Staci, having you by my side as I am knitting is like having a friend to help; thank you so much for all the time you take to share your knowledge! you make the world a better place, with happy people knitting warm and beautiful thing for happy recipients. It takes time to prepare and organise yourself, edit the videos but I thought I'd let you know how much it is appreciated
I love knitting both socks at same time for all reasons you gave. I learned to always knit the stitches with the needle they are on i.e. I pull the sts to right and knit with the tail end. When one half is finished I turn work and proceed as before. At the end of each half a row my needles are straight, one holding both insteps and the other holding back of both. I never have an empty needle. But - to each his own! 😀
My favorite needles are Addis - both Addi Turbos, and Addi Clicks (an interchangeable needle set). The cords are just flexible enough, and the join between the cord and the needle is super smooth, and never catches the yarn. I highly recommend these needles!
Yes - you can use one long circular for this technique if you like. Since you've already knit sleeves this way, the process should be simple for you...but the cast-on will be a bit trickier. You may need to use an extra needle or stitch holder to help get your CO in place. Good luck!
I am so excited to try knitting two socks at one time, because I definitely suffer from Second Sock Syndrome. Thanks so much for yet another terrific video. I'm going to use this method for my next pair of socks.
Can I just say thank you very much. Just knitted my first pair of socks knitted at the very same time thanks to this video and pattern. Much, much easier than I thought it would be. Fab :)
I have knit several pairs of TAAT socks on 2 circulars. It's my favorite way to knit socks but I have some issues with directionality and I could never get either the cast-on correctly on the needles or work the heels in the correct order. I always ended up with one of the working yarns on the wrong end and had to move the stitches to DPNs to correct that and then move those stitches back to the circulars. Thank you for being so clear about what goes where and when. I've needed this video for years!
The really nice interchangeable needles are available from a couple of different companies. My favorites are Addi Clicks (sold at lots of different online stores) and Knit Picks Options (sold on the Knit Picks website). Good luck!
You totally inspire me. I watched this video and and knitting 2 socks at a time. So much easier than DPNs and yes, I did get second sock syndrome. Took 2x longer to knit the second sock. Your videos are very information and easy to understand. Thank you so much for taking the time to make your videos!
Thanks for this tutorial. I used it to knit the sleeves of my first cardigan project & will definitely use it when I tackle socks! Such a wonderful technique to help insure both sleeves/socks are done & the same size.
I just bought your pattern for this video and I'm so excited to get started! Thank-you for making these videos that coordinate with the pattern. It's a thoughtful way to help we, who are trying to figure out these new projects. I have wanted to knit socks for a long time but have been so intimidated. I now feel more confident with your help!! Thanks from a fellow Texan! I look forward to visiting your shop in Austin soon!
I really suggest that you work through my "Learn to Knit Socks" basic sock knitting video before you try these! This sock pattern is probably too advanced for people new to sock knitting. I have several sock knitting tutorials out, please let me know if you need help choosing one.
Thank you Staci! This was my first try on 2-socks at a time, and I succeeded! Because of the yarn I had to use a different pattern, but with your video that was not an issue. It went very smoothly. I love your video tutorials. Thanks :)
Thank you! I figured out the cast on correctly but was knitting with the wrong needle. It was hilarious, as you can imagine. I can usually conceptualize but knitting, as usual, challenges me. I love your tutorials. I still crackup over a comment you made on a beginning lesson when I first got started 3 years ago. It doesn't need to be waterproof hahaha.
@mos722ify Yes, I knit that cape. :) It is a free pattern by Drops Design called "115-11 Short poncho". I'm sorry I'm unable to provide a link to it in the comments, but you can find it online and via Ravelry.
OMG, never have I seen anything look so difficult. Must be because I'm a new knitter, because your tutorials have been a tremendous help to me. I got as far as the heel gusset, and had to turn it off bc I was actually getting anxious trying to follow. I was thinking of trying socks next, after i complete my spiral scarf, but I changed my mind. I guess i have to be far more advanced. Great advise on the addis and knit picks interchangeable sets though. Thanks for all your tutorials. I did subscr
Great video!!! I think I had an "aha" moment when you did the Kitchener stitch. I have struggled with this for a long time, but you made it clear for me. Thanks again for the marvelous videos. Makes me want to try making socks again.
Glad to know this , I was thinking of getting knit picks try it set, I looked at one called symphonie tonite and near dropped dead when I saw the price. 40 dollars for a circ, not in my life time. I just really needed you input about joins and now I know, so thank you again
@KEEN30 Yes - Addi Click Needles are just like Addi Turbos, except the whole interchangeable cord part. I have one of the first sets of Clicks that came out, and there is one slight difference with the older ones - the needle tips are about an inch longer than the fixed needles. But I believe that the newer Click sets have slightly shorter needle tips. Either way, they're all really nice needles, and my favorite.
Hi Darcy - the poncho on the mannequin isn't my pattern, but you can find it on Ravelry. I can't give you a direct link here in the comments, but if you go to Ravelry and search patterns for "115-11 Short poncho", you'll find it. :)
Excellent tutorial. This is the way I want to knit socks. Don’t see much on this. So thank you so much. I’ve done magic loop 2 socks. But this looks easier. Love knitting 2. It’s a head scratcher at the beginning but get easier as you advance through the knit. Recommend it
@bowtai1000 The length of the cord is really a personal preference - you should try different lengths and see what you like best. You can go as low as 24" or as high as 40"...I prefer 32".
You are amazing! Wish I had found this video BEFORE I knitted my first sock. LOL. Well now off to do my second sock and I will definately use this technique for my next pair. Thank you so very much for sharing your art and knowledge..:)
@khamil731 You can do that, but it's just asking for trouble. :) The yarn is twisted in one direction all the way through the skein, and if you pull from both ends, you're likely to end up with a very tangled mess before you get very far.
That was a great video! I've been wanting to learn how to knit two socks at the same time for a while. Great instruction and easy to follow. Thank you so much!
@busyhappyknitter Yes - socks can be made toe-up using magic loop (one circular needle), or with two circular needles. I may shoot a tutorial on this in the future. :)
I find this way using two circulars is so much easier than using magic loop, I really struggled when using magic loop I was endlessly fighting with curling and twisting cords now I use ChiaoGoo cords and two circulars best decision I ever made.
@tubasoldier3 Took me a minute to get my mind around that, but yes, I think it would work. The issue I see with this is that there would be potential for substantial gaps in the socks between the needles, as one needle would always be loose and hanging on the work. Other than that, I believe the method would work.
@rydiecyj Getting things set up is a little complicated, but there are many people who swear that this is the very best way to knit socks. So it gets easier after the first few rounds.
@1HappyNut Yes - this pattern works for any tiny tube you want to knit, although it would get very cumbersome on the fingers of gloves. I also recommend magic loop. TH-cam won't let me link to it here, but I have another video tutorial on knitting magic loop socks, which is with just one circular needle.
@Melatina77 No, you could still use this technique, even if you're knitting a left and a right mitten. But most mitten patterns (like mine) don't have a L and R. They are exactly the same and interchangeable between the two hands.
All of the details for this pattern (including yarn, needles, etc) are available on my website. Just follow the link in the video description field, just below the video. For this pattern, I recommend circular needles that are at least 24" in length. Hope that helps!
Would it be easier to knit each needle as if it were the only needle? For example, on the front, use the right needle and bring it around to knit off of the left needle on the same cable, then do the same for the back. I think this would eliminate having the cable turn between the back and front of the first sock, and make the heel flap easier to do as well.
@marlibpretty There are two sets of interchangeable needles that I really like - both Addi Clicks, and Knit Picks. They're both really nice, with smooth cords and joins.
I really really appreciate all your work to present this video..YOU make it look dooable..however I need to digest it all to wrap my little brain around it all lol Thanks for your hard work.
Trinda - Thank you for the note. My website is up and running fine, but if you are using Avast antivirus software, you will see a false-positive virus warning. There is no virus, and I have tried and tried to get the company to remove the warning, to no avail. You can still get the pattern by bypassing my website, and buying it directly through Ravelry. I have just provided a link in the video description field, just below the video.
@verypinkknits Thanks, I wanted someone else to think through it too, to see if I missed anything! I love your tutorials, they are very clear and helpful. I like also that sometimes you goof up, then you show us how to fix it!
Thank you VeryPink Knits for your advice. I had thought that would be a good size but there were some recommendations for the size 40" which sounded a little large. I'll look for your Ravelry pattern; I love that site and am over there all the time. Also have told others who are "yarnaholics" to take a look. Thanks again
see you at ravelry 2. did u check out the web page. I enjoy knitting for babies and other people. Baby items can be made up and sent directly to your favorite hospital. I have about 4 blankets ready to send off.
Would this method work for mittens/gloves too? I guess it would have to be for mittens or gloves worked from the cuff up. Glove fingers? Thanks for posting!
@sradefarras The sweater I'm wearing is called "Sitcom Chic", and it is available as a free pattern on the Knitty website. (Sorry, I'm unable to leave you a direct link here in the comments.)
It looks to me as if you could substitute for the temporary extra set of rounds a couple of double points. I hope that works because I don't have two sets of size 5 and it would be nice to keep the size the same even though it would only be case on round that would have different sizes and wouldn't make any difference. The cast on is kind of difficult to follow but with a little pausing and diagramming I think I'll make head and tails of it. Excellent video!
If you click the link just below the video, you'll be taken to my website where all of the details about this project are available. You want to use circular needles that are at least 24" in length.
@Ashleysh2 Without seeing your work first hand, I'm going to guess that yes - your cast on is probably loose. It should start to look better after you work a few rounds. :)
Thanks for wonderful tutorials. I wish you'd used 2 balls of diff colors but I managed to keep up. I'm stopping to practice on both DPNs & 2 needles at a time up to the heel flap. Then I'll come back and pick up @ heel turnsl. I HAVE to learn on DPNs also, but sure I probably won't go back to DPNs after I get used to using 2 needles (laugh). The notes and illustrations I made for myself, I use two different color ink pens. So that takes the place of you using 2 diff color balls.
I know sleeves aren't socks, but I knit two sleeves using a 50 inch circular. Could I use that for these as well instead of two circulars? My sleeves went very fast and they matched, I want my socks to match as well but the two circulars seem a tad overwhelming.
Wow, this was very informative. I really learned a lot. I am going to try this. One question, would this only work on two exact items because mittens have thumbs differently on each one. Would that get too compilicated?
Omg! Thanks for doing a video else the written instructions will be too confusing to follow as I’m a visual learner. I just started knitting socks in magic loop. One for now haha. This method will be very interesting for me to get used too. We shall see what happens. Love all your videos.
Hi Staci, I have a question for you.... Are the Addi Clicks just like the Addi Turbos (except the interchangable cords, I mean)? Thanks for your answer
I've not seen knitting with 2 circular needles done this way. I was taught that you always knit with the same two tips from each circular needle, so half your sock stays on needle A and the other half of your sock stays on needle B. Your method looks like it requires longer circular needles once you get both socks completely on one needle How long of needles do you recommend?
@Maikl19980705 Вы можете перевести свои видео в текст на любом языке, включая русский. Просто нажмите "CC" кнопки в нижней части видео, а также выбрать язык.
wouldn't it be best to knit the socks with the same circular needle? so that way you're not transferring stitches from one circular to another circular
This video is truly fantastic. I really appreciate your guidance! I just started my socks last night :) I am using a pattern from ravelry but the techniques you show here. I am having a problem with the edge of the sock where I moved half a cast on to the other needle (ie the side where the yarn is NOT connect tot he ball) - it is just SUPER loose. Is that because my cast on was too lose?
I don't get the second sock syndrome BUT I never knit 2 socks the same size. The 2d sock always ends up being much more loose than the 1st one and sometimes the difference is quite big... so big that I have to knit a 3rd one. Thanks for thise video!
Does the yarn pull from the left or right on a skein of yarn? It looks like you're pulling from the right, but you said left. Was the yarn label facing out? Or is the video mirrored?
+NotAhjumma - are you talking about when you're starting a new skein of yarn? In skeined yarn, if the label is printed top-to-bottom, the yarn pulls from the top. If the label is printed left-to-right, the yarn pulls from the left side.
NEVER thought about the orientation of the yarn as it pertains to the label-just knew that sometimes it was more twisted than others. Thank you, Staci!!!
I'm about to start this pattern so of course I am previewing the video so I know what to do. I have never done socks on 2 needles though I figured you would knit the stitches on 1 needle back on that same needle and same with other cable needle, though I saw you completely knit them off one of them when you started. I am all confused now! Do you then completely knit them off the other one and work around like that?
what brand of circs are you using, I am pondering what ones to buy, I cant stand the boye or the Deinise that I have. Denise cords are to thick for me, and the boye needles keep coming apart when I knit.
I was wondering. If the second sock is a mirror image of the first don't I need to start that 2nd sock on purl first (if the first sock started with knit stitches)?
Fuad Taghiyev - this video doesn't follow the pattern in a book, but a downloadable pattern here: verypink.com/2011/03/11/2-socks-at-a-time-on-2-circulars/
I am learning the two a time with two circulars method. I Thus far I have knitted about 2.5 inches on one side which always seems to be on the correct orientation and knittable of a 2k, 2P cable. i.e., The wrists for a pair of fingerless gloves... The first time I got turned around I found my way... Now I have been struggling to find my way back without success. I keep knitting the same side and unable to get back to the correct orientation for the second wrist.
This pattern looks great, and having a video to use step-by-step is exactly what I need! However, I was hoping to use this pattern to create socks with a finer weight yarn for a man's sock. Is this possible? Can I just up the number of stitches and go from there, or would you recommend something different? Thanks!!
+Erin Logan - Most of my patterns and tutorials are designed to teach the skills and techniques you need to knit that item (socks, sweaters, etc.). Once you've finished a tutorial, you have what you need to know to move on to all kinds of similar patterns, available in all sizes and yarn weights. I'm sorry - you can't really alter a sock pattern to match a new gauge or yarn weight...you pretty much have to start over from scratch with a new pattern.
I love the shawl behind you. What do you call it...a pullover shawl? Do you sell the pattern for it? By the way, your video tutorials are the best! I can't thank you enough. I've bought a couple of your sock patterns and it's like having a private knitting lesson.

Good luck!
I love how you divided up the yarn. I haven't seen this method before. Brilliant!
You are a genius and I thank you for making my mitten-knitting so much easier, not to mention more finishable!
@AlohaCow I got my ball winder at a local yarn shop, but they are available for a good price on the Knit Picks website.
Excellent instructions. The set up was very clear to understand. I’m so glad I found this tutorial.
I really suggest that you work through my "Learn to Knit Socks" basic sock knitting video before you try these! This sock pattern is probably too advanced for people new to sock knitting. I have several sock knitting tutorials out, please let me know if you need help choosing one.
I'm addicted to the second sock syndrome...unfortunately. What a great idea...2 circulars! Thanks very much.
Thank you Staci! This was my first try on 2-socks at a time, and I succeeded! Because of the yarn I had to use a different pattern, but with your video that was not an issue. It went very smoothly. I love your video tutorials. Thanks :)
It would really be the same to knit any number of socks at once, once you see how it's worked. I'd love to hear how many you get going at once!
I love this method! It makes them more identical and there is less anxiety about that other sock!
Yes - that is possible, and a different technique for knitting socks that deserves it's own video. :) I'll get on that.
OMG, never have I seen anything look so difficult. Must be because I'm a new knitter, because your tutorials have been a tremendous help to me. Thank you for the yarn pull tip!! I always have trouble figuring out which side the center pull is on! Absolutely helpful!!
Great video!!! I think I had an "aha" moment when you did the Kitchener stitch. I have struggled with this for a long time, but you made it clear for me. Thanks again for the marvelous videos. Makes me want to try making socks again.

Thank you . You are the best in giving instructions for these socks. I'm going to start on a pair and I think I'll be able to do them. Happy knitting.
You make it easy to understand. Thank you for the tutorial. I have been wanting to learn for over a year! I'm so excited to start.
The answer to that question kind of depends on where you are in the sock...are you working from the written pattern, or from the video alone?
I find this way using two circulars is so much easier than using magic loop, I really struggled when using magic loop I was endlessly fighting with curling and twisting cords now I use ChiaoGoo cords and two circulars best decision I ever made.
@tubasoldier3 Took me a minute to get my mind around that, but yes, I think it would work.
Just wanted to say thank you for the great tutorial. Am already working this with ease. Keep the great tutorials coming.
@AlohaCow I use all different brands, but I stick to 100% wool or a wool blend.
I love your videos! They are clear instructions, good lighting--just really well done!!!
Thank you so much! Looking forward to more!! Katherine
That for the skein tail trick! That is going to come is so handy! You are so amazing!
@marlibpretty There are two sets of interchangeable needles that I really like - both Addi Clicks, and Knit Picks. They're both really nice, with smooth cords and joins.
I really really appreciate all your work to present this video..YOU make it look dooable..however I need to digest it all to wrap my little brain around it all lol
Thanks for your hard work.
Trinda - Thank you for the note. My website is up and running fine, but if you are using Avast antivirus software, you will see a false-positive virus warning. There is no virus, and I have tried and tried to get the company to remove the warning, to no avail.

I believe this is the same yarn I used in the gloves tutorial - Lion Brand Wool Ease in color "Blue Mist".
@verypinkknits Thanks, I wanted someone else to think through it too, to see if I missed anything! I love your tutorials, they are very clear and helpful. I like also that sometimes you goof up, then you show us how to fix it!

Glove fingers?
Thanks for posting!
@debbioverweg Hi Debbie - I recommend using circular needles at least 24" long, but longer cords are recommended. In the video, I'm using 32" cords.
Thanks!!!
@sradefarras The sweater I'm wearing is called "Sitcom Chic", and it is available as a free pattern on the Knitty website. (Sorry, I'm unable to leave you a direct link here in the comments.)
Thanks for your quick reply on the gloves. I think I'll go out and get some wool today....what colour are the socks??
@lyric142 That's a good guess! I do sometimes use Paton's Classic Wool in my videos. But this time I believe I'm using Lion Brand Wool Ease.
It looks to me as if you could substitute for the temporary extra set of rounds a couple of double points. Yes - Addi Turbo circular needles are my favorite.
@verypinkknits i found it in knitty and in Ravelry. thanks sooo much! you're great!
The Knit Picks website sells very nice ball winders like mine, at very reasonable prices.
The Knitting Goddess strikes again....excellent. post.
Thanks for wonderful tutorials. I wish you'd used 2 balls of diff colors but I managed to keep up. I'm stopping to practice on both DPNs & 2 needles at a time up to the heel flap. this is very helpful. i'll be making my first pair of socks soon, and i really don't want to do them one at a time. thanks!
nice sweater! would love to purchase your pattern for that sweater you're wearing! you're really good at teaching us, thanks!
It can be worked either way.
Thanks for you quick answer. I'm new to magic loop, but it looks like the way to go. Can't wait to try it! Thank you for your video!
I knit my first sock so now I am ready to knit two socks at the same time!

2:45 in is everything. What was the brand of that yarn again?? I love her.
wouldn't it be best to knit the socks with the same circular needle? so that way you're not transferring stitches from one circular to another circular
+VeryPink Knits Yes! Your clarification helps! Thank you!
NEVER thought about the orientation of the yarn as it pertains to the label-just knew that sometimes it was more twisted than others. Thank you, Staci!!!
@dankimforde It's about the same thing, but the cast on is much more difficult.
Does this technique work for any cast on , or just the long tail ?
what type of yarn do you use for socks most of the time?
I'm about to start this pattern so of course I am previewing the video so I know what to do. I have never done socks on 2 needles though I figured you would knit the stitches on 1 needle back on that same needle and same with other cable needle, though I saw you completely knit them off one of them when you started. I am all confused now! Do you then completely knit them off the other one and work around like that?
It works either way...I demonstrate the way that I do it.
Thank you for your videos, very clear and easy to follow. What length of cord do you recommend for 2 socks at a time for needle size 1 - 2?
I have the same question!
what brand of circs are you using, I am pondering what ones to buy, I cant stand the boye or the Deinise that I have. Denise cords are to thick for me, and the boye needles keep coming apart when I knit.
I was wondering. If the second sock is a mirror image of the first don't I need to start that 2nd sock on purl first (if the first sock started with knit stitches)?
Socks aren't mirror images of each other. There is no shaping or anything to make it necessary to make mirror-image socks, the are identical.
Quick question - did you use Paton's Classic Wool? It looks like a ball of it that I have.
Thank you @verypink, I will, and congrats to you @vivsgran on completing your first sock, you should be proud. :)
Could you please advise book which you are using for socks knitting?
Fuad Taghiyev - this video doesn't follow the pattern in a book, but a downloadable pattern here:

Thanks a lot! :)
I haven't either. I wonder if she is left-handed?
I am learning the two a time with two circulars method. I
Thus far I have knitted about 2.5 inches on one side which always seems to be on the correct orientation and knittable of a 2k, 2P cable. i.e., The wrists for a pair of fingerless gloves...
The first time I got turned around I found my way...
Now I have been struggling to find my way back without success.
I keep knitting the same side and unable to get back to the correct orientation for the second wrist.
I would also love to see a video on that technique. Thanks in advance!!
@boualalphanh You're welcome! :)
I think the Toe-Up Magic Loop pattern might be a better bet for me! Do you think that would help?
Erin Logan - this pattern includes instructions for both worsted and sock weight yarns: verypink.com/2014/06/04/two-socks-at-a-time-toe-up-magic-loop/
I'm even watching that video now! I think this will be great. Thank you so much for your help!
I love the shawl behind you. What do you call it...a pullover shawl? Do you sell the pattern for it? By the way, your video tutorials are the best! I can't thank you enough. I've bought a couple of your sock patterns and it's like having a private knitting lesson.
