he wanted to channel this pain onto someone else when you experience this kind of pain, its unique, and you never feel normal and accepted into society he's a hero for keeping it away from murder, and simply used his tools to examine their reaction/feel normal by them freaking out, being scared, psychologically damaged, and sharing the same reactions he did, its soothing as well to someone outcast of normal emotions

How would you feel if several good friends of yours decided to play a prank which ended up killing off BOTH of your sisters? That is soul-crushing. To make matters worse, Josh's mental state was already barely intact, and his sisters were his main source of reinforcing it. Once they were gone, he lost his mind. You also have to appreciate the fact that he only wanted to traumatize them and didn't kill them despite his mind being borderline Joker levels of unstable. Yeah, everyone apologized many times over, but to Josh, every single apology from them wouldn't mean a thing. And to be honest, it's understandable.

But inconveniently, Jess happened to be taken by a wendigo while Josh was doing this and Mike thought that Josh killed her. As far as Sam, Chris, and Ashley knew, nobody was killed, and yeah they were pissed he toyed with them so much but they wouldn't have tied him up for the police. And then Josh wouldn't have been taken by the wendigo, and he may have lived, which wouldn't have led to Flamethrower Guy's death, meaning there was a fair chance everyone including Josh could have been fine. But everyone gets fucked up, Flame Guy dies, and Josh gets killed/wendigo'd all because Mike was in the room when Josh revealed himself. Butterfly effect Also, Mike SAW the flamethrower guy multiple times, he thought that's who took Jess. He knew that couldn't have been Josh, right? idk

Likely, that was supposed to freak them out, and Josh would go after them later. He had Chris and Ashley tied up, so there's no way they would've been able to beat him up the mountain if it came down to it.

Emily and Mike was dating during that time and Hannah had a crush on Mike. Emily didn't like that and wanted to "play a harmless prank". Everyone joined in because they were just helping a friend.
