I am newly divorced and needed to learn how to change the oil in the riding lawn mower as I've never done it before. This video has been extremely helpful, thank you!

Never use the wrench to tighten the filter just use your hands

FYI: The proper way to pour oil is with the nozzle on top. That way air can enter the bottle as the oil pours out.

I notice you are wearing latex gloves in the video, a very important point is that latex and petroleum products don't get along. Petroleum products like oil actually attack latex, a demo I was shown when I got in the chemical business, they took a latex glove, blew it up some and tied it off, then put one tiny drop of oil on it, 3-4 minutes later the glove failed. Nitrile gloves work much better and don't fall apart on your hands when doing an oil change. It was previously mentioned that oil filters should only be tightened hand tight. I use a much better filter, a Purolator L10241 $6.99 at Advance Auto Parts. The JD filter and that Fram only have a TINY filtering element in them, that Purolator has a substantially larger filter on the inside where it counts.

Good video. In the commercial engine world, Fram is the running joke, but I have heard that their small engine filters are not the same junk as their automotive filters.

This must be the first time you did this! After a few oil changes, it'll only take you a couple of minutes to do all of what you've been doing for 20 minutes.

I am new to the John Deere D125 and thanks for the video. I will check to see what is new as I am the person doing all of the maintenance. Have a great day. By the way, I did some research on the oil filter that you used and that was not considered the first choice. Just my opinion that I am passing on.

Make sure inside of oil drain cap is also wiped clean to help avoid leakage that could occur after refilling. Also use the correct Mfg's instructions on how much to tighten filter after gasket contact, and of course, check the oil level on seated dipstick TWICE, once after initial refill and next after engine warm up. thanx

I suggest a small pressure washer to clean your engine prior to doing the oil work. Since you will already have the washer hooked up, wash it down again after your finished.

Caution on engine wash. - - Scan the proper engine parts to wash 1st & avoid electrical as well as hidden parts of the engine when cleaning.

Don’t ever use a 3rd party oil filter for John Deere mowers people or you’ll destroy the compression relief on your engine. Always use genuine John Deere filters

hand tight only for oil filter

  • @joshuamead1577

You should always use the old oil to lubricate the oil filter, and NEVER use the wrench to install the oil filter! Should always be hand tightened.

I would never put old oil on a new filter gasket. I always prefill the oil filter too, even if it's a sideways mount. The oil filter will absorb most of the oil in the filter material and will help lube the engine faster on startup, even if you spill a few drops, no big deal.

After contact to the mounting surface...the OIL FILTER... should NEVER be tightened more than 1/4 to 1/2 a turn. Small engines... I'll stick with 1/4. If you've ever had one stuck you know exactly what I'm getting at.
