I might be mistaken, but I think for Battle Kid 1 you were playing the Japanese re-release which made some changes to reduce the difficulty. I'm pretty sure my version of Battle Kid 1 is a 1 hit death. Someone more knowledgeable can probably confirm though.
@@MattHughson yeah some people said something similar. If so, I have to say, the second game needs a similar update BADLY
Earned a sub. Great video! Love modern NES games!
The Stien's;Gate anime is actually based on a visual novel, which is the original version of the story. So the NES version is more of a demake.
One thing i dont like in these modern games, some games like Micro Mages, they made the main character so small, also the enimies, you cant even see yourself, if you play this on a retro pocket you dont see nothing.
As the pixel artist for Alwa's Awakening I want to say thanks for all the kind words. The Nes version has some graphical comprimises compared to the original, but we did add some extra content and I would argue it has a better pacing because of the 4:3 aspect ratio. I guess it comes down to personal preference which version is supperior :)
Oh, I should be the one thanking you. Thank you for the incredible game. I loved it to bits
@BG Pixlam, may you, as well as your company, please be so kind as to make ports of the game to other retro consoles, as well as to modern consoles, PC, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone, tablets, and iPad, please? Thank you.
I just bought the game + extra. I love this kind of game. Please keep it up! Thank you.
The game looks amazing. I didnt know the NES independent games scene was popping like this.
I've played this game (and its sequel) on pc, and I really recommend them (especially the first). @bgpixlarn6855, did you have anything to do with the '"word" or "password" puzzles? Cause those were insane!
A fun fact about Gaplus: much like the NES Jim Powers, this is actually an official demake of an arcade game. When Namco released their Namco Museum Archives titles, they had M2 make two NES style "demasters"; volume one got a surprisingly awesome version of Pac-Man Championship Edition, and volume 2 got this one of Gaplus.
Thank you for the extra context ^^
The Pac Man Championship Edition story goes even deeper. There's videos from nearly a decade ago showing a Japanese programmer's early version of it, but without the Namco N163 sound enhancements.
What we don't know is if that programmer now works for M2 and finished the game with them, or his work was bought out by Namco and reworked into the version we have now.
About Micro Mages: Most NES carts, especially newer games, make use of all the "newer" (in respect to the NES itself) chips and programming methods, especially banking (to allow for one to use more filesize than normal), to make better NES games. Morphcat went the other direction. They squashed their game into a tiny, _tiny_ 48kb, which is what the original NES carts were without any special trickery. They got a game THAT detailed, squeezed onto a 48kb original run NES cart.
Damn, that's pretty damn impressive
@@st1ka They have a video explaining the developement, it's a really good watch!
I'm genuinely surprised to hear about my NES soundtrack for Eyra being prefered over the 16-bit versions, it's usually the opposite I hear (and understandably so, tacha did a fantastic job with their 16-bit tracks).
I had to battle with the space limitations given by the programmer to fit all nine tracks in, which was only 8k(!!) and I also had to make some cuts and simplify the soundtrack further to accommodate for a rather outdated sound driver used for the NES version, but I was overall happy with the result, I've enjoyed doing the music and SFX for the game.
Thanks for checking out NES Eyra and the other games featured. :)
To be fair, I also love the 16-bit soundtrack, but I really enjoyed the NES one. I think you did an awesome job ^^
Kudos for your work! =)
I had the pleasure to play Micromages with other 3 strangers at Gamescom some years ago - that multiplayer is great - part of the fun is that each mage blocks the path of each other, so with 4 of them trying to go up, some delightful chaos takes place. It was a blast!
oh I cah imagine. It really feels like the sort of game that only gets better with friends
Great video! Some added context for Steins;Gate:
Steins;Gate was a visual novel (VN) first, and then an anime adaptation. With the Switch release of Steins;Gate Elite (basically the same game as the original, but uses images/video from the anime instead of the original art), Mages worked with M2 on making an NES version of the story. It was a pre-order bonus for the Switch release, but the Switch game is just an NES emulator! As such, the game data was extracted from that and is playable on any NES emulator!
Steins;Gate 8-Bit Adventure is an *extremely* truncated version of the Steins;Gate story, with some slight differences in the chain of events. It's kind of spoiler-ish for the main game, and honestly doesn't make a lot of sense if you don't already know the full story. It's really basic and short, since I think the intent was to design the game as if it came out during the FC/NES days.
aah thank you!
Some of these games seem to move incredibly well on screen, others to use the colour palette very skillfully... And some do both!
Looking forward to the video!
Thank you! Hope you'll enjoy it! :D
Alwas Awakening might just be the best pallet work I've ever seen in 8-bit. It's not the most complex, but it's just so clean and crisp, and everything pops with just the right amount of contrast.
Yep it's such a beautiful game despite being very simple on many technical levels.
I truly hope that NES sprite number / palette limitations faithfulness catches on with indie retro. Alwa's Awakening and Panzer Paladin were the first ones that made me notice it actually becoming a trend.
I think at this point it's safe to say I'll be playing NES games for the rest of my life
not a bad way to spend a life!
"Super easy, barely an inconvenience" 😂 Great Pitch Meeting reference!
Pitch meeting references are TIGHT
An excellent spread of homebrew games for the NES. I appreciate you taking the time to give your thoughts on every single one of them.
Thank you my dude ^^
i like that you made the artwork fit the pillarboxing for each game :)
Sometimes they require a lot of effort lol
The original version of Alwa's Awakening has slightly different screens (due to being in a widescreen ratio) and somewhat more colorful sprites due to not being limited by the NES hardware. The music and sound is identical as far as I can tell, likely originally made with Famitracker.
ah makes sense!
Your channel has been doing amazing. happy to see good content get recognized.
haha thank you! ^^
A great list. Found ones to keep a eye on.
glad I could help ^^
I have a couple NES homebrews if you wanna check em out. Carpet Shark, Plummet Challenge Game, and The Arm Wrestling Classic. Trailers and info can be found on my page. Can’t wait to see your video when it releases! Love to see what’s going on in the community 🙌🏻
ooh thank you for the tip
I’m not familiar with new NES games but I’m constantly trying to find hidden gems for the system. This was so awesome, thank you!!
glad I could help! :D
@@st1ka So are these NES games literally cartridges that work on an NES system or just mostly Steam based? I'm still new to this genre concept haha
@@Prodmullefcits real
35:48 it’s great seeing Sailor Jupiter continuing to fight evil even without her powers.
haha, yeah I remember thinking her design seemed familiar
The best and most based Sailor.
some truly impressive games out there. This video is worth every second of your time.
Thank you! Glad you liked it ^^
It's such a great feeling to see and hear NES games which is new but gives off a nostalgia vibes. Kudos to all the crazy 8 bit game nerds out there that is keeping the fire burning. Yesterday's kid gamers become today's 8 bit game creators. 😊
agreed! :D
Alma's Awakening is one of the best looking NES games I've ever seen, and it just shows how much people are pushing the hardware even today!
It's such a cool game
@St1ka Actually, Stein;Gate originated released as a Visual Novel game from 2009 in Japan. The TV series and Manga were based off from the Visual Novel. It's similar to like Pokémon was originated as a video game before the Anime adapted.
Also, that Galpus version was from Namco Museum Archives since you have not mentioned it in this video.
aaah thank you!
Good selection. I got really intriguing by the "Full Quiet" one there. 8-bit survivor horror game is something that you just have to play to believe it! HAHAHAHHA
It's a really imprrive game.
Thanks so much! Full Quiet from Retrotainment hits Switch, Xbox, Steam and NES Friday, July 7th if you are interested!
I'll have to check a few of these out, definitely not too shabby! Thanks for sharing!
glad I could help!
28:50 It's worth noting that Yuzo Koshiro not only founded and was (at least at the time) president of Ancient (which has made a few niche but critically acclaimed games), but also that he was never retired to begin with. Even if his most renowned work might be from the 90s, he's been doing game music since. He has arrangements in Smash Bros and does work for Indie games. He just loves making music and silly games. Worth following on twitter.
Oh that was just a setup for a joke
I really liked Full Quiet; great atmosphere, I have to say. There's just something about it that I enjoyed a lot, might be the combination of the maps with the gameplay. One game you didn't mention I also kinda liked was Garbage Pail Kids, which is an action platformer with fun designs. Overall, this is an interesting list, will have to check out a few more games from it!
Full quiet is SO good!
Thanks so much! Full Quiet releases on Switch, Xbox, Steam and NES Friday, July 7th! Retrotainment packed so much adventure into this game.
Thanks for the video, would never know most of these existed.
That's my aim, to inform people on lesser known games ^^
thanks for this compilation ^^
I aim to please! ^_^
Great list of games here! I really wish I jumped on Legend of Owlia when carts were still available. Jay and Silent Bob is one of the best beat em ups on the console. Glad I got that one! Rollie is a lot of fun too, I did a review on it a while back. The animation on that cutscene for the racing game is impressive but man, that game looks rough.
Making this video made me wish I had jumped on the bandwagon for all of these
Battle Kid did not originally have multiple hit health, it was one touch of death in its original form, the version you played is an updated version, (I can tell by the updated visual style in the cutscenes because I own an original Version one Cartridge) likely made for the switch port thats coming, that hasn't happened to the sequel yet so thats probably why it hasn't seen the changes
Yeah they added some other modes, probably people complaining it was too hard.
I bought battle kid at its release and I completed it 6thmonth ago (more than 10 years after purchase) and I confirm : it is a 1 hit/die game
Ah interesting, so I have an updated version
Yes Battle Kid 2 was actually much more forgiving by introducing the option to have 3 hit points.
The easiest Setting in the Original BK1 just had enemies have less hitpoints but you still had just 1HP
Overall I think BK2 was a better game although many Problems of the Original have been fixed in the updated Versions
@@TheBLBShow ah makes sense
Amazing video! Thanks for this one
Glad you liked it ^^
thanx for bringing these games games to attention!
i would like to add the game "Böbl" to the list. Fun metroidvania style game, but you play as a bubble moving through various terrain of single screens connected to form a pretty big world
An Alfonzo and Bob game?! How did I miss this!!
Thankfully I'm here to keep you posted :P
I haven't thought about Eskimo Bob in 20 years but can still remember the theme song!
Steins;Gate Anime is based on Steins;Gate visual novel for the 360. You don't have to watch the anime, but dare to play the original game (which is THE source, not anime/manga), and you'll never be the same... Just listening to that 8bit rendition of the tune gave me the creeps, you have no idea what you are missing. EL PSY CONGROO.
Yu-No is better >:)
is the 360 game translated or is it Japan only?
@@st1ka Stein's;Gate is available in English on the Vita, PS3, PS4 and Switch.
I love your videos, it's really obvious that you do this for and from passion
thank you! I try ^^
Love these dense multi game reviews!
glad to hear it! ^_^
Bobl and Spacegulls are also great NES games!
oooh I'l ladd them to the list
Spacegulls is pretty short; otherwise, it'll be up there with Micro Mages (same developers).
@@Robert_Shmigelsky I actually hadn't heard of that game before. clearly I need to check it out
Based video, based modern NES games
thank you ^^
An excellent video!! Great work!
thank you ^^
I clicked for the pixel babe, but now I'm excited for Alwa Awakens.
Alwa's Awakening is SO good
Mentioning mappers would be interesting. Because they are gamechangers and drastically change what game can push from famicom.
I actually have no idea which of these modern games (if any) use special helper chips :\
To be fair, Amazon's Running Diet is more a spinoff title for Gotta Protectors, which Ancient and Yuzo Koshiro worked on previously, and _definitely_ not a barely disguised fetish game. 😂
The original game itself though is actually a lot of fun, being a 4-player psuedo-tower defense game with a sweet soundtrack that you'd come to expect from Yuzo Koshiro.
hahah
Never heard about most of these games, thank you!
glad I could help!
Very cool video. Cheesecake thumbnail or not, that racing game's soundtrack really slaps.
But the one game in the list that has impressed me the most is Micro Mages. I bought it back when it first came out, and I still play it regularly. Two things about it:
1. After you beat the game, there's a hard mode. Same levels, but laid out differently, and some enemies have different or faster attacks. Beat that mode, and you get Hell Mode, even harder and very unforgiving. Continuing after a game over on that one sends back to the very start.
2. Amazingly, with all of that included, on top of the four player multi-player, the game's file size comes in around 40kb.
Morphcat Games did a video on their TH-cam channel explaining how they pulled it off. Very slick work on their part.
Micro Mages is incredible. Such a great game.
If I remember correctly the Steins Gate adventure game was a bonus game that came with the switch copy of Steins Gate. Im assuming somebody ported it to the NES which is pretty cool.
Oh how interesting, I had no idea.
@@st1ka Also Steins Gate was a visual novel first before they made an anime adaptation. It also has several endings centering around different characters
pela thumbnail eu já sei que o video vai ser bom
haha
Hehe...
hihi
@@theloverboy99 hoho
@@st1ka huhu... that was cool
Alfonzo's Artic Adventure is based on a 2000s Flash Animation series called Eskimo Bob. Which, yes, features Alfonzo. Ah, the memories.
yeah, I had no idea until some people started commenting the same. xD
excellent list, your channel is incredible,I discover many new and old games because of it,congratulations for the great work and for the very well made videos, may your channel grow more and more
thank you! ^^
goofy ahh thumbnail 💀
wtf
@@Randomgames97 bcuz her eyes are a higher resoulution than the rest of her, it looks funny
@@kbxthegamemaster06 It's true lmao
😂
It worked though
I feel inspired by this video... Truly in my bucket list to make an NES game... hopefully one my son can play
Oooh that's awesome
Alfonzo's really looks (and ESPECIALLY sounds) like a DOS game more than an NES one.
Ha, I remember playing these games when I was a kid. I used to rent them from the video store on fridays after school with my brother.
Every time I get your uploads recommended to me they end up being interesting when I finally get around to clicking on them. What the hell, I'm just gonna sub.
haha thank you
thank you for making this excellent video! Blade Busters and Project Blue are two im going to check out as soon as I can, though I was also surprised by Legend of Owlia too
i really hope other systems get this kind of homebrew love eventually as well
@@summerlaverdure Yeah, the Mega Drive and Gameboy are getting a love of homebrew love. Though I do feel the Gameboy is being held back by GB studio.
Too many game boy projects look too similar to each other.
@@st1ka i do feel the same way about GB studio, but i don't think the tool is to blame as much as it is people overestimating their creativity and passion when they find out how much work it is to make a game, even when the hard bits are done for you
i will also say as someone who loves XenoCrisis i DO believe in the megadrive scene and i try to keep up with that, lots of brilliant folks over there and no Fischer Price My First Game Engine over there either 🤣
@@summerlaverdure Yeah that's a good point
I can't wait to see speedruns for some of these!
Ooh very true
Good list, exactly what I was looking for after getting an Everdrive!
I hope you'll enjoy them ^^
Alwa's Awakening, Blade Buster, Astro Ninja Man and Micro Mages look more like indie games for modern platforms made in the style of NES games than like NES games. Even the colour palette don't seem to be the old one. Nice.
they're really well done
Bro you have no idea how much I love you for that 15 bucks reference xD
haha I just had to include it.
I will take the time and watch this fantastic video thank you St1ka.
Hope you'll enjoy it! ^^

Downloaded them all and man, the Gotta Protectors mini game was my favorite, also here's a trivia about Yuzo Koshiro, He was working for the soundtrack for Streets of Rage 4 at the time and he composed this one in a few days.
It's weird how games like Steins;Gate and Pacman Championship are recent creations meant to be bonuses in main current-gen games, like saying "Yes, It's possible, and always has been"
Right? It's So cool!
16:05 You reminded me about how the Steam version of this game was $15 on launch. They knew exactly what they were doing.
haha
Great Work As Always Man!!!
Thank you ^_^
Great Channel , cool to see new NES games
glad you liked it! :D
I am blowned up
I will try some of the games, this video is amazing
glad I could help ^^
Amazon's Running Diet... Didn't know sprites like that were possible in the NES.
That galaga game is ace.
Some good sounds/tunes coming from the iconic sound of the NES.
Gaplus is actually a legitimate part of the Galaga/Galaxian universe, the port of Gaplus is just a homebrew one...a good homebrew one, but a homebrew one nevertheless.
yeah I loved it :D
Gonna have to get a couple of these
have fun! :D
of course you needed a thumbnail like that, real good job there
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I want to make NES games. This would be my childhood dreams come true.
do it! Then I can feature you :D
the ports that they did on for the nes of some games are incredible, a game that I have on the switch is the one about gato roboto and whenever I wanted to play it on my retro consoles, the truth would be amazing a port of that game on nes, snes or megadrive
Oh I don't know that game. I'll check it out
Awesome video. Make one of these videos for the modern games for sega saturn
Definitely something I could look into
I'd love for you to do a series on 16 bit modern games
Oh I've done a video on modern Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games. Sadly, the Super Nintendo scene is still in its infancy.
The PC Engine has gotten some modern games, but not many AFAIK
Holy cow I never thought I'd see new Eskimo Bob content 😂 Used to watch it as a kid on newgrounds.
Haha
Full Quiet looks amazing!
it is! :D
Thanks so much! Full Quiet from Retrotainment hits Switch, Xbox, Steam and NES Friday, July 7th if you are interested!
Thumbnail got me too, well played

raven's gate is probably the best zelda-type nes game i've played. definitely worth checking out.
Whoever thought Jay and Silent bob deserved nothing less than a River City Ransom style game was an effing genius. Put that money in my hand!
Only 17k views? this video deserve to be broadcasted worldwide.
haha thank you! Hopefully it gets more ^^
Micro Mages is absolutely amazing. If they released this back in the day it would be a top seller.
It's SO good
OK, two more for you to look up:
1. Kira-Kira Star Knight. This apparently started as a game demo that never went anywhere, until years later a manga artist named RIKI and his programmer friend found the demo cart in the depths of Akihabara and decided to complete it. RIKI designed new graphics while his friend fixed the code. Then they kept going. It was never a complicated game (collect as many stars as possible as they fly past, in a reverse bullet hell situation), but they managed to included parallaxed backgrounds and twinkly stars that are as close as the Famicom can get to 3D modelled. Also, the soundtrack reads like a who's who list of classic 8-bit composers, because RIKI knew a lot of people in the industry... I've actually played this on both tablet and Famicom, because RIKI managed to get a physical edition released
2. Dragon Warrior: Begin a New Quest. This is a fan-made Dragon Quest game that a friend of mine made a few years ago. It's a definite homage to the original DQ trilogy, and plays better than many RPGs I've played.
thank you! I'll add them to my list! ^^
Love the channel man
thank you! ^^
I recognized Jay and Silent Bob as it is available on the Switch. Also Micro mages is available on Steam and it includes the rom file as well. Pretty neat stuff!
that's awesome! :D
Such an amazing video full of interesting NES games. Not only would I love to see a modern Super Mario NES game called Super Mario Adventure based off of the later Mario NES games similar to Mario Odyssey, but the girls, man. They were some of the “hottest” of the season. :D
Though, I personally disagree with the one thing that one guy said before the premiere. I’d prefer AAA over indie; it’s a pet peeve of mine for one to say otherwise since I know what they’re saying isn’t true… :/
yeah, some of those NES devs to be horny
i LOVE that games are still being made for the NES.. the NES, SNES and Playstation 1 were my all time favorite Consoles growing up.. "PC is my all time favorite though, cause of stuff like this. Indie Devs can literally bring me back to being a Kid with Homebrews like this!" L'abbaye Des Morts is my favorite in this list by far though. i actually was able to beat it. i wanted to get the Physical version, but i haven't been able too yet..
I hope to make a video similar to this one but focusing on the Game Boy soon :D
More like this, please!
I'll try ^^
I just wanted to check out some new NES games, and thought this might be a nice Roundup, but I really enjoy your commentary and opinion, consider this a subscription
I do disagree about Steins Gate, at least the graphics, the Sprites are rather unimpressive but I think the backgrounds and the faux 3D rendering is pretty impressive
Excelente vídeo!
Muito obrigado! :D
You should do one of these but instead of nes games gameboy games! Really enjoy the video! Keep it up!
Oh I plan to do one for the game boy eventually
whoa! I remember Alfonzo from "Eskimo Bob" - a series of short flash animations that were kind of popular in the days before youtube :O good to know SpoonyBard is still around!
I have to admit, I had never heard of Alfonzo before
Oh nice, I didn't know about some of these ones yet. :D

Very nice you but the titles in the banner. Your videos are top notch!
Thank you! I try ^^
Some interesting games for sure

You probably know about it, but there is a game in development for a few years now called Orange island. It releases late this year (hopefully) and it's a great looking RPG that might be one of the best new games for the NES!
yep! There are a lot of NES games I haven't covered yet, so I'd like to do a sequel video sometime in the future.
Great video. I think Owlia looks like a Startropics clone, which is a game Nintendo needs to revive.
that's a good point ^^
The Jim Power ost NES' rendition is amazing
right?! :D
