    My 15 Sonata 2.0T started to burn oil @ 110k. Did a B12 piston soak for 48hrs, adding more each 6-8 hours, turned crank nut 5 CW @ each B12 addition. Cranked engine without plugs to remove excess with towel over plug holes. Drained oil, top off oil, drove for an hour, drained super nasty oil again. Changed oil/filter. Hasn't consumed any oil now in 1 month so far was 1/2qt weekly.

    I have a 2012 hyundai i40 with the “Nu” 2.0 GDI engine that just hit 400K km, or around 250k miles, and it doesn’t burn a single drop of oil. I regularly floor it to try to avoid carbon buildup, but overall I haven’t had any major issues with it since it was new. I have changed the oil and filter every 4,000 miles since new. Maybe I’m just lucky, but it seems like most of the issues people have with these engines is caused by neglect.

    I have received good results with the BG EPR. This is the first time I have received any change using a snake oil product. To clarify, my stance on this isn’t just as easy as swapping the PCV valve. From my experience carbon buildup on the top of the pistons due to the GDI set up, which will not be fixed by just replacing the PCV valve. Running the fuel injector cleaner will not get the carbon buildup that is on the intake valves due to the GDI set up, which is why completing the induction service is very important.

      If it's for cleaning up carbon and or light sludge, you're for the most part safe, but if you don't take care of your engine and have lots of sludge or massive amounts of carbon, the particles can clog up the oil passages. This is based on what I have seen, so it's not set in stone .

Turns out the recall to "fix" it wasn't performed, even though records stated it was, and I was able to prove it. Hyundai replaced the motor with a brand new long block for free. Pretty respectable considering I am the second owner, and the warranty doesn't transfer to second (and future) owners. Also the 10 years on factory warranty had just expired. So, really impressed.

      However part of the lawsuit settlement Hyundai/Kia made was the extension of the warranty on the 2.4 engines-regardless of how many owners have had it-as long as the “knock software recall” has been preformed before it dies.

      @robtongue Almost sounds like Hyundai was trying to wiggle out of replacing the engine in it. Took our 16 Sonata 2.4 to have the knock sensor recall performed a couple of weeks after it initially came out. Fast forward to 5/21 it finally 💩 the bed at 109k. First they came back wanting oil change receipts-“looks dirty inside”. Do all of my own changes with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum W/Hyundai Filters every 3,500 miles. Couple of days later got a call from the dealer saying “oh you didn’t get the recall/update preformed-so they are denying the claim-mind you it’s the same dealer that performed the “recall”. Kindly reminded the service advisor THEY supposedly did it-and I had the paperwork to prove it. 3.5 months later they FINALLY got the new engine installed. After talking with the service manager-and him showing me the 20+ Hyundai/Kia vehicles on the lot awaiting new engines-that it was just Hyundai/Kia doing anything & everything they could to replace as few engines as possible-since the short blocks are covered for life due to the lawsuit settlement. Following day we dumped it for a new Camry-and haven’t looked back.

      @ripsrt6822...Yes, there were some Hyundai and Kia motors that qualified for a free motor replacement but for only a few model years. if you have a suspect Hyundai or Kia, you would need to verify if your particular car & model year were under the replacement claim.
      I just recently bought a used 2014 Hyundai Tucson for my Granddaughter's first car and this is when I first learned of the not-so-dependable GDI motors. I was very limited with how much money to spend and here in a rural area, there were not many used cars under $4000.00. The Tucson has a lifter clatter that sounds a lot like what this sonata sounds like, and I assumed the lifter just needed adjusting, so I bought it. But I learned that the lifters are not adjustable. It had 155,000 miles and I knew that that was getting towards the lifetime for the 2.0 motor. I needed the car to just last a couple of years....hope...hope....and then the financial situation would be a lot better to do something else for my Granddaughter: a newer and more dependable car.
      But....just last week, someone slammed into my Granddaughter and broke the left front wheel assembly and according to the insurance person, most likely totaled the car. So much for my Granddaughter's first car.

The speed limit is clearly posted for 25mph but to hit her so hard that both car's airbags activated and broke the wheel that she must have been going at least 35. But of course, the woman swears that she was not going over the speed limit...right..!!
      This 2014 Tucson was a real gem....except for the lifter clatter and high mileage. The interior was brand new looking almost showroom new. I put all new tires, new brake pads all around, new plugs. She only had it since June this Summer...real bummer. She is...was... working two part time jobs and had to have transportation. She graduates a year early this coming Spring. Her mom is taking medical classes and is not always available to take Granddaughter to her jobs. One of the jobs is only a mile away so she walked there many times before I got this car to her. She and her mom are trying to work out a schedule to where her mom will be able to take her to the 2nd job which is too far away to walk or ride a bicycle. She may have to let this 2nd job go.
      But we will persevere and somehow find her another used car that will be dependable and in our limited budget.

A 15 year old plus engine was getting replaced brand new under warranty. Cant remember the reason but basically came down to excessive oil consumption causing premature wear due to bad design i think.... either way the Australian consumers got new engines for free on a 15+ year old car

    If you used a funnel when pouring the cleaning solutions into the engine, you wouldn't spill all over. When removing it, put a folded paper towel or shop rag under the spout to catch the drips. Same with your oil funnel. This saves clean up time, and you don't have to spray brake cleaner all over.

This engine had the first campaign completed and still has the original misdesigned internal componenets. While I believe in the process you're completing it's not likely to help this engine as it's physically damaging itself internally due to it's design. I wouldn't hestiate to complete this service with an engine that has a red dipstick. Forgot to mention, because they've had the first campaign done they are entitled to an engine replacement at no cost.

They never really deep clean, they take away some of the surface stuff, but the really hard stuff that has been build up over the years and miles will remain... and it will soon build up like before.

  • @44hawk28
    @44hawk28 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Oil consumption is not always from rings. The PCV system can be horribly over engineered. You frequently need to put in an oil catch can on many of these engines so that it quits sucking oil through the intake. That way you can at least on occasion return the oil to the crankcase.

    • @luckysautomotive
      @luckysautomotive ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Ray please keep us posted on the results of this experiment.
    I was always told those gdi Hyundai engines burn oil because the gdi injectors dilute the oil and doesn't allow enough lubrication between rings and cylinder walls and causes scoring of the walls. Once the scoring starts the oil burning begins and there is nothing to do to fix the problem other than replacing the engine. So I'm curious to see what your experiment does.

    • @VanillaWahlberg
      @VanillaWahlberg 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's not a Hyundai specific thing, nor why they burn oil. Low compression piston rings and GDI dilute the oil, but, that's common on any GDI engine. It's why MPFI + GDI is a thing now.

    Back in the day we used to put in about a quart & a half of motor oil & 4 quarts of diesel fuel to clean the engine.

    The Hyundai’s/Kia’s that had a non-faulty engine - those things can take some insane abuse. I had one for 5 years (a 2013 Sonata with the 2.4 Theta II GDI). And even with all the copious recalls on those 6th Gen Sonatas, I loved mine, but I’ve also started seeing tons of them pop up in that 175k-250k mile range; still running strong.
