Phantom 2040 made me nostalgic for an era where, for some reason, everyone was rebooting existing properties as cyberpunk. Marvel 2099, Batman Beyond, even Loonatics Unleashed.
Actually, to be honest, Phantom 2040 kind of started that trend, so, without it, you have no shows like Zorro: Generation Z, Loonatix: Unleashed, and, most notably, Batman Beyond/Batman of the Future, as Phantom 2040 predated all of those shows. One can also possibly consider James Bond Jr. the impetus for Phantom 2040 and its existence as well. Finally, it is funny that you mentioned Batman, as Mark Hamill also had a recurring character in Phantom 2040 as well.
Regarding the two Shadowrun games: The SNES game is based, loosely, on the Shadowrun novel, "Never Deal With A Dragon". The Genesis game is based on the Shadowrun tabletop RPG. Just a bit of information for you.
The Genesis version wasn't even started until a late beta version of the SNES was presented to FASA staff and they didn't like how the game system was built. They found a company and got them to make the Genesis version with a scratch made script and engine in less than a year that was closer to the tabletop game.
When I was growing up, I played SNES Shadowrun at a friend’s house and loved it! My parents somehow found a copy for Christmas for me, sounds like it was hard to find even in the prime of the SNES. The more recent Shadowrun games are great too, I think they’re on all current systems. They even have the main character from the SNES game. Love the other choices too!
Medabots anime is based on the games, and not the other way around! The Medabots games go back from the original GB, infact. The other Medabots GBA title that came to the west (the RPG one) is amazing! I enjoyed AX too, but definitely not as much. Just played through them again late last year. Android Assault and Power Dolls really caught my eye! And I remember playing Lady Sia on an emulator back in highschool and really enjoying it, but never finished it. Very nice choices in here!
@@st1ka I can't speak much for the older ones, they were never released in the west (I have copies of japanese verisons but just mildly tried them out), but the GBA Medabots RPG is awesome, definitely one of my favourite GBA games. The older ones play pretty much the same but the GBA has more visual flare to it, basically. It's like a remake of the 2nd or 3rd Medabots game AFAIK.
@@st1ka the GBA Medabots RPG is an amazing, deeply underrated game but please don't expect to figure out what you're doing immediately. you can play it for weeks and still figure out new things about how combat & customization work; it's the kinda game you gotta really dedicate yourself to, like something Japanese kids were meant to obsess over all summer vacation. even all the basics are hard to memorize & keep in mind at all times to really form tactics around them, and there are hidden mechanics too. the GBA game is a remake of 2 on GBC; the game before that was Medarot 1 on the original GB and the third one is Medarot R on PS1. both are translated; 1 shows its age but with a guide (at least look up the medal locations, the game can be really assholey with those) & speed-up feature (emulator or Switch collection if you know Japanese) I got a lot of fun out of it still. R is considered a black sheep of the series in Japan and by some an outright bad game for gameplay balancing reasons (what Japanese user reviewers call "part inflation") but I liked what I played of it & it's the third mainline game (GBC) is being fan-patched right now (2 was skipped cuz of the remake being officially released back in the day) so you can try out the other 3 until that comes out. 1 is flawed but pretty short (especially for an RPG) while the GBA one is a massive commitment but might be my favorite turn-based RPG battle system of all time.
I will always give a like to the compilation videos that use chapters and write the names in them, honesty/transparency should be rewarded more! Besides that, this list was actually great. I only knew about 8 of them - Counting each chapter as a separate entry. At least two of them were something I need to play as well. Awesome.
I love Lady Sia, about time someone on TH-cam covered it. I found it while looking for roms to put on my EZ Flash Omega, and liked it a lot. Yeah, the audio is lackluster, but that's usually the case with the GBA. Really wish Nintendo gave it some better sound hardware. I'm also not surprised that Medabots GX gets overlooked, I remember that anime being aired when I was around 5 years old, but it was sort of a bargain bin anime no one cared about. Ruff N' Tumble looks nice, but I hope it has better level design than most Euro platformers. A lot of them really had cheap deaths.
I wonder, is the the PAL version of Phantom cut sceneless, because it's multilingual? OG Phantom was one of my favorite comic series as a kid... Also, great timing for "fall to the cracks", and the, er, visuals. Fun fact, Prince Brandon in Kyrandia "Full Talkies" was voiced by Joe Kucan, who folks might remember as Kane in Command&Conquer. A bit hammy at times.... I recall Firemen being the winner of some coding competition or such. Deserved. Ruff'n Tumble never got console releases, but I recently randomly bumped into a, spiritual sequel, Rad Rodgers. Takes more than a few cues from R&T...
I have the same theory, In fact i wrote a comment about that along with a bit more detail on my thoughts as to why in this very comments section! In fact someone in live chat said it was because of: "Lack of space + laziness when cramming in the other euro languages I beleive" and although i'm a bit reluctant about the "laziness" part, i think other than the typos he's probably correct.
Princess Minerva might have some of the most impressive spritework on the SNES - horniness aside. I mean, let's be real to achieve such horny sprites on the SNES is no small feat.
St1ka, you really are impressive when you bring out these hidden gem videos. I'm a huge fan of rarely played games, and its rare for me to have even heard of more than a few titles per video.
Android Assault/Bal-Arma (whatever its alternate name is) deserved an SNES/NSFC or Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port as well. I would also like to see a Ultimate Edition of Darius I and Darius II for the SNES/NSFC, too.
Awesome video. Most of the games are not particularly interesting to me, but I looked at the description of each. The author has a talent for talking about retro games. Marvelos!
I think the reason why they replaced the cutscenes with simplified synopses in the PAL version of Phantom 2040, was because the PAL version is multilingual. So probably to cut down on space taken up by the 3 different language modes (English, French, and German) They removed the animated cutscenes so the different scripts packed into one version of the game would'nt bloat things out. But that is just a theory.
Another great selection St1ka. The funny thing is while I do agree and love the Genesis version, the current iterations of Shadowrun are based on the SNES entry and even include Jake Armitage who is the main character of that version. Your character finds him, funnily enough, at the start of the game in a morgue paying homage to that entry. Also, I loved Phantom 2040 except here in the states I think they aired the episodes out of order.
@@st1ka If were going pedantic with this, the SNES version is heavily referenced and is canon for the latest Shadowrun games whereas the Genesis version is more faithful to the source material. The pen & paper RPG game.
@@StriderVM Yep I think that's an accurate assment. In the end, the Sega version has almost no story and it requires you to read the manual, so I can understand how someone who is just download a rom might not be into it
Great video!! Love Phantom 2040!! I ignored it at the time of it's release but discovered it a few years ago and really enjoyed it!! Star Control 2 is awesome! Played it on the 3do and finished the whole game!👍👍👍
A solid list of games. Two more to add: _Crusader of Centy_ (or _Soleil_ in Europe) is a Mega Drive / Genesis Zelda-like where the main character gets familiars. Each familiar grants a special ability, and some abilities can be combined. The story, while short, is also a strong point. _Super Hydlide_ is a MSX action RPG that was ported to the Mega Drive / Genesis. Like most other MSX games, you'll need to find a manual for it, as it's complex enough to need one but lacks much in the way of in-game hints. Even with a manual it's not for everyone, but an interesting attempt at a complex action RPG none the less.
@@st1ka The Mega Drive version both looks and sounds (slightly) better; then again it was released two years after the MSX version, so it's more of a remaster than a straight port.
Some good points there, even one good quality & often overlooked Amiga game! If you want more, try: X-Out, Disposable Hero (side scrolling shooters) Banshee (vertically scrolling shooter, very bitmap bros -like graphics, but not) Walker (kind of Operation Wolf with movable mech) Virocop (dual stick shooter, that's also kind of platformer) Super Stardust (best Asteroids clone, also DOS version available) Slamtilt (by the other team, that could do quality pinball games)
The Firemen 2 Pete & Danny on PS1 is great, it's in Japanese, but with a little effort and patience you can play the whole game. On Snes there is also another very similar firefighter game called Ignition Factor (from Jaleco). Other firefighter games are PS1's Rosco McQueen (from Psygnosis), in 2004 on PS2 there's Firefighter F.D. 18 (by Konami), and on PCs there's a firefighter RTS franchise called Emergency, which has several games.
The movie of The Phantom literally is an adaptation of the comic strip version of The Phantom, which takes place around 100 to 110 years prior to the events of Phantom 2040, and then there is a somewhat related animated series that is called Defenders of the Earth (which would make an awesome side-scrolling multiplayer beat-em-up/brawler/conveyor belt fighter video game, by the way) that takes place in the 1980s (and I hear that it is getting a sequel/reboot/reimagining of some sort).
Fun video and good choices. I've been meaning to check out Shadowrun on Genesis and your review convinced me (and also let's me know how to get started :-) and Phantom 2040 also looks like it very much worth playing.
@@RyutheWeredragon Well, that’s in part because it’s basically canon to the metaplot of the novels and the books, given that it’s about Jake Armitage. Genesis is like a campaign run in the setting. It might be legitimate, it might not.
Remember to read the manual for the Sega version, it really helps. Also, you should spend the first hour or two doing easy quests like escort missions to build karma ^^
@@RyutheWeredragon Yeah the SNES version is the more popular one, but I think it's because the Sega version has a greater barrier to entry. Anyone can pick up on the SNES' rules and controls. The Sega version requires you to read the manual and you start out WAY underpowered at the start. The good thing is that towards the end you pretty much become a demi-god
Princess Minerva, an RPG that reflects your current armor? That is fascinating. Though the attire style I am convinced at the time is a case of "Yes teh style is ridiculous so we are gonna out ridiculous the other"
*Acktually*, Kyrandia seems to require only a 8088, it really is a 16-bit game! (The same for SC2) OTOH, I do disagree about the GBA being "16-bit". On the right hands, the GBA could do as good as the Saturn! Heck, add some dither transparency to this Medabots and you could see it on the shop, right next o Panzer Dragoon!
@@st1ka maybe comparing to the CD32 would be more fitting; particularly since a lot of the AGA games were either OCS enhanced ports or new, original, games still made with the OCS mindset and aesthetics
Heck, the 3DO would also be a good one. Both consoles use ARM processors, after all! It should be noted, however, that the 3DO had polygon capabilities, while the CD32 was simply a faster (in some operations only) A1200
that princess minerva sounds amazing. My friend Loved Shadowrun to death!!! I still remember my first time playing the game as he was sitting next to me. I died to the first enemy since I missed SO MANY TIMES!
Technically Sega Genesis is 32bit platform also. Motorolla 68000 is 32bit CPU with external RAM bus width 16bit. It's like Nintendo 64 is 9bit console, because it's RAM connected with weird 9bit bus~
@@st1ka I think you're confusing "retro-looking" with "16 bits". :) The GBA may not have dedicated 3D hardware but "number-of-Ds" is a different metric than "number of bits". Bits represented way more than a 90s console marketing gimmick: number of onscreen colors, resolution, processing speed (well, how fast data can be processed, not how fast the CPU runs), amount of addressable (thus, available) memory, both in terms of RAM and ROM, etc... A 16-bit system cannot do what the GBA can, not without severe concessions (Also worth mentioning the PS1 has a processor running 2x as fast as the GBA (about 1.50-1.75x for the Saturn), but the GBA runs over 5x faster than an SNES - the comparison seems even *more* unfair when comparing it with retro consoles...). Playing devil's advocate though, the GBA sound chip has two 16-bit processors, so I guess you could make a case for that? In the same way the Jaguar with its two 32 bit processors was a "64 bit console", I guess? :P
@@rollanddev I mean I get what you mean, but comparing PS1 games with GBA is still unfair to the system. Whereas GBA games feel much more at home on a 16-bit video. :P
If you're still reading, I suggest Fist Samurai for the Amiga (NOT the SNES version, avoid that), it's a quite original puzzle platformer that also has great visuals, combat and music.I recently played it trough and trough and I can say that it still holds up today. Also: Harlequin, another Amiga puzzle platformer.
@@st1ka in the SNES version they removed all the puzzle elements, it's just a run of the mill platformer (they also removed a lot of bosses). On the Amiga you have to find a number of magic bells and use them to solve puzzles in order to advance. It's also kind of a metroidvania, sometimes you have to backtrack to use a bell or to find a passage (some walls are breakable).
Ah in this case I downloaded the games' covers and ran them through an AI upscaller. I originally had the borders black, but people kept asking me to fill them with something
I couldn't have come across this video at a better time, I have been looking for some cool retro games to play for my channel. Thank you! These games look awesome! Surely worth a try.
Great video that delivers as it says in the title. Lots of new games to further investigate. Shoutouts to Phantom 2040; ahead of its time as a show. I like how both versions tried to be faithful to the character design of the show. Shadowrun on Genesis is such a great, open-world RPG, in the truest sense "role-playing". I had no idea what I was in for when I picked that up on sale back in the day. SIlent Debuggers is a game that's always kinda interested me since seeing a short review on it on the short-lived US TV version of "Gamepro". That especially looks like a game that would do well with an indie remake.
Excellent video! My personal favorite was Power Dolls. I do not understand why it was not more popular. The graphics look good for the time and Power Dolls has a strong tactical gameplay. Featuring permadeath is something not commonly used in mecha turn based games. The fanservice is rewarding but not too risqué(39:23). I guess the steep learning curve and lack of tutorial turned off most players.
OH, I'd forgotten about it, but I played "Powerdolls" it was surprisingly fun, but could get very difficult, especially as I wasn't able to look up any sort of tactics guides for it. It was kind of like BattleTech.
Ironically enough, Android Assault was one of the first Sega CD games i ever played. A friend i knew in grade school had one and that was one of the games he had. I absolutely loved it and i have it in my own Sega CD library now.
Thanks for this! So many games to add to my list. What are the second and third games you show in the intro at 00:02 and 00:04? I didn't see them mentioned elsewhere in the video but they look awesome!
30:50 Was this video sponsored by the Interstellar Frungy League? In all seriousness thought, they're finally doing the next game in the star control series (not named star control though. Long story). The original creators formed a studio called "pistol shrimp" a little while ago to get started on the game. Might be worth checking out.
Sega Genesis Shadowrun's cover is the 1e TTRPG cover, by Larry Elmore, and it's one of the best RPG covers in existence. Without making it x-treem, it manages to show you: typical party composition, typical adventure, typical bad guys, and where you'll be when you're dealing with all three. It's pitch perfect.
I played the heck out of SNES Shadowrun. My brother and his friends played the Sega CD version. I got to the point where I would max out my firearms skill before I left the starting area (SNES). It was worth it to not worry about missing for the whole game.
I honestly wish that Armored Core had a game that was a combination of that Medabots game that is in the video, the Assault Suit games (a.k.a., Cybernator, Metal Warriors, etc.), and a Metroidvania for the GBA. Were that done right, that would have been an awesome game to play.
Oh man, in the intro I saw a clip of Run Sabre and I was really hoping you were going to talk about that game. My little sister and I used to play that when we were little, but we could never beat it. It was awesome because it was a 2player co-op game on the Snes, that we could both play simultaneously. Not a lot of games offered that capability but some did. It was fun we both enjoyed it, and even there was a boy and a girl main character so it was perfect
22:50 ...OMG... I love how you gave a shout-out to *_Dungeons & Dragons - Warriors of the Eternal Sun_* on the *_Sega Genesis:_* It's an awesome game. ...I never knew about *_Dungeons & Dragons - Order of the Griffon_* on the *_Turbografx-16,_* so TY for that !!! ...For, *_TG-16,_* I played a racing RPG called *_Final Lap Twin:_* It was kinda cool because you could save up to buy newer & better parts: Definitely Unique.
7:57 The older I get, the more I actually start to respect Japanese video game developers for being so unabashed in their usage of T&A to draw in younger players - not just because it was a winning strategy to ensure more sales but also because I'm sure it helped a generation of boys find appropriate outlets for their sexual urges. It's healthy for young boys to have a little bit of titillation in their media and I'm tired of feminists trying to say otherwise.
I’m a long time 16 bit PC gamer, and my favorite one of all time remains Hero’s Quest aka Quest for Glory 1 (EGA), but outside of that, Betrayal at Krondor, Phantasmagoria, Odell Down Under, Chip’s Challenge, Depth Charge, Archon: The Light and the Dark, Knight Games, Robotron: 2084, Dig-Dug, Burger Time, Digger, Cyberia, Full Throttle, Lemmings, Zaxxon, and many various DOS ninja games were what captured my childhood attention the most!!

@buggyismyrealnameiswear547 yep I actually plan to include the medabots rpg game in a future video
R is considered a black sheep of the series in Japan and by some an outright bad game for gameplay balancing reasons (what Japanese user reviewers call "part inflation") but I liked what I played of it & it's
the third mainline game (GBC) is being fan-patched right now (2 was skipped cuz of the remake being officially released back in the day) so you can try out the other 3 until that comes out. 1 is flawed but pretty short (especially for an RPG) while the GBA one is a massive commitment but might be my favorite turn-based RPG battle system of all time.
@RaymondoPerson oh I actually used to play the medabots GBA RPG back in the day so hopefully I'll still remember its intrincacies
I have no idea how I missed Lady Sia back in the day. That looks impressive.
glad I could help! :D

So far I didn't find Ruff N' Tumble's level design too bad, but it does have that euro flare... for better or worse.
Honestly, Ruff 'N' Tumble deserved an SNES/NSFC appearance as well.
@@paxhumana2015 yep true
Rom space aside, Order of the Griffen should have used the Turbografx super hi res mode. I mean, it's the kinda of game that fits perfect for it.
100% agreed
Order of the Griffon really should've gotten computer ports and been considered part of the D&D Gold Box series.
This guy's voice is the answer to "what if Schwarzenegger and Philip J Fry?"
You know what? That's the most original take I've heard regarding my voice. You get a pass
Fun fact: Ruff and Tumble are the names of the two protagonists in the PS1 game 40 Winks
Princess minerva looks like it's gonna be a blast. It's a shame no fan translations were found.

Amazing list! Nice to see Kyrandia get some love.
Kyrandia 2 and Dune 1 taught me the English language lol
@@st1ka Damn, that's so awesome. I always wanted to learn another language like that, but feels so intimidating. Dx

@@st1ka Ha! Good point. xD
@@st1ka - Dune was so excellent on Sega CD, it got me into the movies, the books, the other games, and Islam...why not?
Yep, it's so crazy to think that Kane also voiced Prince Brandon haha
@@druryhunter127 I honestly have no idea the reason, it could be that finding translaters for every language was simply too expensive
Princess Minerva might have some of the most impressive spritework on the SNES - horniness aside. I mean, let's be real to achieve such horny sprites on the SNES is no small feat.
Haha true
Good work, St1ka! I don't know the games, but they do look interesting.
This video even features purple chest wizards.😁
haha it does
St1ka, you really are impressive when you bring out these hidden gem videos. I'm a huge fan of rarely played games, and its rare for me to have even heard of more than a few titles per video.
Android Assault was a favorite for Sega CD for sure. The Shadowrun series is a lot of fun. I would love to play Princess Minerva.
I'd love to own Android Assault ^^
Android Assault/Bal-Arma (whatever its alternate name is) deserved an SNES/NSFC or Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port as well. I would also like to see a Ultimate Edition of Darius I and Darius II for the SNES/NSFC, too.
Medabots AX is such of an amazing gem of a game that I got both versions of the game and it's a modified version of Medarot G
It's a game that truly deserves more love
Firemen really caught my eye in the trailer. Great looking game
Hope you'll enjoy it! :D
Never thought i'd ever see anyone else who'd played "Phantom 2040". Bravo, thanks for covering that game!

Awesome video. Most of the games are not particularly interesting to me, but I looked at the description of each. The author has a talent for talking about retro games. Marvelos!
Thank you ^^
the Kyrandia games were always a favorite of mine, back in the day. Great that you added it to your selection!
That makes sense, but still sad that they did it.
@@st1ka yes... And i have a weird bais towards multilingualism

Yeah, I've noticed the SNES game had a bigger impact, but I think it's because the Sega version has a greater barrier to entry.
I wish had a 3DO. It's a really underrated system
A solid list of games. Two more to add:
_Crusader of Centy_ (or _Soleil_ in Europe) is a Mega Drive / Genesis Zelda-like where the main character gets familiars.
Oh wow, I didn't know Super Hydlide was on the MSX. which version is better?
@@st1ka The Mega Drive version both looks and sounds (slightly) better; then again it was released two years after the MSX version, so it's more of a remaster than a straight port.
@@Meximagician ah interesting!

Some good points there, even one good quality & often overlooked Amiga game!
If you want more, try:
X-Out, Disposable Hero (side scrolling shooters)
Banshee (vertically scrolling shooter, very bitmap bros -like graphics, but not)
Walker (kind of Operation Wolf with movable mech)
Virocop (dual stick shooter, that's also kind of platformer)
Super Stardust (best Asteroids clone, also DOS version available)
Slamtilt (by the other team, that could do quality pinball games)
oooh thank you for the recommendations :D
The Firemen 2 Pete & Danny on PS1 is great, it's in Japanese, but with a little effort and patience you can play the whole game. On Snes there is also another very similar firefighter game called Ignition Factor (from Jaleco). Other firefighter games are PS1's Rosco McQueen (from Psygnosis), in 2004 on PS2 there's Firefighter F.D. 18 (by Konami), and on PCs there's a firefighter RTS franchise called Emergency, which has several games.
There is also Firegirl: Hack`n Splash Rescue DX, a 2,5D rougelike platformer (multiplatform but only as download available).
I actually didn't know the Firemen had a sequel until recently.

I watched Phantom 2040. I remember being confused when the Phantom movie was based in an entirely different time period.
haha yeah, it was the same for me. I thought The Phantom was a futuristic hero too.
Both Genesis & SNES Shadowrun are great.
@@endymallorn Though I recall SNES's has the edge up in the fandom.
@@RyutheWeredragon Well, that’s in part because it’s basically canon to the metaplot of the novels and the books, given that it’s about Jake Armitage. Genesis is like a campaign run in the setting. It might be legitimate, it might not.

@@RyutheWeredragon Yeah the SNES version is the more popular one, but I think it's because the Sega version has a greater barrier to entry.

Heck, add some dither transparency to this Medabots and you could see it on the shop, right next o Panzer Dragoon!
Yeah I get that, the issue is, that I feel comparing the GBA to the Saturn or PS1 isn't fair. so I had to bump it down to the 16-bit gen

Shadowrun is such a fun game. I love it
Is it too early to complain about GBA being 32-bit?
Hehe. Yeah it's 32 bit, but I feel it's unfair to compare the GBA to the PS1 and Saturn for example ^^
The GBA may not have dedicated 3D hardware but "number-of-Ds" is a different metric than "number of bits". Bits represented way more than a 90s console marketing gimmick: number of onscreen colors, resolution, processing speed (well, how fast data can be processed, not how fast the CPU runs), amount of addressable (thus, available) memory, both in terms of RAM and ROM, etc... A 16-bit system cannot do what the GBA can, not without severe concessions
(Also worth mentioning the PS1 has a processor running 2x as fast as the GBA (about 1.50-1.75x for the Saturn), but the GBA runs over 5x faster than an SNES - the comparison seems even *more* unfair when comparing it with retro consoles...).

oh, interesting. I had only played the SNES version. How does the Amiga original differ?
@@st1ka in the SNES version they removed all the puzzle elements, it's just a run of the mill platformer (they also removed a lot of bosses).
