  • In this meta-Spectrum Street Epistemology conversation in San Juan, Peter Boghossian asks six participants to consider the claim, “Some beliefs should never be questioned.” Religious beliefs hold a unique position among the participants’ responses. Topics include subjective vs. objective definitions of truth, how the longevity of a belief affects its strength, and how to assess the legitimacy of information. At the end, Peter answers a question about his view of religion.

I'm Catholic. I wouldn't have abandoned my beliefs to become an agnostic and then an atheist if I hadn't questioned it. But I questioned my atheism and returned to my faith after doing more studies to correctly understand it. No belief should be out of bounds for questioning. A weak idea fears criticism. People often misconstrue constructive criticism as adversarial act, when it can actually help the person clarify and better understand their beliefs. And even if the beliefs fail to withstand criticism, one becomes courageous when one ditches it instead of following one's emotions.

These are all true for ME. But if we take a step further back, these are also true for everyone that encounters me. These things amongst many others, cannot change and will always remain true no matter where on earth I go, what year it is and even when I'm no longer on earth. Of course these scenarios are unique to me and they are true, but it requires a giant leap to say these are just "my truths". They remain the same whether I believe them or not. We need to be careful with how we use the word truth. It loses its meaning (dare I say true meaning!) when it's equated with the word belief. This opens a door for things to become watered down and chaotic. If it's a belief, then we need to say that it's a belief. It's also important to know that beyond our ability to make observations and interpretations (which I do agree can sometimes change), there is still a realm where absolute truth resides, but that's for another discussion! For now, perhaps we could use better suited phrases like: my opinion, my understanding, my journey, my perspective or my story, rather than my truth.

I've given up on the need to feel good about myself, and this is freeing. My faith provides a moral standard that I can't uphold, and it makes me continually confront my moral failures. Still, I get comfort knowing that God loves me regardless of my moral failures, and this gives me hope and freedom from the monster of feeling good about myself.

A follow up question would be: do you have the foundational mental abilities to be able to actually question a belief?
Most people who think they're questioning something actually just end up engaging in motivational reasoning instead, for instance. E.G:
      1. Someone who questions their gender, and ends up becoming trans, may not have formed an opinion on reality.
      2. A religious person who questions their faith, and ends up becoming more faithful, may not have formed an opinion on reality.

@@La0boucheredo you have the ability or mental capacity to question? After all, as you said, most people aren't capable of unbiased questioning. 🤔
People who are sincerely seeking truth will be asking the right questions. God will know if they're sincere or not and WILL 100% provide an answer to those who sincerely, humbly, and diligently seek Him. EVERY TIME.
If you don't know this, it's because you haven't sincerely sought Him.
It would be like you telling me there's no way to know what's in a room because it's too dark to see and NOBODY can know because YOU don't know. Well, those of us who really wanted to know simply did the logical thing and flipped the light switch on. Then we have the blind or willfully blind telling us we don't have eyesight because THEY haven't been sincere enough to seek out the truth with all their heart and ability. Seek God, flip the light switch on, start a relationship with Him and you'll finally see what we see and understand why we speak with such confidence. I can say confidently that my mother exists and there's nobody that will change my mind because I have a personal relationship with her. Same with God.
Just because you haven't met my mother or you believe she doesn't exist, doesn't make "your truth" ACTUAL truth. Same with God. He objectively exists without your belief, approval, or wanting Him to exist.

I think there was a slight misunderstanding of the question.
Some people interpreted it (correctly) as
    - Should every belief be allowed to be questioned?
And some others interpreted it as
    - Should a person question everything?
The first would be absolutely correct, no belief should be beyond scrutiny. And basically most who argued against questioning everything choice the second interpretation as their reason.
The second however is more complicated.
Questioning something means we need to think more, which means we need more energy, and that is only usefull (on a personal and/or societal level) if the reward is big enough.
But also questioning something specific can lead one person to false conclusions (e.g. flat earthers question something others don't, but then they arrive at the wrong conclusion, which means they would have been better off realizing their limitations), which means the person is, under certain circumstances, better off trusting the authorities (and that authority doesn't have to be alive or a single person) one trust more than oneself in that certain context.
The latter should also be the reason people don't question their religion, as while nothing is beyond scrutiny, people may believe to be unable to decide complex topics like that and therefore they trust in whatever religious authority they chose.

Yes, everything has to be questioned. Not necessarily to tear it down, which seems to be the understanding of a lot of the people on the lines. But questioning something also means that someone should answer the question, and when you answer for something that's been questioned, and your answer is a good one, you strengthen that thing. But more: you keep that thing active and alive in your head, it's something you actively know instead of just passively having in your head. It also makes you better at thinking and arguing about things.
And especially religion is something that needs this kind of treatment. Think about what you believe in and why you believe in it and what it does to you. Not to leave your religion, but to shape it into something actually valuable in your life, instead of some amorphous blob of believe.
