  • Please read entire description before attempting this!
    In this video I'll show you how to clean the throttle body on a GM 3.8L Series 2. The vehicle featured in this vehicle is a 2001 Pontiac Bonneville. (note: this procedure may not apply to every 3.8L series 2 engine out there. If your vehicle has a super charged 3.8L then It would not be advised to do this. Do not clean the throttle body in this manner if you have a super charged engine.)
    Cleaning the throttle body is one of the easiest and best things you can do for your vehicle. It helps to maintain throttle response, engine idle and overall performance. Also, its supper cheap!
    Use intake cleaner not carburetor cleaner.
    Do note: Disconnecting the battery on some vehicles will put the radio into "anti-theft" mode. If this is the case for your vehicle you will need a code to get your radio working again after the battery has been disconnected. This code is usually located on a card in your owners manual. Be sure you have it before doing this.
    Also Note: After spraying intake cleaner through the mesh let the vehicle idle for a while and then rev it a few times to help get the intake cleaner off the mesh. Also, after letting it run and reaving it a few times take some compressed air and spray it though the mesh. The goal is to remove all of the chemical from the mesh so you'll need to clean every inch of the mesh, every hole. MAKE SURE ALL THE INTAKE CLEANER IS COMPLETELY REMOVED FROM THE MESH. Do this before putting the MAF sensor back into the throttle body. By making sure all the chemical is off the mesh before installing the sensor you will prevent potential damage to the sensor from contamination.
    Read and follow the instructions provided by the maker of the intake cleaner used.
    Perform cleaning in a well ventilated area!
    Warning! Doing automotive repair is dangerous. Use extreme caution! Heed all warnings applicable to the project you are performing. Read, understand and follow all warning labels located on the container of any chemical you may be using! Keep hands face and body away from intake as back fires can happen. Have a fire extinguisher readily available. Repair your vehicle at your own risk!

    You can take your honeycomb mesh screen off to clean inside better. There is an internal snap ring with a hole in each end that holds it in. Put a nail or something small in one of the holes and take out that end and work your way around until it falls out. Be careful not to damage the honeycomb.🙂

    First off nice how to video. Second the never ending honeycomb filter debate. To remove or leave in? The only reason the screen is the throttle body is too straighten the airflow going over the mass air flow sensor itself. Why? To help provide the ECM with a steady accurate reading from the mass air flow sensor at idle. Yup that's it! It improves your idle by basically stabilizing the airflow going into it. Is there any reason to remove the honeycomb filter? Yes! Flow bench tests have shown time and time again those honeycomb filters restrict 10%-15% of airflow going into the engine. Therefor causing less high RPM horsepower, hardly an issue for a everyday driver or commuter car. I've been working on the series II 3.8 for well over a decade and have two of these engines in my own privately owned cars. I have one stock 3.8 in a impala and one 3.8 SC in Pontiac GTP with motor modifications done. Both have the screen removed and both idle just fine. I've actually had the 3.8 supercharged series II on a dyno and seen a HP gain of 13hp removing both the screen and stock airbox. Can't say what the amount the screen was responsible for since both where done at the same time. But a educated guess would be a 3-4hp gain.

    My 03 Lesabre idled kinda noisily before doing this and now it is super quiet. I noticed also while trying to manually open the throttle that it would get stuck due to the buildup(didn’t really notice when using the pedal) and now it doesn’t get stuck. Amazing video! Mine would stall out if I sprayed it without opening the throttle(even a tiny spray) so as long as I opened the throttle a little bit I could spray this in there without it stalling.

  • @MrSFSTUDIOS
    @MrSFSTUDIOS 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You could also get a new throttle-body gasket, and remove the throttle body to clean it. That way, you would remove the egr crud from the back-side of the throttle plate. You are only spraying the front of the plate. I bet the back side still is coated with sticky black goo,

There was a pop at one point and some smoke... somehow the vacuum lines popped off and one of their boots melted slightly. I also managed to stall the engine a few times doing this, even though I was using the throttle wire to rev the engine. No big deal, works fine now -- but it was very unnerving.

    • @kaceyzeffel5793

      that could be dirty fuel injectors… or it’s moisture somewhere it shouldn’t be.. i just had that happen to mine as well. i’ve got a 1998 oldsmobile 88 same motor. i checked my plugs, packs and wires and everything was all good. i now have noticed that sometimes after driving a long period of time, i’ll fuel up, and as soon as i turn the car over, my car will roughly idle between 1000rpm-2000rpm. it goes up and down, and when it goes down below 1000 it feels/sounds like it wants to stall out. i’m not too sure what it could be, i’ve been told it’s probably vapor lock.. as soon as i stick the car into drive and press on the gas, it wants to die on me so i have to really kinda get goin on it before it dies out on me. all as this is happening my gas pedal is stiff, i hope cleaning this will help me in my case! for as i’ve already replaced my idle control valve..

    I'm having no progress removing the snorkel with my bare hands as I've seen other people do in their videos. I'm wary of using anything to pry it off as I don't' want to damage the seal or the TB itself. And I'm wary of spraying any lubricant because I don't want to get anything in my intake.

Just get a set of small tamper proof torx bits and you should have a T20 in there. Its a common size. Make sure they are tamper proof.

      Are you using this spray: CRC 05078 Throttle Body and Air-Intake Cleaner
      Because in other videos explaining how to use that spray they don't spray much. Also, after spraying they dry it with a rag, so I'm afraid to spray it through the mesh and possibly leave it wet inside there. Any thoughts?

    • @dooruk1905
      @dooruk1905 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Got you, is the purpose of compressed air is to push the liquid out or just to make it evaporate faster?
      My worry is that the dissolved gunk might still sit behind the mesh if that makes sense?
      Just by changing air filter my vehicle runs much smoother so I'm really leaning towards trying the spray as well and I already have it.
