Exploring Al Capones Former 16.5 Million Dollar Mansion Built In 1898

  • The 45-room manor was built in the style of Italian High Renaissance. The unique interior features, such as the ornately carved wood and gilded molding, marble columns and accents, frescoed ceilings, gargoyles and the like, were crafted in Europe and shipped to the United States, where they were assembled on site. The interior was designed by renowned French interior decor experts Allard et Fils, which accounts for the distinctly French feel in some of the rooms. The home is anchored on either side by a large library and drawing-room. Between these are two wings, one containing a breakfast room and dining room and the other a billiard room and den, with a separate wing leading to a large gallery. These wings all lead to a grand staircase in the center of the house. The second floor has nine bedrooms, three dressing rooms, and seven baths. The third floor and raised basement are servant quarters. With the mansion, Trumbauer also designed the wrought-iron gates at the entrance to the estate along with a small gatehouse, a powerhouse, and an eight-car garage.

The fact is that this is actually the Elkins Estate located in Elkins Park, PA. The estate originally contains seven buildings, and this one is the Elstowe Manor. The properties were built for William L. Elkins, a railroad tycoon, and his family, and designed by Horace Trumbauer . Elstowe Manor was sold in 1932 by Elkin's grandson to the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine d'Ricci as a religious retreat. Thus, the dorm-like rooms of Gregory Hall, as noted by the key holder in this video. The retreat house was sold in 2006 due to economic challenges to the Land Conservancy of Elkins Park, PA. After years of defaulted payments to the Sisters and years of legal battles, the property was ultimately sold to Landmark Developers in August 2019. Al Capone has no relation to this manor and I believe people would find this more interesting with it's true history in your walk about.

Yeah, this place has nothing to do with Capone. What it DOES have is one of the most beautiful, sensuous, staircases ever designed. Its undulating shape, the brilliant way it is lit by skylights and windows, and it's central location are all designed to make ascending / descending the stairs an experience. Brilliant. These places could never be duplicated today and the cost of maintaining them has become prohibitive. Wages were low back then and you could maintain an army of servants to upkeep these places. Additionally, most were NOT lived in full time and a few months at various times of the year were all they were occupied. Such extravagance is long gone.

If you find a tour of John Gotti’s home you will find the same staircase. Only thing is, it was added to the house after it was built. It was a disaster trying to get it to fit. The stairs are very steep and narrow

I would be willing to bet that the process will take a while especially if it's going to be for public use. Bringing structures up to code and adhering to safety requirements can be costly AND time consuming. Sometimes renovations are done in spurts due to supply needs and/or available funding or both.

Regardless it wasn't Al Capone's home, I agree with you Alexandria Radio. He still had chosen a beautiful place to tour with some interesting history; and then generously shared it with his viewers. "I definitely enjoyed the beautiful architecture!" ❤️😉🇺🇸

I know this isn't Al Capone's mansion but it really does seem like the epitome of what a real mega mob boss's mansion would look like, big rooms everywhere.👌🏽

Capitalism is essentially organized crime anyway: the rich using their wealth to make it legal to systematically steal from the poor. So, in that sense, most of the people who owned mansions like these, may as well have been mob bosses.

I wish they made houses like these today, every house back then seemed to be like a canvas for art and rly anything and it always turned out amazing in every room, just imagine all the time spent in each and every room and how many people back then worked and how long it would of taken but in the end a stunning house hopefully it stays that beautiful

Houses like this are still built. In addition it’s a custom house so obviously it’s going to have a lot of intricate details.

    • @johnnyrocket1685

Whoever has this originally built ((has nothing to do with Al Capone)) probably paid a lot of money by their standards in those days.
You too could very easily have a house like this built…. If you are rich and can afford the costs like the person who had this made obviously was and could.

WOW-O-WOW, Was that tour absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for showing all of the incredible architecture and wood carving in the various rooms. I hope that the roof is in good shape. This is one of the most elegant places I've seen documented. And thank you for showing the old pictures of what part of it use to look like. The large room of all of those paintings, from portraits to scenery, side by side was definitely strange. It wasn't done for esthetic purposes. But it was rumored that Capone had no taste when it came to beauty. Looks like just another way to spend money on ill gotten gains.
Thank you so very much for this fabulous documentary. You did a great job.

Superb workmanship! Alas, they don't built them like this anymore. Everything is mass produced nowadays, nothing is handcrafted by artisans. I do hope this splendid home is preserved and restored. So many of these magnificent mansions have been demolished to make way for cookie cutter housing projects or cell-block apartments. Study the sad history of the splendid Schwab mansion in New York City.

Right!I agree! If I had to guess, I would say it's owned by a Firm, Bank or a Historical Society and is being renovated to be used for public use like a hotel or offices. From the looks of it , It was probably used for office purposes in the past. Looking at some of the structures , clearly updates have been done in the past , notably some of the metal posts and railings leading down certain stairways that are for sure NOT from the 1800's and...I'm pretty sure they didn't have LED Exit signs and modern Fire Extinguishers in Capone's days! lol

I worked with a woman who introduced me to her father and her family.her Dad was befriended to Capone as a young boy. They were poor and every Christmas Al played Santa Clause. He saw a different side of Al. In every house that Al lived in there were secret passageway to the garage and a hidden room like a vault for him to hide in. Before Al died he bought this family a small farm and a restaurant/cafe for them. I’m taking up for Al because he had people killed, but this family was shown a special friendship with Al. He left them money too.
