    Was off-roading for a couple of hours went through a river crossing water got sucked into the intake on the 4Runner opened the hood and checked my intake box and I had a loose clip that was not snapped on properly and water went in. Of course the 4runner is still alive ;)

    Ronny, does a top mount intercooler cause any issues with deep water coming over the hood/bonnet? Excuse my ignorance on the topic, being from Tennessee, we don’t have these Toyotas available. All of our vehicles are front mount coolers. It seems front mounts would flush the debris through as momentum is assisting. Does the top mount trap debris and clog as it’s more gravity than momentum flow.

    Hey Ronny, I've heard this story too many times, diff (or gearbox) is hot and in contact with water will get cold thus sucking water in. It doesn't make any sense.. can you please study the phenomenon and let us know the thruth? I know it sounds right, but it can't be, when it's hot it's dilated, getting cold will get it constricting therefor PUSHING air out and not sucking anything in.. I don't know, I may be wrong but can you please study it a bit more for us?? Thank you

    • @dustyhats
      @dustyhats 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The issue is not the diff itself (which has a negligible size change) but the air inside it. That air cools down massively as the diff itself is cooled and draws more air (or water) in through the breather.

    • @danghita4386
      @danghita4386 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dustyhats Hi Dale, thanks for the explanation but I feel it's somehow the same thing, I can't grasp the physics behind.. Inside being a hot mist of air and oil which can't be dilated because it's not under pressure

    • @danghita4386
      @danghita4386 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wait, I think I understand your answer Dale, so the air getting cold will shrink but because there's water sealing the valve the pressure inside drops to the point it'll suck water! Gee.. thanks Dale :-)

    With water crossing should you follow manufacturer guideline? Mine say 600mm water limit but my air box is like 1.5m from ground and I have snorkels and diff breathers. 600mm is not that high but I am sure I can go higher. Don't know If I should risk it but.

      If you have a snorkel and diff breathers you should be fine. Keep in mind the transfer case also has a breather hose

    Letting evrything cool sounds like a good idea. Do you change all of thebfluids after a trip that involves water crossings?
    It looks like quite the adventure, but my "adventure vehicle is also my daily driver. There is no way I'd take my daily driver through deep water. I don't want the carpet, seat, interior being soaked for weeks from the water getting in. Mold, mildew, rust...no thanks.

    Ronnie, it would be a nice courtesy for American viewers to put units in imperial as well as metric. E.g. 1600km / 1000 miles

    I've always thought if you drive through deep water (not really over the front end but well over the bottom of the doors) that you should have all windows UP & the air blower on low speed to create positive pressure inside to help keep most of the water from coming in.

      Common misconception, the only way you will create positive pressure in the cabin with the blower is if you have the fresh air vent open instead of on recycle, and all windows shut-but that is risky given the height of the fresh air inlet. If you have recycle on, then it’s just moving air around within the cabin, not changing inside/outside relative pressure at all.

    • @jjsadv
      @jjsadv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ontic2354 Even on recycle at least 20% is fresh/outside.. this is so you don't deplete oxygen. Its probably an ADR

    • @ontic2354
      @ontic2354 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      JJ's Adv if it’s actually a broad ADR by design and not just poor sealing, I’d like to see it. If so I suspect it would not be too many years/decades old as most cars leaked too much air for oxygen depletion to matter-most probably still do. What you are also saying is that even if you turn fresh air off and turn on recycle, that water submersion over the fresh air in vent will allow considerable (20%) water in. I’m doubtful, and older blowers and vent systems I’ve had apart are not like this-even if they don’t seal perfectly.

    • @jjsadv
      @jjsadv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ontic2354 Fair enough.. do some Googling.. around 20% is brought in from outside in various ways. But recirct isn't 100% recirc.. The vent entries are normally in front of the windscreen, and yes, if you get that deep, water will come in.
