Stacy, this heel technique is so genius. I wrote it all down and this is the only way I knit a heel ever since. It’s so much easier than other techniques and so beautiful. I bet, if you would make a special video on just this technique you would make a lot of people happy!

Hey, so I was at a party that devolved into watching Very Pink Knits.. and as someone who never touched knitting needles before i was a little zoned out. so i figured,. every comments section of youtube is pretty toxic, this'll be interesting to see how someone could be toxic about socks. i gotta say, your viewers are all super nice, and helpful to eachother. Its amazing to see a youtube community thats incredibly nice to each other. Thats super refreshing to see. thanks! faith in humanity

It's great, isn't it! Knitter's are pretty nice folks, makes me want to work hard and do a good job with helping them with their knitting questions. Thanks for the comment. :)

Thanks so much for this video! I learned both magic loop and knitting 2-at-a-time techniques from it, and knit a pair of socks right away with it. I can now kiss second sock syndrome good-bye forever! Yay!!!
In fact, it's really hard not to binge-watch the videos on your channel - you are a fantastic teacher, giving just enough clear instructions without boring us with needless dead space while we watch you knit. Really, really well done. Keep up the great work!

I live in Norway and my grandmother has always been a sock knitter. She taught me to knit socks about 30 years ago and this is the technique she used. I think this is the most comon way to do heels in Norway. There is a version where you stitch the heel up at the end instead of picking up stitches, but the pick up method is much more comon.

Previously, I only ever knit one pair of socks for my 4 year old grandson. They were full of mistakes, and I wouldn't have knit the second sock if I didn't need something small to knit on the plane to visit him! I really wanted to learn TAAT socks, bought a book, ripped out multiple times, gave up in frustration, and then found your video. I bought the pattern and started. The German Twist cast on alone was worth the price! Ripped out once, then it clicked. Your videos have helped my knitting for several years, but this tutorial is just perfect! I've finished the cuffs, and I just watched the heel segment. The whole time I was thinking "I get it! I can do this!" Thank you so much!

I'm joining a sock yarn club and read how many knitters will knit one sock and then not get to the other. So I checked your site here and found your tutorial and will incorporate it into every sock I knit. Thanks so much. You are my "go to" for all things I have not yet encountered in my knitting experience.

Just stopping by to thank you for this video. I am a beginner at knitting. I never thought I would stray away from crocheting for many years. So happy I did. I purchased your pattern last winter and now working on the socks. Just ready to start the heel. I chose the worsted weight to begin the first pair of socks and also knitted the cuff longer for my hubby. I just love the idea of knitting two socks together as I just know deep down that second sock would sit in the basket forever! Your pattern is so easy to follow. I printed the pattern and have stored it in my forever binder. I am sure I will use your pattern for many years to come. Thank you so much.

This video is AMAZING!! I have just the problem you describe when it comes to getting motivated to knit the second sock, so this is a blessing! You did ask to be made aware if anyone had come across the heel technique before, and the answer is yes. The Vogue sock Knitting book uses the same. That's actually how I learned to make socks (and believe me, I wish I had this tutorial when I started, because I learned using the sock yarn first...lolz) Thank you again, Knitting Master Yoda!!!!

Dave Lawson - it's sort of a personal preference thing...I personally like 32" circs for most things like hats, and 40" circs for regular socks (on tiny needles with sock yarn). As I type this out, I realize it doesn't make much sense, totally a personal preference. :)

I'm Greek and we do a lot of slippers. My slippers are called "Saddle Back Heel". I came up with it when doing a saddle shoulder sweater and a bright light turned on. I hated folding the slippers and sewing them. They kept trying to fall off. Although a saddle sleeve usually involves eating up a stitch on both sides, this is a saddle join. It very well could be a European thing. I'll look around. Great minds think alike, Staci. Beautiful, beautiful videos.

Yes, the second half of the SSK stitch is ktbl, but the first half (twisting each stitch individually) is very important. It's the twist plus the ktbl that gives the SSK it's left lean.

Hi Carol - I went to go measure the heel on these socks, and I no longer have either pair (worsted or fingering), they were both given as gifts. It's easy to figure out in the exact gauge you're knitting. First, measure your row gauge. Then look at the proper chart for the socks you're knitting, and look at the number of rows. Take half the number of rows in the chart, and divide it by your row gauge. You will want to start the heel when you are that measurement short of the desired length.

  • @verypinkknits

Quick....well for me - the english thrower - it's slow by most standards. My other project will be to try and learn your knit method -- but I always seem to have a project I want done for someone - and I've not been willing to accept the learning curve :) Thanks for the excellent videos - the instructions are really well delivered. If you could combine this with a mixed drink at the end -- perhaps delivered in another language :)

The heel in this sock is new and unique to this sock pattern, and I demonstrate the whole process. If you're knitting another sock pattern and looking for a demonstration of the heel, I have other sock tutorials that demonstrate traditional heels (short rows with wraps and turns, and heel flaps). If you visit my website, I have a whole category for socks, with 8 different sock tutorials. Hope that helps!

thank you for your tutorials and patterns I find them very helpful. I am first a crocheter and secondarily a knitter and so your tutorials have just helped me tremendously. I have been following your pattern as well as this video tutorial and I’m starting to increase on the heel. your video shows that the first time that you pick up a stitch to increase you talk about the marker being in the first stitch and you knitting into the second stitch (v) but you only have those two rows as the example. the pattern is different and has multiple rows after that of course as the paper pattern describes I have more rows and don’t know if I’m supposed to pick up the stitch in the V immediately above the marker still or do I pick up one closer to the rows where I’m knitting? like 3 or 4 v’s above that? If I knit into the second row after the stitch marker it’s going to leave a small gap, i’m not sure what to do I glanced through the comments to see if anybody else had had problems with this but didn’t see any so I’m sorry if it’s a repeat question.

Sweaty Palm Tip: My hands always sweat, not only under bright photography lights. Wet hands can make knitting difficult. I bought a can of Arrid XX Dry Aerosol Antiperspirant. (The Blue Can) A quick wash of the hands first, then dry, shake the can well, spray a fine mist at a distance. Allow it to air dry. If there is any excess powder after air drying you can lightly brush it off with a dry paper towel. Your hands will not sweat. This is also great for feet that sweat.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Each of my sock patterns/tutorials is different, and the pattern for one won't really work with the tutorial for another. If you're an experienced and confident knitter, you can give it a try - but they weren't designed to work that way. But here is the good news - once you master the techniques I teach in one, you have the skills you need to knit that way (magic loop, for example) with any other pattern you encounter.

I love this tutorial and the fabulous new heel. If I'm doing toe up socks, what would be the best way to do it? I am doing a different pattern with magic loop.

I love your videos! I checked on your link for the needles and they are beautiful but they are soooooo expensive! One set of double point needles start at $45! That is 5 little double point needles for $45!

How do you get back to the magic loop starting postotion for the second sock.

Question: is ssk the same thing as knitting two together through the back loop? It looks the same except I don't slip the stitches and then reinsert the needle.

Thanks so much. Actually I took them off the magic loop and did the heel with dbl pointed and put them back on to complete.
One more question. I started the heel as per the pattern and got half way through the chart and it looked like it was going to turn way too short? Should I just trust the pattern

If you're following the pattern row by row, you're fine. Trust the pattern. :)

Is there an optimum length for the circular needle? I tried this with a 24" needle and I find the needle might be too short.

Sorry Staci, what I meant was, I started on the front needle to knit the heel and when I finished, I was on the purl side of the heel. I am in the starting position with my needles facing to the right but, the heel is now facing me and my working yarn is on the inside of the front needle if the front needle is facing me like when I started the heel. I guess I could do another knit row on the both socks then I think I would have to take my socks off the needles to turn it around so my working yarn would be on the back needle in the starting position like it was before I started the heel. Us this what you would do. When you made your socks did they not end up on the purl side of the heel on the front needle when you finished your socks? I followed your instruction /video so I know I didn't make a mistake. I was just checking with you to make sure I knit these socks correctly because with this tiny sock yarn, it's hard to take out stitches and I have spent a lot of time knitting these socks, just want to make sure before I continue. Thank you Staci

Oh - this is what I've been waiting for! I was waiting for someone to tell me they've seen this heel before, thank you! But...I've Googled it, and I don't see it. Is it an old fashioned heel? Do you know of a book where it might be found? Sorry to bombard you, but I'd like to publicly tip my hat to the first inventor of this heel. :)

I learned this cast-on; it was called "Old Norwegian Cast-On". (Sounds nicer than "twisted".)

Hi! I love your video and also bought your pattern and am enjoying making my socks. I am working on the heel and am a little confused about picking up stitiches on the increase rows. When I PU & K one stitch at end of Row 11, am I picking up the stitch closest to my row and working down toward the marked stitch as my final PU stitch on row 20? On the video, it just says to pick up the stitch above the marked stitch, and that isn't clear to me. I know you have abbreviated the video to not show the entire heel work, so just want to confirm. I have already ripped out my work once! Thanks.

+Debbie Ludington - yes, you pick up the V (stitch) closest to your needle, and continue to work towards the marker in subsequent rows.

I have a question in the same area. What does this mean, "continue to work toward the marked stitch in subsequent rows"? this seems to be how the two sides of the heel get joined back up, but I can't see how it's done. The combination of written instructions combined with video is really helpful, but I wish you'd done more than two rows on this heel business, or had a pop-out video explaining it more.
