I think it is good to knit for ourselves as well as knitting for others. I've been thinking, we should change "selfish" knitting to "self care" knitting.

You are a superknitter getting a whole dress done so fast!! I end up knitting like crazy every Christmas but never a dress lol
I really like the sound of your Christmas, I like the leisurely vibe, too, lots of time for knitting and reading and puzzling or whatever... We also have Christmas on Christmas Eve in Switzerland, but now my family is grown up, it's just me and my husband with our dog and we have continued his family's tradition of a quiet evening with sparkling wine and "Schinkengipfeli", which are bacon-filled mini-croissants that are typically Swiss and very good. A lot of Swiss people eat cheese or meat fondue or have some other special meal with Christmas flair, maybe things in star shapes or more expensive meat cuts. As I am originally British, we have most of our family over on Christmas Day (my mom, brother-in-law, two of my daughters plus partners, grandchildren) for a big turkey dinner, English-style, that my husband enjoys making. It has a sage, onion, chestnut and apple mincemeat filling (stuffing), and we have adopted cranberry-orange relish, which is maybe more of an American thing, plus roast potatoes, parsnips and carrots, it's so tasty! As we don't enjoy Brussels sprouts, we leave those out ;). My son-in-law is making a delicious Christmas cake as dessert, which is a very fruit-heavy mature sort of cake. Now that my eldest daughter's family are older, they host a wider family Christmas on the 26th so we get to meet some of her in-laws and family, too, and she just serves simple little cheese pies and "Schinkengipfeli" as well as coffee and cake. I wish we had the rice-pudding tradition, I love it; my English grandmother used to make it quite a lot. Maybe I will adopt it in some way!!
Anyway, after all that, we will need some quiet days with turkey sandwiches to recover...
I'm looking forward to seeing your porcelain sweater - one day I'd like to make it but have other plans first.
    Merry Christmas, Oline!

What about lutefisk? Oh, I did hear you say lutefisk. I grew up having meatballs and lutefisk, Herling, mashed potatoes, and many other dishes. When I was growing up, we could only buy some Norwegian foods during Christmas. Oh, do you have jello in Norway. We always had some variety of jello. It may have had vegetables in the jello or fruit. We also only had apples and oranges at Christmas time because we lived so far north in Minnesota. Shipping fresh fruit to rural areas was not easy. The 7 kinds of cookies plus fudge and a variety of homemade candiies as well as candies purchased. I’m 75, so grew up in the 50’s and 60’s. My grand parents and great grandparents immigrated from Norway in 1850’s - 1869. Also a set of Great, Great Grandparents from Sweden. I enjoy following your knitting journey. My grandmother started me knitting at about 5 years old. There were a lot of gap years. I have projects on my needles all of the time now. Merry Christmas! 🎄🎄🎄

My grandma grew up with Lutefisk for Christmas! I'm not used to jello for Christmas, but my grandma makes Aspic/Kabaret, but that's more of a summer thing. How cool that your grandparents and great grand parents came from Norway! My grandma started me knitting when I was 5, too! Merry Christmas🎄🎅

You are incredible and determined i must say, stunning Christmas dress, your sweater is also very classy.
Christmas tradition for us was December 24th, we went to Children Mass, while the parents put up the tree, with real candles, Shocking I know, never burned down the house, lol, the ornaments were purple hand-blown glass post WW2 and real tensile, that got ironed and put away in a newspaper after the tree came down, holy 3 kings January 6th. while eating a small dinner usually hot wieners and potato salad, we would hear the silver bell ring, which meant the Christkind came( Nikolaus came December the 6th and brought candy ,nuts, apples, oranges , if you were a good girl, ) we all went to the living room to be amazed at the tree and the gifts, and then my parents would pray the Christmas prayer, and then we opened up our gifts, no ripping the paper, that was collected and reused the following year, my parents then went to midnight mass, while us kids went to bed, December 25th and 26th are to this day still Christmas holiday for when families like aunts and uncles come for dinner or coffee, this year I am keeping an empty chair at my table so my mom who is in heaven now has a place to sit with us, Merry Christmas everyone,

    • @norwegianknitter

Thank you! Your Christmas sounds magical! I'm also used to putting the tree up quite "late" as people would say now, and leaving it up until January, but we take it down the 13th of January! I've also grown up carefully packing up presents to reuse the paper for next year! I'm sorry to hear about your mother❤️

Love your dress! Over here in the US, our immediate family gets together on the 24 for dinner and gift exchange and then on the 25, our larger extended family with all the grands, aunts/uncles/, kids, grand kids go to my niece's house for dinner (turkey/ham) all the trimmings and dessert. My favorite day is the day after Christmas because it is a pajama day! I love the quiet between Christmas ad New Years. It feels like the whole world slows down. I hope you get lots of rest this coming week! Happy holidays to you and your family.

your dress looks amazing! i have been wanting to knit an augustins pattern since i started knitting but would rather improve my skills for right now. growing up, my favorite christmas tradition was picking out a few presents from home to take to grandma’s, and having dinner and dessert with extended family and opening presents with them. i was a shy kid so i might not have fully enjoyed it then but i look back on those memories fondly. my grandma passed in 2012 but i still have a few of her “ugly” christmas sweaters 🤍

thank you for sharing all the traditions you and your family celebrate! when i was a kid, we lived in germany and i very much remember getting marzipan pigs during the holidays - i looked it up online to understand the meaning - interesting, and such a charming metaphor. also interesting to learn that your people go to church on Christmas, religiously!, but are still considered secular. here in the states its also really variable as to how people celebrate, though i think having a Christmas tree and presents is probably the big one. (sigh). i like the Christmas lights - sometimes whole neighborhoods dress their houses in lights and various Christmas displays, either religious or secular - but lights being the focus. thanks for all your stories and knitting - wishing you knitting goodness and more in 2024

Hi Oline, I never doubted that you would finish that dress and it will look so beautiful on you with that red bow! But I hope that after Christmas you will have more time to relax and sleep without worrying about a firm deadline for projects, and then I’m sure that your knitting motivation and joy will return. Thank you for sharing your family’s Christmas traditions. For many years now all of the adults in my family have put their names into a name drawing, and we each draw a name and then buy a gift for that person only. We also set a money limit as to how much we will spend for each gift. We get together on Christmas Eve and exchange gifts (we do still get gifts for all the children in the family). We eat different foods from year to year but my own tradition is to bake pumpkin spice cookies with a maple frosting, and everyone loves them. I baked about 5 dozen today! Have a wonderful Christmas with your family, Oline, and as always I will look forward to your next podcast.

Merry Christmas! Actually I think most non Anglo-Saxon/english speaking start Christmas on the evening/night of the 24th. At least in Europe.
What's the deal/tradition with elves and trolls and moose 🫎 though? And who brings the presents in your family? Santa/father Christmas or the christ-child, or.... would love to hear more about it. Lots of love and Christmas blessings from Germany!

Merry Christmas!! Ahh, thanks for letting me know! I don't know of trolls/elves and moose directly having anything to do with Christmas in Norway. But Trolls/Elves are a pretty big part of old school superstition/fairytales here. I've never heard of moose having anything to do with Christmas, but it's easier to spot them out and about in wintertime, at least where I live! In my family we have Santa bring some presents and hand them over to the kids. Hope you have a lovely Christmas!!
