Shadows Of The Empire - A Star Wars Retrospective

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 ก.พ. 2025
- Shadows of the Empire was a 1996 Star Wars multimedia Lucasfilm project which offered all the fanfare of a movie release without the movie. Consisting of a N64 video game, a book, comic series, toy line, role playing game, soundtrack and more it paved the way for modern Star Wars projects and marketing. It's a pretty long video. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the patience on this one, it was a long time coming. Any suggestions for the next project?
Mr Sunday Movies loved your Deathly Hallows pt. 1 deep dive. Do something similar to that!
I liked this so well I want you to do it again lol
hey is there anywhere we can check out the animated/narrated clips on their own?
Read all the book titles you coward!
I'd love to see a deep dive on what went wrong with the Andrew Garfield spider-man movies.
okay, those cg recreations are honestly incredible. without a doubt the best bit of star wars content that ever came out of shadows of the empire
Damn, thanks mate! :)

Coruscant appeared visually in Star Wars Tie Fighter in 1994. It was called Imperial Center, like in Dark Empire.
Amazing video.
Yeh, like how Luke just calls it "the Imperial planet" in Dark Empire. I think they had placeholder names but those were rarely used outside the literature. I don't remember if the X-Wing novels were released before or after this, but I think they refer to it as Coruscant. Man, TIE Fighter was such a cool game.
Coru-skant
@@youwayo Cut, let's try it again
Good to see you, Eck! Also yeah, I think the EU got around this by saying that Coruscant was renamed to "Imperial Center" after the Empire rose to power, then it was renamed back to Coruscant once the New Republic took over. TIE Fighter and X-Wing were excellent games, and I loved the cutscenes back then (I was a young kid at the time).
@@Turd_Rocket They were released about the same time, those books. Though Coruscant was used as a name from 1991.
This video was excellent! Love learning the behind the scenes of Lucasfilm when it comes to the creation of multi-media projects and their later influence in future Star Wars projects. Hope to see something similar done of the Clone Wars multi-Media project!
The N64's storage may have been a limitation at the time, though the artwork filling in for cutscenes has aged a hell of a lot better than the animated cutscenes in the PC version.
12 meg's of N64 power.
Who else is excited for MaClunky: A Star Wars Story?
In the end and the beginning there was only MaClunky
MaClunky sounds like an Irish, or Scottish name.
Perhaps "Maclunky" is Star Wars version of "Rosebud".
To be honest, I would watch the hell out of a Greedo movie.
I hope McDonalds gets a McClunkey sandwich at some point. That would be wonderful.
This is still my favorite Star Wars story outside of the original trilogy. The novel and the N64 game are amazing and Dash Rendar is one of the best Star Wars Legends characters. Great video.

I was convinced as a 10 year old that the Star Wars movies were called:
A New Hope
Shadows of the Empire
Return of the Jedi
Same here, shadows was my first exposure to the Star Wars universe, so when I saw the original trilogy I was like "OH NEAT THESE MUST BE SUPPLEMENTAL"
I thought I remembered a trailer and a title card for SOTE as well. Mandela Effect at its best.
I thought there was 9 chapters in Tottal the last 3 being Shadows of the empire
Dude, as a nine-year old I was such a huge fan of origonal recipe Star Wars, I held out hope that they'd make this into show or movie until the release of Phantom Menace. Shadows of the Empire like validated my outdated nerd obsession back then, since of course I saw Star Wars by checking it out from the city library. 😆 So, before Shadows of the Empire almost nobody knew what the hell I was talking about because everybody loved Ninja Turtles.
@@YoungWizO7 there was a trailer for shadows that was made to look like a movie trailer. They took it down because they were afraid it would confuse people .he discussed it in the video

Ahh back when the Martian Manhunter was part of the empire.
After seeing this fantastic vid I realized why Rise of Skywalker Just didn't work for me. I realized that you cannot have the emperor without Darth Vader. That dynamic is absolutely necessary because both of them are half a characters. Only together are they really this individual that comes to life. It doesn't matter that they're hardly ever together in the original movies only that they both are there.
In fact I think the real reason vader died in the end was because he figuratively AND literally killed half of himself in the act of saving luke.
Been waiting for this for a while and it didn’t disappoint, great work
What is this, a crossover episode?
I will says this about Shadows of the Empire:
It's definitely a piece of fiction that's part of the Star Wars franchise

Thanks mate, really glad you enjoyed it!
This was fascinating - having not lived through this, I had no idea there was this level of fanfare around SotE. This video was awesome, and a huge achievement, really great stuff.

Shadows Of The Empire would be a great standalone movie!

I spent my whole life thinking I was playing as Han Solo on the N64.
Apparently you never watched/read one the game's cutscenes, since one of the first cutscenes shows your character talking to Han Solo. So yeah...you're an idiot.
@@DiamondDead "you're an idiot because your (probably) child self didn't notice or remember something from years ago"
Yeah okay
@@DiamondDead You were a kid once too. It's possible for someone to only play a game as a child and then never again and have a memory such as this, misidentifying the character. No reason to call someone an idiot. Also, let's be fair, he's basically Han Solo anyway.
It was probably on purpose. They don't really give him non Han Solo characteristics and what legit gamer watches cutscenes?
I didn't speak English as a child and yet played tons of games not translated. I see this happening to me as well.
This may have taken you a while, but I got to say I just love long form content from you. This was interesting and entertaining so thank you for all the hard work on it!
By far one of my favorite videos on this channel, right next to Corn of Coblin. Keep up the great work
I'm in my 30s so I devoured anything and everything SotE. The game, comic, figures, novel, all of it.

I honestly can’t believe this video doesn’t have more views. It might be my favorite from this channel, which is already my favorite channel. And it’s one of the best Star Wars videos I’ve ever watched. Excellent work all around.
I think it would be interesting to see Dash make a return in the Mandalorian season 2.
Add my boy Durge to Mandalorian as well
Ive always thought Bill Pullman would make an excellent Dash Rendar. Give him some fading brown salt and pepper hair and i think he could pull it off and timeline would probably still work

I was really looking forward to this and you didn't disappoint. Shadows was a huge part of my childhood and will always hold a place in my heart. Thanks for the great video!
Joel McNeely is such an underrated composer. Sad he's never had more of a career.
I often wonder when people say this, as he was very successful relative to most in his field if he just didn't want more success.
Like he could probably live quite comfortably off of residuals, if he's made sensible financial choices he may have no need to work.
I mean so many people fall in the category of "under appreciated artist" yet so many of the massively successful people in Hollywood are pretty mediocre.
It makes you forget that if you live a normal lifestyle that even moderate success in Hollywood is probably more than most people ever expect to reach as well as being plenty. Probably most people make as much money as they need to to get out of Hollywood and then don't really try to come back.

James, this is just fantastic work! Of course, Mr Sunday Movies is terrific when you and Mason are just screwin' around, but seeing a longer form vid with a bunch of collaborators and research... well you knocked that out of the park too! Shadows deserved a big video and it's awesome to see you give it that treatment. I think everyone just expected a Caravan of Garbage for the PC/N64 game, and this blew away all of our expectations. Just wanted to say it was *excellent* work, mate! You deserve some major kudos.
Great work mate! As a person who had little to no knowledge of Shadows of the Empire, I thought this was fascinating and fantastic!
I love all of your other content but this project was actually one of the best things I’ve seen on TH-cam in a long long time. Please do something like this again! Good stuff
The novel is amazing! It feels like Star Wars. Steve Perry did such a good job that Lucas considers it to be an actual Star Wars story.
You are making me cry here, I have the books and the toys since i was a lad and I loved the game on the N64 and the badasseray of Dash surving a Death star expolsion by jumping to hyperspace at the last second..all while (and after) watching the rerelases..I was about 8 at the time..great times..obs holy crap Sal did the VO on those 3D scenes (which captured How I imagined the books perfectly) I wouldnt have guessed that..Glad you gave Shadows and Legends its time in the Black Sun
That level with the speeder bike is one of my favourites, could never get that secret ending though!
I think to get the "escaped from Xizor's Fortress/Battle Station explosion" ending you need to play on the hardest difficulty.
I did, but only with cheats. Don't know if that counts
I absolutely loved this! I was young enough that I never really experienced Shadows of the Empire, so this video really helped me understand what it was, how big a deal it was, and how it’s influenced Star Wars to this day! Daaayyum! I remember this! I was a kid when it came out and this introduced me to Star Wars, with the 1997 re-edition of the trilogy.
Of course the toys and the video game made a huge impact on me hah!

What a shame that this isn't canon, you could tell this was an absolute passion project for those involved. A very nuanced and complex story that definitely took things further in the SW universe.
Prince Xizor is one of the most interesting additions in Star Wars, really wished they could've kept him and his story that ties into the Skywalker saga. I would even say that he definitely seems more interesting than Jabba, since you know, they actually flesh out his motivations and personality beyond being a feared crime lord.
