I am a DIYer and your detailed, step by step videos have been extremely helpful. Especially your explanations on the how and the why for each single step. I am still considered a novice and there are a bunch of little details mentioned in your video that are overlooked in others.
It’s been a while since you posted this, but if you’re still curious about anyone who is doing a diy tile shower….well I’m doin it, bro. I’m doin it! First time though so it’s slow going and confidence ran out after I was told “demo” is not a legit interior design and I have to replace everything and can’t keep the toilet in the dining room. It’ll be a bit before I get to the tiling though. I’m just finishing up new insulation and electrical. Your videos are a huge help! I appreciate you!
We started renovating our bathroom and the shower wall is last. We had assistance with the floor tile. My boyfriend worked with his dad. The shower wall is harder, so we're a bit nervous bc we're on our own. I like the details in your video.
Thanks for the video. I am starting a project to tile my 60x32 shower. This video will help. One suggestion is to dry fit the tiles before applying the thin set. And am glad to mentioned scraping off the thin set above the first row.
Great work! Tiling is a bit of an art and it takes someone with patience and who takes pride in their finished work. You have both. If you are watching this video you could hire 10 tile setters and maybe one would be as good as he is.
God i6 wish I i had your patience and skill! I did my own walk in floor and walls a few yetas ago and it isnt awful but you really make it look easy! Thank you for always taking the time to show the proper process for us less than!

Preparing for my first shower tile job. I've done small jobs but nothing this big. My biggest concern (prior to watching the video...lol) was the layout. I want the tile to look continuous, however, I didn't want waste and little tiles everywhere. I'll have to take my math out of moth balls. lol This is a fantastic video. I bought the same tile cutter. Thanks for the help!!!
So glad I spent the time to watch your video’s. I am doing a DIY shower. Scared to death but these have made it not seem so impossible. Wish me luck and throw a prayer my way 😅
One of the best step by step tutorials that I have seen! Detailed without being boring. I will be doing a full shower like this next week. 12 x 12 staggered with an accent strip. No bullnose- Schluter strips instead.
@@wendyduncan9084 Spectacular! I had to get this bathroom remodeled for my customer by May 5 for their daughters wedding and I finished it up on April 30. Everyone happy and everyone LOVED IT! The Schluter strips are such a fantastic look over bullnose + my customers tile was not made with bullnose available.
I remolded not only my 1st foreclosure house, but I also worked for 5 years for a remodeling company here in S. FL. Some great tips here, and it's a great video. Many DIYs don't realize you need that level piece of wood to make sure there are not obvious slanted lines and also support to the tile on walls till the thin set starts to take hold. Unless it's a new build, many showers have bowed and non-plumbed walls. You walk in a shower and eyes are always drawn to eye level and above. Rarely to a compensation cut at the bottom. Also back buttering is essential. Again, great video!
I started gutting the master bath and I'm strongly considering pulling the old fiberglass shower and laying some tile! Thank you for the detailed and informative video! Liked and subscribed!
I did a tile shower in my previous home. It came out surprisingly nice. I used 6" Tiles and designer tiles with a Teal, almost see through, Glass diamond design about 2/3 of the way up. I am in my 70's now and am seriously giving considering doing a shower here.
Great video. Am beginning my 4th shower and use you for "re-fresher" before starting. You might mention to folks that if you use same color grout to finish it is more forgiving for small DIY mistakes.
Thank you for this video. I really like watching it. I have done 2 bathroom floors but not shower wall yet. For the bathroom floor I used the Schluter Ditra membrane which was very easy to work with. I am now planning on doing a 60x30 shower wall above a tub which is why I am watching your video. Not sure what wall board am going to use yet.
Best video I've seen on shower tile install- straight forward and common sense approach. I'm halfway through my job and was having a hard time with getting started on the tile. This is great! Thanks for sharing.
So glad I found this video. Going to rewatch this video again but I will be doing my shower soon. I really wish I found this leveling system before I did my floor! I didn’t do too bad but this would have made it so much easier!!!
This is exactly what I have been searching for. Thank you bro. All the other videos I have wasted time on didn’t explain going around the corners at least the ones I’ve watched. 👏🏿🙏🏿
I am actually about to take a leap of faith and take on my first full bathroom shower remodel for a customer which is a little intimidating because it’s new to me being a veteran carpenter with some tile experience but after watching a couple videos I feel mostly confident I can do it just hoping it goes smoothly with minimal errors but it is a high end job with lots of changes compared to existing set up like clients don’t want doors just a knee wall shelving and benches and tile all around so hopefully if I need advice you’ll be responsive 😂
I am redoing my bathroom shower after finding a large crack in the tub. I am Definitely saving this video and using it as my guide. Most videos don't explain much but this one makes me feel like I got this. I am more excited than scared to get this done now.
Great video. Did I miss something near the beginning? Tile is 11 1/4". Leave 1/8" gap at top and bottom. Mark a line at 12"? Shouldn't that be marked at 11 1/2" off the shower pan? Thanks.
Your videos are amazing! I can’t tell you how many I have seen throughout the years and never seem to find someone provide step by step details. I feel ready to redo my bathroom!! Thanks
I appreciate that. I try to keep my videos as thorough as possible. I know it’s hard to cover every situation but I try to cover the most common ones. I thank you for watching!
Your demos and explanations are excellent. Thank you for the information. I have been putting off completing our shower due to fear of the process. These videos have simplified it for me.
Well done. Doing this step in two days. Kerdi wrap and sloped floor pan are installed need to add sill yet and corner kerdi wrap today. Thanks for a fantastic video
I have always enjoyed doing tile and coming up with unique looks. The time is rewarding for sure for me and the home owner. Using mosaic tiles is a great way to do accent borders in many ways. I had one job I used one that had some glass 1 inch square pieces that I actually used on the by 12 tiles and I clipped the corners periodically when I did a job floor to ceiling. Then I continued the decorative mosaic border around the mirror that was recessed in the tile as well. It was a very rewarding job at the end and very well loved by the customer and friend of mine. I love using both styles of wet saws depending on the jobs. Putting the board across at the beginning and the same as your border section is always a plus. Fantastic job Josh, and wonderful choice of colors.
My wife picked out the colors. I was just the installer 😃. I’ll let you know you liked the colors. Sounds like a beautiful project you did! It’s very satisfying to look at a tile job when you are finished. Like always, thanks for watching and commenting David!
I’m a union worker for another trade that I won’t publicly mention lol but helping couple friends with weekend jobs gave me a passion for learning all trades including shower tiles. I’m naturally a homebody so watching this is more therapeutic to me than getting drunk at a bar LOL. Love the quality and value of your videos bro. I’m hard-wired to details too. 👍🏽💯
Absolutely fantastic videos my guy. This really helped me from start to finish. I love how you explain things very thoroughly because sometimes there is little steps you might miss or not think about, like the trimming of the cement board at the flanges.
One tip, preset your spacers behind the ledger boards and rest the first row in the spacers. That way they will be there for your bottom row. Great work! 👍
Hubby and I did a tub surround and tile floor in our master bath 25 years ago. Although the cuts weren't perfect, those tiles still are perfect. No cracking, lifting, etc. I did regrout and seal everything about 4 years ago in preparation to sell. If done correctly, a tile job could last a lifetime. That house also had an original 1941 black and white tiled bathroom, that I regrouted and is in pristine shape to this day.
A lot of good info and detail. I've done 25 to 30 bathrooms over a 35 year period but nothing in the past 6-7 years. Seems there is bunch stuff I'm not familiar with, never had, or maybe never needed. Great video though, got me to subscribe.
Halfway throught he video you ask to leave a comment if you have or have not. I have not. We are paying a contractor. No idea what it all entails and after watching half this video I am confident I will never do this myself. Thank you for the great video and major appreciation to those who do this for a living!
Of all the tiling videos I've seen this is the most extensive - Thanks! I read through all the comments to get a question answered and it must be annoying for a dozen people asking the same question about 11-1/4 vs. 11-3/4! I wondered also, but was clear by just reading comments. I also have watched your videos about installing, taping and waterproofing the cement board. But my question is about where the tiles meet the ceiling and concerns about water penetration. In your taping video I didn't see what you did there. Use Fibatape in corner between wall to ceiling? Thinset on the fibatape on shower wall and sheetrock spackling on the same Fibatape on ceiling? I am not sure the best way to do this to have to let no water get behind but to still be able to finish/paint ceiling. Again, thank you for the video and in advance for this answer!
Great video and very helpful. Would love to see how you would incorporate a bench seat into one of these standing showers. I'm getting ready to tackle a similar project and will definitely use this video. Thank you!
@@TheExcellentLaborer : Just about to start a project and the part about layout I’m finding particularly helpful. If aluminum edges were used instead of bullnose tiles, do those get installed at layout time, or slid in place while thinset is still wet? Also, how do you finish the bottom tile where it joins the shower pan? Grout or silicone caulking?
I am not a "TILE LAYER" but I've done a few jobs. I never use a leveling system I've never even laid out lines on the wall like you did. I admire your work and I've learned from it and I agree some times tile can be warped Like a 2x4 from Menards. It's a dirty job its messy but I have never had any complaints. Especially when I'm working on my own house Hmmmmmmm.
I went thru a 4 yr apprenticeship to be a journeyman tile setter. 1970s. Back then we used string to space horizontal, eye and measuring vertical. All tile surface was adhered with pure cement, on sand, cement and lime plaster on walls and ceilings, that we floated ourselves to true up all surfaces. Used black rubber pails to mix in. All tile was soaked in square laundry tub that also doubled as a wet lube for tile saw.
Well crap. Now that you've done such a great instructional video I feel obligated to do that project I've been thinking about for the past couple years. I haven't attempted tiling my shower yet due to no being familiar with how to setup the shower pan. You can bet I'll be saving this video for future reference. Thanks for the awesome content.
Great vid, I just noticed that at timestamp 01:28, you indicate that the measured size of the tile is 11 1/4", but the tape measure actually shows 11 3/4". cheers

The long wall I did a running bond with subway tile and the two end walls I did a herringbone. First time I’ve ever done tile let alone hanging cement board and waterproofing it. Very helpful videos.
Never done tile work before. I'm a banker, very minimal knowledge on tile and grout, but learning. I Have an old stand up plastic shower stall that has seen better days. Want to learn a lot before i try this. Thank you and will watch all your videos.
I like the details in your video.
your work is second to none may god continue to bless you and your family. bottom line
You just made my day Patrick. I really appreciate that. I know I am far from perfect but I try my best. Thank you for watching my channel!
I plan on tiling my shower this month. Your video has given me some great things to watch out for. the correct appoach to tiling the shower
Thanks for the video. I am starting a project to tile my 60x32 shower. This video will help. One suggestion is to dry fit the tiles before applying the thin set. And am glad to mentioned scraping off the thin set above the first row.
This video was my go to for renovating a space for a tiled shower. This step by step breakdown was easy to follow for a first timer, thank you!
Speechless, What an amazing work !!! I took notes from the beginning until the end. Thank you so so much.
I'm about to tackle a small shower. Watching this video has helped a lot. I'm sure it has stopped me from making installation mistakes.
5 year tile setter, my tip to add; use a toothbrush to clean out the mortar from your joints, works like a dream. Great video, I picked up a couple odd tips from your vids
I've tiled many showers. This is a very good tutorial.
Can you show a picture of the results?
How did it go? We are doing ours this coming weekend. Same strips. I hate bullnose when I have to clean. Did you find this video really helpful?
@@elpelone I would, but I don't think you can on here, I have never seen it done before. Sorry.
@@MRLAK-sb3mo thank you so much for responding. I’m going to put the time in to really watch this one before I tile this weekend.
I'm in the comments to try to understand the wood pieces, is that really necessary? Can't I just start at the bottom?
I started gutting the master bath and I'm strongly considering pulling the old fiberglass shower and laying some tile! Thank you for the detailed and informative video! Liked and subscribed!
Fantastic video for the DIY. Clear, simple, concise. Get the wisdom only a pro can give you!
I appreciate that Harold!
You ex0lain things very clearly! My husband and I are in the process of tiling a shower with a bench.
I did a tile shower in my previous home. It came out surprisingly nice. I used 6" Tiles and designer tiles with a Teal, almost see through, Glass diamond design about 2/3 of the way up. I am in my 70's now and am seriously giving considering doing a shower here.
Yep, done 2 and about to do another. Always have to review before each one since they are years apart.
I haven't ever done a shower before but your video is just what I was looking for from start to finish Thank You for being very precise
We are going to try setting our own tiles. This is valuable information
It is really good information if you have not done tile before. Take your time and it should turn out just fine. Good luck with your tile project!
I will be tiling my first shower and after watching the video, I feel really confident. Thank you so much!’
I have done 1 tiled bathtub and I’m getting ready to do a shower. This video is excellent and a great help. Thank you!
Good for you! I’m glad to hear your DIY project is going good. Stay tuned for more!
Great video.
Did I miss something near the beginning? Tile is 11 1/4". Leave 1/8" gap at top and bottom. Mark a line at 12"? Shouldn't that be marked at 11 1/2" off the shower pan? Thanks.
I was about to post the same question... Do people still not realize the most important step?
I'm doing one now getting ready to tackle it that's why I'm watching these videos hopefully I can learn
I forgot to tell you , excellent job on the whole project, i,ll be watching you more than the others, thanks again, Joe
Great explanations, my wife and I have been talking about changing the tile in our shower. I think I can do it with your instructions. Thanks
I've never done any tiling before and have always wondered if I can do one. You make it look easy.
You can. As long as you take you’re time, you’ll be fine.
very clear presentation, I believe it will be very helpful
Absolutely fantastic videos my guy. This really helped me from start to finish. I love how you explain things very thoroughly because sometimes there is little steps you might miss or not think about, like the trimming of the cement board at the flanges.
He never explained how to replace the empty Wedi sausage caulk tube system.
One tip, preset your spacers behind the ledger boards and rest the first row in the spacers. That way they will be there for your bottom row. Great work! 👍
What an inspiration. Hard work pays off. Thank you.
I really like how you made shelves from the tiles instead of using store bought plastic shelves
I’m using the same quartz from the vanity tops for the shelves and the niche.
Watching this for a friend and currently tiling the floors of an entire house. Great video
Thank you!
Bucket of water and a sponge to clean thinset off tile. And I use a paint brush for joints instead of a pencil. Good video.
I’m doing my bathrooms now. Already demo’s 1. Thank you for this beginner vid.
Super detailed video that covers most everything needed to get the job done.
Thanks Sandy. I know the more details the better. I appreciate you watching!
Getting ready to tile the shower and floor this week. Thanks for the extra tips!
My man !! Im doing mine in a couple of weeks. Tiling the shower bathroom floor and laundry room floor as well 👍🏼.
This is the best video on shower build so far!. great job.
Hello, I want to start working with the tiles and I found your videos and they are wonderful, all well detailed. Thanks a lot.
Tile is definitely a lot of work but it is a nice addition to a house. Good luck with your project. Thank you for watching!
This guy has the best DIY channel hands down
I went thru a 4 yr apprenticeship to be a journeyman tile setter.
A 4 year apprenticeship for a job that takes 6 months to learn is just exploitation.
Sounds tedious, with all the convenience of tools and material development it’s no wonder the learning curve has dropped dramatically.
@@Vizzi12tile work in the 70s still standing strong, tile done in the last 20 years, falling apart. So pick your battle's I guess.
@@dragonrider9051 that’s not a product of installation many times, that’s a product of material quality.
@@dragonrider9051 you not lying. The old school guys were better at building things. Nowadays it's just about cutting corners getting paid and dipping
Well crap. Now that you've done such a great instructional video I feel obligated to do that project I've been thinking about for the past couple years.
I haven't attempted tiling my shower yet due to no being familiar with how to setup the shower pan. You can bet I'll be saving this video for future reference. Thanks for the awesome content.
I enjoy doing tile showers. It’s rewarding when it’s all said and done. It’s definitely a lot of work. I appreciate your kind words Colton!
Great vid, I just noticed that at timestamp 01:28, you indicate that the measured size of the tile is 11 1/4", but the tape measure actually shows 11 3/4". cheers
Good catch! Thanks for letting me know.
This was a good catch. I was struggling with why you would measure 11 1/4” then 2- 1/8” grout joints and then set your board at 12”. I could not figure out what happened to the other 1/2”. Good video overall Josh, I wish I could just get you to do mine though. Lol
