  • Nicolas Henry travels around India to capture the history and the legends of this fascinating country. This time, he’s in Bhinai, a village at the foot of the Aravalli Mountains. He meets the Royal Family. Jahnvi is the grandmother of the family, and explains the curse that exists on her family: because of the divinity Sati, all men die between 45 and 50 years old since 5 generations. But the malediction is now broken, and her son and grandson are safe. Nicolas Henry will photograph this family considering their history, traditions and beliefs.
Extract from the documentary: “Let me capture your world - The Maharajas”
    Direction: Sibylle d’Orgeval

As Tarnicles has commented below: The 'words written in Arabic' at 6.24 are actually a Hindustani/Urdu inscription (written in Perso-Arabic script). It reads : yeh mahal Ilahi Bakhsh kareegar (craftsman) ney tayyar kiaa samat (samvat) 1941 ( trans.: this palace was built by the mason Ilahi Bakhsh in the year 1884 CE).
It's so amazing that the Maharaja hired a Muslim craftsman or mason.
This mason must be one of his loyal subjects.
As the Maharani has described, his descendant Sadik is still serving the royal family.
It also looks like there was nobody there who was able to read the Urdu script.

I absolutely loved this documentary and all of the work that the photographer put into building the props, finding the right set location to take the picture, where to place each person and why, and even choosing the right lens. When he said he must place the young boy upfront not just he was small, but because he was the future of the family is brilliant. I could tell the photographer really wanted to make sure he had shown respect to the royal family and has so much dedication for his work. It was absolutely beautiful!

Kings and queens were much more loyal for their people from today’s politicians. I have heard that when the maharaja of Marwar died nearly all the Marwaris living in the country shaved their heads. This was the respect in them for their kings.

Sati was not prevalent across all societies. In my community ie Jats if elder brother die his wife was remarried to Younger brother. That's why devar bhabhi and jeeja sali relationship is flirtatious.

@@jayakrishnanrajesh7914 I know this story, her wish for sati was opposed so she cursed the family ,however she commited sati but her curse didn't go away, there is also a saying in Rajasthani that if you stop a woman from committing sati wilfully you will be cursed by Mata Sati, I am a Rajasthani and one thing I can tell for sure is Sati was never forced just few random one two cases were popularised by RRR and his Samaj and portrayed sati as something forced upon women, sati was always women choice, you will find examples of Women leading kingdoms after husband death like Rani Nainavati, Rani Roopmati who didn't choose sati, if sati was forced they would have been also forced but not and also example of Rani Padmini committing sati to save herself from Khilji, one more story is, Amar singh was killed by Shah Jahan and his dead body was not handed over to his family, then his wife demanded her brother to bring back body of Amar singh because she wanted to comit sati with his Husband body then her brother along with few men, recovered Amar singh body.

Sati is really complicated....only women who wished performed it...we have many examples of queens who didn't perform sati and led kingdoms....we also have examples of only one wife commits sati and the rest stay on or vice versa... generally sati was prevalent only in Aristocratic military families and mostly in rajasthan....
