    Thank you for this insight. It has made me once again visit my weakness COUNTING!!!!!!.
    I don’t mean basic rhythms, it is counting when parts of a bar contain triplets or a part of a triplet is tied with another note from a different beat or a rest is involved in the triplet or complicated rhythm. I try to ignore this weakness and pretend I am ok, when I am not. Thank you for pointing it out in this presentation. I will now have to revisit counting 😔.
    Regards
    Terry

    Growth mindset is the main reason I started playing guitar at 29 years old. Now I’m 31 and can actually play a little bit

    Think what rung a bell for me is how do you handle yourself when you believe you cannot get it. Instead of getting agitated. Bite it smaller parts. Sometimes your not mentally prepared
    But come back to it. 👍

    I will watch this again and make notes, I love the way you come at this from the broader picture.

      Thanks, Ian. It's great to know that others find this sort of perspective helpful too.

    As always: pertinent, insightful, practical and inspiring. I have been watching Mark's videos for a couple of years now. I always learn something valuable. Thank you.

    After a long time in music I can recognize most of these aspects as fundamentals on my own learning processes. A very good video to open with, I would love to see futher developments of it and think most people could benefit from them.

      Thanks! Anything in particular that you'd like "further developments" to cover?

    Thank you for emphasizing these important points. A good reminder for me because sometimes I tend to forget about these aspects. Hence, a very helpful video.

    Hi Mark, Maybe one knows the things you mention, but it"s good to hear them again. I thinks it's important and helpful.

      Good to hear, Dennis! And it's helpful for me to hear them again, too. So I'm making these videos at least a bit for my own benefit as for others...

    It is a helpful video for me to remind me the foundamental skills and basic issues are really very important. I feel some of my foundamental skills are not solid enough, so it hold me back when I was trying to make progress. In recent a few months, I am trying to change some bad habits in my regular practicing, and tried some new practicing methods and mental exercises which I have learned from both of the two courses. I can feel my progress little by little. I am happy with my small progress, when small progress accumulated together, some day they can become a big step to going forward.

    PS What do I focus on in the scales game to win a scale? - Taking a few minutes relaxing tension in my body, calming myself, thinking through the theory of the scale and the fingering coming up. I forgot to say, I do the scale that I get right three times before I can tick it off as properly practised. It's a game I play only a little at a time. I don't want it to become a chore!

    I listened to the whole thing and, I’m sorry to say, it was just far too generic. Every time I thought I was about to hear a nugget of information that I could apply to my instrument, I just heard more generic issues that probably any musician has experienced from time to time. I’d love to hear something more specific. I’m sure singers/ sax players/ drummers could would be fine with listening to something more specific, even if it relates to guitar. I’m just trying to be constructive here, I think you’re on to something but would like you to take on board the above points (if you think they’re worth taking on board that is!).

      Julie Roddick fair enough if it helped you but maybe he needs to reveal a bit more in these videos. I’m yet to be convinced that a course with him would be beneficial for me based on this

      Thanks for commenting. This particular video is deliberately meant to be generic. It's about explaining the big picture of what general topic areas I cover and why they're important. Check out some of my other videos for more specific tips and explicit actions to take.

      I still think talent is a factor...dont quite agree with the suggestion it's all down to practice -practice

      I think that’s fairly normal. Mark is reminding us of certain elements that need looking at and has a paying service where he makes a living. That’s for those who realise this is something that needs work.

    Hi - I recognise what you are saying. I've gradually learned some and wish I had been aware of one in particular. That is that thing that keeps you turning up with a passion, to practice in a focused, calm, confident mindset even for only 10 minutes a day. For me, it's loving what I am learning. I never knew that I could become so closely attached to certain kinds of music. I know I love Baroque, -jazzy, syncopated, discordant interesting music. Hence Bach for a start. I'm learning to listen differently to all music with some idea of what's in there. I'm way bad at concentrating. One method I use with scales is this. If I make a mistake I will make myself start another scale. If I make a mistake in that one. I abandon it as well. I will only practice a scale that I can play without a mistake. That seems counter intuitive but I am am improving all my scales. I focus much more closely on each scale so that I don't make silly mistakes and have to move on! Maybe you know that game already!

    Confidence is an endless battle in some ways. For example, I can play this but can I orchestrate this?

    • @PlayInTheZone
      @PlayInTheZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is. One thing that I find helpful (that's backed up by the research) is to take small steps. Rather than wondering whether you can jump straight to orchestrating a whole thing, what is something you CAN do? Maybe it's to orchestrate just one bar. Or to orchestrate something simpler first. That way you're always slowly but surely building up your confidence.

      What you are saying is that you have the technical skill but don't believe you have?

    As a learner of a foreign language, I recognise the meta-cognitive approach to learning. What's fundamental, as an adult at least, is having an eye on the lay of the land, identifying aspects of learner, learning and subject, to improve efficiency and learning outcomes. After so many years of schooling, I realise I have had no idea how to learn, but just absorb information for tests; little wonder my performance anxiety. So a strategic approach is on offer, to reflect on my approach with a little coaching and guidance.

    I apologize for my impatience but 3 minutes into the video you have yet to offer anything for me to bite into. Perhaps it would help if you came right out and said " Here are 3 thing you can do to improve your musicianship. Number 1 is..."

    • @PlayInTheZone
      @PlayInTheZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could do that. But I find that even the best information frequently fails to actually deliver benefits unless it's presented in the right context. I do try and mix things up for different people's tastes, though. You'll find I have some shorter videos that get straight to the point. And some longer ones that give more detail and context...

  • @ray-piano9326
    @ray-piano9326 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really, the video is too slow. I'd prefer a 3 minute video with the great knowledge bullet-pointed on the screen. Sorry,, if it's important and worthwhile, why not get to the point in the first minute or two before I switch off. Good luck.

    • @PlayInTheZone
      @PlayInTheZone  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. Different people learn in different ways. Some people can get enough from a quick sprint through the key points. Others get huge value from talking around the ideas in more detail. (And I often find that's what's needed for people to actually ACT on the information)
