    Should we sell a DIY window tinting kit for Teslas?

  • @Gamen4Bros

    I did my model S windows before this.
    Tricked it myself and actually got a decent result!
    But forgot to shrink it.. so that's where I went wrong. Got hair lines on the bottom edges and the tint was difficult to cut Exactly on the edge of the glass.
    This vid helped me rethink this

      It takes some practice! Might have to go through several tries before getting it just right. You got this! Also, definitely don't do it outside. You'll get so much debris trapped under the film that way

    When you bring everything down at the end does it hurt the car to get the solution on the inside of the door? It wouldn’t damage any of the electrical parts?

    • @tesbros

      No, all good there. You’ll have to be careful when tinting the front or rear windshield though

    Great work! Could you also do a video of tinting the Model 3's rear window (1-piece)? I'm struggling with this the most as the glass is quite large and I can't seem to shrink it properly without any creases or burning the film. Thanks!

    • @tesbros
      @tesbros  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sure. I can add that to our video list. I've had my share of throwing away bunch of film :D but my tip is to go get a heat gun that doesn't over heat too much as you heat. What happens is that it may be too hot and it can end up creasing the film. The key is to go slow. The other tip is to make sure you do a "i" pattern or sideways "H" and then to make sure you split those fingers evenly. That will ensure that each side is easier to shrink. Hope that helps and practice makes perfect! Good luck!

    • @teslafybc3450
      @teslafybc3450 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tesbros Thanks for the tips! I've switched to using the I-pattern as well and it seems to work better for me too. But still get those creases that pop up when I get closer to the edge so I'll have to pull my heat gun further away. I'll keep at it!

    Once you are done tinting and about to drive the vehicle outside for visual inspection, how do you handle the windows? Since they are propped up and closing the door will cause damage

    • @tesbros
      @tesbros  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After I'm done and visual inspecting, I heat it with a heat gun from the outside to activate and speed up the process. Then, I'll give it some extra time and then release the windows by pushing the button and it'll go back down. Then, I can close the doors and bring it outside. And for the customer I put a sticker indicating NOT to repeatedly bring the windows down for 3-5 days.

    Cool ! Question: So what happens if I don't "shrink" it on front of the glass first, and apply it directly to the inside or the glass panel ?

    • @tesbros
      @tesbros  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You will have wrinkles and you can still technically shrink it after but it tends to be more tedious that way and cause permanent creases.

    • @tesbros
      @tesbros  ปีที่แล้ว

      There’s enough space for me when I did it, but I use the triangle tool (like this: www.amazon.com/Zanch-Triangle-Installation-Application-Wallpaper/dp/B099FB3BRF) and a small squeegee. That way I can be more nimble.

    Is the process similar for adding a 2nd layer of tint on already tinted windows? Mine are tinted with ceramic but considering a 2nd layer to make them darker.

    • @tesbros
      @tesbros  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, but I would recommend removing the tint and applying a darker shade instead. Doubling them up can cause adhesion issues, bubbling, and/or an uneven appearance - even reduced clarity. Totally up to you, but it typically won't look as clean if you double them up.

    Some Tesla employees have said they wouldnt tint the windshield because there is concern about messing up sensors on the windshield and/or a lot of electrical. Other employees have their windshields tinted and say its fine. What does TESBROS say! Because I really want to do it, but not if there are any drawbacks in the future

    • @tesbros
      @tesbros  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can tint it, but do your research and trust that installer first. Make sure they have plenty of experience working on Teslas, because there is concern about water getting into sensitive areas while tinting. This goes for the rear windshield too.

    Hey, could you give me the formula for the slip solution 😅. Thank you

    • @tesbros
      @tesbros  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, sorry for the late reply. It's not an exact formula. It's more about what you're comfortable working with, and how fast you are/how much experience you have. I would start with 5 drops of baby shampoo or dish soap (like 7th gen with no additives) in a one quart spray bottle. If the tint is sliding off the window, you'll know you have too much soap, and if the tint is sticking and not sliding enough, you need more soap. Eventually, you'll get the right amount for you. And remember that it can change slightly with temp and type of soap - even type of tint.

    whats the best tint on the market currently? Some people say ceramic and some people say crystalline.

    • @tesbros
      @tesbros  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both great options! Ceramic will typically be darker and easier to install (cheaper) than crystalline. Crystalline is known for being a really thin tint with a lighter shade, yet it still blocks the same amount of UV rays as other tints that are the same %. Some people put crystalline on their windshield for that reason. So, both great options. I would decide based on if you care about the privacy of a darker tint or cost. Here is 3M Crystalline specs: www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b00016683/ and 3M Ceramic specs: www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b5005118130/ that might help with comparison.

    what did you do to trick the Tesla that the car is locked

    • @tesbros
      @tesbros  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Open the door and use a screw driver to push in the latch, tricking it into thinking it's closed. You'll know it worked if the window rolled up. Be careful with your windows like this! If you try to close the door with it tricked, the glass will hit the trim around the edge of the door and get scratched or worse.
