It's whenever the do comics that REALLY impresses me. They animate the frames and I'm still not 100% sure if they do it themselves or just pull existing motion comics or something.
There's an even better version of the holiday special that still contains all the TV adverts and channel promos from the original broadcast. Its worth trying to find it.
The funniest part of the holiday special was that since the prequels were before disney made everything but the movies and the clone wars legends, everything about Kashyyyk in episode 3 had to look like the holiday special.
I bet Luke tried showing him one of those fancy Dark Side Caves and the melting face of his father and those dead eyes of his Jedi master in his head that he just couldn't unsee drove him to turn against Luke and kill Han.
I do think the idea of the empire transmitting footage of tattoine daily so everyone else feels more content that they're doing better is a pretty good premise

Seeing this on t.v. as a kid at the time it came out was actually amazing. This was pre-dvd, even pre-vhs, and seeing Star Wars movies again after they left the theater was an impossibility. No one was complaining about how bad this special was at the time; everyone enjoyed seeing these characters again. It also wasn't terribly off compared to the types of Christmas specials that were popular at that time in the 70's; it just sticks out like a sore thumb now because it's out of context. Lumpy was the bomb.

The lack of access to media was really striking compared to now. I mean, Star Wars fans at the time were desperately huddled in front of the TV to have this offal shoveled at them. And it was 6 years of puberty between Empire and Return.

I'm 100% convinced that the holiday special was only made because TBBT would feature it and Mark Hamil later on and ONLY to make Stuart seem really smart and hot to Denise (which he is, since he owns a comic book store, we knew he was smart).
Chewie doesn't seem to spend much time with his family, especially since Lumpy became a Sith Lord and Itchy refused to get treatment for his sex addiction.
Interesting to note that the Julia Child’s impersonator is also the Old Man robot. Both were played by Harvey Korman of The Carol Burnett Show fame. Korman also played Krelman-the alien in the bar who poured his drink into the top of his head.
I like how Harvey Korman, who was a veteran of these type of variety act things -- see The Carol Burnett Show, as well as being a star in the comedy classics Blazing Saddles and History of the World, isnever named and just reffered to as a random guy. Honestly, did you boys realize he's the multi-armed woman, the broken robot pitchman and the head drinker? Granted, none of the performances were funny. Quite shit, actually. For me, the most disturbing part was the robot man struggling to survive while teaching a class. It felt like I was watching a man teach a class while dying from a heart attack.

Interesting to note that the Julia Child’s impersonator is also the Old Man robot. Both were played by Harvey Korman of The Carol Burnett Show fame. Korman also played Krelman-the alien in the bar who poured his drink into the top of his head.
I like how Harvey Korman, who was a veteran of these type of variety act things -- see The Carol Burnett Show, as well as being a star in the comedy classics Blazing Saddles and History of the World, isnever named and just reffered to as a random guy. Honestly, did you boys realize he's the multi-armed woman, the broken robot pitchman and the head drinker? Granted, none of the performances were funny. Quite shit, actually. Still Harvey Korman deserves some props.

For me, the most disturbing part was the robot man struggling to survive while teaching a class. It felt like I was watching a man teach a class while dying from a heart attack.
I remember as a little kid watching this thinking "ok star wars! Cool!" By the end I remember thinking something along the lines of Wtf did I just watch? And where was the star wars part? And this was coming from a relatively simple minded kid. Star wars canon best left in obscurity.

The holiday special planet was Kazzook. This later became what we know now as Kashyyyk(don't know if I spelled this right).
They should have featured "Christmas in the Stars: Star Wars Christmas Album" from 1980. It had a young John Bongiovi (Jon Bon Jovi) singing on it.
Yep. It was his first recording. He was a janitor at the studio it was being recorded at and his uncle either worked there or had some pull around the studio.

I can't tell if people are being serious or if they are just joking around when they say that The Last Jedi is worse than the Holiday Special. Personally, and I'm being serious now, I'd gladly sit through The Last Jedi again than watch this... THING. I haven't even seen the Holiday Special all the way through, but it *still* makes me uncomfortable viewing it through TH-cam reviews!

Harvey korman. He played 2 or 3 characters in this movie. He played the cooking lady, the old broken robot. And he played kelman. He was a very big named comedian in the USA. Worked hysterically with Tim Conway and carrol burnette.
