My friend and I made these fans. We are working as hard as we can to keep these fans in stock and ready to order. Please keep checking periodically for stock. We've got parts coming in from all over, expedited in some cases. Please be patient with us, we're just a 2 person 1 printer operation trying to provide a product people need. I have Tmobile home internet, so I know the struggles of a slow connection.
How will customers know when the fans are available for purchase? I ordered the t-mobile internet system. When I saw Nate's video, I returned the unit because I was unable to purchase one of your fan systems. Thanks
Nate I saw you video about a month or so ago. I had been using your idea of the fan below the trashcan at that time. With the present firmware update the unit stays on N41 and B66 BUT if I binge watch and stream a lot, the darn thing freezes and I have to do a soft reboot . I decided to try this top fan from Etsy. I gotta tell you those guys selling these units are fantastic! As you said if they're out of stock, Etsy won't show a listing but I used your link, left a message with Daniel who contacted me very quickly and worked with me to get a fan shipped out. I can't say enough about these guys. I'm hoping the use of a fan on top to suck out the hot air will work better and avoid these buffering and freezing issues. You've been a great help with all your tips and had to thank you once again for your great videos.
Order a noctua fan, they tend to be quieter. If the noctua fan you buy is the same db as another you will notice that it is a more soothing sound instead of a harsher sound compared to other fans. I ordered a trash can and your videos helped to seal the deal when it comes to trying it out. Thank you.
Hey Nate, I just bought one of these and have been using it for a few days. So far so good! My gateway is perched on a windowsill on the 2nd floor on the west side of my house. Now that summer is here and the temps are in the '90's, I was having problems in the afternoon and evening with losing my internet and having to reboot my gateway or even unplug it and let it cool off for a few minutes. I am not even using the wireless capability - I have it feeding directly into my Asus wireless router. After installing the fan, the temps dropped to 77F on the outside and 87F on the very top (I removed the fan to take a reading). Leaving the fan off for 15 minutes, I was getting temps of 95F on the side and 118F on the top. Since I got this fan a few days ago, I have had zero problems with losing my internet connection!
Thanks for sharing all of this. I am now 1 day into T Mobile internet. Performance is really good, but that's in large part, due to what's you've done and shared. - Most noticeable: know where the towers are and what they are capable of. I have two bars pretty much everywhere. One location is LTE only. Another is LTE and 5G. There's a noticeable difference. - I also noticed the heat and there you were! Picked up one of the fans (AC Infinity MULTIFAN S3) and it works great without the foam. Did change one thing: I have it pulling instead of pushing air through the gateway. Don't have objective data (temps), but to the touch it feels a little cooler. Thanks for doing this!!
I got the T-Mobile trash can Home Internet doohicky a couple days ago. It is working great, but have noticed it’s running warm. I just ordered the fan off the Etsy shop! Thanks for the video and all your testing!
Finally T Mobile home internet is available in my area! Ordered same last Sunday and should be getting the gateway tomorrow. I ordered the fan which will go out in about 7 to 10 days.
Another informative video! I've used your first suggestion and have the fan located on the bottom. Since my Gateway sits on a small pedestal on the floor, I use a foam filter to cut down on dust in the unit between the fan and the router. Also found that vaccum hoses for cars, etc ,with a wood dowel to join the ends, work great to cover that bottom opening of the gateway. Because of the foam filter, I run the fan higher to get better air penetration and therefore liked the 3 speed design. Also to note, there is talk of a brand new gateway from T Mobile. Seems it's rumors presently but picture of it are circulating. If that's true these Etsy suppliers maybe short lived which is sad because I always like to see good old American ingenuity and give these guys two thumbs up! Thanks again for always keeping us updated. Anthony
Thanks! Lots of us creating good makeshift solutions here! I've seen the rumors and know its been delayed atleast once but look forward to when it does come out.
Thanks again Mr. Tater for reviewing this fan for our small shop. We currently have several dozen fans in stock, as of 12-7-21. We should have enough to fulfill as many orders that come our way. Click the link in the description to come to our store!
I removed the battery which reduced the heat generated by the Gateway. Removing the battery also allows me to cycle power nightly with a digital timer to keep it running smoothly.
Early in video you mention turning off wifi as a method to reduce heat. How is this done? I also use ethernet connection to my router but don't know how to disable T-mobile wifi signal.
This is pretty cool, literally! Fortunately I haven’t had any overheating issues yet because it’s Fall in the northeast and the weather is cool. This is something to keep in mind for next Spring/Summer though.
I'm having major issues with my gateway and it resetting itself randomly these gateways were poorly made. Not sure if I should try to get the newer black box version or try the 3rd party fan.
Greetings Nater, a question that has my head spinning, can I buy a router of the same one that you use and put my T-Mobile SIM card in it? Since T-Mobile still does not offer residential service but my signal is perfect on my cell phone, it reaches me up to 200mbps in LTE
There are certainly options to achieve that effect. I wouldn't wish this gateway on anyone though... There are numerous 4G/5G gateway/modems out there that you can put a sim card in to use as your home internet. I reviewed one option recently actually: th-cam.com/video/tTrer83xqs8/w-d-xo.html
I need Tmobile to reimburse me if I do order this. 😂 I just walked over to the replacement unit and it is warm. I also turned the 'T' towards the Tower which is a few blocks away and I'll see if it works any better than before. Thank you again sir for great info on our Cylinder thingy. 🙄😉😃
I have the trash can fan from Esty. My problem is that it has developed a noisy vibration. For now I have minimized the noise by putting foam insulation tape on the top of the modem. Fan does not sit as firmly on the modem but the reduction in noise is worth it.
Ok how can tell what fan is what on the web page. Yes it shows two different ones and I am thinking the 49 dollar one is the one you talk about when you say thick one?
I know this isnt about the video but do you know how to change the NAT type because I recently started having this issue and it was working fine with the tmobile internet and I cant play online on xbox.
Hey Nater, I just went to buy one of the T Mobile Trash can Lid and they were sold out. I sent Daniel a message that I wanted one Black along with a black base with 4 female SMA connectors. Looks like if I can get it it will be a bit pricey but worth it. It's only money and I can't take it with me...
Hey Nate me and my wife have been using the gateway and we really like it well right now ours just completely shut down it sits on top of a little fan so to keep it cool have you ever come across that where the gateways just completely shut down and we are getting a new one sent to us
Just curious... the black fan you had the gateway sitting on top of so the fan was pushing air up through the tower. But the new shiny ones you placed on the top drawing the air through the tower. Which placement is better or is there a difference?
Hey Nate I'm hoping you can help me. We have this T mobile internet and my wife is trying to work from home everything works as far as the computer. The issue is the phone will not connect it is hooked up thru a Meraki box Cisco. I can't find anyone that can point me in the right direction to get this to work. Hoping you might have a suggestion.
You should talk to the employer IT dept to understand the needs for their VoIP phone to work (encryption, public IPv4, port forwarding, etc). Explain you're using fixed wireless with cgnat an no port forwarding. On thing that may fix it is running your own router "behind" the gateway with a VPN.
If you stumble on this, I got the fans on Amazon. It made a huge difference. When we had a heavy load ie gaming that can got hot and was iffy where I think it would overheat, and we'd loose connection once or twice a day not very long. Since the fan, we've had no issue, and, the can is Luke warm. You can barley hear the fan on high speed. Good tip and we think it made / helped. Oh and I opted to run the fan via its own power and not use the can to power fan.
I wouldn't keep a transmitter on my desk in general. I put mine in the basement and ran a cable up the wall, also picked up a pair of waveform antennae and mounted them outside the house instead. This fan is exactly what I need. I already fried 2 routers since I sometimes throw around quite large files for work and if a windows forced update download starts at the same time, it's reboot city more than productivity city with the trashcan. Thanks for the info, even if I am over a year late :P
Howard, on mobile you have to hit the small down arrow at the end of the video title to expand the description box. Then you can see the link in the video description. It is www.etsy.com/shop/DC3Dprojects
Sorry we are trying as hard as we can. Being on etsy, you can't allow backorder in a conventional way. We could list the part, but then list the processing time to 15 business days. That doesn't seem right to do to our customers. I'll post when we have fans in stock. Looking to be about 5-7 days from now. Thanks for your patience and possible patronage!
I purchased the smaller fan. Plugged it in and noticed a minor download improvement maybe, not significant. Noise not an issue. I had the modem plugged into an extra AC socket on an X10 interface module (that runs lights over AC). I moved the AC plug directly to a wall plug basically power cycling the modem for the first time (I think) since I'd gotten the fan. Previously I rarely ever saw the secondary signal on the modem PC web interface (I've never had the secondary signal last more than a few hours and can count on one hand the number of times ever) and only 2 bars showing on the primary. Suddenly I went from a max of around 80mbps, up to over 200 in one test (a new record). And now the modem PC web interface shows 3 bars on both the primary and 5G secondary signal consistently. Ping went down at least 50+%. Uploads went from avg 6-10 up to 40max. Coincidence? . Also running 5 devices from the wifi of the modem including up to 3 tvs at once.
Correct but USB is 5V so the 1.4 watts is about 0.28 amps but thats without the AC-DC efficiency loss so I put it closer to the 0.25 amp line in the chart.
The screen does not show temp. I have monitored speeds. For me its more about consistency and keep from band switching which hurts my speed drastically.
No hosting or porting yet. Can somewhat get pass that with a capable VPN though. However if you want to host or port fwd and have a broadband alternative I'd say go with that.
I've been using T Mobile internet for over 2 years. Started with the 4g router and went to Nokia 5g as soon as I was aware of it. It worked flawlessly until about 6 weeks ago. That's when the overheating started. I got a replacement gateway and it was actually worse. I bought the fan and it only marginally improved the situation. I was getting constant buffering and signal drops throughout the day. I got the tower location, moved the gateway, watched the videos, all to little or no improvement. I was about to drop the service when I saw a comment about disconnecting the mesh Wi-Fi system from the gateway. I had a Deco 6 mesh network and decided to unplug it. Since I have removed the mesh network I have not had any drops/buffering. I should point out that I used the mesh system for the entire time I have had the gateway and only had problems with overheating in the past couple of months. I also found that I had sufficient signal strength throughout the house without the mesh network. Just wanted to share my experience.
David, on mobile you have to hit the small down arrow at the end of the video title to expand the description box. Then you can see the links. It is www.etsy.com/shop/DC3Dprojects
I opened my 5G21 and removed a large black unused bracket, 2 screws, that mounted right of the heat sink. With the air unblocked, you get a passive hurricane. Also, sit the tower on top of a wire bracket and if you are in crazy heat, wrap an acetate tube to extend way above the top, to increase the hot air pull. The wifis don't turn off on mine. I wish i could get the RJ11 phone jack and USB C working.
Hi Nate, great video. I bought the black fan and adapter after I saw your last recommendation and I'm happy with the results. My question is: I have the gateway sitting on top of the fan and don't have weatherstripping like you do. Would there be any advantage to putting the fan on top of the gateway to draw the air through? Thanks again for your T-Mobile videos!
For best performance (top or bottom) you should seal up leak paths between the fan and gateway. That said it really doesn't need much airflow to cool down so if what your doing works, why change? You can do top or bottom mount. Each has pro/cons but either works.
@@NaterTater Not that simple. It's a question of whether you BLOW air onto the hot part or SUCK air past it. (Imagine trying to suck out a candle instead of blowing it out. :-) ) But, either will probably work to some degree. Your results speak for themselves in terms of the cooling. I measure the top of my own unit at about 115-120° F, with the wifi off, so it will be interesting to see the difference that it makes.
Nate, just got my fan. Can I ask are the ones you have plastic? Mine doesn't fit tight like yours and would fall off if I turned the gateway upside down. Also, how thick is your deeper shroud unit that fits over the router. Mine is measuring 1 1/2 inch on the side. Just want to make sure i ordered the correct one. I wanted the larger one as you recommended. So far, after having it on for 2 hours, the trashcan has cooled down and it maybe a coincidence but speed increased by 50 mbps to over 200! Great seller to work with also. He really went out of his way to get this out to me. Hoping the fan corrects the trashcan from freezing up once a week needing a reboot. Thanks again Nate for bringing this product to our attention .
@@nickpapagiorgio2253 I have 6 routers in my mesh system, my main is an Asus RT-AC88U. Here's a breakdown on my setup: th-cam.com/video/hIKZzCkbXDY/w-d-xo.html. Minus the one new one I added: th-cam.com/video/5kse94JM0IA/w-d-xo.html
Great demonstration! Do you find having the fan on top is as good, or better than having on the bottom of the unit? I've had the small (80mm) fan on top and I never feel any real warmth. When I place it on the bottom it seems much less effective (but I don't have it sealed off the way have it.
You definitely have to seal the gaps to be effective, either way should work very similarly if sealed. There are pros and cons to both, the con to the top mount is you can't see the display but in reality I never look at the display anyways.
This is cool (pun intended), but I actually prefer the black fan on the bottom. I was wondering why I would want to draw power from a unit that I was trying to cool. Probably too negligible to matter. Personally, I would rather set my gateway on/in a unit similar to this with the fan on the bottom. It would look better IMHO and do a better job. Vent slots would need to be milled below the fan for intake. Just my 2 cents and not meant to disparage this good idea at all.
Some do power from an external source but my logic is the extra power draw is really handled by the power "brick" which is in line with the power cord so not on the gateway itself.
@@NaterTater Amazon delivered my black base fan tonight. Within 1/2 hour the gateway is cool...no noticeable heat. Of course everything is COOL tonight🙂
Solved my inconsistent N41 performance problem. While trash can still functions better without the fan, I removed the aluminum screen from the window, I now get download speeds of 120-180 Mbps with steady N41 readings of RSRQ -12, RSRP -104, SINR of about 8.
Our gateway failed due to overheating, the T-Mobile tech I spoke to said there is a known issue with the battery and battery charging system in the Nokia device.

Since these guys are aren't taking orders, anyone know if the STL file is out there download so we can print one ourselves (if we have a 3d printer).
They are still taking orders. Message them if out of stock.
Can you post a link on comets, using a phone and links do not show up
Thanks
David, on mobile you have to hit the small down arrow at the end of the video title to expand the description box. Then you can see the links. It is www.etsy.com/shop/DC3Dprojects
I'll stick with my 12 dollar one from Amazon. My cord is short just like that one. Works great and it is quiet. It gets the job done.
Yes many options out there. This is sleeker and more efficient (better sealed) than my $13 fan setup.
Is it intake our outake fan?
Out, blows upward.
i keep having issues where I won't lose signal but the connection refuses to work unless i reset the router. is this a sign of overheating?
Could be. Another could be poor signal connection that drops.
@@NaterTater it's weird, I sit at 3 bars getting 280s download. But I have to reset multiple times a day
@@robertcase6475 unfortunately you arent alone with that issue. Some say the cooling fan reduced or stopped the need for reboots.
Love the video thumbnail Nate. There were images leaked of a new TMHI router, sounds like they are going away from this model.
Yes I look forward to it!
@@NaterTater any knowledge of this new router? Will that be a router to go with the current gateway or will this be a new gateway?
@@tb2324 all new gateway. Supposedly will fix lots of these bridge mode, band locking etc issues
Will they change the router for the existing customers or only for new customers will be available?
@@Norman1965arg they upgrade but it can take months. I went from 4G white box to 5G gray cylinder
Does this help with speeds?
Yes
@@NaterTater how significant is the difference?
@@trevordane4466 depends. I discuss it in the video. Varies.
I Hurd or saw something were they are coming out with a better model modem hopefully it's true I still have my white modem works fine
Is this fan sucking the air out or blowing air in??
Sucking
Nate, those 3D fans for the Nokia seem sold out everywhere. I sure want one. Do you have any suggestions?
You can make your own cooling setup with this video and the links its video description th-cam.com/video/iQHTk7y2G70/w-d-xo.html
Just bought one! Thanks!!
😎
Which way is the air blowing? Down? Or up?
Up! Heat rises.
Sounds like the right one. I assume there is some production variation in these 3D printed parts but i wouldnt worry. Sounds like its working!
U guys still recommending using a fan on these gateways? Like worth the $30 really if I 0lan to keep it for a while? Late to the fan party lol😅
I think the main one that needs the fan is this Nokia one. Others are less susceptible to overheating.
I was hoping the thicker silver fan would fit on the bottom as it looks like it would cover the gap at the bottom.
These are designed to be on top only.
@@NaterTater Thanks for the review on these, I'll be picking one up. Also what's the model of your ASUS router
@@NaterTater THANKS!
Could you instead of messing with this tower buy a aftermarket router like Netgear router and put the SIM card in it?
You can but it wouldnt work without matching IMEI.
Oh ok
What’s IMEI?
Solved my inconsistent N41 performance problem. While trash can still functions better without the fan, I removed the aluminum screen from the window, I now get download speeds of 120-180 Mbps with steady N41 readings of RSRQ -12, RSRP -104, SINR of about 8.
ah, good find! A metallic screen does create signal loss.
Our gateway failed due to overheating, the T-Mobile tech I spoke to said there is a known issue with the battery and battery charging system in the Nokia device.
Yes
You said you turned off WiFi, how to you turn it off I thought that wasn’t an option
th-cam.com/video/1QNSapXpgio/w-d-xo.html thats how to turn off wifi. I have several other TMHI videos on my channel if interested.
Have you noticed any degradation is signal reception strength with the fan on top?
No. The antennas are on the sides.
Mine sits in front of an A/C vent. #frosty
Tmobile should dump these Nokia boxes. Why do customers have to jump through hoops to keep the device cool !?
I’ve had nothing but problems with my gateway from T-Mobile and their so called “personal tech support” is a complete joke
Fans are already sold out 🤦🏼♂️
Yeah, it's just 2 guys 3D printing them but they are working on a solution. Keep an eye on it or message them on Etsy.
Yes we are working hard sourcing parts. Please be patient with us. We hoped Mr. Tater reviewing our fans would boost our business, but he blew it up (in the best of ways) instead! I'll post as soon as we have more in stock. Thanks for your patience and potential patronage.
Is this really helping anybody?
Yes, many people report more consistent and higher speed. Seems crazy at first but the unit runs hot despite large heat sinks.

Bro !!!!
Please get an Oculus quest 2
why?
Maybe TMobile should just go back to the drawing board and build an internet gateway that doesn’t overheat!!!
Due out in a few months!
Bro this thing sucks, i had to return one already. It’s crap design by nokia, they live in a freezing cold place they didn’t think about it.
