I simply love ABT. I love the effort and the passion. It's like a audio visual book that takes you there.
When I lived in my beloved Fredericksburg, it was a beautiful quiet quaint town....but the developers came and destroyed all that was beautiful in my beloved 'Burg. I used to walk Caroline Street to William St over to Princess Anne, get an espresso at a certain coffee shop... but now... one can not get in or out without being in a terrible traffic jam.
You got that right . I live here in the burg for the past 20 years. Crazy amounts of change it has been.

Carl D... a car salesman turned real estate developer.. wanted to get filthy rich by buying up a lotta land on the cheap later to overbuild the region...Lots of people made money selling their land, while destroying the quality of life... I wish they never put a VRE stop in Fredericksburg.

As a resident of Fredericksburg, I thank you for keeping history alive!! I was born in Richmond and have spent most of my life in central Virginia. If you love history, Virginia has many tons of it. I'm 75 and I feel like I've only seen a small part of everything that's here. Williamsburg is the home of Democracy, it's a must see if you love history!! Come on down, ya'll hear???
Great content as always. I hope people who watch this episode realize that when war, especially a civil war, show's up on your doorstep you maybe would rethink supporting such a means to address your political grievances. Relevant today when a certain percentage of our current population still thinks it's a possibility. Keep the great content coming.
Yes. Because the first side to exchange ballots for bullets will certainly fail.
Some of the people you are talking about are only calling out this possibility because they see the similarities to 150 years ago. No one in their right mind wants this to happen, but not wanting something to happen doesn’t mean you don’t call spades, spades and prepare for the possibility in the event those in power decide to start it (cause they certainly are trying).
When elections are stolen, corrupt judges ignore proof of obvious cheating!...when you can't trust the legal process, what else is there?...

Fredericksburg is my hometown, so this was a lot of fun! People don’t always realize how important the town was. The town now is a cute, progressive, fun little town that truly values it’s community. I hope this encourages people to visit.

@@YvngQ because our town is partially dependent on tourism. Also, the people that watch videos like this one would appreciate Fredericksburg & not be the ones clogging up Central Park. They’d be touring the battlefields.

I was at the 150th reenactment in 2012. I was with the NY boys going across the Rappahannock on our homemade pontoon boats and then fanning out on the banks to street fight the Confederates on the other side.
Later in the day we assaulted Marye's Heights on a portion of the original ground.
That was probably the most fun reenactment that I had ever been involved in.
I think Burnside would have preferred to not make any troop movements until he had the pontoons in his possession and the pontoons being delayed really was a big factor. Of course, he was getting heat from Lincoln to move so it was out of his control.

29:00 the city, the middle part of Fredericksburg was so affected by the war that it didn't recover until 1960
That really had to be the most amazing part of the presentation right there. That it didn't fully recover (sic) until the 1950s? Makes one wonder what it might have looked like in 1861 (or what Fredericksburg might have looked like if the war never took place).
Burnside sends in Union Infantry across 400 ft wide river, pontoons, rowing while the bridges are under construction, and under fire, among the regts is the 20th and 19 Mass vol Inf!

I enjoyed learning a lot of the facts that you shared especially appreciated your mentioning the Blacks who were former Slaves who left during the war to join the Union Army. Do you have any other info/letters providing more info regarding the Blacks who lived here in Fredericksburg?

'Pont' is the French word for bridge. 'Pontoon' means little bridge. The other street fighting the Federal army was involved in was in the streets of NYC, during the Draft Riots.
I am a descendant of the great Robert E. Lee. After doing some research I have come to the conclusion that a lot of his success was due to the fact he knew the enemy was expecting him to do a lot of things according to what history has taught them about warfare. He got a lot of his victories in battle by doing just the opposite. He never did what was expected. In my humble opinion he would have won at Gettysburg had Jeb Stewart done his job instead of going out glory hunting.
Very disappointed that when you were at the international Auto Specialist that you did not show the historical Hardees that was near there, a rich piece of history right there. Lol but seriously, great video, very interesting seeing videos of the history of the streets I drive down all the time.

Reenactors on both sides usually look pretty well-fed to me.

My great, great, uncle was killed on the 12th. He was in the 48th north Carolina Infantry. Do you know anything about their role and/or the history of them at this battle.

@@dsmonington army occupation is not weaponized..The war came into there community. The people were not fighting. The Armies were.Not civilians.

Thank you very interesting tour and outline of the battle at Fredericksburg. Two questions if there is ever an answer to these. I believe that General Hooker does break through the Confederate lines on the Heights. Why couldn't the Federals support this break through? When it becomes obvious that this battle has failed for the Union why does Burnside retreat back across the Rappahannock instead of holding the town for his winter encampment?

No union division broke through Marye's heights. You're probably thinking of General Meade's breakthrough at the Massaponax. His breakthrough wasn't supported, so he had to pull back at the inevitable Confederate Counterattack.
They didn't winter in the city because the Confederates still held the heights and could easily bombard the city from the heights. It was the smart move to retreat across the river.
My 3rd great grandfather Jonas Crissy from Somerset County, Pennsylvania enlisted with 5th PA Heavy Artillery I believe Company H. He was captured on December 13. Apparently he ran up embankment of Rappahannock and ended up face to face with Confederates, lol. Sounds like something my family would do, Haha. He went through 2 POW camps in Virginia before ending up at Andersonville. His mother paid a ransom and got him released. He weighed 70lbs.
An Uncle John Kemerer PA 145 CO I died of injuries recieved on December 13th at Fredericksburg. To date I had no less than 8 grandfather who served with the Union.

I've often wounded, at what point did Burnside or any general in any battle at that time realize that the element of surprise was gone? Was the logic of the day that different?
Lincoln put so much pressure on his general's that Burnside's choices were to attack or be canned
Burnside knew he wasn't the best general but felt he was better than Hooker, who Lincoln would pick next

I have been a supporter of ABT, and previously, CWT, for many years. I am ex-infantry combat, Vietnam and CQC instructor Iraq War. I have toured with the late great Ed Bearrs, Jeff Wertz and many others. While you have always done an excellent job in all respects, I have in the last year or so detected a slight Union bias in your films. I have tried to convince myself that I was wrong without success. The Union armies plundered, pillaged and laid waste to the citizens of the South and their families and property throughout the war and after and yet it sounds like you are making excuses for this behavior. I also had to laugh at the statement that the Union won the battle of Antietam. Most people who espouse this view justify it because the Union Army supposedly "held the field" at the end of the battle. McClellan held his side of the creek but Lee held the other side where the actual battle was. Lee waited a whole day after the battle on the actual battlefield waiting for another Union attack, since he was outnumbered almost 2:1, while McClellan and his friend Fitz John Porter, whose Corps the Young Napoleon would not commit to battle, languished safely on the side of Antietam Creek where the battle was not fought. Trust me, I know the difference between winning and losing a battle, and there are many ways to do both, but Antietam was not a Union Victory.

But I had to get out of there just changed for the bad to fast 2017 I pulled the plug and headed for north GA. Mountians never looked back love it here in the country don't miss a siren every 15 minutes
