1861 Springfield Shooting

  • One of our favorites! The 1861 Springfield rifled musket. Over a million made and the most used long arm during the American Civil War. 58 caliber, it fired the burton minie ball with a service charge of 60 gr of powder (black powder). Southern soldiers often threw down their Enfield rifled muskets in favor of the Springfield because of its' simplicity, excellent production, and ammunition availability (the American cartridges were different than the British Pritchett cartridges). Nothing too in depth in this video, just checking it out.

    Nice video.back in the 70's I belonged to the NSSA and shot with the Second New Jersey Cavalry Co K team. We used one ended cardboard tubes with pre measured black powder and beeswax lubed mini bullets inserted up to the bullet bands. We bit the bullet with our teeth and pulled it out of the tube and pour the powder down the barrel and then pushed the bullet in the barrel and ramed it home, capped and fired. Amazing accuracy from these rifled muskets. Thanks for the video.

    Re-visiting this, It s nice to see a traditional setup, even though you do not 're-enact'.
    I have all my set up in the same way. All my stuff is 1850s themed. I made all the holsters, scabbards, pouches, belts, bags , . myself. I operate/maintain them all traditionally as well. I cast from period molds etc.
    50yds. I l o v e ranged shooting! I fire my Authentic Colts from 12, 25, 35, 50, 75 and 100yds. Not rested (free hand). My favorite target is the period 1'' layered/spaced pine boards. This is a g r e a t target for simulating 'wound path' and various penetration effects as the ball passes through the various grain/knot textures, shard/splinter , . The recoverabl ball displays the deformity etc too.
    Good stuff.
    Btw, I am Navy. Is it alright for me to be watching this?

    Nice rig. I'm the same way. I feel like, if you're going to have a 150 year old rifle, then you should have the correct acutrments as well as period correct tools. I'm just finishing up my build on a real 1861 Bridesberg (identical to a Springfield) if you could, could you get me the measurement between the muzzle and the front sight? Soldering the front sight down is one of the last things I have to do and I want to get it right as it's crital for mounting a bayonet. Thanks for the help. Nice shooting BTW

    At 50 yards you generally had to aim low. It's because of how the sights were set.The originals had a " battle sight zero" out near 100 yards. Is the gun a Pedersoli or an ArmiSport? What size mini e ball were you using? Great video, thanks for sharing!

      As was expected, the ball flies true at 100 using fine sighting, the bottom of the rear sight, I have to cast some more because I had a lot of fun making this video. They throw around 575-576, 495-500 gr fairly confident from a Lee original style mold. It's a pedersoli and the cartridges were loaded with 60 gr goex ffg. Thanks for watching and check out the rest of the channel!

    • @SteveAubrey1762
      @SteveAubrey1762 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Will do! I have an old ArmiSport O used to reenact with and I bought the Pedersoli about 4 years ago to hunt with.
      I'm a middle aged guy, and my eyes aren't what they used to be. I drilled a small hole in the mid sight leaf to form a crude prep sight. I beveled the edges of the hole then cold blued the sight leaf. I adjust easier for me to see than the standard rear sight. Really like your channel, especially the black powder videos! Keep an coming!😀

    @craigsawicky1643 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    IF one includes ALL the various Springfield Models that were used during the Civil War, it wins hands down in numbers. As to the 1861 being more numerous than the Enfields you might get an argument. The Enfield was Imported by Both sides,putting it's numbers close to the one million point also,while one source states production on the Springfield was 700,000. .

    • @rifleman17hmrshooter
      @rifleman17hmrshooter  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      By sheer numbers the Springfield had the advantage, but Enfield sights were better I think. Also because the Enfields were meant to be fired with the Pritchett cartridge, I think the American Burton cartridges caused loading and fouling issues in the Enfields being used, hence all the stories of Confederates throwing down their Enfields for Springfield pick ups. I like the Springfield a lot, the sights leave something to be desired, but a good rifled musket nonetheless

      If there wss an ember when you charged the barrel with powder it would have flashed off before you insertec the minie ball.
      Besides, leave the hammer down on the spent cap doesn't allow any oxygen to enter the chamber front the nipple.
      In all the loading back in the day, they thumbed the minie ball into the barrel.

      Yep. In the School of the Soldier (CW infantry basic training) when learning to "load in nine times", all of that tapping and clanging around always attracts the attention of the sergeant and makes him apoplectic. "Ram it home! You're not churning butter!". In addition to what was mentioned above, it's a bad habit to get into because the standard was three aimed shots per minute. Twenty seconds per aimed shot leaves no time for wasted motions. Very good overall. For example, as opposed to many muzzle loader shooters I've seen, he appeared to be changing the cap at the correct time.
