On a drama shoot, I had an actor who had no duologue until after he put his jacket on, his outfit was a becoming a pain to mic up and I took me a long time to realise I can mic up the jacket carefully before he puts it on. It ended up working super well and we had good audio once he had settled with it on.
Not an uncommon technique but I often find that if it's not feasible to mic a character up, such as when working with young children, difficult costumes or within tight time constraints. Placing a mic on a character opposite the actor with dialogue, in such a way that it is able to capture both actors can actually sound almost as good as if the mic was directly on the actor.
Deity Microphones I lav’d up a bride and groom and caught a precious interaction after they walked down the aisle, “what do we do from here, we didn’t rehearse this far, wanna get out of here?” “Steven we’re marrrieddd”. I hid the mic on the dress for the bride, and in the collar for the groom. So helpful to watch your other video on hiding lavs!
One that I have done recently is using gaffer tape and taping the lav to the underside of a baseball hat bill to hide it and it gave a great signal for me to use.
I know this doesn’t have as much to do with capturing the audio but I’d love to see a tutorial on some basic post mixing that you should do to all your audio. Like removing noise, how to use compression correctly, normalizing, etc. I have stuff I do but I’m not sure if I’m doing it correctly!
In documentary shoots for me its important to have as much stuff on a shoot possible, because you”ll never know whats gonna happened, what type of clothing your talent would wear on, and, in some cases, when i hide a mic on talent, i just cant avoid some of clothing rustle, thats where boom mic comes in handy. In some cases, even when clothing doesnt make any noises, indoor boom mic can sound more brighter, more clear and more natural, so this video actually show that lav mic is not a only solution for interview, always remember - you only got one take - and thats it, so you wanna make shure that if something happenes to your wireless system during the shoot - you always got a nice, clean, wired boom signal thats gonna save you. Great videos, guys, love your stuff btw.
I study at a cinema school in brazil and you show here how important the sound department is on the final quality of a movie. When people think about cinema, the straight thinking is about cinematography and the actors. I'm happy that Deity has this initiative to introduce the technics of a good audio in a movie. I would love to watch a video about setting up audio on sport scenes, like running, climbing, swimming...!! Sometimes the frame is too open and the boom doesn't make it. So, what we should do?
Double-dippin on the set? Smart. Dead battery trick. Nice! Boom sounds better of course. Can we have a lapel that sounds as good as the boom mic? You know, I'm not asking much. Just take a really good boom mic, like the S-Mic 2s, apply a shrink ray, and don't lose any of the dynamics. And WHAT??? Giving away the whole connect kit??? I have one, and WOW! Someone is going to be a happy camper! :)
It would be great to see some tips and recommendations for working in situations where you have to move quickly and adapt to a variety of different environments, such as interviews or coverage at events. Things like how to keep gear light and easy to carry whilst having the right kit to adapt to unforeseen scenarios and how to get levels and framelines quickly without holding up the camera. Loving the content!
My husband and I enjoyed your video. It has been very informative for us. You definitely took away the anxiety. You guys took the time to explain things so rookies like us can understand. Thanks and we will be looking for more videos
It would be fun (and helpful) to see how to boom in the rain. Pro and low budget comparison would be cool. Keep the videos coming please! You are all beautiful people!!!!
The way Marlon's eyes drift off really make me wonder what he's thinking. Like, give Marlon his own series. I want to know this man! "The wonderfully wonderful world of Marlon." In all seriousness, good job fellas. Very informative.
Could you make a video about the best full audio setup for your money and why each item is important and what the use for each item is? Or - could you make a video make a video about how to make your own wireless body pack system or the best budget wireless body pack system if it’s too hard to really make your own. Thanks for all the videos! Also, I was recently re-watching your boom pole buyers guide and saw that you mentioned a video about how to internally wire a non-internally wired boom pole but when I searched for this video, I could not find it. There also was no link in the description or (i) cards. Thanks for all you do for the audio and filmmaking community. It’s a great help to have channels like you delivering quality educational content for filmmakers and audio people.
I would love to see a scene dialogue setup between 2 actors. Espacially if your a 1 man band & got to shoot it alone. This vid is close to what i'm thinking to setup for a scene. Good job on your tutorials. :)
I’m just getting starting in sound world and you should know how much your videos and content have helped me. Thank you for so much effort making these wonderful videos. Greetings from Colombia.
Hey Andrew, love the series and am learning a lot. One thing I would like is a good explanation of "boom" in terms the people lump shotgun all together, when booming a shotgun mic can mean so much since the boom shotgun mic could be used for outside and that mic needs a wider pickup then booming a shotgun mike indoors for an interview. What I see as confusion is taking the pickup patterns (cardioid, super cardioid, omni), and lumping them all into "shotgun mike". Which then leads to the statement than many reviewers like to say as "xxx is the best shotgun mike for general purposes" ... I am confused just trying to write the question.
Great job on the video, concise and easy to follow with excellent advice. Perhaps make a video on where the Sound Mixer would position themselves on set physically as this interview happens. For example they need to be on set close enough to make any quick changes if lighting changes need to happen. They need to be able to see the cameras and the director, and how would the sound mixer communicate to the producer that the frequency had interference or the talent squashed their Lav mic when they touched their chest. Thank you for mentioning about the sound blankets Andrew. I look forward to seeing the next video
Could you do a video about livestream audio and what are the best tips for getting great broadcast sound . Thank you so much I've learned so much by watching this channel
Great Video! I recently purchased a Diety Duo to add to my inventory of mics. Your video helps me to better understand how to best utilized one and two person setups. However since you asked I would also like to see and application with a pod device like the Pod Trak 4
Awesome video as always, Only downside to the content you upload, is the Murphy's law concerning the fact that I always see them after they would have been useful LOL. My question is: How would you approach a changing frame line situation(like a fast paced documentary, or dynamic narrative where the director is looking for an "authentic" occurrence that you could not plan ahead for) and how would you estimate the frame line without having "BOOM" screamed at you, while working in an ENG setup?
Great video guys, thank you. Would love to see a video of how to perform an interview video outdoor in a busy/noisy public area, where the subject is also walking and talking. The sound recording techniques using the deity gear and how to properly set everything up would be so helpful to see
Next video please how best to set low and hi pass filter. If you could include best practice to eliminate unwanted noise such as handling, room reverb, traffic etc that would be much appreciated. Your series is great I have learned so much. Thanks Richard
Wow! Just ran across your channel and this video was exactly what I was looking for! Very informative and very very well done! High production value! Just subscribed so please keep up the amazing content!
I would love to see a video of how to match different mics in post. Having to mix a lav to a boom because something went wrong and there wasn't a re-take done and your stuck...
Great job guys, Now all I want to see is the BTS of what microphone set up you used in the making of this video... And an interview kit from DEITY on my doorstep of course 🙋🏻♂️
I would love to see you guys make a video on how to mix audio properly in post. For example how you said often times you would mix both the lav and boom mics together. That would be pretty cool!
I really enjoyed the sound quality of this video! Well done! Guess I missed the giveaway... :P It was so funny when the male talent hit the plant leaf with his back :D
Thank you so much for this video. As someone who has recentely become more involved in sound for audiovisual media, these are very helpful. FOR THE NEXT VIDEO: What is the best set up for recording inside a vehicle? To me that is something that is always a challenge.
Thank you for also showing tricks for people not able to record iso tracks and are feeding sound directly to camera. Can you show us tricks you can use in high RF interferance areas to treat you space to help get cleaner rf for you wireless mics?
Great video! Love the etiquette and lav miking hacks. Would love to see a video on mixing interviews like this (multiple mics) to fix potential phase issues and more. Keep ‘em coming!
I love the 101 series they're very informative and fun to watch too. Imagine you have to mix a small band trough a PA system and also get the sound for the video with the ambience of the place and the crowd I would love to see your approach to this one. Thx and keep up the good work.
Man I just love your content. I literally went from deity skeptic to deity fan just by seeing how you guys legitimately care about the sound community. Please keep making content and great products! Also sidenote, where's that DIY BDS system video at we know yall have the sauce.
Awesome video! It would be amazing if you guys talked about deliverables (most used file naming protocol). There are so many things to keep in mind when delivering audio. You can also add the most commonly used platforms for delivering big or small audio files. I think organization extremely important. Explain the different kind of file formats used + everything that you can think of that has to deal with deliverables and file management. Thanks!
Definitely great advice on the BULLET, I can see where TSA would not be a fan of that LOLz...love your videos guys, Extremely informative awesome tips and tricks. I hope to put all of your suggestions and tips into practice with some interview videos I have coming up.
I'd like to see you go through a complete workflow for one setup. Preparation pre shoot, decisions on location and workflow in post. It would be really helpful to see how you approach every step.
i Would like to see videos about all the little secrets and important tips for filmaking audio. As well as postproduction basics. Thanks for all your videos! Greetings from Spain.
I really like these videos you are doing. Great work! What I would like to see more is the type of "artist's secret tips" videos. Like the one, you have made in the past about Foley artist job. You actually doing and the professional guys teaching how to make good footsteps, cloth sounds, stab sounds or whatever. It is so valuable to see what those professionals use and what are their input on it. But I am sure they are as well interested to see novice people trying out the art and even bringing fresh ideas on the table in some instances. These types of videos could be spread even wider like tips from foley, soundtrack, mixers, DJs and other professionals.
Nice work, as always! This channel is outstanding. I would love to see a video breaking down the hardware differences between entry-level, pro-sumer, and pro-level microphones. Crack open a d3 pro, an s-mic 2, and maybe a fancy Schoeps or something and talk about the hardware differences, and how you guys are able to offer that level of quality at such a good price. I’m trying to decide between the d3 pro and s-mic 2s at the moment and I’d love to know more about the nitty-gritty component differences. I’m also eyeing a lav setup, so the same thing for the lav lineup would be awesome. Thanks!
Can you explain what would be the best workaround for post production if multiple people (video editor, audio post, etc) have to work on one edit? Thanks!
This is fantastic! Just the kind of info I was looking for. I would also love to see some tips for budget filmmaking. How to work off a single mic, single camera, single LED Light? It would be a challenge, but I'm sure there are some creative solutions out there. Thank you!
My newest go to are hair mics. They work especially well in a car if the talent is turning their head looking out windows left and right. Also work especially well on Found Footage style filming.
THANK YOU for a great overview - well done and most useful for me. I have a small home studio with good sound treatment. Also do interviews in the field post covid. Your tips help!
Just discovering this August of 2020, and I love the presentation and production of this educational video. It’s concise and easily digestible. What I would like to learn next is: how to do this kind of audio setup in our current pandemic protocols and guidelines? What nuances or obvious treatments and precautions should we be aware of when mic-ing up talent nowadays to ensure the safety and comfortability of our talent and ourselves?
Great video guys! Seems like production sound gets so little attention these days so I am glad that you guys are pick up what has been lacking here on TH-cam! I have watched so many of your tutorials! Could you do a comparison and application video for boom mics with different pick up patterns, showing their differences, strengths, weaknesses and best uses? Thanks again!
I'm definitely trying the Lav Bullet trick next time, it's awesome! I would love to see a video where you explain when and how to use timecode in different situations like short films or corporative videos, from choosing the correct cable for the recorder/camera to adjusting FPS. Anyway, thank you, Andrew!
Great Video.! What about a video on simple methods to more seamlessly cut together audio from Deity's different mics or even the same one from different locations... with the emphasis on "SIMPLE" ? I see a lot of indie content these days that does a great job matching the look of different shots and transitioning creatively between them.... but they often really seem to struggle with doing the same for their audio. Again, love what you guys are doing.
Really enjoying the content guys! I would love to see a video on lav micing talent in a scene where there is a lot of movement, (fast walking, erratic movement and possibly even running) also in different outfits/ materials. It would also be great to hear what each of the mic positions sound like whilst on the move, even techniques that aren't as good as others would be interesting to hear and compare. Of course I'd also love a Connect interview kit! ;)
Good stuff. Perhaps a video on some on set horror stories and how you dealt with them? Either through preparation, quick thinking, or the... "fix it in post." Could be fun to learn how the pros deal with unexpected issues.
I think you should make a video about using how to process the audio of a person speaking when the recording has a lot of envirmental sounds. Most youtube videos focus only on how to improve voice in quiet places but I haven't seen one when you improve the voice in an non ideal escenario.
I know you've done a few videos on laving up people, but If I could suggest an idea for a video, it would be an in detail look at the different sticky materials etc a location sound recordest would keep in their consumable kit. Go into detail with the different products used, what their properties are and the reasons for using them. I hear a lot of different medical tapes are used, but i'm never quite sure which ones are which, particularly as a lot of stuff are called different things in different places. Cheers.
I would like to see how to conduct man on the street type interviews. For example interviewing someone at a rally or any other crowded event. Love the videos btw. Full of just great tips and information.
Hi just discovered your channel and this was super helpful. Hopefully this summer/fall I'm starting a passion project of interviewing veterans and was wondering if you guys had tips and tricks for finding the best, low budget, low number of equipment to get started.
I’ve been learning a lot with you guys! I would also love to see how would you go on recording a band and their instruments or only one singer with an instrument, would be really helpful. Keep up the great work, we do appreciate the effort ! 👍
The sound of the supercardiod it's really awesome, do not tell the diference till you hear it side by side. I would like to see a video for post production, for example what software do you guys use, or if you record to mono signals how do you edit, compression and more! Great videos! Thank you!
Thanks again for this awesome videos. What about a series about postproduction for budget movies, in a small crew? How to record SFX/foleys, edit dialog, setup control room and other stuff like that. That would be great.
I just wished that you had a bit longer clips of the lav vs shotgun mic as they were very short but I think I preferred how the lav sounded in this situation.
Hey guys! Since you've mentioned in this video the way to avoid mic bleed on set, can you show us how to work it in post? Also, can you use this same interview and show how to decide which mic to use and how to match them so there is minimal sound difference. Thanks
This is one of the best videos I have watched for audio setup for a two person interview using a 3 camera setup. Thanks for this free course. Also, just the mention of ISO recording while it seems obvious to do, honestly I have seen people skip that 1 step and regret it latter. Taking the time to get great audio is important. I really appreciate the comments about making sure that the talent is comfortable. Letting people know what you are doing and why is smart. I have seen people let the talent mic themselves, they are not professionals and have know idea about placement and the tricks like the mic bullet or the battery hack. This is an amazing video and I will subscribe and look for more of your content and share with others I know. Also, are you still doing the giveaway? I am just watching this one and it is a year old but you didn’t mention a time limit, only the best comment. 😀
I would love to see a video on a three person interview/panel for a live stream set up. Like say a cooking segment for a morning talk show for example.
Hey Andrew great video. I do multi person interviews but end up using one boom in the middle of two people which never gives a great sound. Would love the opportunity to have a lav kit that will mic up two people. . In hope of winning I have pre ordered a roll of butyl . I love to be prepared just incase. 😄 thanks again for the great tutorial.
I'm a wedding videographer, I was wondering what you would use to create a sort of false sound stage for run and gun shooting? I want clearer audio for weddings but can't seem to get the crispness I desire from my audio. Thanks, guys, keep on making awesome content!
#FromBrazil Guys, how to click on more than one like? OMG! This class is too beautiful. I'm loving them all! I have D3P and I love my mic a lot. LOL Thank you!!!
Part 1 I would love to see how a scene would be mic-ed for 8 or more people with primary characters having interactions with the background characters and the redundancies needed to do that. Part 2 Budget options for redundancy. I recently lost an interview with a professor because of a lack of redundancy as budget lav kit crapped out and my camera doesn't have a headphone out. Suggestions needed for a run and gun situation
Can you all do a video about common issues you might run into on set and how to troubleshoot them? For example: how would you handle hearing wireless interference mid-interview or scene? Or how would you deal with a last-minute location change to a difficult sound environment? Who would you communicate to and how would you go about keeping the director happy while doing your job well? Hope that makes sense.
What are some lav hacks you've used in the past?
On a drama shoot, I had an actor who had no duologue until after he put his jacket on, his outfit was a becoming a pain to mic up and I took me a long time to realise I can mic up the jacket carefully before he puts it on. Placing a mic on a character opposite the actor with dialogue, in such a way that it is able to capture both actors can actually sound almost as good as if the mic was directly on the actor.
I just let it all hangout! I like to work very Brecht-ian. You're not fooling anyone, they know what their watching.
It’s impressive that we have this level of quality content for free. Enjoy, guys. No excuses to not learn.
Right
I've learnt ALOT from TH-cam!
Thanks Marlon and Andrew - love the button and Joe's Sticky Stuff approach!
Everytime I find a good tutorial I see you in the comments :)
I'm so happy to have found this channel. Never to late to learn!!!

Over 20 years I do TV and video. Doing audio still is the hardest thing. Great videos you got! I learned a lot!
I love your content - but man whoever is doing the editing is freaking amazing.

I’m just getting starting in sound world and you should know how much your videos and content have helped me. Thank you for so much effort making these wonderful videos.
Greetings from Colombia.
This is another excellent video in your series.
Now waiting on a video on a DIY Battery Distribution System for Sound Bags.
came here for audio found myself learning motion graphics.
kudos to the editing team👍

OMG, I'm watching this channel more and more - my most watched channel now. I think Deity is turning me into a sound geek :)
I like the boom audio sound!

I love the content you guys dish out. What is an inexpensive way to do an interview? Best audio under $200
What an amazing video! Just reposted for our students to take a look at. ✌🎬

i Would like to see videos about all the little secrets and important tips for filmaking audio. As well as postproduction basics. Thanks for all your videos! Greetings from Spain.

We did that. Check out this video th-cam.com/video/wrQ-ophWY7Q/w-d-xo.html
Wow this was exactly the video I was looking for!
I am really trying to wrap my head around EQ. Both live mixing and post and would love a video with some tips, tricks, and advice!
Great job! I really like how u guys can make all those things so easily.
I would love to see how to mic/record a small band on live shows!
please do a video (videos) on the post production side of things of audio mixing for film
I would love to see some more videos on post processing. How to EQ different types of voices to sound best, best compressor settings, etc.
I'd love to see a video on miking and mixing a multiple-speaker event for livestreaming. Thanks for the informative videos!
Super thankful for this video !
I would like to see the full interview between Kate Peabody and Solomon Pratt? Great job guys.
I would love to see what you do when it's really windy or noisy environments.
TNX your tipps are sooooo great !!!!!!!!
Cheers.
I would love to see a video about a run and gun style lav and boom setup. maybe with a limited crew.
I would like to see how to conduct man on the street type interviews. For example interviewing someone at a rally or any other crowded event. Love the videos btw. Full of just great tips and information.
awesome guys, great stuff!
Would love for you to show how you process you audio mixes for these videos? What tools/apps and plug-ins do you use? What DAW or NLE?
Love it! Can you explain the difference between a studio microphone and a shotgun microphone, and when one would be better than the other?
This was helpful a lot. How do you do your mic set for inside the car shoot with at least 3 people? and how do you capture audio for a wide shot?
I'm a wedding videographer, I was wondering what you would use to create a sort of false sound stage for run and gun shooting? I want clearer audio for weddings but can't seem to get the crispness I desire from my audio. Thanks, guys, keep on making awesome content!

Guys, how to click on more than one like? OMG!
This class is too beautiful. I'm loving them all!
I have D3P and I love my mic a lot. LOL
Thank you!!!
Thku soo much.. bruh... Love u set and boom audio is best ... Thanku again ..
Part 1
I would love to see how a scene would be mic-ed for 8 or more people with primary characters having interactions with the background characters and the redundancies needed to do that.
Part 2
Budget options for redundancy.
Hope that makes sense.
a video on simple cleanup of audio would be nice. Things like removing any background noise that happened to creep in
Awesome content!
I just discovered this channel and find your content interesting. A Video on how to set up audio for event livestreaming would be interesting.
I would appreciate video on how to use timecode with your systems and different timecode options compatible with your products. Thanks
You should do a video on timecode and the benefits of a smart slate.
