Eric I think you should ignore the comments section negativity. I teach and it seems like my students put me under a microscope in an attempt to find anything and everything I do “incorrectly”. Everyone is an expert when they aren’t doing the work in front of an audience. Thanks for your awesome content and great attitude even when the idiots are blowing your phone up.

In regards to people calling Eric's shop up and asking/begging for advice on auto repair: Plenty of Forums exist to assist in auto repair. Own a Subaru? (which I now do....*shudder* LOL) There's a wonderful bunch of people on a Forester forum that is great to deal with! Need general advice? I know this name gets visions of welded in ball joints.... But ericthecarguy dot com Has a great forum full of people with tons of experience that can answer most questions. Vehicle specific issues a simple google search can point to appropriate groups that can help.
If you need personal life advice? Tell it to your priest, counselor, etc...
Respect Eric O's ability to run a business first. He's not making mega bucks off these videos. His main source of income is still turning a wrench and shipping repaired vehicles down the road...

I wish all of us had access to known honest auto shops. It's frustrating just to get my oil changed. Seems all the shops around here have a problem with transparency, you know, being able to actually see the the mechanic break the seal on the $10 quarts of synthetic oil and pour them into my car engine etc etc.
Eric, it's amazing to watch you at work, professional, ethical, hard working, going well beyond most shop mechanics to ensure the work is done right.
Raise your prices, I'd still be a loyal customer knowing the work you do on my car would be God like.
    Thanks for sharing.

When I was a mere lad, many years ago in college and just married we needed a second vehicle. So not having much of a budget we saved a few bucks here and there on meals and bought a 1984 Ford escort from a used car lot. What a pile! It had vented rotors but the previous owner didn't believe in changing brake pads. One of the pads was nearly all gone and the rotor was held on by remnants of just a few of those cooling fins. No money for parts so I went to the junkyard and found used rotors in good shape and their brake pads. Fixed that up just fine. Given the money is there I always do new pads with new rotors. But a little coarse sandpaper can do wonders to flatten out a newish but grooved brake pad. ;)

Every time you do brakes and remind the folks to pump'em up before engaging the vehicle into a drive gear it always reminds me of the one time many years ago when I was working as a mechanic and in the middle of a brake job the owner of the shop decided to argue with me about something and of course the E350 van I was working on was done except pumping the brakes, so peeved at the owner over this argument I thought I had already pumped the brakes and I jumped in the Van threw it in reverse had to bump the peddle to get over the rack hump and out the door I shot, pumping the brakes as fast as I could but now rolling downhill at a pretty good clip, thank goodness the owner parked his Mercedes at the bottom of the hill or I would have ended up in the ditch, unfortunately an E350 van moving at a pretty good clip with no brakes did a wonderful job to the front end of the owners Mercedes and just a little lite scratch on the bumper of the Van, the owner thought I did it intentionally, but honestly I simply got side tracked due to the owner and forgot.
In the end I think I was lucky I didn't need help pulling the seat cushion out of my backside from the intense pucker factor that I experienced that day, the owners Mercedes was completely devastated in the front end.
I learned two things that day, always double check yourself regardless and a Ford E350 van with a heavy duty step bumper will kill a Mercedes.

I had the same thing happen, but store manager came out in a run saying is this done? As he hopped in the car I was finishing the paperwork on at my toolbox. I was going to pump up the brakes, test drive, then park on the apron and run keys and work order in. The manager floored it out of my bay as I was screaming "the brakes aren't pumped up!!!" Luckily, we were a good year dealership and had just got a shipment of new tires in. He ended up ba king into the pile of tires and getting stopped with no damage. He said he thought it was done as it was off the lift, I told him it's done when I park it and bring the keys in.

When I worked at a tire shop 20+ years ago (only did tires). The main mechanic did something to the brakes on the car I was working on, didn't bother to tell me. Was a full sized van, scared the shit out of me.

Honda Pilot, was up on a lift, last car of the day, still a newbie at the time. Did a full brake job, wheels were back on, and I had forgotten about pumping the brakes. Backed out and there was about twenty five feet to where the lot went over a wall into a ditch. Wound up throwing the car into park, yanking the ebrake, and stomping on the brakes as fast as I possibly could trying to get it to stop. Hit the little curb at the end of the wall at about 5mph and stopped. Didn't go into a ditch. Nobody saw. I nearly had a heart attack.

Wagner ThermoQuiet... WIsh this video was posted before I bought some for my beater van in summer 2018. They do freaking squeal mad. Summer 2018 I replaced all rotors and brake pads, as well as did proper rust cleaning, lubricating, etc the SMA way, and the squealing started not too long after. For a beater car, I don't really care too much about the squealing (radio volume up). But I definitely learned my lesson and used different brand brake pads for wife's car this spring.

    Nice work as usual!

I would have liked to have seen what the inspection failure on the other side looked like, but great job as always. I had a little bit of a weird experience when my brain started filling in the missing brake-clean sound effect and then abruptly stopped when it wasn't in the video, but I enjoyed it, again, as always.
Oh... and STOP CALLING THE FRICKING SHOP, people!

Oddly enough I have to watch a mechanic repair video from this channel to wake up lol. It's better than the news, and I love fixing things stupid engineers design ;)

    Another all in a day's work - again. :-)
Been watching your videos for quite a while, finally subscribed about a month or so ago and just want to say, I enjoy you working on cars, rusty, crusty or no as I learn something new from your videos as I do work on mine when it needs it. Back when I was younger and had a Civic (1983 DX hatchback) I did the rear brakes, the fronts, replaced the CV boots (outer with 2 pc units, big mistake), replaced the alternator, I think did a thermostat and I forget what else on that car. But being that I'm on the west coast, we don't deal with rust like you do so a 13 YO car can still be relatively rust free.
Now, I don't do as much of the big stuff as one, I don't have a good spot at my house (no driveway or garage) and have the use of my buddy's driveway when I do oil changes and the like.
Sorry to hear of people not understanding that while you do videos to help other's out there, you don't have time for free advice over the phone as it takes way more time out of your day to deal with than a single video.
Keep it up and some suggestions for how to deal with this are given and I agree that a solution along those lines is likely, though I don't know if you need to change your phone # itself, just have a # that can go to VM and Vanessa and just dump without listening if need be and ensure caller ID for any #'s that come up and there are services on the web that can reverse search the offending #, but at a cost, but it might be negligible compared to what you bring in.
As to those that keep saying they use an old pad and a C clamp to push in the brake cylinder, not all cars you can do this, This Taurus, some Toyotas, Mazda and others require you to twist and push in as they screw in instead.

  • @thefordmaniac
    @thefordmaniac 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Also to all those saying I use a c clamp..go ahead...you won't get that caliper to push in...cause she's a spin in! I remember the helper trying to use a c clamp on one of these...boy it took him about 20 min of head scratching before he figured that one out!
also, reusing old pads.. is perfectly fine. I love how everyone likes to question eric. He knows what he's doing. ✌

I have to admit, I was always taught to lightly sand the old pad faces against a flat plate before reinstalling to knock down the high ridges that had been running in grooves in the old rotor. Yea you don't have to, but it seemed to make the pad wear more even.

  • @yanleb1
    @yanleb1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

I do reuse old brake pads with new rotors if they are thick enough BUT I always remove the edge groove by sanding it down with a belt sander. Ok, I'm loosing a little pad thickness but I don't loose the whole pad and I get 100% brake pad width contact with the rotor. This is important because rust will begin to form on the rotor edge where the worn pad don't make contact.

I will be the 1st one to say Eric does a very honest video . Some times it would be nice to help some one and it doesn't have to be about the green back. Hell to date you have made 6 figures

Get a phone answering machine that gives the caller options. Press 1 to make a appointment. Press 2 to check status on your vehicle being repaired. Press 3 to ask technical questions. "NOTE", you must first enter your charge card information before pressing 3. We charge a $125 a half hour rate for technical information with a half hour minimum. Set the machine up so the #3 call will not go through unless the charge card number has been entered and approved by the automated system. If they call 1 or 2 say you must press 3 and hang up.

Eric, Love the videos BTW. I agree with your opinion of Wagner but, Wagner pads with the bumps on the backing plate do not require lube. In fact, the "bump" is friction material. You know how friction material and oil get along.

He is showing how to do a quick & cheerful clear coat repair.
He selects one portion of the car just to show the steps.
Most people will not contemplate respraying an old vehicle due to the high cost.

I wind up using the old needle nose trick all the time, usually because I keep losing that little cube shaped socket.
The only pads worse then the Wagner TQs are the cheapo Wagners that turn your rims black after 2000 miles with all the dust. I usually use Centrix, no squeal, low dust.

Little life Lesson I have learned. If anything is advertised Quiet then it will be (noisy), if it says Quality it is probably not, If it is Longer lasting it probably has a half life of another brand. A good product speaks for itself many times by word of mouth, just like a business that does good work such as yours.

Hey I'll just it to belle tire. I'll just wonder why I have vibrations and can't stop? Oh we "belle" didn't have right parts but we "jerry rigged it". You are a good person you do a very job to help people without ripping them off. Maybe you should make a vid of why prices are what they are at shops. Alot of people don't know what it takes to run a shop.
