    We all understand that an eBike will give you extra power, but how long does that power last? How many miles, how many feet of climbing? Every rider and every trail is different, but for this video I took the IBIS Oso from 100% charge to 0%. 150 pound rider + 750 watt hour battery + lots of miles and climbing.

    Cadence on an e-bike is actually important to pay attention to. A cadence of 80-100 is where the motor is most efficient and will provide you the most "assist". This was told to me by an e-bike dealer at Outerbike Bentonville last year when I was test riding one and based on experience the bike does like you spinning like your a roadie.

    • @michalwiktorow2188
      @michalwiktorow2188 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That depends on the motor, Bosch published that best is near 77 and above but less than 100. Brose would be around 80-90rpm. we can say between 77-100 is the best range for e-biking. Upper threshold will burn your legs :) and be great cardio training, imagine doing that for 3h straight, with breathing fresh air and looking at the nice views.

    • @fredman1085
      @fredman1085 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      "A cadence of 80-100 is where the motor is...." It's also been proven to be more efficient for the human body. There's a reason professional racers do pedal along a 50 rpm and they pedal 90 rpm or above. The mtb motors do negate this somewhat but spinning is better for you than grinding.

    • @chaosreunited
      @chaosreunited ปีที่แล้ว

      sooo what is Cadence? I'm not familiar with the word and looking at dictionary doesnt explain much in a motor/ebike sense haha. if someone could please explain =D

    • @fredman1085
      @fredman1085 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chaosreunited Cadence is how fast you’re pedaling. If you have a timer on your bike, count how many times one of your pedals does a full rotation for six seconds and multiply this by 10. It will only
      Be a rough estimate but it’s only six seconds to keep track of and you can do it easily. I usually start when the timer hits a four and the. Count until it hits the next even ten figure. Like start at 24 and count until it hits 30. Of course the longer you can count, the more accurate your cadence or RPM will be.

    Another word of advise to your grabbing easier gears for the climbs. I found that if I try to keep it in the middle power range and POWER through the pedals you put a ton of strain on the chain and cassette. I learned that getting into easier gears for the climbs and not changing gears under a load greatly reduced how many chains i was breaking and the rear cassete. You still get an amazing workout. Plus it helps with your standard bike endurance. I person on a horse the other day stated i was cheating and my reply was "we both are riding assisted platforms and isnt it enjoyable". You need an EBIKE club because not a lot of people in my crew to ride with.

    Nice video. I bought my Trek Rail-7 last March of this year and I love it. It's reinvigorated my riding. Of course, I'm a little older than you, by 23 years, and between asthma and the beginnings of arthritis in my knees, e-bike was really my only option of continuing to mtb. Believe me, I resisted for years but I eventually gave in. And for those young bucks who think we should all quit rather than switch to an e-bike, I'd like to hear you say that when you're in your sixties and still want to ride but simply can't enjoy it due to the pain.
    I also do like climbing so I actually try to ride everything in Eco mode and only switch to Tour when I'm truly exhausted or out of shape, like I am now, I've barely ridden since August due to house projects:) A big but of course is I don't think most of my parks have those giant hills like you were doing. If they did, I'd certainly power up too.
    As far as using more power the faster you go or the more climbing you do, as you stated, of course. I find it kind of sad that people can't figure this out. If you're driving your car at 90 mph or 55 mph, which do you think will get better mileage? The same physics are involved whether the engine is combustion, electric, or flesh. Faster burns more calories, hence will tire you out faster. People can walk a LOT further than they can run. Some of this is training your muscles to run but even then, trained runners can walk much further than they could run.

    One of my favorite things about ebikes is that when you ride in a group of other ebikers the disparity between riders is much less. Instead of waiting at the top of a climb for anywhere from 15min to 45min for the slowest rider to get to the top it’s more like 5min or less.
    You can go riding with a friend who doesn’t go out as much and still stay together during the ride for the most part. On days when you’re alone and need to get a ride in but don’t have all day, you can still get in a 15 mile ride in an hour or less. It’s pretty great!

It now enables me to get back out with the mtb club I have been in for 28 years. I have a Specialized Carbon SL comp. It weighs 38lb. I found I didn't need boost. I made trail setting the top setting. Eco second and the first setting even less help which is the one I use the most. Long climbs 2nd setting. Short very steep the third setting. 33 miles in the Lake District and 40% left on the batter. I'm getting my confidence back on steep rocky trails. Still loving your enthusiasm and videos.

  • @DISABLED12-7
    @DISABLED12-7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We charge batteries by forcing electricity through them in the "opposite" direction. An "empty" battery doesn't provide much resistance as it's own voltage is low so the charger can drive current through it easily to charge it. As the charge in the battery pack gets higher, the voltage from the charger needed to overcome the battery's own voltage increases. This lower difference of voltage between the charger and battery leads to a smaller current flowing through the circuit leading to lower charge rate.
    This is a gross oversimplification. There are some other things going on too. :)

However, the have to come up with a sturdy motor cover soon, because the same issue happened in an other test ride of the bike. This is due to the very low bottom bracket height compared to other similar travel e bikes, so bumping up the travel and a stronger motor cover would solve this issue

    Battery tips - if possible, don’t recharge battery immediately after a ride - allow the chemistry to rest a couple hrs before recharge. Likewise, don’t charge to 100% unless you’re gonna ride soon (12-24hrs). Finally once you know what’s needed for your rides, charge only up to 80-90% and your battery health will last a lot longer (true for any big battery - mowers, blowers, etc.).

And then on the flip, Loam Ranger is saying how easy it makes everything. If what you're saying is true, paying 10k for a bike that is just 30lbs heavier wouldn't be worth the cost. I'm also not impressed with the range. 25 miles is decent with that elevation, but I was thinking like Hut to Hut from Durango is around 30-35 miles a day so this thing wouldn't make it. I think it comes down to erring on the side of caution. I think They think that if you let e-bikes in then people will start riding e-motorcycles on the trails on the trails. You know, give them an inch - they'll take a mile. And yes, they could specify "class 1" as permitted, but then they'd have to train the authorities in the differences and it's just easier to say "no" to all e-bikes.

    IMO, E-bikes are here to stay, and will likely become more prominent in all aspects of biking, probably even pro competitions at some point. All those who are die hard mountain bikers who want to ride for as much of their life as possible. How you gonna get to the top when when you're 60? 70? 80?(if we're lucky) not saying everyone will be out of shape at those ages, but most likely will be. That being said, I'm young(29), I'm relatively new to MTB, and found out today I weigh double of what Brian does, lol. I gotta drop some of these pounds, so I'm gonna stay on human powered. But if E-bikes come down in price enough, I'd jump on board!

    The motor shuts off at 4% because this bike has the lights powered by the motor. A european (or maybe just german) law says when the bike powers the lights, they have to give 2h of light after the motor Power is drained. Normally this is about 10%.
    Thats why only the dealer can switch your light ports on the motor on/off

      Yes, you're correct. For ppl with really ultra-high endurance + muscle to fat ration - eBike - does exactly the same, extends their abilities even further. I mean: they will go much further than unfit (ale e-MTB can dose support wisely) and can go much more elevation. eMTB keep however them involved, there is no worries that you'll loose your fitness, you will just ride ridiculously long trips or multiple laps, progressing quicker etc.

    I think the power calculation should mainly involve you. Answer this question: How fast do you need to get to X, and how much do you want to ride using power assist? My bet is that you will last longer than the battery in any case, so aim to conserve your strength.

    This bike was really easy to assemble th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

    I hope your content doesn’t become overly e-bike focused. I enjoy your trips and rides as they are. E-bikes are great too but I not only respect your rides I respect the effort involved in doing these rides.
    On a side note; 25 miles is not much at all. It is a bit disappointing. And if you are in shape you won’t feel anything the next day! I learned that in the Spanish pyranees. Yesterday I did 35miles with 3500ft in 3hours on my normal enduro, long travel bike and today I feel it. I do think e-bikes health in terms of cardio vascular workouts.
    Anyway, please keep riding and doing what you do. But I beg you not to cram e-bike stuff down the channel. Cheers

    I appreciate you testing this so we all know what happens! However, I would recommend no one pushes their battery to 0% on any device, bike, car, etc. Any time a battery hits a low voltage like what's seen at 0% it can damage the battery cell and reduce the battery health overall. Keep batteries between 20% and 80% if you want it to last a long time. If you're storing the battery for a long time, leave it around 50% and check on it once a month to top it back up to 50%.

    • @bkxc
      @bkxc  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most definitely! Just had to see what would happen!

    • @DQridesbikes
      @DQridesbikes ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not bad to take it to 0% every once in a while. I think the shimano system is smart enough to not do damage when battery is below 0%. I'm with you on the storage though.

    • @streddaz
      @streddaz ปีที่แล้ว

      As David Q said there's protection built in with most brands that reduce the power as the battery gets close to zero, plus it's not technically zero, there's a bit of charge left for the exact reason to protect the battery. That said, it is better to keep the battery between 20% and 80% more the majority of your rides.

    • @MckWells
      @MckWells ปีที่แล้ว

      @@streddaz Well yeah, 0% is another way of saying roughly 3.0v per cell and there is usually a computer/micro controller that will reduce the output of the battery below 20%. Once you reach those thresholds you're stressing the cells. Using a full cycle, 100% down to 0%, is a lot of stress on the battery no matter what systems are in place. Frequent usage like that and the battery will degrade more than if it was kept in that sweet spot. You can keep 100% battery health for years if you use a battery with care. Consider it food for thought, for anyone reading this, when purchasing a bike in the $5k+ range. Just like a fuel tank in a car has a small reserve, running it low will stress the fuel pump motor and could cause premature damage, proper care is more effective than a system to reduce damage.

    Deer are born 50/50 male to female, but the males tend to die faster as the males fight each other, take more risks, and generally live a more solitary life which puts them at more risk from predators, so that’s why more females are seen than males.

    Hey Brian, when are you installing a SRAM AXS on this eBike?

  • @richardwernick4930
    @richardwernick4930 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lithium-ion doesn't like being fully discharged. So try to avoid draining your batteries below about 25% when possible. If unavoidable, charge it back up to above 25% as soon as possible, so the time spent near empty is minimized. It will prolong the battery life. Unlike most other battery types (especially lead acid), lithium-ion batteries do not like being stored at high charge levels. Charging and then storing them above 80% hastens capacity loss. So charge the battery to 80% or a bit less. Apple computer figured this out, and their computer charges will hold off a total capacity charging periodically when the system is not in heavy use.

  • @jasoncapell
    @jasoncapell ปีที่แล้ว

    So the question is: does this compare to other e-bikes? Is this in the "average" as far as range? For me personally, an e-bike would only be worth it if it would allow me to do some epics like Super Strawberry of all of Mt Wilson down here in SoCal. I also wonder what the impact is on range if you're towing a bob for trailwork?

    • @fredman1085
      @fredman1085 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      " an e-bike would only be worth it if it would allow me to do some epics like Super Strawberry of all of Mt Wilson down here in SoCal." A lot of that would depend on your riding style and power mode(s) you use and how much in each mode. You'll get a ton of mileage out of Eco mode, less so the further up the assist mode you go. Also, as he stated, the harder you push, the more battery is used. As well, as how much you weight, is the terrain - sandy, muddy, hard packed. Battery size is also important for ride length.
      There are a ton of variables to consider.

    • @fredman1085
      @fredman1085 ปีที่แล้ว

      "A cadence of 80-100 is where the motor is" Funny you mention this but I find it difficult to keep the front down if I'm starting from a standstill on a steep climb, you push to get going but then the motor over compensates and throws the front end up. I have to remember to dial down the power just to get going. This is just my personal experience.
