the sports science and using AI algorithms to improve training with his other company attic. They need to sponsor Lionel and get working together. It will be the best test case known to humanity.
Lionel is sponsored by WHOOP so clearly they should know some of the best coaches in this area and connect them to him.
We love you, Lionel! You are an inspiration to me!
You are such a big inspiration for all of us!
Never give up brother💥👊
I was doing 270 watts, that shoulda been easy. That’s my easy ride. -LS
It’s hilarious 🤗 I’ve never made it to 270 watts, ever.
It somehow looks that his neutrition is Not working in the heat under long distance race conditions.
Get a neutrition expert (Anne Haug works with - Caroline Rauscher for example) and stop with that Gatorade stuff.
It cannot be the fitness or the willingness to suffer.
Something is off here.
I am so sad... 😢
Have a good recovery...all the best man!
We still believe
does he really use gatorade? hope its only show for sponsorship reasons...
yeah he was usong some crazy gatorade schedule they were discussing on the livestream. honestly i think thats what got him. incredible racing though. thanks for getting me into Triathlon Lionel (and Ari) so grateful to have you both as inspirations on this journey.
i think 70.3 is lionel's sweet spot. i guess it seems like a set back but he could win 70.3 worlds for sure
@@rainbowmonkMC yes, he can win 70.3 worlds.
But for sure He can be great at long distance too. I mean, he got 2nd in Hawaii already behind Patrick. And today he looks to be in better shape.
I remember he mentioned his Gatorade strategy from older videos - several times. I guess thats what he is using.
I know the german top pros (i am from germany that's why i know) all have individual mix because everyone is a bit different under extreme conditions and the stomach can get upset easily, especially in the heat.
I also walked the 2nd half of a long distance because i had stomach issues on the end of the bike. It is so brutal when you are out of energy and the body wants to shut down.
That day i finished and even with the bad time that was - in hindsight - probably my proudest finish. Damn you deserve that medal If you suffer like this ....
Thanks for being such an inspiration Lionel. Great video again Talbot.
You’re an inspiration, Lionel! Keep pushing! Rooting for u!
99% of people would have given up on your situation, and you f***ng grinded till the end! You have no ideia of hpw much of an inspiration you are for everyone as a athlete and a human being!!! Go get Jan's money and put the f** show!
Please get a world-class coach like Frodeno or Kienle does. This will be a game changer for you and your nutrition!
His coach is world class!
And the real question is why he hasn’t been in the sports lab with sports nutritionalists testing his requirements at different temperatures and outputs.
he should have gone to brett sutton years ago
Brett Sutton won’t solve this any better than Dave Tilbury-Davis. They are both exceptional high end coaches. There is no issue with Lionels physical condition - he is mint there. Lionel can, and will work out the magic equation to “solve for x” and when he does, it will be magic!
Just keep going! You are fantastic
Inspiring! Keep going. No limits💪🏻
1st or last #NOLIMIT all the WAY TO THE FINNISH LINE #RESPECT
You sound very humbled by the experience. I've found this to be true. Jesus says, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
we are so proud of you. this is a moment of strength.
Even in defeat, you continue to inspire with your grit and determination.
