    I highly recommend Mapei Ultracolor Plus FA grout. It's sold at Lowes and Floor & Decor. It's offered in many more colors than the Polyblend brand sold at HomeDepot. It's a bit more expensive than standard sanded/non-sanded grout, but totally worth it. It takes the place of both sanded and non-sanded grout. The perfect solution when you have a combination of matte and gloss tiles. It offers more joint size flexibility, from 1/16" to 3/4". It doesn't use Portland cement, so it eliminates efflorescence. It also doesn't require sealing, which is a major bonus.

    • @joaquinsuarez6090
      @joaquinsuarez6090 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was about to use it but saw a video saying dries in under 15 minutes and if not remove excess, it won't come off tiles. It should be great but only for profesionals and not slow home owners. I returned it and got another Mapei that is not fast setting.

    Fantastically thorough! You are a born teacher! You are a rarity in this day and age. Just a few thoughts. I think that in a few years or less, of showering in that space that you will become quite bored of the border and those shelves. They both become outdated quickly. The best bet would be to forgo the mosaic tile ribbon no matter how wonderful you think it is when you're in the tile aisle at the big box stores. Also, for timeless shelving for your shampoos, etc., always go with the sunken boxes inbetween the studs, for these things. You'll never regret it. Our upstairs (frat house) bathroom needs a desperate makeover. I'm 65, and will do the whole thing with tile myself because one cannot get these now-a-days-so-called contractors to commit to one's project after they've come over and given the estimate.

  • @rustyscupper6439

    Josh, when doing 90 degree corners and where the tile & shower pan meet, you should always use 100% silicone caulk, those joints will always crack if done in grout. Most Grout manufacturers have matching color silicone caulk for this purpose. On a side note, you can use a spray bottle with either soapy water or denatured alcohol to clean up your silicone caulk joints.

    I love doing tile. I found a great time for grout. put your grout into a pastry bag with a small tip (just like the one used for cake decoration). this tip keeps the project clean and less haze to clean up from the tiles. the most important tips is to load the joint full, don't skimp on filling the joint.
    I did it on my backslash and it worked great!! well if it sounds stupid but works well, then it isn't stupid. try it out.

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s a good idea. When I do stone veneer that is how I grout it. I wouldn’t mind trying a small project and see how it goes with that. It actually makes perfect sense. I made a video doing the stone veneer grout application. Thanks for your comment!

      I am doing my first grout today. I was thinking why is there not a gun style system to fill the gaps instead of just smearing it all over with tons of haze after. I wont be able to try something like this out because I am not the boss of this project but I am glad to see someone was thinking like I was.

    • @livinglargeonasmallbudget1027
      @livinglargeonasmallbudget1027 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rogerlane2282 from my experience it works well. The only tip I can give is to use premixed grout. And fill the piping bag as you go. You get consistent color with premixed gout. And only filling the piping bag as you need it keeps the grout from getting to hard to pipe the grout into the space between the tiles. I did this and it works great and so much cleaner.

    Just a tip, for all the DIYers watching this , depending on heat and humidity and tile type 30 mins may be a very excessive time to wait, all these things play a major factor in how easy it’s to clean off, also a circular motion is a very good way to clean off the grout on the first wash, even pressure what will help loosen the dry grout on the tile,

    Great video. Really clear and precise instructions. For the corner shelves , have you tried making the top part of the shelf sandwich, slightly longer (thickness of the tile) so that you can install the front edge without seeing the unfinished edge of the tile at the surface of the shelf? Hiding the seam, basically. I am a stone fabricator and this is how we usually install those pieces? Either way, shower looks great. We don't install tile format sizes, only countertop slab dimensions. Materials like Dekton, Neolith, Level etc... So , I am personally interested in how other people install tile sized formatted porcelain in showers. I will definitely watch some more of your videos.

    Great look Josh. It is always the way to go on large tile layouts and of course if it smaller, you do cover all the surface of course. I've also used an epoxy base grout which you do have to do a wipe down as you go but it's still the same process. I always have two - three buckets of water when grouting and the warm to hot water which helps the haze to clean up easier. My final wipe down is with a terry cloth material which absorbes more of the residue.
    I know everyone has certain tricks of the trade, but the important thing is not to rush this stage and follow the guidelines of your grout manufacturer. The caulking of the bottom is so important and nice if the grout company offers a matching sanded or non sanded sealant.
    Wonderful look with the shower Josh and to your wife. 👍🏻👍🏻

    You need to use way more clean water and change it out more, the proper way to wash is to do one clean side like you said but then flip pull and wash and repeat you should go through about four five gallon buckets filled halfway to do each wash. When you're done with the second wash and the fine-tuning take a towel and buff it, you won't have to come back the next day to do a third wash. And if your second wash is really good there will be barely anything even with a black tile. And you should also use more of a volume of grout on the wall when you're grouting the volume of grout helps push grout into the voids where you can't see

  • @johnnybrown9505

    Awesome video man. I'm with you when it comes to applying grout only over the joints and not over the entire tile. Is there an intelligent answer as to why we're taught to spread grout over the entire surface? Do they get a kick back on our purchase of grout? They must have their own personal cleaner upper.

      Maybe too late but listen.. Your floor and Walls WILL FAIL if you ended up setting your tile with grout instead of thin-set mortar. It Will Absolutely absorb water that will quickly result in Extensive Water Damage and likely cause you to have to replace everything and start over. If you haven't already.. remove the tiles and replace them with new tiles set with thin-set mortar or other appropriate tile setting adhesive, at VERY LEAST DO the FLOOR TILES. Do it, it sucks but it'll be much more work and MUCH more money if you don't.

    I’m about to grout my shower. My question is: can I use sanded grout on the entire thing considering I did 1/16 between each tile and 1/2” between each row? They’re standard subway tiles stacked vertically. Thank you! Using this video all day

    Many times have seen recommendation to use silicone instead of a simple grout in corner joints. But you didn`t use it. Is there any advantages for that, please? Some people uses a soapy water to prevent silicone against sticking around grout perimeter. Is this a good practice or finger is the best solution? :)

    good tutorial. I'll be grouting my shower as soon as the mastic on the tiles dries.

      @@TheExcellentLaborer Thanks. It was a hell of a road to get to the point of grouting. I had to rip out an old plastic surround mounted on drywall. Everything was moldy down to the studs and insulation. Its nice to see a project that's been months in the making finally coming within sight of completion.

    Try some cheesecloth the next day to remove the haze! while its dry the cheesecloth will buff it all off. Comes off likes a powdered dust. Seems to work much better for me than trying to wipe and wipe and wipe

    I painted my shower tiles with a bright white color. The tiles are not smooth now. I need to grout. I got gray to grout but now I’m just thinking May not work. May discolor my white since the tile is not smooth now. do you think?

    Josh, what did you do at the ceiling? Did you just leave it alone, grout or silicone? Thank you so much for such a detailed video, very very helpful!

      I want to know that too. I guess I will put white silicon and also on top of bathtub and all corners and inside niche corners and on metal schuler edging.

    Awesome video. Try white vinegar and a fine grit sand block for thinset on the tile face. Comes off like nothing.

    I accidentally used an outdoor waterproof and weather resistant silicone sealant in my bathroom and want to ask if it will be okay? It stated it could be adhesive to all materials and is 7 times stronger. The bathroom sealant was 5 times stronger. Both are water proof. I don’t want to redo it because I did a good job at sealing it evenly. I feel like an idiot right now.

    I was always told to never grout inside corners (caulk them) or they will crack.

    What happens if there is an inch between the shower tile and the tub? Ive tried caulking multiple times but the gap is so big it still leaks.

      Totally. I live in a very very hot place and 20 min after I started, the thing was completely dry and hard and I had the worst time trying to remove it. It doesn't come off easy once hardened :(
