    I DID IT! This hat represents so many firsts for me: first time doing a cable cast-on, first time making ear flaps, first time doing cables, first time making alterations to a pattern to be a perfect fit for me! Thank you! I bought the Kindle version of the pattern. I wish more designers did Kindle versions so thank you!!!

    *THANK YOU*! This is *EXACTLY* what I'm looking for! I've been going crazy for 2 days trying to figure out how to incorporate earlflaps using the long tail cast-on for a cable hat pattern I'm designing. This is perfect!

    That's a good question. Yes - you can use a DPN instead of a cable needle to work the cables (and I've done this myself in a pinch), but it's easier to use a cable needle. Cable needles are designed to hang on to the stitches without slipping out, therefore allowing you to let go of the cable needle and work the other stitches, then pick it up again when you need it. Hope that helps!

    Because of a few of your videos I am strand knitting. I am also thinking about making gloves I am no longer afraid of the thumb gusset. I am also excited to make an ear flap hat for my 3 year old daughter. I love your video!

    @csndeb There isn't really a "gap" to close up, but there is a space created because the stitches are being pulled from one spot to another. You just want to watch your tension - not too loose, not too tight. If you see a little gap there it will most likely disappear when you wash and block your finished hat (especially if you've used wool or a wool blend). Don't pick up any extra stitches - not necessary.

    As usual, learned so much from you video. Thanks so much, you are like the good neighbor knitting expert next door, I feel I can run to you with any project. I know all will become clear and I can tackle any new technique with no problem.

    @mac9926 Yes - you can use a chunky yarn instead of holding worsted yarn double-stranded. Whatever gives you the correct gauge, which is 20 stitches over 4 inches in 2x2 rib.

    I'm 12 years old and your such a inspiration to me. School is coming up and earflap caps are very popular along with leg warmers. I'm not experienced with patterns and all I want to do is something simple. Is there a simple starters pattern that I can start with? And do you think you can make lessons that show people how to make leg warmers? Thank you so much!

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @11Wizardry9911 The yarn is held double-thick throughout the pattern, and it gives a chunkier look to the cables and rib. Bigger needles are needed for that.

    If you're knitting your first cap, I suggest you follow a pattern that will give you exact instructions. If you're asking about the very last step, you cut the yarn (leaving yourself about a six-inch tail for weaving in later), and pull that end through the last loop. Then you pull that end to tighten.

    @therockette19 I'm afraid that gauge is EVERYTHING when it comes to knitting a pattern, and a different gauge means an entirely different pattern. I encourage you to change needle sizes until you get the gauge called for in the pattern. Otherwise, the amount of math necessary to modify to the new gauge means you'll need a completely reworked pattern.

    I like how you have a double strand ball. Is there any special technique to winding to get the ball to stream as well as yours does? That would be a nice tutorial. I have not wound my own ball yet on a winder. I would like to see this double strand ball tutorial.

    Cee Gee - the sweater I'm wearing in this video is not my pattern, but it is a free pattern that you can find here: www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring03/PATTsitcomchic.htmlwww.knitty.com/ISSUEspring03/PATTsitcomchic.html

    If you're just learning to knit, I have two tutorials out that I suggest you try - the first is called "Learn to Knit Your First Scarf", and the other is called "Learn to Knit Your First Cap". Beyond that, my tutorials will guide you through the tricky parts. (Sorry I can't give you direct links here in the comments, but you can search my channel or visit my website.)

    @suzanne9656 I don't have a tutorial specifically on adding earflaps once the hat is finished, but I have a video showing the technique for how you'd do that. It's called "Knitting Help - Pick up and Knit" and you can find it by searching on my channel page. (Sorry, TH-cam won't let me give you a direct link here in the comments.)

    I like the design and i would like to knit this for my son, but as a very beginner I can't really follow you, your knitting is very quick and how do you make the ear laps?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      All of the necessary instructions are in the written pattern, which is available here:

      VeryPink Knits thank you for replying, however like I said I am a very beginner and do not understand patterns, but thanks anyway.

      If you are new to knitting and still learning to read patterns, I suggest starting at a much easier hat, like this one, Learn to Knit Your First Cap: verypink.com/2011/04/07/learn-to-knit-your-first-cap/

    When you do the cable, after you've moved the stitches off to the cable needle, do you knit the "gap" pulling the gap closed and then knit the stitches off the needle, or do you knit it loosely and have somewhat of a gap where the missing stitches are? (not sure I'm clear on what I'm asking)

  • @MarsellaFyngold
    @MarsellaFyngold 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Heyy! Question for you! Because I'm 1) too broke to buy the pattern and 2) free styling it and experimenting with something else anyways (vs. doing cables and therefore wouldnt exactly be following the pattern anyways) I was wondering if you could spill the beans on the ratio/math behind casting on an earflap hat? Are the front and back equal? Or would more stitches in the front fit most people better?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are designing a pattern now, figuring it out is all part of the fun! I have nearly 50 years of knitting under my belt to design this cabled earflap hat. If you're just getting started, there is an adventure ahead of you, full of math, knitting, ripping out, and reknitting. Or you could just buy the inexpensive pattern I've carefully designed, that comes with a free video tutorial.

    I love it 😍 .. How can I knit this for a toddler (4 yeas old) ?

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Changing the size in a pattern like that isn't a quick or easy thing, I recommend finding a similar hat pattern that you like on Ravelry in a toddler size, and following that.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    This video is made to accompany a written pattern, and all of the info you need to knit these caps is in the written pattern. (In the videos, I really just demonstrate the techniques, without going through every step of the pattern.) If you would like to follow along with your own copy of the pattern, you can follow the link I've provided in the video description, just below the video. Good luck!

    I have the pattern for the 1898 hat and it calls for 180 yards worsted. Does anyone know how many yards the original pattern actually uses? The worsted Wool Of The Andes yarn I have is 110 yards.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a different pattern than this tutorial - I recommend contacting the designer of that pattern with your questions.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @therockette19 You're welcome! Please let me know if you have any questions as you work through the pattern.

  • @verypinkknits
    @verypinkknits  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @angelatohxj Yes - the written pattern includes all the info you need. These videos are made to demonstrate the techniques used, but the pattern gives you the details. The link to purchase and instantly download the pattern is in the video description. :)

    @forgetunot Are you working from the written pattern? If so, please drop me a note at my real email address (website is in the pattern), and I'll help you through this confusing part. :)

  • @monicaschroeder5143

    there is an ad AND captions over the video so you can't see.

    • @verypinkknits
      @verypinkknits  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Monica Schroeder - you can close the ad, and/or turn off the captions if any part of those are covering what you need to see in the video. If you're using the captions, you can drag them to a different part of the screen, if necessary.
