    My understanding, in Australia anyway, is that the speedometer must read from the true speed up to 10% + 4km/h faster. So if your true speed is 100 km/h then the speedometer can legally read anywhere between 100 km/h and 114 km/h. It is not allowed to show an indicated speed less than your true speed. I have compared the speedometer on my Vespa GTS 150 against a GPS and it seems to be 10% low so I tend to ride 10% over the speedometer indicated speed.
    So in your 30 mph example, I would be sitting on 33 mph. At 50 mph I would ride at 55 mph

      Where I live, the speedometer is not allowed to show higher than speed but allowed to be up to 5% low.

  • @thomasstropes4835

    All manufacturers are allowed a percentage from the actual speed. Most opt to make it slower than the shown speed. After all of it was higher then the shown speed they could be liable for speeding tickets/accidents.

    I am really surprised that it's off by that much! When I bought my 2nd minivan, I had been used to using my GPS (old style Garmin) and the speed always matched. When I bought the new (used) van I was surprised it was off. Turns out the dealer had put a slightly different size tire on it than the factory tires and it messed up the odometer reading. I made them switch the tires and it was right on with the GPS!

    A similar radar device is located not far from my house. I have a Yamaha Zuma 50FX which I found to be reading high on the speedometer by about 3-4 mph. This summer, I bought a Honda ADV 150 which runs true to the posted radar speed. Liked and subscribed. ;)

    As others have commented, UK regulations read "An allowance of 10% + 3 Mph" that's why EVERYONE on a motorway is driving at 80 MPH in a 70 zone, based on their GPS Sat Nav speed!

  • @DivergentDroid

    Excellent video, Thanks! Car makers will tell you the speedometer will not always be correct. Lots of things can effect the speed, tire pressure, temp, time of day, atmospheric pressure, how long the bikes were on the road before the test due to tires heating up, condition of the tires and more. Because the vehicle makers know this they choose to set the speedometers a tiny bit lower just to err on the side of caution. I like to bring a phone with GPS speedometer app to double check my speed.

      I wondered about that. The AK is more of a higher end scooter & in line with what we saw on the cars. Honda, Yamaha & Suzuki have me curious in particular… I was totally surprised that for the cost, I couldn’t consider the Vespa more reliable!

    This is very common both on bikes and cars. The tires alone play a big part in this. And I dont mind it since its better than the other way around, because you know that you NEVER exceed the speed limit if you check the speedometer. Can save you some money. If you want a true reading use the GPS.😎

    Also the faster you go the more they will be off.. Iv checked this using the GPS app off my phone.. The only brand that seems to be
    the most accurate with their speedometer's is Honda, the Chinese made scooters seem to be the most inaccurate..

    A former Vespa store manager told me that all Italian bikes are off by 10% optimistic. So that means that, if I’m blasting down the freeway on my Vespa GTV300 at 70mph indicated, I’m really doing only 63mph, even though it feels like 80mph.

    • @JLozdrummin
      @JLozdrummin 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This sound right. My 2022 Sei Giorni read anywhere from 5 to 7 miles over. I checked it from the radar in my neighborhood.

    I have a sym 400i. The faster you go the more the speedo was out. I could not understand why cars was driving right up behind me and overtaking when I was at the correct speed limit? Until I fitted a garmen onto the bike. I think the speed inaccuracy made riding dangerous.

  • @barryervin8536

    My first scooter was a cheapo Wildfire 125 (advertised as a 150 but it was a 125). I expected the speedo to be way off but it was actually dead accurate. My second scooter was a cheapo Chinese 250 and the speedo was hilariously optimistic, it read about 15 mph high at a true 55-60 mph cruise speed. I thought my new Kymco Like 150 was probably reading high, but I just got a GPS speedo to compare and apparently it's only about 1mph fast at 40-50 mph, better than my car. Usually speedos are off by a percentage though, not a fixed number of mph, so the error will be greater at higher speeds. In general, motorcycle and scooter speedos have always read high. I remember reading many road tests in motorcycle magazines years ago where the speedos were almost always reading way higher than the actual measured speed. Newer speedos tend to be more accurate, especially the ones that are electronic. I'm not sure if I really trust those roadside radar speed things, though. There are 3 of them within a few miles of me and I can go out and drive through all 3 of them at the same speedo reading and get different radar readings, like 3-4 mph difference. This applies to my scooter and my car. I wonder how often those things are re-calibrated?

    The speedometer are not wrong because of a malfunction. In Europe manufacturers can be held liable for speeding tickets etc if it can be proven that the speedometer is underestimating the speed. As a result all manufacturers build in a fudge factor of approximately 4 km/hr to cover their buts.

  • @Mytwistedvoices
    @Mytwistedvoices 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    All my motorcycles were accurate within half a mile low. (GPS) My analog gauges were lower in the high ranges. I was told manufacturers do this so claims to sue them for speeding tickets was refutable.
