    I used to record my playing one out of every two weeks to get feedback from my teacher, and I do it now also for myself. But each time I fall in an otherwise very unprobable sequence of false starts and discarded half takes. This is the first time I find that's a profitable situation, instead of a problematic one in which I need to heal my attitude towards (or, in other words, this is my first hint on how to address this, by taking all this in a positive way). Thanks!

    Great tips and I recognize all of them. Since my retirement I have all the time to practice. Almost every day and my instrument is all set up to get going immediately without hindering anyone. The most valuable tip for me it to break “the project” into small pieces, chunks as Mark calls them. What I did not hear in this video (I hope I did not miss it), is to get it in your head first. That insight helped me a lot.

    Mark, how does this work when you are a live guitarist that is shredding leads to big crowds? I feel like if i looked at the crowd; I would lose it even more. Can you give an example of how you would do this while on stage holding your guitar?

    • @juan_ta
      @juan_ta ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I would tell you to follow his advice to practice it anywhere. It will get you used to it and aware of how that would feel in your situation on stage. (I guess I would be unfocusing a bit before those situations you describe, but just check it yourself anywhere).

    The thing is this - for me - I once played a week with a former Jazz Messenger - who assumed that I knew all that repertoire. I didn’t. It’s a ‘niche’ repertoire too. I was embarrassed by my playing. And I grew to hate him. He never ‘accommodated’ me at all. I struggled but I made it eventually. A huge learning curve for me. He was a b*****d. A very well known messenger.

    i hate putting pressure on myself and reacting negatively. it takes away the fun. what i do is play music i make or learn to play a cover of a song i like. when im learning it it's fun. but when i go to record it all of a sudden there's tension like ok NOW WERE RECORDING DON'T screw up. and it clouds my mind. i'm not fully there like wheni was ok with making mistakes. i need to implement the mindset of okness when im not recording to when i am. thanks u made alot of sense.

    My pianist friend shared that she rewarded herself for memorizing a few measures at a time by pouring M&Ms out onto the piano top. She popped a couple each time she was successful. That was in 1963 as a 12 year old, prior to any knowledge about reinforcement.

    Glad I rediscovered this video. I tried it out yesterday, using this idea after each "minitask" on my daily list, and got lots of stuff done. To make it interesting, I used "Wheel Decide" to make a spinner that randomly selects between 6 choices... 3 are in the "no rewards" side (1. nothing, 2. do 10 squats, 3. spend 3 mins tidying up) and 3 are on the reward side (1. watch something on my TH-cam queue, 2. have a cup of tea/coffee, 3. venture into the cursed lands of Twitter). Might change the last one about Twitter as it's not that compelling. Anyway it might be partly placebo effect, but I found it fun, and ended up doing more work than expected (I kept rolling "nothing", and really wanted a cup of tea).

    I have a very curios question: why the circle of fifths works? For example, why it happens that the number of alterations regularly increases going along this circle?

    • @pianoman8642
      @pianoman8642 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Going up by a fifth is actually going up by 7 semitones. There are 12 semitones in total and 7 and 12 are coprime, ie no factors in common. This means that by rising 7 semitones at a time you will hit every note in the scale. It also works with fourths and anything above a fifth for the same reason, but not tones, minor thirds, major thirds or ‘tritones’ because 2, 3, 4 and 6 are factors of 12.

    • @guidodemarcoroma
      @guidodemarcoroma หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, I like this answer that is going closer to what I look for, but I do not see why going up by the fifths we get the notes with increasing alterations. I mean G with one alteration, then D with two alterations,, A with three alterations and so on. This is very curious for me.

    • @pianoman8642
      @pianoman8642 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah ok now I get you. The western style of music has the convention of major/minor scales (unlike the eastern pentatonic scale). The most obvious is the major scale which is tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone. It’s easiest to picture the white notes on a piano starting at C. If you rise by a 5th you’ll see that most of the pattern is still intact but you’ll need to sharpen the F to achieve the final interval. A movement of a 5th (or 7 semiquavers) keeps most of the pattern intact but requires one more sharp. (Sorry if this is confusing. It makes sense in my head but now I try to explain it it’s quite tricky!)

    • @guidodemarcoroma
      @guidodemarcoroma หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry to insist, one more sharp, then two more sharps, three sharps and so on, what is the reason that makes possible this progression?

    A no-brainer. I have some interesting keyboard chords that have come up, getting better at playing them could be a lot of fun, but the underlay placement of old-russian words in the faster passages of Rachmaninoff's massive All-night Vigil will be needed very soon in a real concert, so it will make a big difference right now to have the words aspect of even one of those repeatably correct. That might make it seem possible to do the same with two or three more similar fast passages in the work.

  • @adrianjohnson5928

    Nice simple lesson Mark. You know I've spent a lifetime coaching sport and I find coaching myself in a positive way, as a musician or anything else, is natural. I've never seen or heard the advice about using your own name before. What a simple, clever and effective technique that is. I saw an article on the news last night about a hospice that has a telephone kiosk in the garden for bereaved people to go into and have conversations with a person they have lost. It strikes me "the wind telephone" would be a useful tool in this form of coaching. Or, come to that, helping people through mental health crises. Thanks for all the advice. I am using the stuff I got from the Road Map course daily, so thanks for that too.

I now have a music room where my band (which I didn’t have before) comes to rehearse every week. Every morning, after tea, I go in there to practice with an idea about what I want to accomplish.
