Ok, I understand what are you saying. I understand that you don't want to settle for anything less than 1st place and doing your personal best especially since this is your life. However, please understand that in pretty much all these races you are getting 2nd or 3rd. That is something to be extremely proud of. Continue pushing to get to where you need to be, but also understand your little boy will grow up being extremely proud for the results you have obtained! Keep it up!

I was really hoping that one of the lessons from Augusta was "I need to do whatever is necessary to make myself one of the fiercest swimmers in the world", because I truly believe that your swim is the missing piece that's keeping you from world dominance. No one in the field has more grit - I've watched you up close and personally too many times to believe otherwise.

5:35 is the key; Interviewer asks (paraphrasing): "you've talked about fixing aero, talked about fixing your swim... When are you going to DO it?"
Again, Lionel talks about building a team (coaches) and how it will take 2-3 years, and that's all he has left in him.
I've heard him talking about getting a better coach, improving his swim, improving his aero bike position, and improving his dedication/recovery/precision/diet. He's TALKED about this for YEARS. In his own words, it sounds like he still hasn't done it (successfully).
Not to be Debbie Downer, but think Lionel has peaked, and is on the decline. By his own admission, he never got serious enough about his triathlon career. He can TELL you what he needs to do, and everyone loves his videos where he SAYS what he needs to do, but he never does it. He is an elite triathlete, but not a professional.
That's the difference in a professional 2:02 marathoner and an elite 2:10 marathoner. 2:10 is FANTASTIC, but it's miles behind the BEST. (About 2 miles behind 😉.)
All we get now are videos with a disappointed Lionel telling us what he needs to do next time.
When an athlete says they might only have 2 years left, and are talking about becoming a coach, it's already over. 🙄

I was worried when I saw the quote on IG about not racing until you have something better to show, but this is reassuring.
I think the decisions that led up to Augusta happened because Emotional Lionel was in the driver’s seat, and I get that. But now, I think I’m hearing Logical Lionel talking, and that’s reassuring.
Lionel does amazing things when he has a plan and really COMMITS to it long-term. But Emotional Lionel, like Emotional All-Of-Us, is impulsive. And that impulsive nature is what led to Augusta, what led to this extended racing season that hasn’t been very productive. Put Logical Lionel in the cockpit, stick to the game plan no matter what, and we’ll see some truly incredible things happen in 2024. I already KNOW it.

Wtf why? (I admit I laughed pretty hard at your comment). It’s been and is a powerful journey. Quite frankly no one else’s resonates with me much either. Vegan Cyclist does some wild things and is a great story teller but it’s more human interest. Lionel’s journey was one of attacking and trying to win Kona. That journey seems finished for him now because he is giving up on it and starting to do what all humans do and make excuses and accept lesser wins. But the fact is,
      dreams dont sleep.
And it burn in him like a raging blue flame until he dies.
Something seems to have cracked in him after the last Kona. But he made the same dumb mistake he always does in trying to race Kona the week before racing Kona instead of tapering.
Putting TH-cam on hold for awhile and truly dedicating himself to the dreams that are with him might be the best thing for him. Not for us who love his journey and story’s. But it’s now or never for him.

Systematic approach! Lionel has bio mechanical and physical issues which need to be addressed. A lovable knucklehead who has been banging his head against the wall for quite some time. For example, if you are more aerodynamic and efficient on the bike, the drop in power numbers is not a huge deal because you will be fresher for the run or simply capable of riding the same speed while using less energy....i.e. leaving you fresher for the run.....where, once you fix that thing you call a running stride, you will be even faster. The running stride is most likely the result of single-sided breathing while swimming.

    It's called addiction
Obsession when one thought over rules all other thoughts. He is right about himself recognizing the importance of refining his training, it's like that for any athlete. What I mean is tri to do races of better quality than races of quantity. I think what Lionel has left should be planned very precisely to maximize the no limits power and strength
The days of going all out no limits are becoming less and less. Would love to see you train smart and win a 140.6 world title

But I think that he's showing his competitors his cards. They know his strength and weakness. They then up their game. For example, he says what watts he's going to push. So they are going to push just slightly more. That's why he mot beating them on the bike. He's given them a headstart.

"...You will not see ny race again unkess I am a better athlete...."
Yes, but how will you really know if you are a better athlete unless you do a race. Improved times for individual events do not necessarily always translate to a better race. You still have to put all three events together.
At this point, I think a lot of people might agree that we all want to see you really excel at an event... and you still have the potential for that (the Superleague performance showed you had good physiology, even when out of your element), but you might consider taking a several month or year hiatus (consider it a "reset") and focus on something specific, and be the best you can at that one thing. Do the Canadian time trial championships (like Paula did, I think it was). We all know you are a great biker. You are just having a bit of trouble putting all three events together lately. Maybe its age, but whatever the case, you need to prove to yourself that you still have the physioligy. Only way to do that right now is focus on one thing - not triathlon full time. Only do triathlon part time. That is the ONLY way you will get your confidence back.
If not something like Canadian time trial championships, then choose a completely crazy swimming goal like a famous 5 or 6 mile swim ultra and just swim train like a madman for 6 months. It cant possibly be any worse than your swimming performance right now anyway. Getting your speed back after you built up that huge base should be a non issue when you get back to triathlon. Or set a crazy impossible running goal for half marathon, and then do at least 6 prominent half marathons this year. That will prove to yourself that you still have the fitness.

I think around 1,800 people participated (paying about $400 each), so about $720,000 involved in the race. Not sure how much went into operational costs, but about 7% went to athlete winnings.

I’m so glad you’re not swearing anymore! You are such an inspiration and I want my kids to be able to watch your videos. Up until now, I had to wait until they go to bed to watch your updates. You will make a great role model for them. Thank you! ❤

Undoubtedly the over-reaching theme of this video is Capacity. I see another t-shirt in the works. Love this guy. Helped me face my own social anxiety and addictions, undoubtedly.

Yay no more f words! For someone with kids that can’t watch anything without at least one being around, I really appreciate.

When you ask LS for a "quick run through of a race" you ain't ever getting something quick.
