For Chris, it could be the same thing, but I feel like Chris is being tested on his loyalty to Josh, which is why he was put into these life-or-death situations between him, Josh, and Ash.

Exactly! I've seen this technique/trope used only a few times (that I can recall), and I love it. It plays with people's expectations. Make the obvious bad guy suddenly irrefutably innocent or out of the picture, only to reveal that he actually was the bad guy after all. A 360 degree twist! :D And yeah, you definitely can't say that you "called it" if you were fooled by the fake-out twist. :P
