I honestly feel like a combination of the techniques in this episode and the previous one would be the most promising, like having major modifications like new limbs and muzzles be made via surgically added lab grown parts and having smaller things like a full body of fur be added by gene therapy!! :P
I am actually building a protogen head, with a embedded vr-headset. Will have complete face tracking! And you can actually play vr with it (when you play vr or any other game with it, the display will also be displayed on the head aswell). It can track without basestation, has a coloured passthrew mode and tracks emotions. It will take some time tho, until it is finished…

This will complicate hunting laws, at bare minimum a new subsection for the tagging of "therapised" animals and how they function into the local ecosystems.
What if instead of having furry body parts implanted, we just made a suit made of organic matter? I mean think about it, a living suit that you would have to give some sort of energy to in order to live that would look completely realistic and be as mobile as your physical body. Essentially, the suit would be another layer of skin on top of your already existing skin and be removable. I wouldn't recommend killing the cell though, as they would smell like a dead dog and attract flies. You could turn it into some kind of pelt, but the downside would be that it would be extremely hot and also lose some of the tightness that a suit made of skin would have.

Bit of a stupid nitpick from an admitted lit nerd: "The Island of Doctor Moreau" is about the titular doctor using surgery to give ANIMALS humanoid anatomy.... and the results are incredibly disturbing.
I'd just be happy to turn into a regular animal. I think it might be fun to be a deer or a lioness. A natural one. Use this kind of tech to help people who need it like people who need new kidneys or livers. Where would they get the DNA from said tigers and other animals? What if your fursona is a species that does not exist in reality?
