    I think the majority of riders appreciate tests or comparisons just like this. Less scientific crazy detail and more real-world back to back tests between two different bikes. Best takeaway is just what you said. For most riders it really doesn’t make that big of a difference in times. Ride what you have if you love it and stop stressing over parts, this or that aspect of geometry and just enjoy the ride!

    • @TheJewelin
      @TheJewelin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Totally agree. However, I just bought Pole Evolink only because of the geometry(and looks) as I'm taller rider and although my old bike was perfect and I enjoyed it a ton, the evolink is so much more comfortable to ride. So the geometry is important for some riders like me. Maybe not because of how much faster it is supposed to be, but because of the fit and comfort.

    • @noahwilson2719

      František Taraba I think what you have done is the right way to go about it and good reasoning for decision making. So many these days seem to focus and obsess too much on geometry and how it will effect this or that in their riding. Congrats on the new ride!!

      Looking at the way his mate 'Tom' was pulling away in the first test - I would loved to have seen the pecking order reversed maybe a week later - Big bike first etc. (looks like fitness was an issue to me - backing up the following morning might have biased the true results as well). Always going to be 'what if we did it like this' scenarios though . Just my thoughts . Cheers

    Ryan - I have. theory... When you're on the smaller bike it's probably easier and more natural to get your weight over the front of the bike. This means you will get more traction in the front and cornering will feel better - Now it may just be camera angle and such, but when you're on the big bike your arms seem to be straight a lot of the time....which to me would indicate that you're hanging too far back and therefore less traction in the front, which causes you to be a little more conservative. I would look into your weight distribution on the bike and see if you can get more centred..... focus on bringing your weight a little more forward on the big bike..... have fun with it and see if that makes a difference. Cheers...Alan.

      @@micheandmikey yeah at 6' 4" you'd likely be on on XL so a Large might be an option - you could always try some bars with a little rise in them maybe? But yes - weighting the wheels more evenly is very helpful. A lot of people lean back in corners.... a difficult, but worthy, habit to break. 👍🏼

    I think these tests do show exactly what I would expect. Climbing is going to be easier on a smaller, lighter, trail bike than an enduro. Descending a bit better on the enduro. I think if you had a more sustained technical descent with chunky roots and rocks, you would have seen a bigger advantage from the enduro, specially with the bigger wheels.
    I think the telling part was that on one of the descents you said it felt more fun on the smaller bike. This is how I feel about 27 vs 29" wheels. I know the 29's are faster but they feel less fun. And I'm continually torn about going to an enduro bike. I think because when we look back at what we ride our thoughts focus on the technical sections, being the memorable ones, so of course we think an enduro would make it go smoother - and it would, but the reality is it's usually a small portion of the trails we actually do ride.

    Man, from the vid the Ibis 4 looked scary af. You were pitched so far forward, it didn’t look like you had any room for error. And that to me is the real reason for the longer, slacker bikes. At 48 and not looking to crash anymore, the extra safety net that the longer, slacker bikes provide is a godsend when I’m pushing it in high speed gnar, or pushing my limits with size of a jump or drop, or as my form gets off a bit from exhaustion at the end of my ride. The longer slacker bikes just say, “don’t worry, I got you.” Whereas the smaller bikes say, “eat this tree mfer- what you doing thinking you could hit that- serves you right.” Lol.

I’m a little confused as to why so many compassion videos are about finding out what bike is fastest, the fastest bike is not the best bike. The best bike is what fits you, what’s fun to ride, what you like and what makes you smile. Being fast is so far down list of important items, ride a bike that fits your style and where you ride. At the end of the ride it’s all about enjoying the sport.

    • @kemptonrobert
      @kemptonrobert 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's partly because you cant really measure fun. Hitting the same trail with more speed is usually more fun for a lot of us, as it's tied into a lot of fun factors such as riding confidence, air time, and opens up new gaps and obstacles. That, and if you are buying a new bike, why not buy the one that will help you ride faster?

    • @gsportgeorge
      @gsportgeorge 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kemptonrobert that's fine if the faster bike is just faster, but that simple straight-line speed is usually bought at the expense of the things that make a bike fun. It's great for manufacturers. Long low bikes are easy to make. Getting nice short stays on a bike and keeping reasonable tyre clearance is much more difficult, but makes for a bike you can bunnyhop at a moments notice instead of needing to book it in in advance by compressing the fork etc.

    Those trails probably favored the smaller dimensions and wheel size of the Mojo, on a run of the mill blue trail I wouldn't expect much of a difference between a trail bike and an enduro bike. Go on something much steeper and gnarlier and that is where the enduro bike is going to shine. Translation, being overbiked isn't necessarily faster.

    • @foldinghomealone
      @foldinghomealone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. On the other hand, being overbiked doesn't make you slower, either. So, always go overbiked

    • @benjaminschuldt6211
      @benjaminschuldt6211 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The thing is that most riders ARE riding run of the mill blue trails on their bikes so this is an apt comparison for the average rider. For steeper terrain and bigger features of course the gnarred out enduro bike is going to be faster - that's the point of them.

Sounds like if you ride a large, long bike, it's a lot of fun to try a smaller frame that feels more nimble. And vice versa I bet as well.

    As a trek remedy 9.8 owner I can attest to the fun that the geo of something like the remedy or Mojo can provide. With the trek having a bit more travel (160/150) it would likely bridge the gap between the two bikes you tested here. I've found the smaller 27.5 bikes to be a lot more controllable, and ride better on jumps, really tight downhill tech, etc. IMO, bigger isn't always better, as has been the trend lately. At some point you end up with a bike that's just too darn big.

  • @Candesce
    @Candesce 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the only thing frame size really counts for is comfort, and the only thing long travel counts for is racing double black diamond trails. I care about both! So I go for the bike that's a bit longer and bigger. It is very hard to ride at race speed down a double black diamond trail without suspension to help out.
    The only thing I really really care about for geo is the saddle to handlebar distance, and I try to keep that the same between all my bikes regardless of any other measurement. Head angle, reach, etc. is just flavour after that measurement.

    Maybe we weren't that wrong back in late nineties early two thousands when we opted for smaller bikes. But I love my Ripmo V1 in large (I'm 182cm). My last bike was a 26 inched Giant Reign in what should be a bit too small size for me, and I loved that bike as well. Guess I just love riding, and I love the the end of the day, that's what counts.

    Just shows that you're a very consistent rider no matter what bike you're on. Plus you can have good days and bad days. And there's also a bit of a randomness factor into which lines you might take here and there and of course track conditions from one day to the next. Fun video though! I'll have to get out to Canmore and try the trails. I've so far just ridden a bunch of West Bragg Creak trails.

    I'm a fan of riding the correct size bike. This is unrelated to your testing, but FWIW it reminds me of how annoying it is when some 5'10" medium-build bike reviewer insists on testing a bike designed for someone 3 inches taller and heavier, all in the name of "I like larger bikes". And then that reviewer proceeds to trash talk the review bike's handling characteristics.

    Ride what you’ve got is a good outlook. I am the only one of all my friends who is on an entry level hardtail. Everyone else is on a carbon full sus but at the end of the day I’ve ridden all but a few features on the trails we ride. Only avoiding a few drops, gaps, and stuff I really don’t think I would be able to make work with the limited grip that I have.

      Darragh I’m talking an entry level xc hardtail against full on enduro bikes. I’m probably going to get a strive because the last time I rode a full sus 150/160 29er I was able to carry speed everywhere and jump more consistently than on my hardtail.

    The extra suspension on the ripmo doesn't make it any faster of a ride (depending on the trail), but I'm betting the mojo took more work to make up for the lack of suspension travel. Pumping and pedaling both get better results with less suspension. In most situations I'd go lean on the suspension. It's worth the extra work IMO.

    Great vid! I am actually not that surprised. Next you should see how your times are different on a high end aggressive hardtail compared to your full squish (similar grade components). I have found that I am pretty much as fast on my aggressive 27.5 130mm hardtail as I am on my 29er 140/150mm trail bike on most trails. Sure if it is extra rowdy, the FS is faster and offers more control, comfort and confidence, but since both have great geometry with similar length, HA and reach, they both rip.

    I sort of noticed the same thing myself after riding a Giant trance 1 size M for a couple seasons and then going to a Pole Evolink 140 size L. I didn't make any personal records for a long time and still haven't on some sections. It's the turns that make the biggest time difference i feel like, harder to do them fast on a big bike and harder to get back to speed if you mess it up a bit. Anyways, riding is fun! :)

    If you would have chosen a more brutal, chunky, face paced, proper enduro track, then the odds of the Ripmo outshining the Mojo would have been higher .... at least that's my hypothesis. If you were to race an EWS on the 2, the differences would probably be greater.
    It indeed shows that the rider is the most important factor.
