Did civilians really have a picnic during a battle?

- The Confederacy had been victorious at Fort Sumter in April and now the next battle - at Bull Run was taking place.
The men, women and children who made up the wealthy elite of Washington came out in their carriages out of curiosity to follow the Union army on July 21st, 1861 to Centreville, Virginia.

@Broderick Winfield I mean this was during the early age of firearms, most people still use muskets and black powder based firearms, long range rifle rounds haven't been invented yet, plus it's hard to hit a shot even a mile away with modern equipment. If anything it would be the artillery that has a potential to hit them. But unless the artillerymen were braindead enough then it is unlikely that an artillery round would be 5 miles off target

It would be like watching one of Diplexheated’s TH-cam videos. Except in real life there were no free roam cameras like in the Men of War/Total War games he plays, but instead you’re standing next to him observing from a balloon while it’s live, listening to what he is saying as you both are looking from a scope of some sort. It would be a personal trip with a guy commentating on the battles and naming off the different units of either side, who’s probably getting payed for doing this for entertainment services rather than gaining income posting monetized TH-cam videos.

This battle looked like a "gentleman's battle" where they pre-determined where to fight, and gave each other time to line up their soldiers in formation for battle. This was the only way the spectators could be able to come out to watch.
During the Sengoku Period in Japan, some civilians had picnic during the battle as well.

Use real life examples, not examples from film. Makes you appear like the only history lessons you get is in Hollywood.

Some of the congressman and senators were captured. My favorite story though is about Col. E.B.C. Cash. Here is the story," In the closing stages of the battle, the 8th SC was in pursuit of the fleeing Yankees. Many prisoners were taken, including several civilians caught behind the lines. One of these was Congressman Alfred Ely of New York, who had come out to picnic and watch the battle. Brought before Cash by Sgt. Maj. W.S. Mullins, the congressman immediately demanded his release (following that with several offending oaths, according to one account). Cash, with his temper now ignited and a fire in his eyes, looked down over his mount and responded: "You son-of-a-*****! You’re one of them politicians that started this war!" Spurring his horse, Cash drew his pistol, intent on killing the Congressman. Ely took refuge behind Mullins as Cash attempted to get a clear shot. For a few moments, these two went round and round Mullins until a staff officer intervened.
Seto Kaiba My. What a story.
I can imagine Sgt Mayor Mullins just looking annoyed as the two circled around him thinking "Why did I join the army?"

Some of us laugh at the sight of people having a physical fail moment. These people loved watching real battles in person...
People used to watch gladiators fight to the death or watch public executions. This scenario isn't as strange as you'd like to think.
Cja weren't gladiatorial arena matches just fighting and no killing because gladitorial fighters cost a lot to train, feed, cloth, etc?
yup but of course there are stil death but most of time it more like WWE but more dangerous
Bryan Manuel most gladiators would have to die while battling eventually, it just wasn’t as common as seeing a death in every battle. The people went there to see blood.

In the Civil War, especially the early major battles, both sides fought with tightly packed line infantry advancing under little or no cover, then discharge volleys at each other. So it is much safer to spectate than a modern street fight.

When you use the country flag instead of the battle flag so you don't get demonitized...
Wittymcschmuck The Funk Actually the battle flag hadn’t been designed yet at that stage in the war.
Why should the video get demonitized for that?
Avery Lopez-Baines thats really stupid. I mean, i could understand the Swastika. But that is ridiculous.
It’s actually the correct flag. It would be changed later for being too similar to the Union flag.
During first battles of the war the first confederate national flag ( the star and bars ) was used battles flags in some units along side state flags , the Bonnie blue flag and Bonnie blue style flags . It wasn't until 1862 that the battle flag, army of northern Virginia version , started showing up a lot in battles , but the stars and bars stayed the national confederate flag until around July of 1863 when it was replaced with the stainless banner . Even through the stars and bars was replaced . Some versions of it was still used as battle flags mainly in the western theater until the end of the war . The famous confederate battle flag had many different style flags , and variations depending on which army it was in the unit and state or area . There also many different confederate flags that were used as battle flags throughout the war that weren't a variant of the southern cross or the national flags . These were unique flags that's were homemade , or designed after state or other flags . These like many other saw use in the east early in the war but were used throughout the war in the west
