Silent Night Chapel Vlog - Christmas In Oberndorf

- Welcome to this, Silent Night Chapel Vlog.
Over the last few weeks, we have been on the search for, 'our' Christmas, and this week's vlog takes is on a detour from Salzburg, Austria, and to the beautiful and very Christmassy town of Oberndorf, just outside of Salzburg, Austria.
The Silent Night Chapel is a memorial chapel built on the site of the location where the world's favourite Christmas Carol, Silent Night was first performed on Christmas Eve, 1818.
In 1816, young priest, Joseph Mohr, wrote a 6 verse poem, to try and raise good feeling and hope during a time of great hardship.
Joseph Mohr was transferred to the church of St Nicholas, in the Austrian town of Oberndorf and had to have a Christmas Carol to perform on the Christmas Eve mass in 1818.
Joseph called upon his friend and music teacher, Franz Xaver Gruber who composed a melody and music to go with the poem, and the both of them performed Silent Night, or, Stille Nacht, as it is in German, with an acoustic guitar to accompany them, as the church organ had been damaged by mice.
During the 1890's, St Nicholas' Church became so damaged, not helped by regular flooding from the Salzach River and was replaced by a new church in 1906. In 1913, St Nicholas was demolished and only a few stones from the demolished church still stand there today.
In 1937, this memorial chapel, The Silent Night Memorial Chapel was completed and stands on the exact site where this special carol was first performed.
In this vlog, we show you everything you need to know if visiting the chapel yourself. We show how to get there, what facilities they have, where to eat and much more. We also tell the history and the story of this special building.
This is the final full vlog in our series of Searching For Christmas. A search which has taken us from North Wales to London, from Munich to Salzburg. It would be great if you would check out some of these videos, or any other of our vlogs.
This experience certainly did make us feel like we had found Christmas, and we would like to wish a very Happy Christmas or Festive Season, however you chose to celebrate (or not) these times.

Welcome to the official Postcard & A Pint TH-cam channel.
Postcard & A Pint was thought up by my partner, Rachel & myself, Wills one day while taking our daily 1 hour exercise during the lockdown of 2020. All of a sudden, we were spending more time together, not working 6 or 7 days a week in the arts industry, and binge watching travel programs, and we were actually really enjoying it, and it made us re-evaluate what was important in life for us. Now back to working 6 or 7 days a week again, with very little time off, our happy time is getting out there on our brief times off together and making short travel videos that we are now sharing with you. How a small chapel can have a big story. Beautiful. I'm with you on a Christmas Market which spreads that Christmas feeling. We get that in Aachen. I loved the sunset too that just spread over the sky towards the end of your day. Best wrap that ornament up well so it survives another year Wills, €5 wow!! Beautiful place and those Christmas decorations were lovely. The information that Silent Night is sung in the chapel in different languages brought back a memory of my choir singing days in high school. Our music teacher would have us sing Silent Night in the original German, then Italian as we had a large percentage of students from Italian backgrounds. Then one year noting how many Vietnamese students we had in the school, she decided we would sing a verse in Vietnamese. The teacher enlisted the help of a few Vietnamese speaking students to teach us how to pronounce the words correctly, let's just say Vietnamese pronunciation is hard! And judging from the wincing on the faces of our Vietnamese language tutors at our last practise session we never nailed it!

I love a good white Christmas. Funnily enough though the one time we've been in Europe for Christmas and we were in Seville, Spain. Not much snow there 😂 But having said that, not one week ago we were saying it didn't feel like Christmas because it had been so cold and wet. But temps back to 30 - 40 degrees as of Boxing Day, so christmassy it is 😁
This was great. You put these together so well. Edited beautifully. The music was great, and vaguely familiar. Fun facts that are obviously not made up are a bonus. I love that the first time Silent Night was played it was accompanied on guitar.
All in all I'd pay good money for this. Thank you. Oi! Change please! 50 pfennigs was the smallest I had.

Very helpful vlog, no better feeling of Christmas than a strip club! 😱 what a great story, mice and floods? Its a surprise Silent Night ever made the light of day.
