I can't help but thinking that the group of young Christians who kept praying in front of Notre Dame during the fire is what saved the heart of the Cathedral. God bless them.
Loved this! At first I was saddened and my heart hurt. Then as I learned more about this building I knew that God already has a plan in store. 🙏🏽💙 I’m thankful that nobody was killed and that we are reminded of the love of God in all that we do. 💙
Thank you, Bishop Barron. You helped ease some of the grief I felt seeing the Cathedral spire crumbling. Though I never saw it, I feel as if it lives in you and other wonderful knowledgeable people. Thank you again.
Thank you Bishop Barron for letting know it is not as bad as we feared. And huge thanks for the historical picture and for sharing your own experiences of and associations with the Cathedral.
Yes my experience of this beautiful Cathedral was something that I will never forget. I arrived on Palm Sunday and was allowed into the Cathedral. I will never forget the spirituality and acoustics of this church. I think the term spiritually charged is an understatement. This visit has stayed with me my entire life. It was gutted to see this inspiring building burning.
I heard the terrible news on my way out from the noon mass at St. Paul the Apostle church in NYC. By an odd coincidence, during mass, I had reflected on what Bishop Barron had taught us in the Catholicism series about the Rose Window at Notre Dame--that at the very center, at the very heart of the window, is our Lord, Jesus Christ. This reflection had led me to thank the Good Lord for Bishop Barron and how blessed I am that I live in this time in human history when I can be the recipient of this great teacher who serves as a guiding light on my journey of faith. Thank you, Bishop Barron.
Thank you for this beautiful and uplifting information by Bishop Robert of the significenceficence of Notre Dame to someone who has never seen it or even understood its importance What I was touched and comforted by by was the sight of the smallish but gleaming gold Cross that stood out within all the chaos and darkness.
Hi Bishop Barron. Looking at the flames that endowed parts of Notre Dame, I felt so helpless. So sad. Yet the Holy Cross stood proud on the High Altar. A sign to me that fire cannot destroy the great gift of faith that we all have, which will carry us through tragedies or disasters and, ultimately, our own death. I enjoyed watching the interesting interview.
Thank you for mentioning the young people praying the Hail Mary that is what caused the tears to flow I was sad that people spoke of the Cathedral as a 'Monument' etc and nothing was being said about Mary ' Mother'..Bishop Barron I couldn't stop thinking of you so much while it burnt and Thank God the next morning I was able to thank God
Thank you for your thoughts. I was in tears watching this happen. March 14, this year, I spent several hours inside Notre Dame Cathedral with my husband. It was very quiet, not many tourist and so we just spent as much time as we wanted, walking, praying, photographing. My heart is very sad.
Bar none, this is the most inspiring and visual statement on the tragedy of Notre-Dame that I have heard. From a man that lived in the beauty of it's transept and the rose window. I now deeply regret not experiencing it as it was. Not to mention wanting to now read Thomas Aquinas.
Thank you your grace, I'm not a catholic, anglican actually, but you always strike the right note. After the fire, a note I really needed. God bless you both.

But the rescued relics having been retrieved and described and presented was beautiful particularly the gold and silver crown of thorns. I hope to visit when it is rebuilt. Bishop Barron, you are one of my spiritual fathers & God bless you! I am sad today looking forward to Holy Thursday & Good Friday as we remember how our Lord gave himself, & now we see Notre Dame burn. You know I believe that God has done this because of how we have handled this recent unfolding of this crises of abuse in the church... truly we have entered the beginning of the Apocalypse. Let us not lose heart because the Lord promises to restore us. However we should fear greatly. Lord have mercy; Christ have mercy.
I've never been there, but I've always felt a connection to the Notre Dame Cathedral. I chose St. Jean d'Arc as my Patron Saint when I became Catholic, because I'd always been fascinated by her, even before I'd become Catholic. I'm not sure what it was about all of this.....about watching this happen, and hearing about the events surrounding this. I felt sick all day after I heard about it, and the next day I just lost it emotionally. I'm still feeling very sad today.

What a great episode to have as my first introduction to this "Word on Fire" series. I had lost touch with Bishop Barron since his Father Barron days and the episodes that he would e-mail out to all who were interested. This is a step up in terms of technical advance, I suppose. His reaction to the fire in Paris was especially interesting given his history with Notre Dame Cathedral and the historical bonus details were fascinating as well!
Bishop Barron, as you were speaking about the enormous spiritual and cultural significance of Notre Dame Cathedral to European civilization in general and French civilization in particular, I kept thinking of Hillaire Belloc's remark from about 100 years ago, "Europe is the faith. The faith is Europe." Yet, as we know, today the Catholic faith in Europe seems tragically moribund, if not perilously close to extinction. Let us hope that the rebuilding of the Cathedral might lead to a rebuilding of the faith in Europe!
His Crown survived fire. The Rose windows and organ and choir loft survived. The Relics survived. How much more proof do you need. Faith, simple Faith.
Tax day. Notre Dame. Bad day. Bishop Barron made reference to the French rediscovering the great faith tradition behind Notre Dame. From his lips to God's ear. As I watched the coverage yesterday, along my day's path, Joni Mitchell singing Big Yellow Taxi came to mind at one point. "Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got till it's gone..." A lot has gone in the life of Europe's Church, we hear in the states. Perhaps this material moment, jarring and saddening, come to place attention on the gapng hole in the soul of the West. God does, after all, famously work in mysterious ways. May the French rediscover what has largely "gone" in the way of the faith, and rebuild it as they rebuild Our Lady's house. In Atlanta, the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception which is about 150 years old had an upgrade to their pipe organ in the 80s which started a massive fire after a electrical short circuit. The church was totally gutted, but they rebuild it, and it is a thriving parish.
Bishop Baron won’t it be wonderful one day to meet Thomas Aquinas? Bach Handel? And all other Christians? One day we’ll all be reunited in heaven. God Bless ps Notre Dame has special meaning for me for I visited it once again during my confirmation time converting from Protestantism. I ate lamb at Angelina on Good Friday and was thinking here I’m eating lamb on the very day the Lamb of God gave his life for us. Truly unforgettable! Love the way you call the rose window the foretaste of heaven so beautiful! 💕🌹🌹
It’s so disheartening that this great, spiritual, historical monument has been damaged so terribly. I have not yet visited Paris, but it’s in the top 2 places I plan to visit, I wish I had got there sooner.

Sadly, this comment was made by the Architecture Historian, Patriolo del Real, from Harvard University to Rolling Stone Magazine: “THE BUILDING WAS SO OVERBURDENED WITH MEANING THAT ITS BURNING WAS AN ACT OF LIBERATION.” I disagree with this so-called architecture historian from a “prestigious” university. Does he not possess an appreciation and respect for the centuries of history in the beautiful cathedral? Yes, some are wanting the cathedral to break away from its Gothic architecture and have it reflect the French people of today-whatever that means. If it does that, it will lose the purpose of the Gothic architecture. Instead, it will reflect a country that has fallen away from Church teachings and has become an ultra-secularized nation.
Swan Lake Harvard is a hot bed of liberalism, the over privileged, and kids who’s parents made donations or some corrupt means to get them in. Why do we bother looking to the Ivy League anymore? Maybe 50 years ago I would look up to these places with great admiration but now a days the fruit they produce is simply rotten. Forget them!
hi Bishop Barron! I just submitted your review of No Country For Old Men to reddit (because it was so terrific of course), and the first comment I got was, you should review Sicario. I thought this was an excellent idea, if you can manage it! Also a very grim, violent, serious movie that might test your mettle in terms of finding the light, the upside, the interesting bits.
I have felt that way after taking in some churches as well...disappointed I missed Notre Dame and so lucky to see Chartres when I had no idea it existed, never heard of it. Chatres knocks your socks off. Prayers going up for "Our Lady" of Paris.
In response to their grief about Notre Dame, as the world was looking for how to donate to restore it, they discovered the gofundme for the three historically black churches that were recently burned by arson here in the US. In just 24 hours, the funds those churches needed were raised!
Whether damaged or rebuilt, I am still asking myself: "What does this monumental symbol of Western civilization stand for?" Over visiting it several times, I went away with different answers each time. I have been struck by how all of this geometry came together and magnified 'light' and 'sound.' I was awed by how science and spirituality can work together in the geometry of this structure. Yes Science -- because the word is borrowed from the Latin scio, the first person tense of the verb meaning -- I know -- that knowing and spirituality can and do work together -- "Ignorance Stand Aside." I am here to journey and discover revelation! I gasp at how it took three generations of the same family alone, over one hundred years to create the three beautiful arches that face below, the front of the two towers as you are approaching the building; sons apprenticing with their fathers applying the secrets and skills of stonework from about 1260 to 1360. How many families did it take where sons apprenticed with their fathers, passing down their knowledge, to create this wonderful representation of something great? I don't know and I don't think anyone has explained it well either. It came to me eventually that what this structure for me really represented, really symbolized, in the greater sense, is the most beautiful, magnificent cathedral of all called the ‘universe,' created through the imagination of the Divine Almighty ITSELF. Is this what the builders with their trade secrets had in mind? Perhaps we have turned a page, crossed a line; doesn't matter, no need for grieving--because we are still here living and breathing within the most beautiful, most magnificent-cathedral of all!
O the eternity of heaven and the beauty of God evoked in tinted glass. Notre Dame de Paris isn't only a relic or icon, it is the symbol of who we are as a people who relish the fiat of Mary, mother of Jesus.
You have made no mention of that magnificent organ; just towers and windows. That organ was fabulously important and its Organiste Titulaire (one of them) Olivier Latry is now without a home.
Jesus spoke to me. He laughed. And asked me if I had found my faith. I said I 'd never lost it. I have only been angry. I never lost my faith. I have only been angry at the hippocrites whom declare themselves Christians and, yet, be nasty. They are horrible types. Christ is my Saviour. I love Him. And His teachings. Those of you without sin cast thy first stone.
Hi Guys - this is a fantastic talk. Thank you so much for it! Brandon - any chance we can change the format and eliminate the sound bumpers? They feel so artificial. Brandon, I'm sure Bp. Barron appreciates you promoting him to the honorific of Cardinal when you introduced him as His Eminence instead of His Excellency at the very beginning of the episode. :-)
Leafspring that modernist altar is only according to your interpretation. Jesus presence in the Holy Eucharist transcends any material things. The Holy Mass can be celebrated in an ordinary table as long as the Priest celebrant is in Full Communion with Rome otherwise even a Latin Mass celebrated on a beautiful altar loses its sacredness if celebrated by a Disobedient Priest to the Pope, how? Read the Canon of the Mass.
Leafsprig why the hatred for the 'table altar' it is always good if you have nothing fundamental and developmental to keep silent than spread............serious propaganda.
@S B If somebody burned down all the churches, that would tell me who lives in them because people of that mindset see the church as attacking God when its just a meeting place.
@S B I don't know that it compares to Solomon's Temple but God allowed that one to be torn down to. Great architecture is a tribute to what God will allow the human to achieve but in the end, everything in this world will be destroyed and built anew. I understand the horror of seeing such a beautiful building being destroyed in addition to the history it represents but realistically, everything will be gone one day.

I read that the cathedral is owned by the French government. I find that a bit ominous. Considering the trajectory of European politics & culture I don't think anyone would be surprised if the refurbishment includes prayer rugs and a minaret with a crescent moon in place of a steeple with a cross.

Never true. Our souls are immoral. Nothing material is. So I'm not very surprised, at all. Though it was sad seeing great Church and historical place slowly burned down. Not quite, meaning it is about faith that gradually fading or almost fading from the minds of men. Time to build both the material and spiritual aspect of our immortal life.

In Atlanta, the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception which is about 150 years old had an upgrade to their pipe organ in the 80s which started a massive fire after a electrical short circuit. The church was totally gutted, but they rebuild it, and it is a thriving parish.
Magnificent artwork is what touched me most I could lmagine the beuty of God expressed in his creation
ingrid You ate LAMB, as in meat, on Good Friday? 😳
Thank You Bishop for this video. God will always protect His church. I still wasn't ready when you spoke in French, lol.
Good afternoon father❤
Hold the cross high so I may see it through the flames
Thank you for this quote. ❤ I was just thinking about those words of my Patron Saint St. Jean D' Arc 📿
Thank you. This is very helpful!
It’s so disheartening that this great, spiritual, historical monument has been damaged so terribly. I have not yet visited Paris, but it’s in the top 2 places I plan to visit, I wish I had got there sooner.
S B I don’t know if it’s the French or the anti-west immigration that has overwhelmed the country. Of course, the French allowed for this too
Being on retainer to NBC should be considered a Mortal Sin. God Bless You Bishop Robert Barron.
Why, for heaven's sake?
@@BishopBarron I'm sorry your excellency but you must see they push for the evil of abortion with their news coverage/analysis and the degradation of traditional marriage?
Therefore, what? Refuse the opportunity to bring a Catholic voice to the national conversation? Withdraw into a defensive Catholic ghetto?@@joshcruise2657
@@BishopBarron Excellent point Father.
When they rebuild I pray they do so in keeping if it’s classic beautiful gothic architecture. 🙏🏻❤️
ardice saugar what do you mean?

"Heaven in Stone and Glass". Great. Bishop Barron has surpassed my expectations.
Will get the book!
Love this show!
Whether damaged or rebuilt, I am still asking myself: "What does this monumental symbol of Western civilization stand for?" Over visiting it several times, I went away with different answers each time. I have been struck by how all of this geometry came together and magnified 'light' and 'sound.'
I was awed by how science and spirituality can work together in the geometry of this structure.
Am I the only one who thinks Brandon is inordinately happy at the beginning of this episode 😂
Yeah, I think you are...
You have made no mention of that magnificent organ; just towers and windows. That organ was fabulously important and its Organiste Titulaire (one of them) Olivier Latry is now without a home.
Sue Smith they did mention the Organ, in another program not sure.
Another famous”organiste” of Notre Dame was Jean Cocherau. He used to improvise, after playing Bach. That happened about 50 years ago. O miss ir.
I miss it.

The rose glass had so much meaning to him. There are so many awesome things to talk about but the focused on the 🌹...
Millions of dollars are flowing to Notre-Dame. She'll rise again... with love.
Is The Catedral in Montreal of Notre Dame a copy of the original in Paris? We are the church and we will re built it in our Lord Jesus Christ name.
No matter what the Norte Dame will be rebuilt.
You have a wonderful, flowing, back and forth conversation - then the bumper comes in and you both have to wait. Why not just segue with another question? Thanks so much for the content - it's marvelous!
Brandon. 13:05 You used “hey” again. Hahaha 😂
Seriously? The -windows- are the most precious things?????? As a priest I thought you of all people would have said the Blessed Sacrament was the most precious. How sad for my poor forgotten Jesus.
Carol Howard yes I was going that up too. Thank you, Father Howard? I am a practicing Tradtional Catholic, just loved Jesus, Our Lord in the Traditional Latin Mass.
Christos Anesti.
"The God of Faith and Reason". Superb.
Who were those female scholars again who had used Husserl to understand or defend the Catholic faith? 27:04
Robert Sapolowski. Is that the correct spelling?
Keep an eye out for Chartres!
Brandon, I'm sure Bp. Barron appreciates you promoting him to the honorific of Cardinal when you introduced him as His Eminence instead of His Excellency at the very beginning of the episode. :-)
😍😍💖💟
Interesting that the modernist ‘table altar’ was crushed? I would crush it too if I was the Lord.
Leafspring
that modernist altar is only according to your interpretation.
Couldn't agree more. The rest of Paris will be on fire soon. Notre Dame is a warning. Protestant tables will all be crushed soon enough.
Leafsprig why the hatred for the 'table altar' it is always good if you have nothing fundamental and developmental to keep silent than spread............serious propaganda.
That is why you're not the Lord.
AdOre GOD Alone and WorthShip Every GOoD
God doesn't live in churches. He lives in us.
Nothing is impossible for God.
If Jesus was faced between choosing a Cathedral anywhere in the world and a child dying of thirst/hunger, I know which one He would choose!!!!
Very sad....God! have mercy on us.
I thought the Eucharist was the most precious think in the Cathedral?
I assume that's just a given.
* Sincronicidade ?
Why does Brandon have books flying in the background?
With all due respect, why no discussion on the many attacks on French Catholic Churches leading up to this fire at Notre Dame.
Est-ce sainte Thérèse de Lisieux ou d'Avila en arrière plan ? Is it saint Theresa of Lisieux or Avila at the back?
Who is that picture of behind the lamp?
I read that the cathedral is owned by the French government. I find that a bit ominous. Considering the trajectory of European politics & culture I don't think anyone would be surprised if the refurbishment includes prayer rugs and a minaret with a crescent moon in place of a steeple with a cross.
Which one did he say is the finest gothic cathedral in his opinion? I think he said Shard or Sharp? Can anyone point me in the right direction i would like to see pictures. Thank you Bishop for this wonderful Video
Alonso Gonzalez Chartes Cathedral
Julie Marquez thank you
Shard
Chartres
The Vatican || altar totally crumbles yet the Traditional Altar still stands firm. Chastisement of the end times.Vatican Rome this kind of Chatisement not unlikely .After all the Authentic Roman Catholic Church and the True Faith is already ABSENT there.
1163. Art is supposed to be forever.
I will be dust in a hundred years.
Unless you become a Saint and end up incorruptible like Saint Padre Pio or Saint Bernadette. Let's hope we all become Saints
His excellency...not a cardinal yet... but his eminence soon we hope
Did Jesus say the kingdom of God is within us? That it grows like a mustard seed? I wonder is there a message from God from the blaze? The word is on fire, and now the church.

Love your videos. May I suggest a viewing queue alongside the music intro to get us into the mood as opposed to just seeing your faces waiting for the music to end. Also, I'd recommend framing your cams so it has a generally better layout, as opposed to a Skype call one Sunday afternoon.
Bishop Barron ,how do I get a copy of "Heaven in Stone and Glass'? I checked on Amazon and its not available here in India ? It will be an honour to receive a (signed ) copy . can you get someone to advise how to remit the cost
