I studied in a private school in the Philippines from kindergarten to high school. We were "forced" to speak English by paying a 10-cent penalty per dialect word we spoke if got caught. It felt so awkward speaking English inside the campus if we were just taking our snacks or lunch break. So sometimes I and my classmates had to agree to break the rule.

We used to have a monitor who would try to catch us speaking Tagalog. Everytime he tried to catch me doing it, I would ask him to repeat what I said (which he did-tanga!) so we’d both end up paying instead. hahahahaha!
Btw, we used to say “spokening dalars” then as well.

@@lnc8186 It was in the 80’s. I don’t know now. It depends also on the school standards. From different nations ang mga kaibigan ko. When we meet and hang out, I do notice that some of my Filipino friends intentionally speak their own mother tongue even though they know that there are non-Filipinos in our group. Their reason is simply that, they say, they struggle to speak in English. They can, but they say later on na “nosebleed” na raw, so they end up switching to Bisaya or Tagalog.

When I was in 2nd grade, the teachers would make us pay 5 pesos per tagalog word. That was about 10 years ago. It's kinda stupid since when I grew older, it was hard for me to speak in more fluent tagalog. But I can still speak a basic tagalog.

Fun fact: The Philipines doesn’t have 2 languages and 172 dialects, but all 174 of them are technically languages since a dialect is basically just the main language but with and twist and a language is completely different so technically not one Filipino “Dialect” is considered as a dialect instead all of them are technically languages

I miss watching your videos Tom! I hope you’ll come back and make more new vlogs soon! You are one of the best foreigners who actually appreciates the Philippines and always put a positive note on everything about us. Unlike the other foreign bloggers like Making It Happen, who are always fake and they pretend to “like” or “appreciate” our culture, but they really don’t at all. It’s so obvious they are always thirsty for our views and likes, yet they don’t actually care about us or our culture.
But with you Tom, I’ve gotta say that you truly appreciate us Pinoys, you appreciate our language and how many dialects that we speak and you actually CARE about us. For that, I truly appreciate you for all the work that you’ve done. Bravo!!!🎉👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
