  • In this weeks video I would love you "THE VIEWER" to tell me (comment section) who you think did the crime?
All the facts and evidence will be presented to you! So its I'm trusting your judgement on trying to solve this crime!
Often, when somebody mentions the Saddleworth Moors an immediate impression of the (Brady & Hindley) Moors Murders comes to mind. But on Monday the 2nd April 1832, another heinous murder occurred at a pub called The Moor Cock, or Bill O’ Jacks, which was its popular name. A murder where two men were slain in bloody savagery which is remembered to this day.
The pub was owned by William Bradbury (Bill) aged 84 who lived there with his son Thomas (Tom) aged 46, a gamekeeper who was unpopular and renown for his quick temper. The name Bill O’ Jacks came from William whose father was named Jack, thus he became Bill (the son of) Jacks - Bill O’ Jacks. Later, for some obscure reason, the pub was also known as Bills O’ Jacks. The pub was situated high above Yeoman Hey Reservoir and long before Dovestone reservoir was built.
On the early evening of Monday 2nd April 1832, Tom returned from a day on the moors and was relaxing with his friend and pub regular Reuben Platt. They were walking down the road from the pub to Greenfield where Tom was to buy some groceries and Reuben going to his home. Just after they set off they met Bill on his way to the pub and Tom gave his father the door key. Tom and Reuben carried on and some way down they met three men resting at the side of the road. One of the men asked them, in an Irish accent, how long was it to Holmfirth to which they replied about eight miles. Tom said to Reuben that he was uneasy about these men and was worried about his father being on his own at the pub. After reaching Greenfield the two men parted and, after getting his groceries, Tom returned to go back to the Moor Cock. After this, nothing was really known. WEB-BIL-O-JACS
On Tuesday morning, Bill’s granddaughter, Amelia, was sent to the pub to fetch some yeast from her grandfather. On arriving at the pub she saw somebody she could not recognise (Tom) lying in a pool of blood on the floor. She ran upstairs to find her grandfather lying on a bed also soaked in blood. Running to the nearest house at Binn Green (since demolished) about half-a-mile away, where she told the neighbour, James Whitehead who dashed to the scene and sent for a surgeon Mr Higginbottom, who eventually arrived from Uppermill and this is what he found according to a newspaper report.
“Thomas Bradbury was still on the floor, for such was the terror created by the spectacle, that those who had before arrived, were incapable of affording him any assistance. He was lying on his face in a pool of blood, with which his clothes were soaked; his head and face appeared to be a mass of clotted gore. Though apparently unconscious he made frequent attempts to rise from the floor, but each time sunk again into the pool of blood in which he had been lying. At this time pulsation had ceased at the wrist, and he was in fact, struggling in the agonies of death. In the chamber ( bedroom) was the old man, who, from the marks on the floor and the staircase, appeared to have waded through the blood in his stockings, and made his way upstairs to bed. He was insensible and talking incoherently. There was a deep cut to the left side of the head down to the parietal bone, which was considerably depressed. the fingers on the left hand were cut to pieces; the wrist and elbow of the left arm were cut and mangled in a shocking manner, the muscle being cut through to the bone, which was broken to pieces; and the body from head to foot was covered in bruises”.
Tom who they knew was beyond help was taken to bed and was found to have sixteen wounds to the head, two of which had fractured his skull, and bruises all over his body, he died before they could finish dressing his wounds., the old man died in the early hours of the following morning.

Thats a truly superb video, so pleased you did this my parents used to tell me about this murder as I used to go hiking up there in the winter , seen the grave, so interesting but I still wouldn't like to say who did the grisly deed. You did them proud lad. Many stories from up there are in the books by Ammon Wrigley a story teller, my grandparents used to be in his fellowship going to the Star pub on Union St, Oldham to listen to his readings.

Another cracking vid. This is impossible to call and if only someone could solve it, which could bring some belated “ justice” though I use that word pretty scornfully now. My conscious bias ( sorry but being a northern Irish Protestant and unionist it exists ) says the Irishmen. My rational sense says this story about the 3 is far too convenient and perfect scapegoats for a legal system that would, and did struggle in the day to get solid convictions based on proper scientific and genuine evidence. The manner of their death, the actual violence used if that was today they’d be thinking…personal. Extremely vicious and almost trying to wipe out not only their lives but the very visual existence of them. Horrifying. I certainly get your feeling of malevolence at the place knowing what you did and you’d certainly be imagining what it must’ve been like in that desolate place and the victims knowing they were alone to face this horror. Absolutely love this relationship with your dad my eldest lad and me are like this and it’s a joy to witness and even better to experience, truly lucky. Bet you’re as proud of him as he is of you, wonderful. 👍

As always professionally produced, great narratives and editing and kept it interesting throughout, holding my attention every second. What an amazing find with the cellars still there. Loved the added humour too haha, your Dad never lets us down, 'spicy, not like curry, Eccles cakes ' lol, all that sugar should have given him plenty of energy to open that bloody sandwich quicker too! desert before main, the way forward! Ps....next time your out in those consitions you need a bit of Bailey's in those coffee's for warmth. Thanks for the entertainment, well done again, see you on your next production.

Wow Ant that was powerful and you certainly captured the deaths of Bill and his son. What a tragic end no matter what a troubled pair they might have been. I can almost feel the eeriness of the place where the pub was and surrounding area. Not got an explanation why I think it was the 2 gypsy Plats except that they had history with Bill and took it one step further by murdering him and his son. Love that your dad goes exploring with you and it was funny to see him open that sandwich bless him. I think you deserve more recognition for these videos you are making. That was my thinking too, it was so brutal and personal, that I'm sure it must have been someone who knew them and had a grudge. I think an interrupted burglary, with people who were startled, would have been quick kills then escapes, but this/these killer/killers seem to have spent time doing what they were doing, like it was planned.

Another great video - Hard to say for certain, but I believe it was the Irish travelers behind the murders. One of the victims before he died said 'Pats' (plural form) meaning there was more than one person. If it was a simple robbery, they would have just killed the the victim's quickly and made their escape, but the perpetrators took the time to thoroughly bludgeon them. This shows that the killers new their victim(s) and there was some hatred between them.

Reuben Platts I think is a good suspect. The old man was having difficulty breathing. He could have been trying to say Platts and they miss heard him thinking he was saying pats. I mean yes the three Irish men could be suspects. But they also could have actually been trying to get to that place they were said to be asking about too. Also they could have been involved and Platts used there encounter on the road as a way to throw his friend off of what he had planned.

Now this can all be found in print about her and this is the main reason the pub got demolished. It disturbed local people her enterprising spirt after the event .I dont think she was a local girl but Tom and Bill still have relations in those parts still .l actually went to school when very young with one of them .l believe the grave is always visited .Peace 🙏
