I’ve been an auto mechanic and industrial maintenance mechanic my whole life and enjoyed doing it. I’m definitely not the kind of person that can do a desk job. I have made a good living financially and enjoyed going to work each day. Nothing worse than going to work and hating what you do every day.
Definitely pay attention in school, but there's nothing wrong with being a mechanic. You do a great job of showing proper diagnostic procedures and that is not something everyone is capable of doing. Many 'mechanics' don't have the mindset for a proper process of elimination and troubleshooting.
Certainly not. More people should know how. We'd be a stronger nation if they did. It teaches you logical thought processes and not flights of fancy. I can manage do quite a bit of mine but I come here to learn more about what I don't know. There's a smart cookie on the other end of these videos.

Hey Eric, I have wrenched on cars all my life and at times got discouraged and said "I'll just take it to a shop." Generally that works out to me not taking it to a shop (I'm stubborn and cheap) but just living with the car problem or doing it half-assed and being cranky/angry. I have to say though since watching your videos I really appreciate your positive attitude and willingness to tackle any job. When I'm in them middle of a job now, I slow down and think what would that guy on youtube do... If anything you make my day just that much better! Believe me there's always lots of wrenching to do now with our current fleet of 3 BMWs and a Honda. God Bless and keep on keeping on!

Love your videos. Your comment on school is important but in the last 25 years the focus has been to get everyone to go to college which has turned it into big business and many of our children are up to their ears in debt. During this push the trades have all been forgotten. We now have a lack of good mechanics, building tradesmen, etc. My father steered me towards the metals industry and I became a journeyman tool and die maker where I learned many skills including mechanics. What you are doing is a very necessary skill and I applaud you for what you do and teach others.
You do such good work that your "crappy" work would still be better than 90% of the goofball "mechanics" in this business. You're a professional and it shows in your work. Thanks for all the awesome videos!!!

It's the most annoying question I get in my profession. "My pinball machine is not working - how do I fix it?" or "What do you think is wrong" or "How much is it going to be to fix it" - all by email, when I have never seen their machine of course

I also have had someone say I want a spark plug for a lawn mower and when you ask for the model they say aren't they all the same lol. It's ok though it gives the employee something to talk about when they leave

Love your channel! Decided to replace my rear differential with a used one on an 07 Dodge Ram 1500 about 3 months back. Bought the unit for $300 CAD. Used Carfax and was written off with 53,000 km! Super easy process!
When you took this for a drive I was like “hold on, I have been through that town before” had to look you up and couldn’t believe you were a half hour away lol. Love the videos and have learned a lot! Thank you for posting them!
Eric... it's why we like you. There is more "Crappy work places" than "Good work places". It's the way it is. It's why most of us wish we had reputable mechanic like yourself near us. I always give the pickle slice the shawn woods dead mouse flip when I go there. Love pickled eggs, but something about the way micky D does them turns two thin slices into a three day long gut bomb. Even the juice left behind is too much pickle.
Eric I always enjoy watching your videos,you are quite the mechanic. I wish I could find somebody as good as you near where I live. I am always buying and selling vehicles and fix what I can by watching TH-cam videos but a good mechanic would be awesome to have for things that are beyond me.
So Eric, you know TH-cam is a double edged sword. The blessing is the money I guess, and the pain is the stupid freeloading TH-camrs that show up and want something for nothing. On the other hand, I had a go at replacing my daughters front hubs on her 2012 Yukon the other day. I followed every single piece of advice and procedures that you have shown on your videos. And guess what? It went perfectly. Saved her a ton of bucks and I was a hero. So perhaps there is more blessing in what you do than you might think. I have enjoyed your videos for a long time and am an admirer. I have never commented before and I guarantee you that I'll never call unless my car somehow breaks down in upstate New York! But there are plenty of idiots that will and I guess that comes with the territory. I truly appreciate the efforts you make to ensure a job is done right. "Pay attention in school!" In 10th grade electronics our teacher told us if we paid attention we would be inside eating donuts while the others were outside digging ditches. A couple years before I retired I found myself 55 feet up a tower, replacing a section of waveguide that was sheared off by wind and ice. The temperature was right around 30F and the wind was steady at 35 mph. We had snow catted up to 9000 feet to do the job and would snowcat back down - it sounds like a _lot_ more fun than it is. (The #1 cause of snowcat deaths is rollover; the #2 cause is drowning. Snow on thin ice over a lake looks _so_ inviting!) It was one of the dozen or so hairiest things I have done. I'm beginning to think the teacher was not entirely accurate in his prediction.
It's been awhile, but I saw a series of photographs, where some office workers held up a sign to some construction guys working on some high steel in the winter, overcast and windy. The sign read "It's 72 degrees in here". A few minutes later the guys out side held up a sign that read, "It's $50 an hour out here"' . This was back in the 1970s 0r 1980s. I still get a chuckle out of that.
I love watching you work, this video is great cause it is nice to see you get as frustrated as I do sometimes! The difference is you deal with rust I am a diy'er and deal with never having the right tool at the time. I found out that the right tool makes a huge difference. Oh, and a lift would be nice hahaha
Was a heating engineer in the U.K. till I retired 3 years ago... Used to get asked " My central heating's not working.. What's wrong with it?.. Just like you just got to be psychic then it's easy.. Good vid.. keep them coming..👍

When i was alumni in college, was brain-hammered with this: an engineer is some guy who solves problems with pennies, when everybody else solves it with thousands of dollars. No bloody-hand day is a good mechanics day. Regards.
Late 80s, I was in the Air Force in San Antonio, TX. Had my beautiful jade green 1978 F150. Helped a friend move to Houston. Was driving back to SA. Heard a boom. Revs going up, speed going down. Pulled over, put it in park, truck started to roll. 3rd member rings hand grenaded. Must mention the auto hobby shops on base and junk yards in TX are spectacular. Plus my friend Dwight who volunteered to ride in the truck while we towed in back with my 72 LTD. That car I restored so beautifully that it was stolen when we returned to PA on the Carnegie Mellon University campus where my ex wife worked and was a student. There is my comment where I actually did it.
Great way to spend a Thursday evening. My dad was a mechanic, told me the same thing when I was in school. I’m an accountant, run into stupid stuff as well, less the rust. Looking forward to wrenching on the old Chevy Thunder this weekend. If I can’t get it done, another road trip to Avoca!!!
Yeah, thought my moms cars diff was taking a dump, jacked up the back wheel's and the neighbor's cat screamed out of there, she somehow got stuck between the driveshaft and the floor pan. The cat was ok just a butch hair cut on it's back.
I'd say a lack of regular service. No one was checking the diff fluid level or condition of the fluid which would've caused particulates to accumulate and grind on bearing & gears
I hate torches. Needed a discontinued piece for a Mercedes. Found it easy enough. They did not tell me they had to torch it out. Ended up I had to drop the whole rear sub frame to change the part. Good part is while I was loving the sub frame and the part supplier a friend brought me a new set of coil springs he had bought and never used. That car ran so smooth after that it was sick. Great videos.
Always get "Recyclers" to send you photos that way you can address problems before they ship it. Got a gas tank sent from the East Coast and had to pay $100 for shipping and when I received it there was a nice big dent in the top of it. They said the shipping company did it but the packaging was fine. Luckily it didn't leak when I tested it before installing. Lesson learned.

WOWWW... "Shake and break tool" I have never seen in all my 28 years of buying tools.. Surprised its even legal with being able to put a cheap china chrome socket on there and make shrapnel all over the place.. But I still need and want one, looking it up as im writing this!! What we do at work, is cut two of the studs out and release the three bolts from the backing plate. You stick a long 10 mm bolt through the stud hole and put a nut on the inside of the flange. You then take it piece of thick metal and put it against the steering knuckle as you tighten the bolt you will pull the bearing hub away from the steering knuckle. you might have to change two studs after you are done, but it is a lot quicker and less painless.
Well of course the .401 air hammer couldn't do it, it's not even a red or green model, that's where the power comes from. Just wait for the mood ring model!

I enjoy your videos more than most others but have a question. Why be that when reassembling undercarriage components like brakes in the rust belt, you rarely use high temp anti-seize for the next guy?

I've had a few major oil leaks on our cars, two of which were valve cover gaskets and one was a rear main seal that had let go.

You have to reprogram those RDUs when replaced with the axle code tag on the side or else it could prematurely wear or wipe out the new unit

Funny! But most American engineers seem to do the exact opposite: There's nothing they can't make expensive and over-complicated to make or repair.

Late 80s, I was in the Air Force in San Antonio, TX. Had my beautiful jade green 1978 F150. Helped a friend move to Houston. Was driving back to SA. Heard a boom. Revs going up, speed going down. Pulled over, put it in park, truck started to roll. 3rd member rings hand grenaded. Must mention the auto hobby shops on base and junk yards in TX are spectacular. Plus my friend Dwight who volunteered to ride in the truck while we towed in back with my 72 LTD. That car I restored so beautifully that it was stolen when we returned to PA on the Carnegie Mellon University campus where my ex wife worked and was a student. There is my comment where I actually did it.

Yeah, thought my moms cars diff was taking a dump, jacked up the back wheel's and the neighbor's cat screamed out of there, she somehow got stuck between the driveshaft and the floor pan. The cat was ok just a butch hair cut on it's back.

I'd say a lack of regular service. No one was checking the diff fluid level or condition of the fluid which would've caused particulates to accumulate and grind on bearing & gears
I hate torches. Needed a discontinued piece for a Mercedes. Found it easy enough. They did not tell me they had to torch it out. Ended up I had to drop the whole rear sub frame to change the part. Good part is while I was loving the sub frame and the part supplier a friend brought me a new set of coil springs he had bought and never used. That car ran so smooth after that it was sick.

Always get "Recyclers" to send you photos that way you can address problems before they ship it. Got a gas tank sent from the East Coast and had to pay $100 for shipping and when I received it there was a nice big dent in the top of it. They said the shipping company did it but the packaging was fine. Luckily it didn't leak when I tested it before installing. Lesson learned.

WOWWW... "Shake and break tool" I have never seen in all my 28 years of buying tools.. Surprised its even legal with being able to put a cheap china chrome socket on there and make shrapnel all over the place.. But I still need and want one, looking it up as im writing this!! I miss the music that used to play for Big Nasty.
What we do at work, is cut two of the studs out and release the three bolts from the backing plate. You stick a long 10 mm bolt through the stud hole and put a nut on the inside of the flange. You then take it piece of thick metal and put it against the steering knuckle as you tighten the bolt you will pull the bearing hub away from the steering knuckle. you might have to change two studs after you are done, but it is a lot quicker and less painless.
Well of course the .401 air hammer couldn't do it, it's not even a red or green model, that's where the power comes from. Just wait for the mood ring model!
