Fateh Singh of Udaipur and Mewar was the only Maharaja to not attend the Delhi Durbar, both of 1903 and 1911. Then in 1921, when Edward, Prince of Wales, son of King George V and Queen Mary, visited Udaipur, he refused to receive him, citing illness and instead sent his son. This left him at odds with the British, thereafter, under the garb of ignoring a social unrest in Mewar, on 28 July 1921, his powers were curtailed and he was formally deposed, he was however allowed to retain his title, the effective power was handed to his son and heir, Bhupal Singh

Indeed, but the appropriate title is "Maharana" not "Maharaja". One more fact, rulers of Udaipur-Mewar never attended Mughal Durbar too.

@Adita Saha [X-C] it was Maharana from the day one, which was conferred by the people of Udaipur-Mewar upon their ruler. Britishers would usually address local rulers as Prince or Chief. You many find it in various books of that time.

A very clear picturization of that time indeed.
It will ever astonish me that England being such small nation compared to India was so supremely guileful to exploit the vulnerabilities of Indian rulers thus ruling India for such a long time. Stripping the nation of it's resources, wealth, and grandeur. This event is a testament to that.
Though looking back at all this history, it only seems like a chapter of misfortune for an unstoppable and emerging nation i.e. India.

HH Rajmata Shri Gayatri Devi Sahiba of Jaipur, maternal granddaughter of HH Shrimant Maharaja Sir Sayajirao III Gaekwad Sahib of Baroda (one of the Premier Princes) had described the reason behind the incident that happened during Delhi Durbar of 1911 in her autobiography "A Princess Remembers: The Memoirs of the Maharani of Jaipur".

Actually, Kings and Queens do give each other knighthoods to this day. As knighthood in the West is associated with the positive values of chivalry (virtue, honesty, service), I wouldn't say it was a minor gift (at least in the eyes of the British at that time). In fact, some Orders have even more prestige than titles and riches, and therefore are still coveted as marks of distinction and means of social mobility among the higher clases.
