Very nice! So glad you rescued this from the junk pile, so go ahead and shoot it a lot. The service load was 60 grains (I imagine you know that already) but certainly keep it at 45 if that is more comfortable. One thing- you don't need to pound the ball, just a firm scrunch is sufficient. You're compressing the charge, not beating it to dust.
Hi. Nice work on Springfield. I understand exactly those feelings, fear with expectations before the first shot. I got a slightly older musket type and although fired it first time under supervision, when I shoot it recently I shared all that trembling feeling - see my video, unfortunately being alone, only filmed from a tripod. Having no .69 Minnies, I used a patched ball. What is usually not mentioned in any video is all that messy cleaning after each shooting :). Anyway one thing that wonders me, were you not afraid that 35grs load would be too low and that the shot will not come out of the barrel? I understand the safety concerns fully, I am not sure I would be bold enough to fire it, but the opposite risk of having the shot stuck in is also very disturbing.
Great shooting by the both of you! Muzzleloaders are such a joy to shoot
It really is!!
Love from arunachal pradesh India 😍
Nice Springfield. Good job restoring it.
Thanks!
I've been skirmishing with and 1863 Springfield for 38 years. 40 Grs 3F and an RCBS 500 M
Thanks for the tip! Appreciate hearing from an experienced person.
Nice job. I shoot the exact same gun. 42g FFG and a .578 510 grain RCBS mini
Thanks for the tip! I might try a bigger load of powder

Thanks for the tip. That always seems the most scary part.

I had gotten some advice from a few people that it was the right amount of powder to try for a first firing. The topic did come up, though.
It says 1864 on the patent platen.
manufactured in '64, but it's a Model 1863. :)
