      I agree I absolutely loath going to the dealer but it might be worth it for this if you can get the work completed for free on recall. Getting some custom built is going to be quite expensive and probably won’t work as well as the factory replacements.

    Had same issue in 2017. It was scary when you would break at high speeds. Took it to my local ford dealership and they told me it was the “aftermarket rotors and brakes”. I knew it was bull crap. Took it to another place and they told me it was the calipers failing. I knew that was true either. 8 months later took it to Naperville auto center and they found it was the rear toe going bad. Paid $300 for job and alignment. But glad you where able to share this with us!!

    Brother, this is one of the best tech videos so far. A week ago , i experienced issue like this with my Ford Explorer 2016 2.3 ecoboost limited. I was on a smooth road in the city and after the traffic stop, i was accelerating while I heard a bang sound from the right of my car. Then I felt like I was driving when the parts of the right wheels were broken. I stopped to check if there were anything wrong, but noticed nothing weird. I continued slowly and it happened again after a short while. This time seemed harder so i pulled over and turned off the engine. Without noticing anything weird, i continued driving slowly and it just ran normally. The day after I had it inspected by a non-Ford mechanic. They did a test drive and inspect the bottom parts, but said everything is great. Still concerned while driving. I didn't go to Ford cuz i bought mine used from someone who imported it from the US himself not from the local dealership. Any recommendations?

    Many thanks for posting this. The recall in the Great White North was June 2019. I never got a notification for my 2012 Taurus SEL (it is covered here). Back end has been jumping all over the place every time I hit a bump. Replacement now booked for early June.
    Update 11 June '20: The replacement parts they had in stock had hairline cracks. Ford has now recalled ALL of the parts supplied to deal with the original recall. This is North America Wide. They are waiting for delivery of new versions of the part.

    I just had my 2013 Explorer SLT recall completed (19S17). The new ones look NICE!! I have pics of the new ones installed but not sure how to post it. Bottom line is they look exactly like the ones in the video - no weld, all one piece at that end. Glad to have that done!!
    The dealer did try to up-sell a front end alignment (barely off), replacing the Rear Upper Control Arm Bushings ("Excessive Play"), and doing a rear brake job at $240, but I declined since I knew I could do the brake job for $50 and check the Upper Control Arms at that time. No play at all when testing per the video... Grrrr. Is it any wonder I don't trust dealerships?
    BTW, thank you for the video!! It gave me the needed knowledge to make sure I did not get ripped off.

    • @Movieman1965
      @Movieman1965 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, when I saw this recall, I immediately went to look at the rear suspension toe links for cracks or breakage. I also took pictures of both sides to have for my records. I will also mark them before I take the vehicle in to compare before and AFTER the work is done!!! I didn't see any defects or breakage but metal and welds can slowly develop cracks and fatigue over time from road shocks, vibrations and loading. I set up the recall work at a dealer nearby anyway because no way I will wait for a failure to occur!!!

    • @ColtaineCrows
      @ColtaineCrows 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If we have to we do it at our shop, but it does take very special circumstances for us to do so. That is on the actual chassi and whatnot, extra lights etc we put on all the time. Anyway, we very rarely accept non original parts because they're usually garbage, but in a pinch like last year when the main parts house was basically shut down for 5 months and now during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic shutting down parts manufacturers we're being a bit more lenient. Luckily we had enough stock to pull through the worst of it.

    Toe link on left rear wheel at 53 mph on I-95 in the Bronx, NY. Luckily for me there were no other cars around me. I was driving a Lincoln MKT. The car made an abrupt left turn send. The car into the Jersey barrier on the median, it turn around and went across my side of the highway. This happened on February 19, 2020. Boy does that seat belt pull you in. When the car finally stopped I took off the seat belt and opened the door. Many people stopped by but only one got out and asked me if I was all right . My response “was the car on fire”. He said no and I said then I’ll sit right here. The police, ambulance and fire truck responded to the scene and I was taken to the hospital. The car was totaled.

Thought I could cheap route it and replaced the sway bar bushings along with the sway bar end links. To no avail it still wobbles. So I replaced the rear upper control arms as I noticed the bushings in/on the arms looked shot. The rubber was chipped away and I thought aha this could be the problem. Again it didn’t solve my back end from kicking out. I think these toe links look to be the culprit of my issue. I’ll jack up from the lower control arm like you had in the video to see if I can feel any play. Thanks for the pro tips!

      I'm thinking that this is an in house part, and as for the failure rate, it has more to do with the condition of our roads in this country than bad engineering. The random potholes, especially on the interstates is of epidemic proportions. Cruising at 70mph, and hitting some of these monsters it's easy to see why parts can't withstand it.

      Mark K my Toyota hasn’t fallen apart and it drives the same roads. As stated above, Ford sets the specs for the suppliers, if they want better they pay more if they want to increase profits they spec out crappy welded parts instead of the obviously better second part. Just the usual, which choice do you think they went with?

      Yes I had to use a breaker bar to loosen the bolt before using an impact with the long extension.

      They should all be replaced but only certain models are under recall. You can check your car here- owner.ford.com/tools/account/maintenance/recalls.html

    👍🏼 Question, and thank you in advance. On a 2003 Ford explorer do i need to add friction modifier on both front and back differentials.

    • @markk3652
      @markk3652 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rear only, but that's if you have the limited slip rear diff. You know how to check to be sure? Lift rear with both wheels off ground, transmission in neutral, rotate one wheel while watching opposite side. If it rotates opposite, its an open diff, no modifier needed. If it rotates the same direction, put the motorcraft modifier in with full synthetic 75w140 like the F150 9.75 rear diff. Service every 60,000 to 80,000 to keep it happy.

    Is this more common in the rust belt, or is it an issue with the toe link in general?

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When they are talking weld fracturing it would be the weld quality not rust.

      I had a 72 Torino Country Squire wagon, nice car rode nice until the rubber bushings in the rear suspension wore out. Step on the gas turn left a little bit, hit the brakes turn right a bit. And it cost a small fortune to repair because of the number of links in that suspension. Simplicity was not on anyone's mind when they designed that one! ! !

    Sadly 2009 flex is not in the recall...i noticed that when it was icy or snowy out the back end will feel floaty. Found that exact weld cracked and that sideways ball joint worn. Replaced them and it rides like a dream.

    Question, 2007 ford escape v6 I put in a new subframe rotors, pads, shocks,lower control arms, truck is sturdy, but when braking forward, slight jurking, O.i had a broken spring passenger side when the subframe rotted out, could this be a bad control bushing or bad shock tower, GLEN. Thanks for your chanel, it is one of the best..

    I have a 2010 ford taurus limited that was wearing tires on the inside of rear. The mechanics didn't catch this during state inspection either. After three sets of tires, three alignments, and two wheel bearings, and two rear shocks, finally two techs at Peppy's found the issue.

    I've had 3 Ford Taurus Police Interceptors in the past 5 or 6 years and Ford sent the recall notices to me on all of them so they were replaced at the dealership but I was always considering finding a small rack and pinion from a front wheel drive car and mounting it in there so I could have that crab walk and opposing rear steer if I ever wanted to. But I never determined the steering angle that was it was possible at possible at those rear spindles...
    Another annoying things that fail on these cars are the PTO units if you don't change the fluid (and Ford won't let you change the fluid under warranty unless they're really hungry and bored) the windshield washer sprayer pump fails prematurely, the blenddoor in the dashboard and last but not least.....oil leaks around the two sensors on the front of both valve covers on the passenger side of the engine.
    Not to mention if you have a 3.5 twin Turbo ecoboost boost or the 2.0 single Turbo ecoboost you're gonna have upper valve train carbon deposits and lower intercooler fractures/cracks and fluid build-up if you don't install a catch can that doesn't come with the car and is not 50 state legal so good luck putting a catch can on a California model.

    2016 Explorer, replaced original left toe link at 90k. Have been back twice since for same repair with less than 500 miles on each subsequent repair. Toe link sheared hanging down from truck... No heavy use or off road use. Wife will not drive it anymore, ford keeps replacing it saying "it's fine now". Could this stress be caused by another part failure placing undue stress on the toe link?
